This is the only auto shop I trust to work on my car. They aren't the cheapest but in the long run, due to their honesty and quality workmanship, they will save you money and time. Other shops will charge you less, but mess other things up or try and convince you that you need work done that you don't. Prime example: I saved $100 at Auto Logic vs Precision Tune (Durham) because Precision was trying to get me to buy new rotors, which I did NOT need. Auto Logic also diagnosed the oil leak that Precision Tune caused during a simple oil change I let them do the day before. Plus, Auto Logic treats you like a good human, rather than a ignorant chump! read more

I moved to NC last year and had been lucky enough to not have to have any major repairs done on my car. Unfortunately, that changed a few months ago when I sucked it up to get the ball joints replaced in the front of my car. I had previously been to Chapel Hill Tire across the street, and they had quoted me about $800 in extra work (which wasn't needed) and didn't explain any of it to me, so I went to Auto Logic, on the recommendation of several acquaintances and coworkers, for a second opinion. I scheduled an appointment on my day off (I live about 40 minutes away from Carrboro, but came out because of their reputation) and waited about an hour and a half to have my car looked at. The whole experience was initially very pleasant as everyone is super friendly - they go above and beyond to make you feel comfortable (Bo & Marianne). I was told that only one of the ball joints needed to be replaced (my car was making this ungodly creaking noise) and that I could hold off on the other one - music to my ears! They said they could get the part and get it fixed that day so I hung around Carrboro all day. The part was coming from Raleigh, so it was taking so long that I decided to just bring my car back the next day. I dropped my car off the next morning and took their shuttle to work about a mile away. I went to pick up my car in the early afternoon when it was done and as soon as I started driving it, it made the creaking noise. I was a little upset - but not too much as the sound was really bad on hot, dry days and the day I took it to them, it wasn't really doing it. I did some trouble shooting with the mechanic (Scott, I believe) and he determined that the other side needed to be replaced. He did apologize and say he should have quoted me both from the get go. Slightly frustrating, but not something that was completely unexpected. We went inside and he quoted me a new price and sent me on my way - I would be dropping off the car the next day. I went home and looked over the quote from Chapel Hill Tire (specifically at just the work I needed done) and compared to the prices I was quoted from Auto Logic. After crunching some numbers, it looked as if I was paying $40-$50 more than what I would have across the street. Although it doesn't seem like much in the scheme of things, and their customer service is better...I'm not in the position to be paying extra for said customer service. Not to mention this had turned into a two day fix when it should have been taken care of the first time. For the first time in my life I felt confident enough to negotiate price. I brought up my concerns to Scott, and although I felt like he was a little frustrated, he did lower the price for me. Feeling good, I left my car again, anticipating to pick it up in the early afternoon. I waited all morning and had not heard a thing, so I called to check in. This was around 1pm (i waited because i knew the guys take lunch). They told me my car was on the lift and should be done soon. 3pm roles around and I still hadn't heard and was starting to get frustrated. I called again and Marianne told me that Scott had been on lunch and that my car would be done within an hour. I explained my frustrations because I had called two hours prior to get an update and it wasn't relayed to me that the technician was on lunch. Marianne was VERY understanding. She apologized and we got off the phone - I was still upset and now never planning on coming back. She called back not even 15 minutes later and told me that this was not how they typically do business and that she was very sorry that my first experience was so bad. After apologizing profusely, she offered to waive the entire second repair (about $300 worth of work) because of how everything was handled. I was floored. I don't know of any auto body shop that would be willing to eat a cost that expensive, especially on a first time customer. Even though I had made up my mind to never come back, I will definitely be trying them out again. And I feel confident enough in them to recommend them to other people who are looking for a good shop. read more

We live in Houston, TX and are N.C. natives planning to move back in the near future. I asked about a purchase of a new 4WD Cadillac Escalade, rates, etc. Guess what ...nobody texted us back with details...they also had background info (excellent top tier credit, etc.) I gave them plus our phones numbers. We waited 4 days for a reply and I texted again...still NOTHING from these people. My husband and I have decided to purchase from another dealer. I brought in my car to have autologic check the entire car over (belts, hoses, tires, fluid levels, etc...) for any problems. I knew my brakes needed to be changed and that's what autologic found. They replaced my brakes and now my brakes work very well and are very quiet. I will definitely use them again as they are very honest and don't try to "upsell" you anything you don't need. The mechanic, Gene, will explain everything to you in detail so that you actually understand what is wrong with your car, explain your options, and prioritize what problems need to be fixed now, and what problems are coming in the future. While it still cost me a lot to get my car tuned up (probably because it's a 13 year old Camry that didn't get the best of maintenance/tuneups and had some major issues) I have a feeling the prices are pretty fair. I had good service all around - from the ladies up front who asked me all the details of my car problems, to the various mechanics. They're a business that have earned my trust - I definitely recommend them! read more

HAPPY UPDATE: Transforming a customer's disappointment into satisfaction is an art. It takes much skill to assess how to appease a patron and patience to create and deliver a resolution. Bo and Marianne (spelling?) did just that. I AM NOW A SMILING CUSTOMER! After I wrote the post above, they both called me within the week and offered to take another look at my car without any additional cost (whoo!). They did refund me a chunk of what I had paid. They even went above and beyond to help. I have been out of town for many months and had left my vehicle with a friend to store for the interim. Bo (and perhaps others--I had only spoken to Bo over the phone but I am sure credit is due to many more) coordinated the logistics of picking up my car from my amiga. They fixed it, called to update me, tested it to make sure it worked, and then drove it back to my pal's residence. This took zero effort on my part. All I did was pick up the phone when they called--they made the process as easy as bakeless pie. About a week ago, I finally had the car shipped to where I am residing. It drives great--smooth like when you spread some creamy peanut butter on crisp Melba toast. Yes, that smooth. Thus far, the car has not stalled--although it was a problem that appeared only in the winter. I guess I will find out when the weather turns cold. I am confident though that all is good. I don't usually leave Yelp reviews, but these guys are really good. Earlier this week, I had a tire blowout at about 5:00, and they were the only place in the area that was still open when the tow truck arrived. They even stuck around a little after closing to get the keys and give me a price in the morning. I have an American car, and they were willing to help even though they primarily work on Asian and European imports since it was an emergency situation. They gave me what I thought was a very reasonable price on some new tires and a tire rotation on very short notice, and I'm very happy with their work. Highly recommended! read more

Fantastic, friendly service from trustworthy technicians. There are some places in life where you just don't want to skimp, and your car is one of them (especially if you want it to last as long as possible, like my 19+ year-old Volvo that still runs beautifully). Sure, you might be able to save 10 or 20 bucks here and there at another mechanic, but it's not worth the hundreds you could potentially lose through careless work. Auto Logic may be a little more expensive than some other options around here, but it's more than reasonable in terms of value. I've experienced nothing but quick diagnoses and excellent work. I've been taking our cars there for quite a few years. I buy used cars off of Craig's List for the whole family and take them to Auto Logic to check out before I buy. Well worth it since they told me not to buy some of the cars. I often get oil changes elsewhere just because I don't want to schedule it and deal with the hassle of getting it there. We've been using AutoLogic for years now, and we've always been very happy with their service, but the thing that has prompted me writing this review is not a visit to AutoLogic, but their advice over the phone when my husband had a breakdown out of state. He called my son because he suspected the price he had been quoted was high, and my son called AutoLogic. They took the time to price out the job even though the car was 300 miles away and they knew they wouldn't get the business this time. And, as it turned out, the out of state garage (AAA Carolinas in Charleston) was ripping us off royally - they were charging double! Was able to find a different garage in Charleston that must be the twin of AutoLogic (Autometrics) who did the job for the price AutoLogic had quoted. AutoLogic really cares about their customers and are completely trustworthy. Very lucky to have them close by! read more

Auto Logic is full of compassionate and considerate people, and really good mechanics to boot. After moving to the area for graduate school, I was wary about finding a new mechanic that I could trust. However, Auto Logic has exceeded my expectations at every turn. They are always willing to find time to squeeze their customers in, and never complain about doing it. They are also incredibly transparent when it comes to major repairs regarding what is necessary, and what can wait - which is great while on a budget. They've been willing to go the extra mile for me to work with nearby part shops to check and see if parts are under warranty such that I could get them for free. Even going so far as to talk to my old mechanic back in Kentucky to straighten out the issues that I was having. Most importantly, they truly take the time to build relationships with their customers, and I feel very comfortable while I'm there - which is invaluable when dealing with the stresses of car repair. I'm really disappointed with my experience here. After noticing a valve issue with my Nissan, I spoke with two different employees of Autologic to try and get a quote. When speaking with their 'Nissan expert' he informed me that the only way to get a quote from them was to get a $100 troubleshooting session. I appreciate their 'thoroughness' but what I don't appreciate is how the most common problem in a high mileage Nissan KA24 engine is a worn timing chain, and this didn't seem to come to mind when I was describing the valve issue (which is a symptom of a worn timing chain). For reference on how prevalent this issue is, it is literally listed on the wikipedia page for the 90's nissan pickup truck. All in all, I ended up with a $100 price tag for a diagnosis that Wikipedia can give you for free. Replacing the timing chain was quoted at $1900, which is about the blue book value of my car, so I'm obviously not going to be doing business here. I understand that this place is trying to make it just like every other business, but you won't get any nice gestures or advice from these guys unless you want to fork over $100. That doesn't sound like the 'honest' garage that they try to sell themselves as. read more

Since moving to Carrboro, I only bring my car here. They don't pretend to be the least expensive shop in town (and told me as much), but all my repairs have been reasonable. They're thorough, take the time to explain car stuff to you, and don't fix things that don't need fixing. They also go above and beyond - after my car wouldn't start, Auto Logic replaced my starter. When it happened again, not only did they have a technician drive out to me 5 minutes before closing and check out my car for FREE, they charged me nothing when I brought it back into the shop. I'd be hard pressed to believe that you won't either come out even or save money in the long run by bringing your car to these guys, and you can't beat the customer service. read more

These people are insane...I took my truck in to get 4 brake pads and 2 new rotors and bleed the brake lines and they tell me it's gonna be $967.34... I said try again and they immediately came down to $657.00...I said put my truck back together and I'll pick it up and take it elsewhere. I took it to my normal mechanic and he did that work plus turn the front rotors and fix a bad taillight bar and do an alignment and rotate the tires for $600...I highly recommend to not take your vehicle to this place! read more

For many years I have been going to a "name brand" auto service center tied to my emergency road service. But after some price hiking, hard sales on questionable service, sloppy customer relations and what proved to be duplicitous practices, I jumped on Yelp and started looking for an alternative. I had a 14 year old car with an engine service light that was going on and off, and I was about to relocate -- and drive -- from Durham/Chapel Hill to the San Francisco Bay area for a new job. My biggest concern was breaking down on some unpopulated desert highway. I came across Auto Logic which appeared to have really good reviews and testimonials on Yelp that spoke to their honesty, integrity, level of service and some other perks that appealed to me. I ultimately ended up having three appointments to address different issues plaguing the vehicle. Co-owner Mary Ann Jones, whom you'll often find at the front desk in their modest but very comfortable facility (wi-fi, coffee/tea and nice seating), runs the shop like it's her family. She is attentive to customer needs and concerns, offered to shuttle me to Durham given some competing work demands, and offered fair pricing for the work that needed to be done. Her "first officer" at the front desk is Bo, an easy going guy with a great sense of humor who handles much of the front desk traffic and keeps everything on time and on point. Then there was James, a shuttle driver and ordered-parts-obtainer for Auto Logic (who likely assists in any number of other ways), who proved to be a really interesting conversationalist during my ride back to the shop. He asked earnest questions about my plans to move to California, and helped make an otherwise stressful time more relaxed. Throughout my visits, I most appreciated my interaction with Ryan. I drive a Mitsubishi, and Ryan, who I understand is the head mechanic for AutoLogic, is an expert with this make of car. I felt greatly fortunate that I had someone who really knew what to look for and how to advise me on service that was mandatory vs. service that could wait awhile or that likely exceeded the value of the car. Ryan is genuine, honest, patient, and very good at explaining details to someone who isn't an automotive expert. He's also humble, easy-going, and the kind of guy you'd probably want to have a beer with. I called Auto Logic recently from my new home in California just to get some direction about another possible repair. Mary Ann asked Ryan to give me a call, and within 20 minutes, we had connected...weeks after I had visited their shop. First and foremost I just wanted to thank them for safely getting me to California, but Ryan took the time to help me identify some possible causes for a particular sound I was hearing and gave some good direction in terms of finding a good auto service center here in CA. Given my experience with Auto Logic, I'm not sure I'll ever find one as superb as this team. Ryan, Mary Ann, James and Bo....and to all the mechanics behind the scenes who worked on my car and make others' experiences with Auto Logic a pleasant one: many thanks for all you did and for being the honest, deliberate and thoughtful people you are. read more

The fact that a place like this even exists on this planet blows my mind. These people are outrageously nice almost to the point of you feeling like you maybe need to sit down and explain to them that they have a responsibility to charge you for the work that they do because that's how the world works, etc. especially when they spend 45 minutes fixing your car, calling around town for parts, calling even more places, printing out pictures of the part for you to buy once you get back to New York with your band that you're touring with cause nowhere in a 50-mile radius has the part, apologizing for the fact that no one has the special part, buying you a bottle of root beer from the old pop machine in the waiting area, but more than anything, being a total friendly human! I don't know the guy's name who was helping me but he puts every New York auto shop to shame. So kind and helpful you'd almost start to get suspicious why anyone would be this kind. I wish I lived in North Carolina and my car broke down every day so I could keep coming to this place. Next time I'm touring through, I'll be sure to go over a bunch of big bumps or something and try to get more things to fall apart on my car so that I can come back. read more

Update: I was contacted by Andrew the owner, and he did agree that they overcharged by 30 minutes, the front end inspection should have covered under the alignment, a refund has been issued. We did have an in-depth conversation about the repair, we didn't agree on everything, but he was professional and obviously cares greatly about his business and reputation. I have bumped up my rating to 3 out of 5 stars but I still feel this repair should have cost less. read more

Coming from out of town I was looking for a car shop that I could trust. Everyone I spoke with (Garth, Bo, and Marianne) was as friendly as could be and made me feel confident in the service I was receiving. They helped me out with a rotor issue and fixed up my car by the end of the day for far less than the dealership had quoted me. I seriously cannot express my gratitude for this shop. I have had a lot of issues with my car (not the same issue over and over but separate issues)in the past year and have always come here. I never feel like they are pulling me in the wrong direction and advising me on what Is best for them. I have never felt more comfortable and confident with a mechanic before and my own father is a mechanic! I moved out here a year and a half ago from California and found these guys here on yelp and I have never once been let down. They drop me off at home when I take my car in and pick me up as soon as it is done. The last time I had an oil change I was in a time crunch and they got me finished up so quickly and even did some extras for me like patching my tire that I didn't know was going flat! Today I was concerned about needing another oil change so I gave them a call and Maryanne explained what my specific car needed to have done why and where and also reminded me to be checking my oil regularly so that I feel more confident. This place always makes me feel like I'm part of the family and that I'm getting a family discount. It's an amazing feeling when you leave the shop with a smile on your face knowing this business isn't trying to take advantage of a naïve young woman, but they genuinely care about me and my well being. Took my Volkswagon there with a obvious automatic transmission problem because they listed "transmissions" in their Yellow Pages listing. They confirmed that I did indeed have a transmission problem and referred me to Jake's Transmissions in Durham. They charged me ninety dollars to tell me what I already knew and had stated to them. I understand (based on word-of-mouth) that they do good work, but I feel like they wasted my time and money and I'll never take my business there again. read more

I no longer live in Chapel Hill, and I really miss these guys. I fully trust their work and diagnoses. My old Toyota had an acceleration problem that other mechanics couldn't diagnosis. These guys were great, they made me feel comfortable, like I wasn't going to get sold anything I didn't need, assured me they would call if ran into anything that would been over the estimate I was given. Simple A/C recharge was all that was needed that I suppose I technically could have done myself, but these guys were a pleasure to work with and much more convenient than any DIY, plus I have peace of mind it didn't need an additional repair that would've made the recharge a waste anyway. They are right off the bus line, so nice and convenient, and easy to find. You can go to the coffee shop nearby and get some work done while you wait. There were other customers in the shop at the same time as me and they were either spoken to by name, or echoed my sentiment of this just feeling like a good trustworthy place to take your car, and my service didn't disappoint, courteous personable and prompt! read more

Found this establishment through car talk in NPR. After reading the review, I decided to take my car for oil change. And I am very satisfied with the service. I also had a check-up and a subsequent oil change after that. They provide good services. (I've been to another recommended garage in the area but the service was okie... I didn't find they were very friendly there). This place reminds me of my other mechanic Kaloci & Son who is so honest and friendly. Although it's a little more expensive than others (but I didn't think it was much much more), it's totally worth the price. You don't have to worry about whether the leaking oil or unnecessary repair. I even talked to one of the customers while I was waiting there and he said he had been coming here for 15 years and trusted these technicians. I would recommend this place if you would like to have reliable people working on your car. They are flexible with the scheduling as well. Just call to make an appointment. Because they are busy, sometimes walk-in might not be the best way. read more

I didn't actually end up having any work done by Auto Logic: I decided to scrap my car, instead. But I want to let everyone know how clear and communicative I found them to be; all along my decision-making process, the office and mechanics at Auto Logic spoke to me clearly and honestly and when I reversed my decision to fix my car, they immediately and with no hassle canceled the transmission I had ordered and offered me advice on the best salvage deal in town and/or places I can donate my car. This is not only one of the most efficient and professional auto shops I've ever seen, but also one of the friendliest. I went recently for a tire repair after a big hex key blew a hole in one of my tires. I got out of work right before they closed, and went to pick up the tire. They mentioned that I could come back and they would torque the tire for free to the proper torque values, but they went out of their way and offered to mount the tire and torque it for free, even though it was past closing time. I recently had to get one of my hubcaps replaced on my Toyota. This was, ugh, a very overdue chore. I had heard really good things about Auto Logic, so I just popped in one day to see about a cap and the gentleman who helped me was super friendly. He took off one of my other caps to find a special number, called it in and got me a ridiculously expensive quote from Toyota very quickly. He referred my to Hubcap Annie's in Raleigh just to see if they had a match and to do a price comparison. I thought this was nice and helpful. We bantered about how totally crappy the hubcaps seemed, how, since I lost mine, I've seen about a gazillion other Toyota's missing one or more hubcaps and he said something like, yes, well, that is because they are crappy. They fall off, then you have to pay almost $100 for a replacement. Unfortunately, Hubcap Annie's did not have a match for me, but the man on the phone did offer me a mismatched set for super cheap. Um, no thanks, sir. I'd rather go sans a cap then have them mismatched, I think. Anyhow, I put in an order at Auto Logic and a couple of days later I went in and purchased my overpriced cap. The friendly employee (wish I could remember his name) and I joked that it was really the fancy bag that the hubcap came in that I paid for-- oy, what a scam! They understand how car owners think and have helped me and my family members make wise decisions based on the age of our cars and the likely problems that lie ahead. No question is stupid- they spend all the time necessary for you to understand the issues your car faces. I am so pleased with my first visit here. My drivers side window got stuck partway down and of course the weather has been rainy. These folks got me in right away and made the repair. Great service, friendly staff, fair price. The shop was clean and organized. When I couldn't bring my car in immediately because I needed to have it they offered to put plastic on the window for me as a temporary solution and they also offered to let me keep it in their garage over night to avoid any rain issues. I would go back without hesitation and I am happy to recommend this place without reservation. So nice to have a quality local mechanic I can trust! read more

Polite staff, but mediocre work (at least in my case). My door handle was broken during service, though they did eventually agree to replace it for free. The larger issue was that I requested that they check my brakes; they said they were fine, but this was not the case. Shortly after, I had to spend hundreds of extra dollars because the brake pads were completely gone. Despite the pleasant interaction, I will not be back. read more
