    Blueberry rim
    Danielle V.

A large space is hard to find in Portland so this is a great spot for big groups. Lots of space, tables, bar space, even a back room you could do events at. The beer is always great. I got the blueberry one with a blueberry sugar rim which was so good and neat! You can't get that anywhere else. I love to come here and will keep coming back!

On a recent cruise we had a port stop in Portland and when I found that out I told the wife "The only mandatory visit I want on this port stop is Shipyard". I've been a fan of Shipyard's beers for years, so it was an easy call. So comes the day when we were in port. We got off the ship and headed directly to Shipyard Brewing. It's literally a half-mile from the cruise terminal. We arrived about 5 minutes after opening time (11am), so the place was pretty quiet with only one table occupied when we walked in. The tasting room is sizable, with a large bar and the beer choices on placards behind the bar (20 in all). To be honest, I was mostly there for the Pumpkinhead (my favorite of all their brews), and it was just out luck that we were there during Pumpkinhead season. Our bartender was Ryan. The other bartender was also Ryan. How cool/awesome/funny is that? I had a flight of 4 (which Congo helped me pick out) and an Everything Pretzel with Beer Cheese. ..full stop... Everything Pretzel with Beer Cheese. I kid you not, this was the single-best pretzel I've ever eaten. It was hot and covered with Everything Bagel seasoning, and a side of beer cheese. Seriously. If you ever find yourself in Portland you have a moral obligation to get one of these. It'll change your life. The Pumpkinhead and the Smashed Pumpkin (Imperial Pumpkin Ale) were the highlights of my flight. The other two were good, but Pumpkinhead is always top notch in my book. After our beer/snack we made the obligatory visit to the gift shop. So. Many. Choices. Shirts. Hats. Candles. Stickers...and the list goes on. I could have spent two hours in the gift shop because I wanted literally one of everything...but I had to get back on a cruise ship so I had to control myself. I limited myself to a t-shirt and a Pumpkinhead beer glass. I wanted more. I wanted SO much more. It was 100% awesome to visit Shipyard. I wish I lived closer.

I have been wanting to come here for a while now. Glad my friend who does not drink agreed to come with me. I was sooo happy to be here. I enjoy shipyard beers in other states and to be at the actual brewery was awesome. It is a big space with plenty of seating and there is seating at the bar as well. The store is connected to the tasting room and they have alot of different merch here. I ended up getting a flight as there were some beers/ NA ciders I wanted to try and I could not decide which ones I wanted. The beertender was super nice and greeted us with a smile on his face.'You don't get that very often! As I enjoyed sipping my different beers my friend and I played a game that they had sitting around. I only liked 2 of the 4 I got. Oh well. This brewery is super chill though, I am sure it gets busy on weekends like most breweries probably do. If you are in the area this is a must check out one.

Lucked into happy hour when I stopped by and that's always a good start! Lots of beers on tap and a wide variety as well which you don't always find at a craft brewery. I went with a flight and thoroughly enjoyed a few of my choices. Bartender I chatted with was super friendly and willing to make suggestions. The main bar area is a bit of an odd shape and the beams make it a little hard to navigate or see everything depending on where you're sitting. There's also a separate room for dining or private parties but I didn't venture back there. It was nice that the merchandise had it's own room as well so you didn't necessarily have to enter the bar to buy non-beer things. While I didn't try any of it the food I saw on other tables looked delicious! If I'm back in Portland I will definitely be coming back to Shipyard Brewing!

Shipyard Brewing Company is a craft brewery that opened in Portland, Maine in 1994. It was founded by Fred Forsley and brewmaster Alan Pugsley. Forsley, a real estate entrepreneur, was inspired to open a brewery in Maine after visiting a brewpub in Florida. In 1992, he opened the Kennebunkport Brewing Company and the Federal Jack's Brewpub above it in Kennebunk. Forsley hired Pugsley, an English biochemist and brewer, as a consultant on the equipment and the beers. When the popularity of the brewpub proved too much for the capacity, Forsley and Puglsey took over the former Loughlin foundry building in Portland. This new venture was officially dubbed "Shipyard Brewing". Initially brewing some of the recipes from Federal Jack's, the brewery soon began to craft their own lineup of beers. In 1996, Shipyard brewed their seasonal "Pumpkinhead Ale" for the first time. It quickly became their most popular offering and today it accounts for around 40 percent of the brewery's production, despite being available for only three months each year. As of 2025, Shipyard is the largest brewer in Maine and the fourth-largest microbrewery in New England. Shipyard also owns the Sea Dog Brewing Company beer brand and brewpub chain as well as Capt'n Eli's Soda brand. I visited Shipyard Brewing for the first time this past summer while I was vacationing in Maine. After cycling the Eastern Trail that morning, I cycled around Portland to visit some breweries. I arrived at Shipyard in the late afternoon. I wouldn't exactly call Shipyard one of my Top 25 favorite breweries, but they hold great sentimental value for me. Pumpkinhead Ale was one of the first beers I ever tried after I turned 21. It's not my favorite pumpkin beer, but I still look forward to it every autumn. The Portland facility is a nice big building with two taprooms, a full kitchen, a full merchandise shop, and even some pinball machines in the back. I pulled up a seat in the front taproom and ordered a sampler flight that included Sea Dog's "Sunfish" and "Blood Orange Belgian" (both Fruited Wheat Beers), and Shipyard's "Discovery IPA" and "Finder" (New England IPA). They were all ok, but I was massively disappointed that I couldn't enjoy a fresh Pumpkinhead Ale because it wasn't in season yet. They didn't even have any Pumpkinhead swag in the gift shop. Oh well; it's still a great place though. I'm happy that I finally made the trek to a nostalgic brewery whose offerings I've been enjoying for 20 years.

This was one of the few breweries we visited during our cruise last week. I guess I forgot to check in, lol. Anyway, the place is huge! They have great selection of beers and merchandise as well. The blueberry ale was delicious!

A large brewery in Old Port, with multiple areas to sit and eat. It is a family owned brewery located near the port. Our group ordered flights- and tried their blue fin stout, blue paw blueberry and summer wheat. The group liked the blue paw blueberry the most. Definitely worth stopping in .

I've been here several times already, and it never fails to disappoint! I'd never tried Shipyard before moving to Maine, and now, it's probably one of my favorite breweries. You really can't go wrong with any of the beers. The interior of this brewery is massive, with a ton of tabletop seating. They also have a large food menu, though I admit I've only gotten drinks during my visits thus far. The service is also prompt and efficient, and there's a large gift shop at the entrance for hardcore fans who want to buy Shipyard swag (hoodies, glasses, 6-packs, etc.). The Pumpkin Head is a must-get during the fall - and don't forget to get the sugar rim. I was worried the rim would be too sweet, but it's some magical combination of sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, and other spices that just blends perfectly with the beer and elevates the flavor profile to a different level. I'm also a huge fan of the blueberry ale and the blueberry CBD seltzer (non-alcoholic) - both taste of fresh blueberries and don't have any of the artificiality that you sometimes get from berry-flavored drinks elsewhere.

    Chris A.

I mean, who wouldn't visit the OG pumpkin beer headquarters of Shipyard while Portland? The taproom is really large and has plenty of seats. I recommend trying a flight of beers so that you can save her all the goodness they offer. They have a nice selection of food to enjoy well having your beer . I recommend everything pretzel bites.it come with mustard or you can order cheese. I am really glad I got to try different different beers, but I must say Shipyard pumpkin beer will always be my favorite of all. And trust me, I've tried a lot!

    Catching flights not feelings

I was traveling solo from Coventry, Rhode Island and what would you know but the bartender used to live in Coventry Rhode Island! Small world! Got a flight and was super reasonable at $12 for 4 pours! Great conversation, great beer, cool tasting room, gift shop...not much more you can say!

    Danielle L.

A beer flight for $12! Sign me up! I got the following beer: 1. Pumpkin Head (#9) - Voted the #1 best beer in Maine. It tasted like a pumpkin spice latte but alcohol version. The 16oz pour comes with more foam and cinnamon sugar rim. The Pumpkin Head tasted like fall but it's more of a once in awhile type of beer. 2. Golden Ale (#4)- This tasted light with a clean finish. 3. Old Thumper (#12) - This tasted light and crisp. 4. Sea Dog Blue Paw (#16) - The blueberry beer was so delicious and had a strong taste of blueberry. When I think of Maine, I think of blueberry beer. Service was outstanding too! I didn't catch the bartender's name but he was patient explaining the types of beer and let me try samples. He even suggested which restaurant to try after. The conversation didn't feel like he was trying to get more tips but actually genuine.

Got the chance to stop by Shipyard Brewing while visiting Maine. Always enjoy their beer, so going in person was a treat. Big beer selection and got a flight so I could try a few different ones, all excellent. We split a yummy flatbread as a quick bite too. Bartenders were all friendly and gave advice on places to check out in the area. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Portland!

Menu on wall with tasty beer going down easy!

A fun place to hang and enjoy some really nice beers. Having a nitro pale ale and a Pumpkinhead wheat ale

Had no idea all three were located here, pleasant surprise. I enjoy Allagash white so we decided to stop in. The campus is a good size with gigantic tanks no doubt filled with liquid gold! Outdoor seating area with fire pits for warmer weather enjoyment. Entrance had a woodsy feel to it with signage that was clear to read. In the courtyard you choose which way to go; right heads into the outside beer garden and left brings you inside the brewery and gift shop. Beer garden for us. Seeing that it was covered by a tent thought for sure it was going to be cold inside , we were pleasantly surprised! Decor was paper chains and tissue paper hearts for Valentine's season. They had a creative station for folks to make their own Valentines. Also in the same area was a game bookshelf filled with board and card games to play. At the bar was a young man smiling as he welcomed us. We read the menu and for something different I chose "Cabin Weekend" the name reminded me of our camp in the Western mountains. We both enjoy whiskey so thought the aged barrels used for this brew would make a tasty treat. Grabbed our beers and then over to the food truck attached to the tent, clever. Bite into Maine is the food truck here today, unsure if different trucks come here or not. We wanted something small and shareable. Mac and cheese it was. We sat down at one of the many empty tables and began to enjoy our beers and food. Cabin weekend was so delicious! It was a strong onto 8.9%! Tasty with the faintest hint of whiskey and a cabin feel for the finish. The Mac and cheese was dense and rich!! The fork could practically stand upon its own! It was good in my opinion however don't think I could have finished the portion in my own. We enjoyed so much we will be back for some to bring away with us to our cabin in the woods.

Several more visits since my last review…read more Some things haven't changed: -- The beers are still great. Swish, Here's to Feeling Good All the Time, Nothing Gold, and Reciprocal are a formidable foursome. At any given time, you can usually get at least two, more often three, sometimes all four. -- You'd be hard pressed (pun intended) to find a better smashburger in Portland, but I'd also put it up against any regularly-offered burger I've had in Portland--smashed or otherwise. I love everything about it, from the high caliber of the beef to the fresh pillowy milk bun to the exhilaratingly strong cure of the bacon to the razor-thin cutting of the vegetables to the execution that gets even a smashburger burger juicy. -- I'm still not crazy about the wings. They have a frozen dinner feel to them. A few things, though, have changed: -- Full service now instead of having to order everything at the bar. That's a plus. -- The place is much more crowded-- including screaming tykes-- on the weekends. Not a plus, but can't fault a place for its own popularity. -- The fries are now the industrial strength coated kind. A big minus and a sad drop off from prior greatness, but better that than from an item off the main cast. -- You can now order beer cans to go from the table rather than having to get in line. A nice convenience. A few things to know: -- It's a surprisingly good option for vegetarians and pescatarians. The veggie burger and the grilled fish sandwich are both much more than solid. -- There's outdoor seating in front of the building and also to the right. -- The bar room to the right of the entrance is adults only, so if those screaming tykes get on your nerves, this is the place to be. -- You can still order beer at the bar if that's your preference over table service. Still a favorite, and the combo of beer, food, and space is tough to beat (Mast Landing and Maine Beer in Freeport are also somewhere in that echelon).

As an IPA fan I enjoyed this new version very much for its hop saturated citrusy forward taste that drank quite smooth for the 9.5%. At this point now Bissell is broken into two separate parts. The first will be the space welcoming to families and is more of their restaurant style area. Appeared to be a popular area and does offer reservations. My preferred area is the Bissell Garden as they call it. Those entering need to be of drinking age and have more lounge vibes where you order at the bar. It still offers full kitchen menu so is perfect. Particularly my favorite is snagging bar stools to grab some beers and food. I had to try out the Super Swish while my wife grabbed their red ale named Turnpike. Then food wise we split their kitchen special Classic Poutine. Some of the best classic kept simple poutine I have had. The perfect comfort food for yet another cold weather day in Maine. Have been impressed by all the food from Bissell. Truly the only negative still stands being the fact it's on Thompson's Point and required paid parking (not Bissell Brothers call but still). One of the most popular Maine breweries for a reason especially in the IPA game. Give all their other style of beers a try too though, top notch brewery!
