Eh. That about sums up my experience with the new South Terminal at ABIA. From my very first experience to my multiple trips out there, I'm totally underwhelmed by the South Terminal. I'll start with my very first experience so you know how frustrating this place is! My mom was flying into town one night. She is almost 70 and still getting used to flying by herself to come visit us here in Austin. My family almost always flies Allegiant due to it being one of the few airlines with direct, nonstop flights between Las Vegas and Austin. So I go to pick up my mom at 10:30pm one night. I wait in the ABIA baggage pick up as usual. I can't find my mom at all. She calls me on the phone and says she has no idea where's she at at the airport looks weird. I start freaking out because I'm wondering if she somehow got on the wrong plane and is in a different state now. I asked 4 different airport employees if there was a different place where people might be deboarding due to all of the construction going on. All 4 people told me that this is the ONLY passenger pickup area for the whole ABIA airport complex. I keep calling my mom trying to figure out where she's at. She finally found a security officer who told her that she's at the brand new South Terminal. It had just opened THAT day. No one knew about the new Terminal. He helped her find the shuttle that would take her to the Barbara Jordan Terminal. She called to tell me the news. I told her I would try to find out where she's at so I can go pick her up. I then found another airport employee and specifically asked about the South Terminal. Again I was told there is no other terminal. I told my mom to take the shuttle and just call when she got there and I would find her then. After over 2 hours, I finally found my mom. This was unbelievably frustrating. My second trip out to the South Terminal, was annoying as well. I pulled the address off of their website to make sure I had the right one and wouldn't get lost. I put it in the GPS and head on my way. I'm headed down 183 and see absolutely NO signs for the South Terminal, only the big signs for the Barbara Jordan Terminal. My GPS also is directing me towards the main terminal. Needless to say, I was lost again. My Google Map app and Apple Maps couldn't find the place. I had to pull up the website and hand write directions on how to get there. It turns out there is one tiny green freeway sign above the freeway signs for when 183 & 71 split apart. My gps finally realized where I was going when I got closer to Burleson Road/183. Again there are no signs for the airport there either. You end up driving down random empty streets until you get to Emma Browning which is where you turn to get to the South Terminal. It's a fricking airport people, PUT UP SOME SIGNS FOR PEOPLE!!! My third trip out there was when I was flying to Las Vegas. I got to experience the whole airport experience then. I do have to say that security is easier because there are just a lot less people, so that was nice. There's just one waiting room area for people to sit and wait. There's no food places besides a small snack bar and a food truck outside, so make sure you eat before you get there. Now for boarding the planes. Even though they supposedly spent $20 million dollars on this place, they decided to have the planes board outside the old fashioned way. They have the roll up stairs that go up to the plane. You board and disembark outside on the tarmac. This is fine except when it's raining or ridiculously hot and then everyone gets on the plane sweaty and stinky. FANTASTIC! I have since been out to the South Terminal about a dozen times, either picking people up or dropping them off, as well as flying in and out myself. I know all the ins and outs. I just feel bad for the people who end up there and don't know how to get anywhere. I also know plenty of people who live in Austin and still don't know that there's a new South Terminal even now. It just seems the whole thing was badly planned, from what they built, the press releases so people actually know it's there, the severe lack of signage to find the place, and just the added hassle of their poor planning in general. Maybe I'm just grumpy, but I am so NOT impressed with this place. read more

Allow an extra 20 minutes to drive to this out-of-the way South Terminal on the backside of ABIA. Uncrowded terminal. Cruising through TSA security is a breeze - just no TSA precheck for VIAAIR yet. Concessions-with fruit, sandwiches, chips and sweets available for purchase before boarding. read more

As far as airports go, I really like this one. Plenty of options/cities to choose from. The airport is pretty clean too. I will say the bathrooms need a serious update though. I can't wait to see all the updates they make! read more

This was my first time to Austin and I flew in on Allegiant Air. The South Terminal is definitely removed from the main airport building but it seemed very new. The building and decor were all new and modern. There were plugs everywhere and the seats were very comfortable. The bathrooms were clean and fresh. There was even an outdoor portion that looked like in warm weather, they have food trucks out there for the guest. I thought that was a cool concept and I have never seen that at any other airport and I travel a lot. The TSA portion was cumbersome. There is no TSA pre-check and you had to take out all of your snacks and have them go seperate through the x-ray machine, just like your laptop. The TSA agents said this will be rolling out to all the airports in 2018 so just be prepared for that. I would fly into this airport again for sure. read more

At first, you may be turned off by the fact the Austin Allegiant terminal has split from the main airport and requires a 15 minute shuttle ride to get there. Plan extra time for this. But then when you arrive you will discover a quick friendly security experience, a modern waiting area, an amazing outdoor patio with comfortable furniture, free wifi, visiting food trucks, misting fans, free beer, and if you're lucky, a free Texas two step lesson! And good news, rumor has it Allegiant is adding more flight days to the schedule very soon! read more

Pro- cheap flight Con- literally everything else. Getting to south terminal is difficult and confusing. It is not apart of the regular airport so don't even bother going that way because it's wrong. After much confusion trying to find the south terminal (your phone gps doesn't take you to south terminal, will continually put you back toward the main airport even with the exact address for south terminal-- guess phone gps hasn't updated). The flights are limited so if you miss your flight you are stuck in austin. My experience. Left at 3 for a 436 pm flight. Takes 20 min to get to airport from my location. Didn't get to airport security until 422. Gates closed at 421 and I was not allowed on. After speaking with the lady at the allegiant desk, she said "we ask passengers to get here 45 min before their flight, what happened?" I said "I couldn't find this place." She said, "yeah I understand your concern." I clarified asking, "so others have missed their flight because they couldn't find the location?" She answered yes. If you don't know where this location is then leave in PLENTY of time, regardless of how close you are because if you can't find the place then you will end up having to buy another ticket with another airline. This is the LAST time I will choose a cheaper flight over a better, more established airline. read more

Since it's my last time to fly Frontier/Spirit/Allegiant, I am giving this little terminal "5stars". Everything happens here is beyond discrimination lol. To get here, people need to take 20+mins shuttle from main terminal. Sometime you will get lucky to have non-AC shuttle which means free SAUNA before your flight. 20mins shuttle feels like going to Middle East. You will pass by dumping area, unpaved road, rural countryside. The terminal itself is actually functional enough. They even have a food truck!! Typical Austin vibes. The terminal is like a loft-type building which looks like temporary factory. Interior has just enough seats for people. Flying cheap airline means you deserve what you can afford. These airline always have low priority, worst gates. It's 100+ degree outside. Yes, we just enjoyed our free sauna. No one freaks out cause we don't want to pay tripled for our ticket. read more

Travel a real airline that leaves from the real airport if you want the boring, uneventful travel experience. The members of the staff were not pleasant. This was a disappointment. I understand what it's like to be tired and overworked but crack a smile, be nice to guests, and help them out. You're in a "people" business. Do better or fake it. There are a few food shelves to pick from, like a little mini Mart... No restaurants, cafes, shops, etc. Which is fine if you know what you're getting into. They also have a "hot breakfast" option. The staff member after security was great! read more

Absolutely unwelcoming. Don't expect to get any help or answers in this terminal. If you need a human for either frontier or allegiant airlines...dont hold your breath. You will be waiting for a while. The kiosk is worthless and directs you to the desk agent. They will not help you until a specific time. Would do negative stars if I could, but want to give credit to the shuttle driver at the main airport that told me I was at the wrong airport and needed to either take a shuttle or move my truck. I chose to move my truck, but they still charged me $3 for leaving long term parking within 15 minutes, stating I was at the wrong terminal. No part of this is easy, smart, convenient from moving locations to parking to entering the correct entrance for departures to seating within the terminal. We show up at the new South Terminal parking and the signs say 10$ a day. That seems excessive especially when the parking at the main airport is 7$ a day (last I flew). The stops for the shuttle are not covered which is fun in the middle of summer in Austin. I would recommend walking instead if you can but I was toting twin 8 month olds so I thought getting out of the sun was a better idea. It didn't take too long for a shuttle to show up but the guy was acting like he had to get to the next stop in under 10 secs. I couldn't fit the stroller in the rack properly without shifting other peoples luggage but the second I stuck the thing down the shuttle started driving so now their is a stroller blocking the walk way and I feel like a jerk. This guy guns it around to the terminal to drop us off but he did hand me the stroller back at least. Getting through security was crazy. The AC wasn't working so it was humid and 85 degrees. The line was so backed up they only allowed people on particular flights through. Once you get past the one X-ray machine you're in a small terminal which is packed to the gills with people. Credit to the TSA agents who where very friendly and helpful even though it was hot and people were grumpy. The terminal doesn't have real gates just permanent ramps out on the tarmac. This wouldn't be a big deal except it's generally in the high 90s outside so it's a brutal walk. Returning you will have to wait out on the tarmac for a gate to open up. If you have a gate checked stroller and car seats you'll have to wait in the sun for those to show up. When I asked if I had to wait in the sun I was told they would be brought inside. I thought this meant before my other baggage but no so my husband I were stuck holding our twins for another 30 min because I didn't want to stand in the sun with infants. Did I not mention they only have one baggage claim conveyer belt? Three flights worth of people are milling around an area around the size of two double-wides. Overall it just feels like insult to injury. I've already suffered through a budget airline flight, I don't want a budget airport as well. I thought taking a direct flight would be worth it but I was so so wrong. read more

Flew Frontier into the South Terminal 6/11 from Denver. Plane arrived 20 minutes early (9:20 instead of 9:40). Flight was full. Waiting waiting waiting for luggage ... no one to ask. No one around except increasingly more irritated passengers. Many with little kids and gate checked strollers. No where to put their kids! Late night. Everyone tired. Finally a guy who presumably worked for the South Terminal came in and told everyone the baggage people were working hard to get our bags. Yeah right. At 10:55 - an hour and a half after we deplaned, the carousel finally started. I have NEVER seen such inefficiency at an airport ... and I've flown into quite a few "questionable" locations. Dear god please don't make me go through here again. Confusing signage to get here. Outdoor pick up area for bus to main terminal is OUTSIDE in the heat. There is no TSA precheck line. Only one security line that backs up and you wait an hour. Not enough seating. When I got into the terminal, it was so crowded, it was difficult to even find a spot on the floor to sit, never mind an actual seat. The AC was not on. I had to drop the rental car at the main terminal and take the shuttle to south terminal to fly Frontier airlines. First of all, the south terminal is super far from the main terminal and just has frontier and allegiant flying from there. If it is situated so far almost 20 minutes, it is the airport's responsibility to have a good timely shuttle that takes the passengers there. We waited for 35 minutes but there was no sign of the shuttle while 10 to 15 empty employee lot shuttles and parking shuttles went to and fro. When we called the helpline we were told to wait 10 more minutes. This airport is ridiculously stupid. Worst airport I have ever been to. Complete mismanagement with the shuttle and very few people conducting security do there were li es for bag checking as well. read more

If I had parked at the South Terminal, maybe, maybe this would be ok. But alas we did not. Had to stand out in the cold for 45 minutes with my family to get crammed into a bus. The bus fit about 15 people in, and one bus only dropped people off and refused to pick people up. I get Austin needs to expand, but if you build a terminal this far away, get a proper size shuttle or get more than a couple to transport passengers. Decent, but the south terminal is so secluded from the main terminal. It's almost like it's a separate airport. Good luck to those travelers who have to switch terminals. Terrible! There is no signs inside the regular gates that tell you that south terminal is a different building. I was 2 hours early and almost missed my flight. I asked 4 employees and they gave me wrong directions. I got frustrated and asked the guy working the information center and he was super rude about it, like if it's my fault I didn't know where I was going. So you have to take a shuttle or cab/Uber to this place and it's about 15 min away. The cab ride there is $20! The shuttle did not come fast enough and only passes by if you request it or certain time. One food truck that seems to always be closed because they "run out of food" - when they open, most of the menu is marked as sold out. The counter service for Frontier is Ok, but food/drink offerings are terrible. There is free WiFi, but no AT&T cell service - do not plan to make any calls. read more

The new South Terminal is great. It has its own parking lot and you don't have to park at the main terminal. There is a shuttle service from the main terminal in case you go to the wrong terminal. It's small with one checkpoint and one baggage claim area. There's a patio with a food truck once you get through security. It's a lot less stressful. As of now only one airlines is flying in and out (Allegiant). read more

The South Terminal at ABIA is an exceptional experience for the jaded airport traveler of today. We are used to long lines, crowding, dirty bathrooms, bland food choices, and unfriendly service. None of that exists here at the amazing South Terminal. With hip mid-century modern decor, local ATX flair, fun and lively music, and rotating food trucks, this quaint terminal is an oasis! The patio is a must visit for the very best in Austin food trucks, good company, cold beer, and watching planes come and go. Parking is easy and on site, just be sure to realize this is not at the Barbara Jordan/Main Terminal, but off Burleson Road on the South side of the airport (as their name suggests). read more

What a horrible experience we had here! The security line was so long and slow, despite the fact the two flights were boarding. The person checking IDs was so slow, only one person! And then the person flagging bags for further inspection flagged nearly every bag. About 15 of us feom 2 different flights were waiting for ONE TSA agent who swabbed every item in our bags slowly, without looking at or talking to any of us as the gate agent came out and said both of our Allegiant flights were going to close without us!!! Arrived around 3-4pm on 11.12.19. It's a tiny terminal. One of the smallest I've ever been in with barely anything around. As one of the passengers described it, it's like in another city! You have to go on the highway to get to the main terminal! It didn't help that there was a TSA precheck sign that I followed. Got to the front and there was a sign that said it was for wheel chair and airline staff. That made it more confusing. Nothing about precheck after following the first sign. The one and only TSA employee checking tickets and ID saw me but did not acknowledge that I was standing there for like 10 minutes. Other staff saw and just ignored that I was waiting to get checked. So I went all the way around to the regular line and waited. Then some airline employees went through the same line that I had been waiting in after me and were let in immediately. When it got to my turn in the regular line, they handed me a pink piece of laminated paper to hold to go through the REGULAR line. So basically there is no tsa precheck here, at least not for me.
