I had to bring my teenaged daughter after some complications from anesthesia (not performed by Dr Shaw). The staff put us at ease from our first contact. The surroundings were calming. Heather, Dr Shaw, and our nurse (can't believe I can't remember her name) made sure my daughter understood what was happening and what to do. She was able to sleep after that visit. TO DR. SHAW, TO YOUR INVESTORS, OTHER OWNERS, AND TO YOUR POTENTIAL PATIENTS. You all are using bad business practices. I UNDERSTAND THE SURGERIES GO WRONG. BUT IT WAS MORE THAN THAT. Training moment for you all, please read. Hopefully other people can avoid this scenario. Do not use this urologist, go anywhere but here. Nothing but problems. 1. Dr. Shaw gave me a vasectomy and several days later I had a giant lump on the right side. Went back several times over the next few months to see him and only saw his associates who gave me round of antibiotics, three rounds in a row before addressing any of the problems. I would request to see him on the phone they would say yes it's with him and it would just be another person who's never seen me before. The last visit I had was with a woman who actually shot me straight and said this is not normal and did not want to give me a fourth round of antibiotics. 2. After these multiple visits request requesting him but getting a nurse or associate I Literally had to stand in the office and demand to see him, they pulled me aside because I was being a squeaky wheel demanding to see the surgeon who bought my operation. Hence, I finally got to see Dr. Shaw directly after months and months of pain and suffering . 3. He told me that he no longer uses the technique that he used on me for this very reason, he could fix it, but it's a surgery and he has to put me under and my insurance would not cover it. He also agreed he would not bill me for that appointment. He looked in my eyes, shook my hand and told me he would not bill me. 4. Months and months later I get a bill for that visit from Dr. Shaw's office. Today I called and when I questioned it, they said they would take the co-pay off and I asked if I should call my insurance agency so they can take the entire visit off as discussed. The associate at Dr. Shaw's office hung up on me. They are trying to cover their tracks on a false bill in over billing situation She then handed me over to the practice manager. Large lump is still here and I've seen another urologist to see about taking care of it. I do not recommend using Dr. Shaw because of his inability to see a patient directly after a surgery when something went wrong. I had to stand my ground and demand to see him before he would. Then he made false promises and build me in my insurance anyway. If I personally would rate him as a surgeon, I would say one star because he botched mine, but I'm sure some things go wrong. The true one star situation here is a lack of ability to address the problem, when he did address the problem he made false promises, The manager said she would call me back in three days. I'll have another post on this in three days to see if this was taken care of. I'm also contacting my insurance agency to report an over billing statement. Dr. Shaw, hello from Travis hope you see this and I'm sure you remember me. Again, the one star is not because you botched my surgery. It's because of lack of the ability to own up to it, are you going through three rounds of antibiotics for something? That's not an infection, me having to stand in front of your office and demand to see you before I could see you again, and then making false promises to me afterwards. You looked me directly into my eyes and shook my hand and made me false promises. This is on you, Dr. Shaw. I'm sure you're a good surgeon and this is not the standards of your operation. Do not come here if you can avoid it FIND ANOTHER UROLOGIST this place is ridiculous, im.sure they just charged my insurance over 30,000 after my surgery I needed 2 and half pages of a short term disability form signed they wanted to charge me $50 after the doctor told me he would take care of everything and make sure it is all takin care of, to ask for 50$ to fill out simple standard paper work to return to work is not much but it is the principle and then had the nerve to tell me it would take awhile to get done I sincerely hope this place goes under now for this although this is RIDICULOUS I would have never came here knowing this read more

Since they never communicated with me about the appointment I had no chance to make the time they expected. They allegedly rescheduled me for July 30, but when I called today to confirm and get online documents processed they told me they cancelled the appointment (again without notifying me of changes). After several follow-ups on several phone calls, I've had the frustration of a bill that I should never have been charged for. First of all, my insurance should have covered it with no problem, but I found out----- on December 19th---- that Cigna was taken off the preferred provider carrier list. No one told me that instead of a $30 co-pay, I would be charged $249 for a one-minute phone call - the follow-up to tell me what my MRI results were. When I called to go over this bill the nurse or billing assistant started arguing with me that I had a long discussion and a consultation. In a word, NO. I came in for the consultation before the MRI and went over everything then. The phone call lasted one minute... I have my bill to prove this, which I'm attaching. The first 3-minute phone call was to try to connect and then we got disconnected. Once, when the nurse called me back she made sure I was on the line and then handed me over to Doctor Dessireddi who basically said my MRI was fine and nothing to worry about. Oh... I was to see him in a year from now. THE ENTIRE phone call took one minute. It is on the bill. Basically, I talked to the doctor for less than 30 seconds. That is what the phone call was for... not for some consultation. Again, It was a follow-up to the MRI and to just give me the results. The second part of my frustration is that I was never told that my Cigna Insurance would no longer be a preferred provider. I found Urology Austin through Cigna's insurance preferred provider portal!!! I came in for the first time in late November and was neither informed by them nor Cigna that a change before the end of the year was going to be made. I already knew I was going to have a different insurance provider on January 1st. I was trying to get everything done before the end of the year. So, when I called Cigna they told me it was the doctor's or Austin Urology's responsibility to inform me of the change. IN FACT, I told the doctor and the nurse when I was in for an appointment that I wanted to make sure everything would be covered by my insurance except for my COPAY. Doctor Dessireddi told me he could get me scheduled for my MRI and the results before then. I was reassured by the Doctor that it would be done. So, to my surprise and shock, I got a large bill for nothing but letting me know about the results. There was never a letter sent to me even though they told me they sent out letters. The very first correspondence I've ever received from you is this bill! Bottom line... STAY AWAY from Austin Urology or Urology Austin. They only care about how much they can get out of your insurance and then how much they can get out of you! read more

They may have great appointment availability, but the experience was far from good. I would recommend a urologist that is part of a larger health system. The wait may be much longer, but my experience at those types of doctors was much better. The practitioner I had here was perfectly professional, but I really would prefer to see a MD rather than a nurse practitioner. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! The doctors are good, but the front office staff at this practice is incompetent. And it will negatively affect your experience as a patient. In my case, it prevented me from getting the follow-up guidance I was supposed to receive after being put on medication. I saw a nurse practitioner ( Alex Hughes) for a male hormone/testosterone issue. I was prescribed medication and scheduled for a follow-up appointment with the doc about 1.5 months after I started the meds for a bloodwork analysis. This would be the visit where the doc assesses how my body is reacting to the medication, and how to proceed -- whether to up or lower the dosage, or maybe get off the meds. I never had the opportunity to have that follow-up appointment because the front office staff couldn't bill me properly for the tele-health session. This happened for two separate tele-health appointments. I did not see the doctor in either instance. And I still have not received guidance from Dr. Shaw's office about what the medication they prescribed is doing to my body. I called the office and spoke with front office staff twice about getting invoiced, so I could pay the $200 tele-health fee. No resolution. I emailed staff repeatedly over multiple days begging for a payment link. No resolution. I also used the patient portal to communicate and asked to pay. No resolution. I contacted Dr. Shaw's office multiple times via multiple avenues when it was convenient for me to take time from my day(s) to do so. I work on deadlines, and can't jump away from work easily at a moment's notice. I impressed on the staff the necessity to get this handled ASAP while the time was available on my end. The entire situation turned into a huge nuisance when Dr. Shaw's office began robo calling and texting me randomly during the work week saying I hadn't yet paid for the upcoming tele-health appointment that I had all but begged his staff to charge me for (through multiple phone calls, emails and messages in the patient portal). I don't want random robo calls in the middle of my day ever. I also don't understand why it would require more than two phone calls with two separate staffers to pay for a follow-up appointment. The staff should have been able to invoice me IMMEDIATELY when I asked on the phone over the span of two calls, or when I asked via email or in the patient portal. The front office staff simply isn't trained properly. Long story short -- I was put on medication that altered my the makeup of my blood and then denied the opportunity to see the NP who prescribed that medication because the front office staff doesn't know how to invoice patients for tele-health follow-up appointments. On another occasion, aside from the hormone/testosterone issue, the NP ordered a procedure that the front office staff had never heard of. As a result, Dr. Shaw's office couldn't schedule me for the procedure that day. I was told that office staff would follow up. They never did. I had to call back two weeks later to ask what's up, and even then the front office staff was still clueless about the procedure. I had to wait for the NP's nurse to call me back (again, a multiple phone call situation). She explained how the front office staff was unaware of the procedure the NP was ordering, despite Dr. Shaw advertising for when you're put on hold during a phone call with his office. After a two-week delay, I was finally scheduled for this procedure, but only after I took more time out of my day to follow up and make sure it was scheduled. There is a reoccurring theme here from people who have left negative reviews about Dr. Shaw's office: The staff simply does not respect their patient's time. I would 100 percent agree. I'd add to that they also seem to lack training in basic front office procedure -- billing customers and being familiar with procedures the doctor's are offering. Save yourself the grief and go to another urologist where you the front office staff is properly trained, and your time will be respected. read more

Having a health issue is very stressful and when every appt/procedure is over an hour and a half later than the time they tell you and 11 other people go in that arrived after you it feels like you are not at all important. And listening to office staff gab for a hour and a half who are more concerned what meal they want for Christmas and Secret Santa sure doesn't help confidence at all. I had prostate size reduction surgery using a new procedure called "Aquablation." Procedure was done at St David's surgical hospital in Round Rock. My personal experience was fantastic. Dr. Shaw's office staff as well as physician assistants were all exceptional. Dr. Shaw performed the procedure to perfection. My prostate size was so large, I couldn't void urine & my sciatic nerve was being pinched off to the point where I could no longer drive as I could no longer use my right foot. I was driving with my left foot for both gas pedal & for brake. I totally recovered post-operation, and my right leg is now being properly innervated by the right sciatic nerve. I also have no more problems with voiding urine. The urology institute run by Dr. Shaw is top notch & highly, highly recommended. I thank God for guiding me to the right urologist. God will most certainly bless "The Urology Institute" and everyone who works there. read more

The "Institute" is full of hacks & butchers. I had a procedure here, that was needless, barbaric, left me traumatized, and provided little relief. I was left bleeding maimed, unable to urinate and in horrible pain. They are totally clueless about patient care and comfort. I also had a post op follow up that Dr Shaw could not even be bothered to show up for. I had to wait for almost an hour in an empty office to finally be seen by the Nurse Practitioner. I should have read the reviews ahead of time. The people at Austin Urology Institute are straight-up dickheads. I guess that only makes sense. I came for a vasectomy consult, which was $55 for about 5 minutes with a nurse who talked at 300 mph. No one said anything about a charge when I made the appointment. When I arrived, the receptionist was extremely rude. In spite of everything, I decided to call and schedule the vasectomy and was told I'd be required to pay a $150 deposit but could cancel within a week. The person on the phone was brusque, cutting me off and demanding payment before we had even set a date. My partner and I ultimately decided to take a different approach for birth control. I called within a week to cancel my appointment and was told my deposit wasn't refundable even though I was canceling within a week and even though the purpose of the deposit is not just to reserve a slot but to purchase specific goods and services I will never receive. The person on the phone then lied to me and claimed the deposit had always been nonrefundable, no matter the time of cancelation. She also cut me off repeatedly during the call. I can't speak to the quality of medical care, although the other reviews suggest that there is a lot to be desired. But I can tell you that Austin Urology Institute is eager to take your money. read more

I came to Dr. Shaw after my own urologist advised me that they'd no longer work with my insurance company. Having been through "self-pay" in a previous episode, I couldn't handle paying for services and then arguing for a year to get reimbursed, because a provider was suddenly out of network. I had attended a lecture years ago at which Dr. Shaw discussed men's health issues, affecting older guys like me, late 60s. He was conscientious, humorous and appeared to be the brightest guy in the room. I have prostate cancer, and I have my suspicions that my previous doctors simply missed a previous high PSA score--that later revealed to be not only cancerous, but also tremendously aggressive and metastasized. Plus, the radical prostatectomy was necessary by the time I was diagnosed, and it carries the worst side effects imaginable. Incontinence has been the result of the surgery and it's dehumanizing. Intolerable and just plain scary. It crushes any social life you have. Fortunately, Dr. Shaw referred me to a colleague of his who specializes in the field, and he informed me of a treatment that may prove to cure me. At the old practice, I often felt that doctors were only informing me on a "need to know basis," which was basically devoid of offering me any hope. Dr. Shaw has given hope back to me for the first time since I was diagnosed 10 months ago. For me, the guy's a Godsend. read more

Had a procedure here back in 2014. Long story short, this procedure pretty much ruined my sex life. He cut off tissue on my penis that I didn't consent to, I guess for cosmetic purposes at his own discretion. Lost a lot of sensitivity and feeling. When I confronted him about the outcome, I felt like he just smirked at me and tried to blame it on other stuff while throwing expensive medication at it that never worked. I mean he did the surgery and i had no issues before hand. Once tissue is gone, it's gone. Never once apologized, and his arrogance and drive of money seems very apparent. I should have hired a lawyer when I had the chance. Mentally this has taken a huge toll on me with depression and anger. The actual surgical experience was great, the MAs and the doc were awesome. HOWEVER, I developed a large lump along with radiating pain into my lower abdomen so bad I went to the ER 4 days after the vasectomy. I've since gotten better but still have some pain 2 weeks later. This office is great! The ladies at the front desk were kind and warm greating us as soon as we walked in the door. The wait to go back was very short maybe 5 minutes. Once back they went over a few things and started prepping for the procedure. The doc came in and was very nice talking and joking with us through the whole procedure that hubby said he barely felt. His skills showed making the whole thing look easy! He provided us with a goody bag that included pain killers, supportive underwear, and the sperm test kits. The entire procedure took maybe 15 minutes and we were out the door. Hubby is now a week post procedure and feeling great. While uncomfortable for a few days, he didn't even need the pain killers. I cannot respect a practice or a Physician who does not respect their patients' time. I understand that sisuations come up but you do not leave a patient in the waiting room an hour after their appointment and not even advise them that the Physician is behind for what ever reason. Dr. Shaw is probably the coolest Doc I have ever been to. Not that many guys are super excited to get their balls snipped. Honestly Dr. Shaw's jokes/humor makes the terrifying experience feel like your just BS'ing with one of your buddies at the bar. If you have ever nicked your boys while trimming or accidentally cut the boys while shaving then that's pretty comparable to the pain you will feel during the procedure. Doc even gives you a bad ass pairs of boxer briefs to wear home and a gel pack (aka bag of peas) for after the procedure. Would 1,000% recommend Dr. Shaw for anyone looking into getting their boys snipped. read more

Dr Lawrence Tsai is fantastic, both for general urology health care and for HoLEP surgery. I was referred to him by my primary care physician and I can see why. Dr Tsai was thorough in his testing, always took time to explain things in detail, and did an amazing job. When I suddenly needed to get HoLEP surgery, his office managed to get me scheduled rapidly and made the process easy. Most importantly, his technique was superb: I immediately felt better than I had in a decade, had almost no discomfort, and pretty much recovered within days. After dreading the "Big V" for a year or so I finally had it done on Friday and now I feel like a huge baby. It was no big deal at all and Dr. Shaw was great. Here's how it went for the curious: I made the appointment a few weeks ago and my insurance covered half the cost. On Wednesday I picked up my Xanax and on Friday morning I was in the office. They called me back after just a few minutes of waiting and a nurse explained the procedure and then cleaned me up. About 10 minutes later Dr. Shaw comes in. We have a little small talk, he assures me it's no big thing and we get started. First he does the little spray jet to deaden the area. I barely felt it and that's the worst part. The rest is a few sounds and smells and 15 minutes later I'm at the Whataburger Drive thru. Dr. Shaw was great at keeping me talking to take my mind off what was going on. The last 2.5 days I've spent laying around and icing the jewels. No swelling or bruising and no pain, just some slight discomfort. We've all heard horror stories so I'm beyond happy that I went to Dr. Shaw for my snip. read more
