Despite having a Chinatown, I would say Philadelphia doesn't have that many truly good places for Chinese food I would hit again and again. however, this place was the last place I went to before leaving town and I think it was the best I had tried so far both during a short 2-3 day trip and also across 4 years when I used to live here more. If you want good breakfast type foods, this is the place to go. We were not disappointed if anything impressed with their beef 'burger' and egg pancake. Those flavors were not ambitious but comfortable. the liang pi was good- bright clean flavors with a good amount of chew to the noodles. Can't attest for noodles since we were here for breakfast but my husband reports it was above average compared to the Nan Zhou noodle house around the block. service was ok- I think they could be more attentive when it comes to paying bill at the end or flagging someone down once they have finished delivering your food and taking your order. the space was kind of small but there are large tables to accommodate large parties. The ambiance is no frills and actually more quiet than some other places that I think are too rowdy to make the eating experience comfortable. I think it's a solid place for breakfast- economical and delicious. I can't attest if I would come here for sure each time I come back to Philadelphia but would put it on my list as places worth checking out across the Chinatown restaurants we had hit already. read more

Service can be curt but we go for the speed of preparation and not to have a red carpet rolled out. When other shops might have a wait, LanZhou is typically funneling its customers in and out at a decent pace, even during festivals. They offer hand pulled noodles and knife shaved, which are what we usually go for-- their seafood soup includes a decent amount of seafood pieces. While it may not be the freshest protein, it's abundant and fine enough to make a rich stock. Came here recently and tried a whole bunch of things. The food here is pretty nice. I got the lamb stewed noodle soup, which I honestly felt like was super comparable to the stuff I'd eat in China. I also had the 'Chinese hamburger' (this is really such a bad translation of the thing, which tasted quite good as well. I have to commend them as well for getting the 'mo' style bread, which is not easy to find here in the US. Lastly, I also got the hot sauce fish fillet 水煮鱼 which was honestly really good as well I would have liked to try some of the vegetables here, and also some of the dumplings, though I don't know if they are home made. The soybean milk and fried bread stick are on the breakfast menu and we got them in the afternoon: the fried bread stick was not great as it seemed like it has been sitting out for a bit after being fried this morning. The soybean milk was ok, but it seemed like it was a bit burnt/overcooked. You definitely only come here for the food, and not much for the atmosphere. You get what you pay for, and in this case you get a lot for cheap. This was a hefty bowl of noodles with a delicious broth for around $9. I cannot emphasize enough how shocked I was that I got THIS much noodle for the price point. Finding the beef slices was also like a treasure chest-- every time I thought I'd finished eating the beef, I'd discover more beef pieces in the soup, which is just ideal ya know? I was so surprised by the mixed reviews-- definitely the service is lacking, but this isn't a service type of place. You come in, get quick service with warm food, and you're out. We needed to pick up some things at RTM so we decided we would just pick a restaurant in Chinatown near where ever we found parking and get dinner. Luckily for us we parked near LanZhou. We ordered the cucumbers in garlic sauce bc I always order the cucumber app when I see it on a menu. I ordered the spare rib noodle soup w shaved noodles and it was soooo good. I don't know if that's how it's supposed to be but the hand pulled noodles were raw. I microwaved it before eating it too and it still had some noodles were like drippy dough, uncooked. I did take out so I wasn't going to walk a mile back to complain about it. The beef was good though, not dry and was flavorful. The liang pi cold noodles had too less of the sauce so it was like plain wide noodles. That was disappointing overall. I was really looking forward to try this place when I'm in town. I LOVE noodle soups, and Lanzhou's noodle soups are the star of the show! The broth is rich, tasty, and authentic. Amount of noodles is very generous, but I did with they had more meat. Still, the meal was filling and homey -- definitely hits the spot, and all for less than $9! Even though they're located right at the corner of the Chinatown gate, I had no clue this place existed. Unfortunately, I think they're overshadowed by the popularity if NanZhou Noodle House, but I actually prefer how LanZhou makes their noodle soup (although they have more limited options, LanZhou's broth and noodles are better in my opinion). I think a house special noodle soup with a combination of their meats listed would really be a great addition to LanZhou's menu. Their seating is meant for groups of 4+, so if you come alone or with a date, be prepared to be seated at a larger table. Not uncommon for some Chinese restaurants! My go to for authentic comfort chinese food. There chinese burgers are always a must as well as their cold sesame noodles. Their hand pulled noodles are also amazing whether it be in soup or stir fried and their dumplings are quite satisfying. ROACH IN MY MAPO TOFU I had a bowl of noodle soup with shaved noodles in the restaurant and took an order of mapo tofu to go yesterday. I decided to have my mapo tofu tonight. To my horror, I found this thing in the mix, halfway through. I thought it was a charred piece of pepper at first but it had odd stripes and was too circular for that and my stomach sank as I turned it over and saw legs and antennae. Pleased and satisfied. Warm fulfilling food for a decent price, along with kind service. That's basically all you need for a good restaurant experience. I used a little broken Mandarin but gave up towards the end and reverted back to English; it was fine. I got the lamb stewed noodle soup ($8.95). It came with shaved noodles, vermicelli noodles, bok choy (or shanghai cai, I can't tell which), wood ear, and cubed pieces of lamb. The broth was milky rich and filled with lamb flavor. I didn't add any chili oil or black pepper purely because I didn't want to cover up that amazing flavor. Also finally got to try the Chinese hamburger for the first time ever after spending years watching Mikey Chen awe about it on YouTube. I have no reference but I thought it was incredibly delicious. The pork was juicy and flavorful. The meat juice soaked into the soft interior of the bun, which had a crispy exterior for added textural fun. It's a pretty big sandwich for $4, too. Could totally see myself doing quick stops here on future Chinatown trips for that quick yummy snack. Plus, they take credit card (min of $10). This place gets five stars for their noodles and soup base. Seriously, the noodles are so chewy! And the soup base on its own is flavorful. But when it comes to the dishes as a whole, the flavors are just a bit off. For the beef noodle soup, the beef was just okay and could use a fattier cut of the beef. For the seafood noodle soup, the imitation crab and shrimp tasted like they were cooked too long, and the clam didn't taste the freshest. The pork and cabbage dumplings were the same - nice chewy skin, but again the flavors inside were just off. Would go back for the noodles but probably would not order anything else.
