I came with two of my girlfriends for restaurant week. For $30, you can get a small plate, large plate & dessert. For the all plate, I got the spring roll. It was good, nothing out of the ordinary. My friends got the scallion pancakes and the vegetable dumpling. Out of the three, the scallion pancakes were my favorite, though they were on the greasy side. For the large plate, I got the scallion chicken. It was a large portion, enough to share amongst friends. It also had a great flavor to it. The chicken came with a side of rice. We got a bowl to share between the three of us, but it wasn't enough. We were able to ask for more without an added charge. Han Dynasty has multiple locations and each one isn't exactly the same. I actually like that about Han, it tells me that the head chef has the freedom to make slight changes to the menu items based of their individual skills. I like the decor, it's very bright and open with a nice view of the active city street. The location is in the in the heart of University City which is very clean and I had no issue getting meter street parking. My favorite dish at this location was the excellent Wonton Soup. Han Dynasty is always a hit. Don't be deterred by the fact that they have a few locations - all are consistently good. The service is unbelievably fast, and the flavors are vibrant. If you're not a spice fan, just be wary of the ratings. I consider myself to have a strong love and tolerance for spice, but I max out at 7/10 at Han Dynasty. Thankfully, all their dishes have the spice level next to it, but don't be afraid to ask. One of my favorite, most simple, most comforting dishes is the Cold Sesame Noodles. The Dan Dan Noodles are also a hit, and the amount of food you get is quite frankly a steal. I'm a fan of the dumplings here, too. The Garlic Sauce style with your protein of choice never disappoints. I could bathe in that sauce. The service at this location is okay, but nothing to really rave about. It's pretty fast casual. They have a bar with TVs and a selection of alcohol. This is a good place for groups because it's spacious, with lots of big tables, but it's also perfect a solo dine or a date. You'll have cravings for Han Dynasty for days, and you'll probably have the leftovers to satiate them. I ordered something different this time and tried the dry pepper style fish and scallion pancakes. It said the fish would be 8/10 spicy, but it was more like 5/10... I really wish it had more heat. Came for a special tasting menu event and UYE. The location is stylish, spacious and great for groups. It was fun to reconnect with "Old Yelpers" and meet some IRL for the first time. Staff were fantastic. They served the whole dining room at one time and still paid attention to whether our water was full or not. They kept track of requests for extra drinks or whatever we needed and were really welcoming. Even Han himself took the time to welcome us, talk with us about the food and his approach to the tasting menu. There were about 15 courses. Standouts were the dan dan noodles and ma po tofu. There was a meat (pork belly?) with preserved vegetable, and I really enjoyed the pungent preserved vegetable. "General Han's chicken" was not greasy or sweet like other "general" chicken out there but had an earthy spiciness and pickled chilis that made it a personal favorite. Oh, and there were garlicky bok choy, fish fillet with bok choy, shrimp and vegetables, dumplings, ribs...so many flavors, all of them delicious. Beef filet with noodles were good too. The clear noodles were good too. They mentioned that the food would be spicy, and I got a little nervous that I wouldn't be able to keep up. But nothing was overly spicy on the menu that I enjoyed. Here with a number of Yelpers as an unofficial Yelp event and friends of theirs. The group was a bit big for me even though it was only 8 and we were all courteous but such a wide variety of interests and hobbies. I normally don't check in to most places I go to for privacy related reasons but being "reminded" to do so, I did so for the group. Some places offer Free stuff and discounts to do so- so maybe I need to ( casually) reconsider. I went here specifically for a food event. The food itself here in general and even at this event was probably 4 stars . When I was at the Old City one once or twice, I felt something about the food felt Americanized for me. Maybe I didn't know what to order and I was surrounded by people who just do what is in the mainstream and aren't open to different textures and spices- that can certainly be a factor. Also when I was at the Old City one years ago, there was a very dark room in the back for a board game group. The group was really into the restaurant but the setting just didn't work for the group and hence at least part of the reason for that short stint. This particular game group is still around- just in other places. Maybe it was my lack of knowledge of true food appreciation as this seems to be the very thing the owner? is not a fan of. He told us a story of how his mother took him to an Americanized Chinese restaurant one time and he was basically like this food is crap. However, the effort put into the food that I couldn't initially appreciate without talking and listening to others more and with the introductions to one of the yelpers knowing the owner? made this truly a 5 star experience. Another good thing about this group is that they were much more open to food than your typical person on the street. The beauty of living in or near a bigger city is that there are usually enough people who like different cuisines to keep places like this open and running well. Much/some? of the food here has to be prepared in advance and you can't just have it ordered last minute as they don't necessarily carry that item. All the food was delicious and a friend told me he tasted cardamom and some other spices he couldn't name that were familiar to him. The dim sum pork dumpling was good but wasn't a stand out for me. The spinach dish was tasty and not overly salty but there wasn't quite enough for my group of 8 or 9 for a good sampling. The fish with a lot of sauce, there was too much sauce it seemed. Chunk with a lot of flavor but it felt like the quantity didn't accentuate the dish. They do this kind of event every month- typically the last Monday of the month but holidays can change that. So if you like this kind of thing and don't mind sitting with a big group of people you might not know if you don't have a big group yourself, then this is a food experience worth considering. Han Dynasty (or, Handy Nasty as friends call it), has been around Philadelphia long enough to now be an institution around these parts. By the same token, its distinct take on Szechuanese cuisine may deserve its own nomenclature as, "Nouveau Szechuan" Chinese food. Why? Because, although Han is true to the spice quotient of hot and numbing spices in heavy use of small red Szechuan chili peppers and the ultra sinus draining black star peppers that act as an anesthesia to the mouth, their application of high quality ingredients, both vegetable and meat, move it beyond what is normally found in either Chengdu, Chongqing or the local "hot" kitchens in this fair city. Beyond that, Han knows the American pallet enjoys a little sweetness in their grub; and he obliged with a touch more sugar than found in the old country, to provide that counterbalance to the heat that attracts more customers and keeps old ones coming back. So, while a purist would complain about lack of cultural integrity, the foodist would applaud and appreciate the potential improvement. As to our recent takeout meal of Dry Pepper Chicken, Cumin Style Lamb and Garlic Sauce Style Beef, we offer nothing but applause for the effort. Even at our kitchen table, they were each hot and delicious, with only the Garlic Sauce suggesting the addition of ein bissel sugar. Each was sweat-inducing and uniquely wonderfully numbing. Even upon a 90 second microwave reheat, they remained excellent, with the chicken still somewhat crisp and all sauces holding their power. We came by for a late Sunday lunch and opted for non-spicy items: 1-Cold sesame noodle: perfect on a hot day, noodles were chewy and delicious. 2-Crispy rice style chicken: chicken with wood ear mushrooms and vegetables with gravy and four crispy rice cakes. This came with a HUGE bowl of rice that we did not finish. The gravy was good but the rice cakes were personally confusing for me, I think the dish could probably do without it. Looking at other tables, regardless of how many people you have, they give one big bowl of rice for the table to share and you can ask for refills. Pretty terrible service experience. First, the server forgot our table. We had to flag him down to place our lunch order. When the food came, only one out of two meals came out. We had to flag the server down again to ask him where the other meal was. He told us the restaurant was busy, the cooks didn't speak english, and he only makes $3/hr. My friend finished his meal and my meal still wasn't out yet. Other tables who came in after us were getting their food. None of the staff seemed to care and were actually bothered that we were weren't happy about not getting our food. No manager came out, no apology, no comps offered (other than the meal that didn't come out).
