Got a PPI today and it was a wonderful experience! I was able to talk to the mechanic (Joe) directly and ask questions and he showed me different issues with the vehicle. He took pictures of the undercarriage to show me corrosion and walked me through some of the things to ask the dealership to do following inspection. Issues with battery, corrosion, alignment, and brakes overlooked by the dealership's inspection team were revealed to me at Auto Exam. Scott is a stud. No, seriously. I was looking at a car at Texas Auto Online (see review, boo), and I decided to bring it over there for an inspection. He found out that the car had been in an accident (clean CarFax and AutoCheck) and that it had a "severe oil leak." I DEFINITELY recommend bringing the car that you are looking to buy there to be checked out. A buddy of mine in the automotive industry told me that only 20% of car accidents are actually reported to CarFax and AutoCheck. The rest somehow scoot by. Crazy! read more

So, I heard it was a good idea to bring a vehicle here for an inspection prior to buying it. They do an inspection and tell me that the car needs a new starter. And they tell me that if I really want a good deal on a vehicle I should go to Durrett Motors on Shaver and they give me one of this other dealers cards on my with my inspectors name on it. Now, as they say, I was born at night, but not last night. I then return to the original dealer and show them the report, and surprise, the starter had been replaced 1 week ago and was still under warranty. This inspector couldn't tell the difference between a new starter and an old broken starter? And tried to get me to dump my first dealer and then use their 'recommended' dealer? I smell a rat. Erik with auto exam was awesome, I got star-stuck with the aesthetics of a truck. Good thing I got the truck inspected or I would have been financially committed to a dressed up piece of junk. I was told by the salesman it was a clean vehicle yeah, sure guess clean doesn't mean clean running. The 3 month warranty would not have covered unseen corrosion. Sure I spent the $169 that was less than 2% of the total amount I would have been responsible to pay. Depending on the down payment ? 10.0% don't know about you I work too hard to be throwing my money away. We bought a used car with a three-day return period, so decided to use AUTO EXAM. Although there a few companies offering this service, this particular one was recommended by our credit union (in fact the loan officer related that she used Auto Exam on her personal used car purchase) and they have been in business for over 20 years...impressive. Although we were coming from Spring and they are located on the Gulf Freeway, we are pleased that we used this particular company. I called beforehand and was able to book an appointment for a couple of hours out...really fast. Upon arrival, we were seen as scheduled, in fact, a few minutes early. The inspection lasted over an hour and the inspector/technician, "Scott", was extremely thorough, knowledgable, and competent. He spent quite a bit of time afterwards showing us the problematic areas and providing 8 X 10 pictures. The car-fax related that the vehicle hadn't been in any wreck, but he showed us repainting on the front end and entire side. He found the repainting by measuring in mm via a gauge the thickness of various body components, impressive. He also discovered numerous other deficiencies and above all, water in the trunk under the mats. In summation, we kept the car, but we're pleased to find out it wasn't a flooded vehicle, didn't have major engine problems, nor was there covered up damage we couldn't live with. Had a PPI done by this company and Never Again! I should have listened to the other negative Yelp reviews but they were for extended warranties. Well, here is one for their PPI department. My PPI inspector's name was John and boy did he drop the ball. I'm listing the stuff that he failed to uncover. I gave specific instructions regarding the areas of extra attention. HE FAILED ON ALL FRONTS. Failed to disclose or uncover: S-EDC not operating. This is the electronic damping control $$$$$$ to fix. 14 nice sized dings on the car. Cupholder broken Fan Clutch broken Alarm Buttons on both keys not working Brakes in need of attention. Suspension control arms shot Glove box broken I had a personal conversation with John and he said that the car drove like it just came off the showroom floor. He said that the only ding on the car was on the rear driver's side door. John failed miserably. I'm calling Amex to dispute the charges and hope that this review will help any future customers of Auto Exam to watch out. I would not pay these guys to exam a can of tuna. After realizing what I have to deal with, I called Auto Exam and spoke with Scott, who basically said we offered our service and will not refund you. Scott said we've been in business 20 years and my negative review won's hurt the company. Ok, have it your way Scott. I wish anyone who reads this lets AutoExam know that Yelp does matter and will harm their business. They did an exam on a car I was selling (a 2002 Beetle with 78,000 miles), and they told me "everything is fine" and then told the prospective buyer that my car wouldn't last another 2,000 miles and that there were all kinds of things wrong with it. So of course, the buyer's credit union denied the loan. Then I took my car to CARMAX, and they inspected it and made me a GREAT offer, and they said the ONLY thing wrong was that the upholstery was stained, which I already knew (what can you expect from a 10-year-old car with fabric seats?). This is the second time used them. The first time I felt like based on their inspection I was comfortable buying the vehicle with 36k miles on it and it ran fine for 186k miles. This time I took a lower mileage vehicle to them that I knew had been in a small accident and even showed them the pictures and depended on their expertise to advise me on the condition if the car. I was told that all it need was an alignment. So the dealer agreed to get it aligned. However I was not told that there were after market parts on the vehicle, the protective undercoating were missing bolts, the hood was not aligned properly, molding on damaged side is loose. I purchased the vehicle based on their recommendation and expected a more thorough inspection based on the info I had on the car. Now I am stuck with a vehicle that needs work that I can not afford. Had they would have brought these issues to my attention I could have asked the dealer to make them right or not purchase the vehicle. When I contacted Scott he put it off on me saying I knew more about the car than they did, and that is exactly why I brought it to them with the info I had! I am not a mechanic or a paint and body specialist. I expected more from them and seems to be all they care about is their $$. Thanks for nothing! Terrible customer service. I was denied service as I reached at 4.10 for a 4.00 clock appointment. Mechanic at the counter told me that it takes him around 45 minutes to do the inspection and he won't be able to do it as they close at 5.00. When I complained to the owner he just offered apologies but did not do anything to fix the issue and said they wont be able to inspect the car which I was planning to buy that day. I purchased a extended warranty for my SUV through my credit union who recommended this company. I was told on covered parts that needed replacing a rental would be available if service center had to keep the SUV. I have just used the policy and the dealership has to keep my SUV for a couple of days and now I'm being told that I have to rent a car myself then turn in paperwork to be reimbursed which may take a week or two to get. I'm very unhappy because if I would have know this I would have purchased a warranty through a dealership. I have a ford f-150 and purchased an extended warranty through ford and I needed some work done they provided a rental right on the spot. I paid for close to a $2,000 policy and they initially covered my first claim. I thought it was a great service until I had a second claim for my vehicle warrantee. The customer service employees were rude and disrespectul to me when I tried to contact them regarding the denial of the claim. I still have to deal with them until my warrantee expires in about 2.8 years. I hope my vehicle does not malfunction as to avoid their awful service. They inspected a vehicle I was going to purchase if it passed. Report said tires were 2011-2012. After the left rear sidewall blew out completely on the way home I called them and told the Firestone said the tires were made in June 2010. So my report had false information that caused me to have a near miss accident. When I called them to tell them that their report was false they said they would not reimburse me for any part of the inspection. A false report caused me to pay a lot of money for new tires, towing, etc. Not a good way to do business. read more
