Unassuming. This place is just good. It's located in the back of a corner store, and it's a hodge pudge of chairs both inside and outside. The margarita was huge and tasty, a little sweet but I am not complaining. Hubby ordered faijitas and they were great, I had the fried chicken tacos - which were like a Mexican egg roll. the special thing about this place is the mom and pop atmosphere, everyone was friendly and food was great. Fun outdoor seating and the overhead fans and wide tables made us feel COVID-prepped. The tacos were deliclous, and the pastor won the day for the teens.. different than normal. The hubby thought the chorizo asada tacos were his fave while I loved the shrimp tacos topped with the house SPICY tomatillo sauce. No flan or tres leche so had the plantains and cannot say they were what I normally enjoy for dessert. Hard pass on those next time. The traditional margarita was a monster and glad we split it! I have gone to this many times in the past before the renovation and have enjoyed it a lot. I went about a week ago and was surprised, as far as I could see there seems to be only a couple of very young employees handling both the front of the house and the kitchen, I mean really young. The server although young and inexpirienced was pleasent and took care of me in a satisfactory manner. The food not so much, I could go into it but let' leave it at that. I was amazed that these two were all there was to take care of things. The food should never have been served the way it was. I have spent my whole adult life in the resaurant business and was amazed at the lack of any supervision. I'm not concerned with the age of staff at all but letting them kind of run things by the seat of their pants was really disheartening. read more

Thankfully, the first Mexican restaurant we stopped at kept us waiting at the hostess stand too long, so we left in search of another. So we luckily found LasIsabellas! Don't be fooled by the exterior! We entered through the attached Mexican grocery store and found our way to a small hostess stand. We placed our order after previewing the QR code menu (their website is also outstanding!) The chips were freshly prepared flour tortillas, and the salsa and guacamole were both great. My daughter and I each had an order of chicken fajitas, but we could've easily split one order. The fajitas came with freshly made flour tortillas. I found out about Las Isabella's about a year ago and go there often. The food is always delicious. My favorite thing to order is the Asada tacos. The margaritas are very flavorful. I've never had to wait for a table and the food always comes out fast. I've never had a bad experience and can't recommend it enough if you are looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant, especially if you love tacos! read more

Excellent food and an authentic atmosphere. It's located in the rear of a Mexican store but don't let that throw you. The homemade chips and salsa are outstanding and the guacamole is fresh and very good. The prices for individual tacos are very reasonable so you can get a variety of tastes. My brother in-law got a chimichanga and it was quite large and he said very good as well. There's a "gringo" option for some dishes which means not quite as spicy but everything was excellent for me without going that route. Would highly recommend for authentic Mexican food! read more

Wow! What a pleasant surprise! This cute market has all my childhood favorite Mexican treats and they sell a little of several different types of foods, plus meat and fish. The outdoor seating is a cute little garden patio. The plastic coverings they've hung for the winter were plenty to keep me warm without a jacket- and it was in the 30s outside! We enjoyed a margarita with chips and fresh guacamole and pretended it wasn't winter. The sopes were delicious, with huge chunks of fresh cheese and avocado. We also enjoyed the enchiladas verdes, filled with delicious grilled chicken (not bland boiled chicken). Fresh avocado and ripe tomatoes on top made it a treat. The service was so friendly, positive, and attentive. We will definitely be back the next time we drive through Hickory! read more

We stopped in for lunch and were all amazed at how great the food was. We started with the homemade guacamole. It was thick and chunky and freshly made. Then we all decided on the special goat stew. It was fabulous. We had a bowl of rich broth with rice and chickpeas served with large chunks of lean goat meat that were tender along with a garnish of limes, cilantro, onions and fresh tortillas. The place doesn't look like much from the outside, but the outdoor seating area is filled with plants that give it a lush and tranquil vibe reminiscent of Mexico. Do not listen to Johnny P with the 3 star review, he does not know jack! This place is the SH!t!! Authentic and great customer service is all I can say! The food is as real as it gets! They offer tacos by the pound, so basically I bought lamb tacos for $13.50 and it came with a ton of tortillas, cilantro, onions and limes with a pound of lamb, holy cow! Victor ( the owner) is the man! This is a family run business, with a store in the front and restaurant in the back which is the best of both worlds. We found this gem by chance and will be driving almost an hour to come back in the near future. I've been eating authentic Mexican food for 35 years and this place takes me back to dinners with my friends abuela (grandmother). Hope this place is open for a long time. As long as the gringos (I'm a gringo) do not complain about not having ground beef they should be open for a long time and be fine. The place doesn't look like much from the outside, and the entrance we came into was the grocery. But we were greeted by a very sweet young lady who seated us promptly. The music was so authentic the other diners Mexican, which is a good sign for good Mexico can food. The waiter gave us very good advice. Went for a lunch with great expectations due to reviews with 5 stars, unfortunately it was an utter disappointment. I love the authentic vibe and the menu is truly authentic Mexican. To start off we purchased the chips & salsa, salsa was delicious but their homemade tortilla chips had great taste but were so greasy and tried to pat the grease off with a napkin it didn't work. I ordered a variety of authentic tacos of chicken, pork and chorizo again everything is homemade and like their chips it was laden in grease. My husband decided to try their fried chicken thighs and legs which were cut laterally which is fine just strange and true to my description above it was so greasy it was practically non eatable. His refried beans were soupy as was the rice. The only thing good on his plate was the fried plaintain. I truly was disappointed because I'm gluten intolerant and most Mexican foods are gluten-free. I hope the owners see this post and take criticism because flavor was there in most foods but the grease ruined it. read more

do not waste your time. This place used to be bomb- especially for hickory. But this experience was so bad I redownloaded yelp to post this review. First, the system is so weird here. You have to order and pay for your food at the register without even sitting down and they don't have any paper menus. This means you have to tip before you even get "service". I tipped 15% because I have had good experiences here (years ago). After you sit, there is no service aside from someone bringing the food to you. If you want a refill of a drink, chips (NOT COMPLIMENTARY???), or anything that you didn't pay for at the register before sitting down- you have to get up and go back to the register inside the building. Next- the food. There was essentially an entire onion in my side of quac (8 dollars- im not kidding). None of my party's food was good- all of it was either too bland or had too much onion to even eat. This place was horrible and has honestly put me in a bad mood for the rest of my night. 3 Stars- Ask if the menu prices are correct because we ordered the mix fajitas with steak and shrimp priced at $12 on the menu plus Salsa and chips and all was well. The steak had burned to a crisp near the bottom of the hot plate and the shrimp was over cooked but we did not complain. The bill came and we have been charged $14.99 for Shrimp Fajitas?!? The waiter could not explain, at the register, the cashier said that they are waiting on the new menus to come with the right prices. No apology or correction of the price charged. I asked what chicken or steak fajitas new price is and she did not know, she said that it was all in the computer and sees it when it is rang up. Get out of the car and go in! I was hesitant at first, but by far the BEST authentic Mexican food I have had including authentic food from San Antonio! It does not look like much of a place, but the back was warm and cozy and food was AMAZING. Starting with the fresh margarita, incredible homemade chips and guac, homemade tortilla shells for tacos and fresh churros for dessert!
