We recently visited Maine from California. A large factor in driving our choice of holiday was hearing so much about the Portland beer scene. While visiting several other breweries, we kept hearing about Austin Street, so we added it to our itinerary, and I'm so so glad we did. This location is small, and a little hidden as it's on the backside of the industrial area housing a few other breweries. Upon walking in, we were quickly and warmly greeted by Brie. She gave us recommendations based on styles we like, and what they had on draft vs in cans and we really enjoyed the selections. We found the beer to all be good representations of the styles we tried. The space is cute, with white board walls you can add your art or fun message on. The biggest thing for us was Brie herself. She was super attentive and friendly, and didn't mind us bugging her with our beer nerdery. All in all, one of our favorite spots on our trip, and we're already planning a return trip to Maine with Austin Street at the top of our itinerary. read more

I appreciate all breweries, particularly for the amount of craftsmanship and grueling work it takes to start a brewery and keep it alive. These small businesses have drawn in a new crowd to the Portland scene, and it's a scene that is consistently growing and evolving. This makes it challenging for breweries to stick out among the competition, and I although I appreciate Austin Street, I find that it doesn't quite stick out for me. Outside of going to the brewery, I had tried a variety of Austin Street's brews at restaurants and other venues. Out of their brews, it always seems like their Patina Pale Ale is widely recognized locally, and it's a beer that I will get if there is nothing else that tickles my fancy. Is it phenomenal? No. But it's solid. On a recent day drinking excursion, a group of friends and I decided to brewery hop. Never having been to the Austin Street brewery, I was looking forward to trying it out. However, I just felt let down, as I think my expectations far exceeded the reality. First off, the venue is extremely small. During the summer months when people can sit outside, I'm sure it opens up the venue a bit, but on a cold winter's day with a crowd of people, it just seemed a bit...tight and uncomfortable, especially compared to other breweries right around the corner that they are competing with. And again, I truly want to love their beer...but there just isn't anything that I have fallen in love with. I tried their Florens IPA, which was okay, but nothing special to set itself apart from other New England-style IPAs. I also tried their Gradation Raspberry ale and their Cosmo Strong Ale, all of which I just found forgettable. Of the four breweries that are located all within the same block, this one seems to be the newest and smallest in operation but that does not hinder their ability to make some amazing craft brews. Here are a few things that are great about this place, there are two picnic tables to taste the wares of the brewery. You can get pours of 5oz and 10oz or a growler to top everything off. This day that had three selections of a Saison, stout and a delicious and refreshing crushable IPA. This is the one that I tried and it was extremely floral but refreshing and clean nontheless. The brew master was very friendly and the other thing that rocks about this place is that after Bissell, Foundation and Allagash all close, this little hidden gem is wide open for a couple more hours to serve those looking to partake a little later in some craft spirits after a long day at work. I visited Austin Street Brewery because it's in an area which a bunch of other breweries. They had very few options on tap that weren't IPAs, and frankly that's the only beer style I don't like... I tried a couple different beer offerings with my boyfriend and neither of us were super impressed. However, the outside seating area was quite nice and they had giant Jenga which was fun to play. read more

A very small tasting room, no boards for the tasting glasses. The woman pouring didn't give them to us in the same order on as they were listed on the chalkboard nor we weren't given a list of the order they were poured in. We tried Patina Pale, Neverender, Six Grain, and Snowblower. The Six Grain - a barleywine - was interesting and Snowblower - a milk stout - was tasty and rich in texture. A tour/bachelor party of ya-dudes came in as soon as we sat down and, as it's a tiny tasting room, things weren't super comfortable. Not sure I need to stop in again as nothing seemed to be all that unique or tasty. They should really consider getting some boards for the tasting pours. read more

5 dollar full pour Friday nights! Austin is great brewery working its way into the Portland beer scene. Friday nights are one of the best times to hit this place up to get a full pour of their beers saving some money and getting a great brew at the same time. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable and love to chat. The brewery is not huge but they have a bar area with 4 or 5 stools and some outside seating until the snow flies. The door is open to the brewery side as well so you can peek your head inside and see "where the magic happens". Grab a growler of Kon-Tiki and glass. (Just a crazy idea but what if Austin, Foundation, Bissell Brothers, and Allagash had some sort of block (beer) party night? I think it would be huge!) read more

A nice little brewery across the street from Allagash. After going on the brew tour at Allagash, we walked across the street to Austin Street Brewery. They offered a nice variety of beers and for a great price. Their 5 oz samples were $2; their 10 oz pours were $4. They also offered 32 oz bottles to-go. Austin Street Brewery had both indoor and outdoor seating with umbrellas. There was a local food cart parked outside in case you wanted a bite to eat. They had merchandise for sale too. So if you're in the mood for more tastings after visiting Allagash or just wanna give another local brewery a try, come to Austin Street. read more

Came here since the other breweries told me about it. Of course I'll go and see what they're all about. It's a small Walked in and immediately I was greeted. Felt warm and friendly. I sit down on their bar stools right in front of the taps. They only had two beers available that day, which I tried them both. The people who were there chatting with me was the owner and the brew master. They told me about the flavors and the process of each beer. It was great to talk to them about their reason to create those specific flavors. They had 2 beers on tap to taste and for growlers. No bottles yet, something to keep calling for. They had plenty of beer glasses and clothes to purchase. Glasses were great though. The taster glasses are my favorite that I had to purchase a few of them. Was here about a year and half ago and didn't find anything that I loved. Liked all of their offerings, but nothing was a standout for me. Until, that is, our last visit there days ago. Florens: how delicious! Hoppy, but not bitter, and so much flavor for such a relatively low ABV. I'll confess that we bought our can limit and are excited to share it with all our IPA-loving friends. And we were similarly happy with all of the beers we tried there this go-around. read more

More of a nanobrewery. Third stop on my Portland beer tour. This was the smallest and newest player of the 3 breweries on this visit. Tried 2 of the 3 beers on tap. Both beers were light and refreshing. It was great to here their story on how they started. Most of what they make is sold locally. They do not have a wide variety of beers and are just getting into barrel aging. Tasting room is small, brewery is small, but a nice outdoor space. read more

This is a very nice little place to try a few types of beer. The prices are just right anywhere between $2 for a 5 ounce pour, $4 for a 10 ounce pour and $7-8 for a 32 ounce pour. I tried the succinct which was a dark Herman lager and I enjoyed. The Bf had the patina and thought it was just "generic," and won't recommend. It's a small space but in nice weather there is an outside patio where visitors can sit and have beer. A plus is that there was a food truck the day we were there. As you have beer you can eat food. He girls taking the order were super friendly. I would come here again with friends if I lived in Portland. read more

To be honest their beer isn't my favorite. This doesn't take away from what they are trying to do. The brewery is small but they have outdoor seating which allow a decent number of guest. The hidden gem of industrial way. When the breweries along the road are packed, Austin street (around the backside of the building) will have ample parking and no lines- score! Amazing, refined beers available for good prices to drink inside or outside at a shaded picnic table, or grab some cans to go. I always suggest spending time at the breweries and skipping the beer bars, for a more authentic and cheaper experience. Plus, the beer will be the freshest possible. read more

It's a small shop located in the same industrial park as Allagash. The DIPA is outstanding. Definitely doesn't seem like 9.1%. My husband really likes the stout (I don't care for that style). Definitely worth hitting up if you're in the Industrial Way area and into craft beer. read more

First, I have to say, out of all the Maine local breweries, the Austin Street logo is my favorite. Now this has nothing to do with their product, but if I was to buy a shirt and wear it around town, this brand would get my dough. I also love the location. It's in the mix, yet not in the mix. Austin street is located on the backside of the building aligned with two other breweries (foundation and bissell bros.). This spot is the least pretentious, which I appreciate. When the lines out front become unbearable, scoot around to the back and check this spot out. They have a little, quiet, set-up in the summer. Now, onto the beer. I really want to give this place 4 stars, but I just can't. I like their beer, I want to love their beer, but I just don't. Most of the time when I'm there, they often only have two choices to sample, while the other kegs have been kicked. I want this place to shine, maybe they will one day. I will continue to taste what they make and hope that one makes a memory for me. read more

This is becoming my favorite brewery in Portland! Come take advantage of their tasting room. It's tiny and extra cozy in the winter but during the warmer months, you can sit outside. I love that I can try different beers for $2 and get a growler for $8 or so. It's inexpensive and the beers are super tasty. If you get a growler, you'll get a discount if you come back and reuse that growler again. The staff are awesome. They are friendly and are willing to answer question you have about their beer. It feels like a really personal experience to come in and try beer there. I highly recommend checking it out. read more

This is my favorite brewery in Portland. It's legit. Tons of great beer, and the staff here is amazing. Super friendly and they answered all the questions I had about the brewing process. I used to come here every Friday to refill my growler when I was within walking distance of here. They usually have 2 different drafts (randomly selected) available for purchase each Friday. On a recent trip to Portland, I visited a handful of breweries and sampled many beers. My favorite was the Anniversary DIPA from Austin Street. I would highly recommend it if you like strong IPAs with a slight citrus flavor. Although Austin Street is smaller than the other breweries in the area, it's worth visiting for the delicious beer, friendly people, and relaxing atmosphere. It has an outdoor seating area that is reminiscent of a small beer garden, complete with a giant Jenga set. read more

Stopped by on my way out of town and ordered their two flagship beers, the florens and patina, and they were both terrible. Had a real bad chemical taste to it, my dad compared it to drinking battery acid. Couldn't even finish them and just left a quarter way through the fist round. read more

Waited 10 minutes to get 3 short pours - a session IPA, a saison, and a pale ale. All were average at best. No real atmosphere here, just boxy yellow rooms with picnic tables. It's right across the street from Allagash, and Bissell Brothers is next door. Make Austin Street your lowest priority. read more

Austin Street is my favorite brewery in Portland. Their beer is just what I'm looking for! The staff is amazing. This review is a little past due, I went in on December 22nd, I took and Uber to the brewery. As I was leaving the Uber, I slammed the car door on my thumb. Basically broke the nail, and bleeding a lot. I walked into the brewery and I see one of the staff members, I believe her name was Nikole was cleaning up the tap room a little, I asked if she had a first aid kit, she stopped what she was doing, helped bandage me up and made sure my thumb was comfortable. I already liked this brewery before because the beer is great, but now I'm forever a fan thanks to the great service. I would like to add that my thumb is completely healed now. Next time I visit Portland, I'm sure to stop by. read more

Wow what an awesome local brewery. They offer each person over 21 every flight of beer tasting. Today's tasting included house beer, dubbel, fluxus 2016, interlude. This micro (nano) brewery is awesome and the Patina Pale Ale is super delicious. We ended up getting two growlers of that, which if you bring your growler back, it's cheaper to just fill your growler back up. They even give you your full money's worth by pushing out all the CO2. They really care to make sure that your beer will last and taste good when you have it. They had just brewed that morning, so it smelled really captivating. Their 5oz samplers are just $2 each and on Fridays, they even have full pours for $5. The only thing is that it is pretty small, with only two seats, which was fine for us when we arrived with 3 people. Service was great but he didn't elaborate as much as I would have liked, but perhaps I should've asked more. Great experience overall. read more
