Looking for a restaurant in Philly Chinatown and this one popped up on my search. I read "family owned" and "authentic" and decided to give it a try. There were 7 of us but they seated us promptly. Service was great, friendly engaging waitress, constantly refilling water and tea. We even got a free appetizer because my sister correctly guessed it was Jasmine tea we were served! The service was nice and accommodating. We were traveling with a stroller, so we weren't sure if there was enough space. They helped us with the stroller and making space. The food was okay. Came here for dinner on Saturday night (there was no wait) and tried their rice noodle soup - I got the tomato base with beef slices for protein, and the set comes with veggies and noodles. It came out piping hot and with generous portions. The ingredients tasted super fresh. The only improvement is that the broth was slightly lacking in flavor / watery. Noodle soups were a staple in my diet growing up, so whenever I'm feeling nostalgic, I always come to this chinese restaurant that specializes in traditional rice noodles dishes to hit that spot, because it tastes authentic. Honestly, I also probably order from here at least once a month, whenever I don't feel like cooking. One of their popular dishes is their chicken fish maw soup, which I love and would highly rec! It's homey, VERY generous in portion size, and it feels like something an asian grandma would make. The broth is flavorful with herbal undertones, and the noodles have a springy bouncy texture that pairs nicely with the variety of chicken, mushrooms, and tofu skin in the soup. Besides this, they also offer other soup bases such as Tom Yum (has a great spicy kick, my second fav), tomato (tastes like tomato hot pot), and ramen. They also serve stir-fry noodle dishes with a nice "qq texture," but just watch out for the spiceee. Before your food comes out, they provide free side dishes as well that includes pickled cabbage and peanuts, which are a good palette opener. Mala Beef, Fish Slices with Rice Noodles This super hit the spot. Each soup was chock full of goodies, from wood ear mushrooms to tofu to corn and more. And the beef and fish were so so tender and excellent. The flavors of both soups were on point! I think mine was with the beef brisket (either that or the beef slices). Was able to stop in by myself on a very cold day to warm up. It's a pretty cozy cafe setting inside and you're greeted and sat quick. Free kaiweicai (small bowl "appetizer" to start the meal) is brought over of cabbage and peanuts. Ordered the mala spicy beef shank noodle soup and wood ear black fungus garlic salad. Both very tasty. The mala spicy broth was the perfect balance of hot and numbing, it warmed up my taste buds and my temperature. It also had corn, enoki mushroom, bok choy, tripe, and tofu pieces in it. You can customize and add other things to your soup if you want. Service was great and helpful, and good value from the menu. I thought the menu was a bit confusing with what is included for a set price, but I went ahead and got a mala fish soup "as is." The bowl for this was humongous, filled to the brim with fish slices, bean sprouts, woodear, and corn. The soup was spicy, but did not actually taste like much. Rice noodles were soft - I probably would have preferred ramen here. Maybe this was in part user error, but I did not enjoy this bowl of noodles as much as I would have expected to. I've ordered from here multiple times through UberEats and I am always happy with my food. My food usually arrives quickly and still hot enough where I don't need to reheat it. The packaging works very well for delivery orders, especially when most of my delivery drivers are on bicycles. The rice noodles come separate and the bag it comes in (which has really nice art) prevents any spillage from leaving the bag. I'm a big fan of the mala flavor, ingredients, and quantity. The food is alright but not excellent: ordered the house special fish maw & chicken soup with noodle; it was decent, nice flavor (although not rich on chicken flavor even though it is a chicken soup). The disappointing part is that the chicken meat was tough, it is not tender/soft. The soup is somewhat overpowering, (could be umami seasoning?) because I couldn't get any flavor from the fish maw. Or perhaps the fish maw was suppose to be bland, not sure. Other than the food, the staff aren't hospitality minded; one of the staff intruded during mid-meal asking if we were done ordering, then immediately slammed the check on the table when we responded "no". Fine. Wish they could've ask how was the meal and would you like more water instead. Anyhow, we continue eating, and then a short moment later another staff came asking if we are ready to pay, but we aren't even finished the meal at this point. They are really pushy to get us out. Something to note was that the online payment portal wasn't working, so we had to pay in person. The to go packaging was phenomenal, in that it separated the broth and the meat/noodles to keep everything from becoming overcooked and soggy. Walked in on a rainy day for some soup and we immediately got a friendly welcome from Jamie. He was running the whole front of the house and to go orders like a champ and still was friendly enough to talk to everyone in the dining room personally. He was incredibly nice and funny. Came here after cause my friend picked the place. Server who took our order seemed nice, then she just randomly left after taking our order... Then my friend get their order first with mine coming out after they were 3/4 done. In that time, the new waitress was too busy trying to sell items than go grab my food that was sitting in the kitchen (you can hear the aggressive kitching bell) that she clearly ignored. I've waited before, you can say excuse me and go grab food than just let it sit there.The two tables around us got a dish before mine and no tables got their dishes for their party in a reasonable time (4 tables total at the time and 2 came after us and another table). I ordered the sauerkraut with sliced fish. There was barely a hint of sauerkraut flavor or even spice with a 1 pepper rating and tasted like Chicken brother sprinkled with flavoring. The slides fish was weird. Had some weird coating on it and weird texture. I noticed some tables had sauces and ours didn't and the waitress didn't even bother bringing one. We ordered the coconut jelly which was just a flan version of the coconut dessert you get at dim sum. This was all a waste of calories and better option nearby for soup noodles. read more
