How did I not know that Shipyard was brewed in Maine and that they had a tasting room in Portland?! Well I'm glad I came across it this past trip up to Maine! [[HIGHLIGHT]]First of all the place is very cool! There are pinball machines and they even had a FIFA soccer area for the kids to play soccer in. They also had Jenga and cornhole. Anything that keeps my kids entertained while I enjoy a flight is a plus for me.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We visited Shipyard twice and each time I got a flight. I loved trying all their beer! From their original beer, to their summer ale, to their blueberry, watermelon, and beyond, everything was quite delicious. The bartenders were very very nice and offered tastings of anything I wanted to try. They also have food available and the pizza was very good. I really enjoyed visiting Shipyard and of course I had to bring some souvenir glasses home. I'll definitely visit again when I'm up in Maine. read more

On a recent cruise we had a port stop in Portland and when I found that out I told the wife "The only mandatory visit I want on this port stop is Shipyard". I've been a fan of Shipyard's beers for years, so it was an easy call. So comes the day when we were in port. We got off the ship and headed directly to Shipyard Brewing. It's literally a half-mile from the cruise terminal. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We arrived about 5 minutes after opening time (11am), so the place was pretty quiet with only one table occupied when we walked in.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The tasting room is sizable, with a large bar and the beer choices on placards behind the bar (20 in all).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] To be honest, I was mostly there for the Pumpkinhead (my favorite of all their brews), and it was just out luck that we were there during Pumpkinhead season. Our bartender was Ryan. The other bartender was also Ryan. How cool/awesome/funny is that? I had a flight of 4 (which Congo helped me pick out) and an Everything Pretzel with Beer Cheese. ..full stop... Everything Pretzel with Beer Cheese. I kid you not, this was the single-best pretzel I've ever eaten. It was hot and covered with Everything Bagel seasoning, and a side of beer cheese. Seriously. If you ever find yourself in Portland you have a moral obligation to get one of these. It'll change your life. The Pumpkinhead and the Smashed Pumpkin (Imperial Pumpkin Ale) were the highlights of my flight. The other two were good, but Pumpkinhead is always top notch in my book. After our beer/snack we made the obligatory visit to the gift shop. So. Many. Choices. Shirts. Hats. Candles. Stickers...and the list goes on. I could have spent two hours in the gift shop because I wanted literally one of everything...but I had to get back on a cruise ship so I had to control myself. I have been wanting to come here for a while now. Glad my friend who does not drink agreed to come with me. I was sooo happy to be here. I enjoy shipyard beers in other states and to be at the actual brewery was awesome. Lucked into happy hour when I stopped by and that's always a good start! Lots of beers on tap and a wide variety as well which you don't always find at a craft brewery. I went with a flight and thoroughly enjoyed a few of my choices. Bartender I chatted with was super friendly and willing to make suggestions. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The main bar area is a bit of an odd shape and the beams make it a little hard to navigate or see everything depending on where you're sitting.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]There's also a separate room for dining or private parties but I didn't venture back there.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It was nice that the merchandise had it's own room as well so you didn't necessarily have to enter the bar to buy non-beer things. Shipyard Brewing Company is a craft brewery that opened in Portland, Maine in 1994. It was founded by Fred Forsley and brewmaster Alan Pugsley. Forsley, a real estate entrepreneur, was inspired to open a brewery in Maine after visiting a brewpub in Florida. In 1992, he opened the Kennebunkport Brewing Company and the Federal Jack's Brewpub above it in Kennebunk. Forsley hired Pugsley, an English biochemist and brewer, as a consultant on the equipment and the beers. When the popularity of the brewpub proved too much for the capacity, Forsley and Puglsey took over the former Loughlin foundry building in Portland. This new venture was officially dubbed "Shipyard Brewing". Initially brewing some of the recipes from Federal Jack's, the brewery soon began to craft their own lineup of beers. In 1996, Shipyard brewed their seasonal "Pumpkinhead Ale" for the first time. It quickly became their most popular offering and today it accounts for around 40 percent of the brewery's production, despite being available for only three months each year. As of 2025, Shipyard is the largest brewer in Maine and the fourth-largest microbrewery in New England. Shipyard also owns the Sea Dog Brewing Company beer brand and brewpub chain as well as Capt'n Eli's Soda brand. I visited Shipyard Brewing for the first time this past summer while I was vacationing in Maine. After cycling the Eastern Trail that morning, I cycled around Portland to visit some breweries. I arrived at Shipyard in the late afternoon. I wouldn't exactly call Shipyard one of my Top 25 favorite breweries, but they hold great sentimental value for me. Pumpkinhead Ale was one of the first beers I ever tried after I turned 21. It's not my favorite pumpkin beer, but I still look forward to it every autumn. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The Portland facility is a nice big building with two taprooms, a full kitchen, a full merchandise shop, and even some pinball machines in the back.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I pulled up a seat in the front taproom and ordered a sampler flight that included Sea Dog's "Sunfish" and "Blood Orange Belgian" (both Fruited Wheat Beers), and Shipyard's "Discovery IPA" and "Finder" (New England IPA). They were all ok, but I was massively disappointed that I couldn't enjoy a fresh Pumpkinhead Ale because it wasn't in season yet. I've been here several times already, and it never fails to disappoint! I'd never tried Shipyard before moving to Maine, and now, it's probably one of my favorite breweries. You really can't go wrong with any of the beers. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior of this brewery is massive, with a ton of tabletop seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They also have a large food menu, though I admit I've only gotten drinks during my visits thus far. The service is also prompt and efficient, and there's a large gift shop at the entrance for hardcore fans who want to buy Shipyard swag (hoodies, glasses, 6-packs, etc.). The Pumpkin Head is a must-get during the fall - and don't forget to get the sugar rim. I was worried the rim would be too sweet, but it's some magical combination of sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, and other spices that just blends perfectly with the beer and elevates the flavor profile to a different level. I'm also a huge fan of the blueberry ale and the blueberry CBD seltzer (non-alcoholic) - both taste of fresh blueberries and don't have any of the artificiality that you sometimes get from berry-flavored drinks elsewhere. read more

Shipyard is one of the original craft brewers out of Portland. Being from Pennsylvania, I can remember their bottles coming down our way many moons ago. In recent years shrinking shelf space and tap limitations due to the explosion of the number of local and national craft brewers plus niche craft styles led to Shipyard being forgotten in my area. My family and I decided to just keep it light and stop in for Pizza and beers on a Saturday night while in town. It was a short walk from where we were staying with the only bummer being that they closed at 8pm! The inside is spacious with two bar areas. The larger back seating area had a few TV's showing MLB baseball and a kitchen area. The pizza smelled delicious so we decided to dig in, play some table games and enjoy a couple of pints. I had forgotten that Shipyard is the parent company of Sea Dog. Another throwback brand that used to be somewhat relevant in the Philly area craft scene. My wife really enjoyed the Sea Dog Blood Orange - 5.0% Crisp, refreshing Belgian style wheat with a subtle orange aroma and finishes with a hint of coriander and citrus while I had the Shipyard Discover IPA - 5.1% Light haze IPA with balanced hops. It was a session IPA that was fresh and went well with the pizza. The food menu was very simple with flatbreads and pizza being the main focus. We had the BUFFALO CHICKEN - Buffalo hot sauce layered with mozzarella, chicken, and red onion. Ranch dressing, bleu cheese crumble $20.00 and the CHEESE - Vine ripened tomato sauce layered with shredded mozzarella & provolone $15.00. The portions were more than enough to feed our family of four. We had leftovers. I thought the ingredients were fresh with a bready dough, cheese and a tangy sauce on the Cheese and the Buffalo Chicken had a decent kick with a good ratio of bleu cheese to chicken. Unfortunately our time was cut short because of their early closing time, but it was a good experience overall. A beer flight for $12! Sign me up! I got the following beer: 1. Pumpkin Head (#9) - Voted the #1 best beer in Maine. It tasted like a pumpkin spice latte but alcohol version. The 16oz pour comes with more foam and cinnamon sugar rim. The Pumpkin Head tasted like fall but it's more of a once in awhile type of beer. 2. Golden Ale (#4)- This tasted light with a clean finish. 3. Old Thumper (#12) - This tasted light and crisp. 4. Sea Dog Blue Paw (#16) - The blueberry beer was so delicious and had a strong taste of blueberry. When I think of Maine, I think of blueberry beer. Service was outstanding too! Shipyard Brewing Company has been on my " to try" list apparently and I got the opportunity to try one of their beers and it wasn't bad at all. I got their Pumpkin Head beer. As the name implies it's a pumpkin beer and these types of beers I scale very lightly on during Autumn because the "pumpkin spice" phase is everywhere during that time of year and you almost find it in anything so Steve and I make a strong effort to maybe get one dose of pumpkin for beer or a latte and call it good for the year as we hit burn out decades ago and Shipyard was the winning one for us this year. The Pumpkin Head pumpkin beer isn't bad. I will say I have had ones that I preferred a bit more but it's a fun beer to try out. It's a very light beer that is lightly sweet along with flavor highlights of pumpkin, cinnamon and other spices associated with the pumpkin spice phenomenon. We wanted beer and being that we were visiting the area I had no clue of anything. Well, I found this gem and whew I totally won!!! We walked in and we were like WE ARE HOME, lol. I mean I was literally cut off in mid-sentence and left standing there like a lost child. I didn't make a scene because I am a happy tipsy drinker, not a mean one. I let that mean customer finish. Well, the guy came back and took my order and he never apologized for what happened. he acted as if it was normal. This is where the customer service got a bit strange. This place could have kept the full 5-star rating but he didn't even acknowledge what happened and apologize for her and for walking away from me. I was literally a peasant I guest. Well, we got our pizza and it was EXCELLENT. I needed it for sure. This spot is 5 stars EASY, but the strange customer service experience knocked two stars off. My husband and I stopped by Shipyard Brewing Company on a Thursday afternoon, around 3 pm. When we came into the tap room, we were greeted by an employee and initially seated at a high top table but asked if we could be seated at the regular table. The employee was hesitant but said okay. However, this other employee, whom I assume was a manager or supervisor (?) told the employee no and said the table is reserved for a large party. The employee who had sat us said they won't be coming in until 4 pm and the manager/ supervisor said that we had to be gone by then (which was an hour later by the way). We said we would leave before that, but thought that woman was rather rude. Anyways, we ended up ordering: Beer flight $10- The flight comes with your choice of 4 tasters, in which my husband picked: Original (export), Apple crisp, Pumpkin head, Blue dream. I thought the pumpkin head was okay and I think that ended up being my husband's favorite and then the original (export). Barney's Mazing Meatball Pizza, $14 prior to tax- Arrived warm. This pizza was good but was average. Nothing really that special about it. ------------------------ (Total= $25.32 after tax, prior to tip) Service from the employee who was taking care of us was good. She checked up on us a few times and did bring us a glass of water when asked. We ended up leaving around 3:40 pm, which was before 4 pm, as we had said we would. Overall, our experience was just average and really could have been better. I don't see myself coming back. Please note that the ladies restroom was clean upon this visit and adequately stocked with the essentials. The restrooms are in the gift shop. Parking may be a challenge if construction is still going on, as some streets were blocked off. We were lucky to find street parking close by. read more

I think this is my seventh review of a Portland establishment and none of them have been a brewery...how is this possible?! Well I think starting off with a good ol' favorite like Shipyard Brewing Company is a nice place to begin. After a rousing morning/afternoon of biking around Peaks Island with my fiancée, Shipyard was just what the doctor ordered on our recent Portland trip. Now if you caught the "good ol' favorite" line, you might wonder how a guy that's never been to Portland knows about Shipyard...or, if you're a beer fan then you'll be like "um doy" as Shipyard can be found all over. This New Yorker has been partaking in Shipyard brews for years so it was exciting to finally visit the brick and mortar location. What wasn't too enticing was the construction going on all around the brewery. The exterior and parts of the interior were being worked on, which might not matter as long as beer is flowing, but when you're pretty darn hungry after that aforementioned bike trip and the kitchen is closed due to said construction, then it's an unfortunate factor. That aside, the tap room itself had a nice barrel-type feel with plenty of tables spread out. Once seated, we were given menus and a chance to peruse the beer choices. Like I had mentioned, I'm familiar with quite a few Shipyard beers so I was looking for something unique to the brewery that might only be concocted in small batches here in Portland. Luckily, Shipyard has just that with their Discovery Series beers. These are experimental and (for now) exclusive to the brewery. Let's just say my flight consisted of all of these Discovery Series selections. A little caveat to their beer menu would be that Shipyard falls short on alcoholic options beyond beer. I know, I get it, it's a brewery not a bar, but it's become decent practice to offer a few items that aren't brewed with hops. They did have one spiked seltzer, but that's still not leaving much choice. Only reason it's worth mentioning is my fiancée ended up with a cream soda of all things (which was quite tasty though, I must say!). That little snafu aside, my flight of experimental brews was pretty tasty. The raspberry milkshake IPA had great flavor and a little sourness while The Swallows IPA was a bit hazy (as described) and well-balanced. The Super Lemon Haze Wit was delicious and crisp with that lemony taste shining through. The most intriguing brew was Denny Mike's Farmhouse Ale which was brewed using the name brand BBQ seasoning...yup, you read that right. It was odd yet worked well being a farmhouse style ale and flavored nicely enough to enjoy it. Though that would be quite a beer to make to the shelves one day. Overall, Shipyard Brewing Company is a solid beer spot in the Portland area. It's reach goes beyond the state of Maine so many beer fans might know it, but visiting here allows you to experience some unique brews and a pretty casually fun feel. Yeah, the current construction wasn't the best and I'd love for a few other alcoholic options (just for the not so big on drinking beer community), but that can be pushed aside when the most important product is great. I'm a HO for breweries and have been to many far and wide, I had heard that Portland was one of the best cities for breweries and was looking forward to checking one out, especially this one. One of the good things about Shipyard is its location. It's SPANK in downtown Portland and, perfectly for me, just around the corner from my hotel. It's only open until 6pm during the week which is a little bit disappointing but it's open slightly later during the weekend to 8pm. We managed to sneak in at around 5pm. They have a very large dining area that rendered social distancing simple. There was probably at least 15 feet between us and the next party. The list of beers and seltzers to order is insane. They have some of their more typical brews in addition to some new stuff they're working on and our server genuinely was interested in our feedback which was kinda cool! We decided to order a flight, to share, knowing that it was close to closing time and also because as I'm getting older, I have more of a desire to actually remember my vacations, if you know what I'm getting at lol. We sampled some of a seltzer, an ale and two of their porters. They were all enjoyable but I would say 2/4 of them were DELICIOUS and something I would keep on steady rotation to have in the fridge at home. Didn't get to try any of their food but they have a legit food menu. Their gift shop is fun too, you can buy many of their brews in six (or more) packs and they have some apparel and other fun merch. We were able to snag a pumpkin head CANDLE which smells exactly like pumpkin head. Staff was also very friendly and made the entire experience very enjoyable. Would highly recommend. read more

Came here on a trip to Portland and really enjoyed their beers! My favorite has to be the watermelon wheat beer. It's also cool that they have plenty of options to make your own 6 pack to go so we got to go home with a few of our favorites without purchasing too many to have to fly home with. My husband liked the pumpkin beer that just came out yesterday (aug 2nd) - it wasn't on draft but he enjoyed it as a glass. Thanks for a fun visit! read more

Shipyard is a heavy hitter in the Portland beer scene and it's easy to see why. My husband and I got flights of beer in their tasting room and loved every single beer we tried. I'm not a porter person -- their hazelnut porter is the first one I've actively really liked! They have a wide assortment of options, including so many that are perfect for summer, including some grapefruity and blueberry ones. They were also so sweet to our toddler, and the tasting room has a variety of different games, crayons, etc! Definitely recommend that folks make a point to stop by. read more

Went here at Shipyard's a little close to closing time so i didnt get to try the food they offered except for some chips. Im not a big beer drinker but my husband does enjoy a good brew. I tried a few sips from all the flights we ordered and I was actually surprised to taste some of that pumpkin from one of the drinks. They offer a good variety with a great range of taste and "hoppiness" lol not sure how to describe beer with my noob tastebuds so excuse me for that. The inside store though was a treat for me! Where you can find to-go beers, mugs, magnets and good quality shirts! I actually brought one clothing merchandise for myself and i loved it! read more
