tl;dr - they might be friendly and do a good job with smog checks, but I dunno about anything beyond that. The long version: I got me a check engine light. They read the code, told me which part it was, and quoted me the part price (but not incl. labor). When I mentioned that I'd noticed another, I-thought-unrelated issue with the car burning a lot of oil, they immediately said that low oil could actually be tripping the sensor. Checked my oil level, which was low, topped it off, and told me to see if that solved the problem -- $3 for the oil instead of replacing the part, so I was happy at that point. BUT, the light came back on, so I brought it back. This time, things went a bit downhill. I dropped the car before work, leaving instructions for them to call me with an estimate, but it was lunchtime by the time I realized I hadn't heard back. So, I called them. They said they were waiting on the part which wouldn't arrive until late, so it wouldn't be ready that day. Okay. I arranged for other transportation. Then, a few hours later, they called me to say the work was done. Um. Two issues with this: 1) I never got/approved an estimate, and 2) It was 15 minutes before they closed, so I was car-less for another day anyway. The next day I showed up to pick up the car... the price for the part was higher than they'd quoted on my initial visit -- $100+ instead of $80 -- and they told me they were "only" charging me for 1.5 hrs labor. Which is funny, because they labor clearly didn't take them that long, what with waiting for the part and still managing to do the work (without me approving it) in less than half a day. In between smog checks, which seem to be their bread and butter. Funnest part -- the light came back on almost immediately after I left. Brought it back to them, and they said not to worry, that they'd take care of it. Then called me with a list of like three things they wanted to try, one by one, with me paying each step of the way, of course. I decided to drive around with the check engine light on. Massis and Paul are the only two names you need to remember at Auto Technica. They are the best! I had taken my Acura to a different repair shop and some dash light came "on" and the repair shop didn't have the necessary computer to diagnose the problem - so the shop recommended I take my car to Massis. What the hell were they thinking because Massis did such a fantastic job that i have taken all my cars to him ever since. He is like a friend to me. They are beyond fair and competent. They surpass my expectations every time. I have been taking my auto's to Massis since 2009 and will continue. Their prices are so fair that i try to give them as much business as possible. Just called for replacing break pads. I asked if they could replace the break pads. The guy over the phone barked 'why not rotors?'. I kept my cool and said ' because they are in a good condition'. I requested for genuine parts. He proceeds to say ' I'm very busy to order those, I'll just give you a quote ( and not disclose what parts they are using)'. At this point I'm quite irritated at his rudeness. I said if he was busy I would take my business elsewhere. He chuckles and says 'that's a very good idea! You should do that'. Ok, it wasn't a total 5 star experience, but I can't penalize them for the State of California's delays. I brought in my car to fix the emissions. Massis was very professional to deal with. Quickly identified the issue, gave me an estimate, faxed me approval forms and all. But it was a Friday and the State of California's CAP office had closed for the weekend and couldn't approve the repair. So I waited until Mondyay to pick up my car. I used yelp to find a good independent auto shop in Sunnyvale and this one came up. I was initially skeptical about the extremely positive rankings. But after visiting them for a BMW repair, I completely agree with the other positive reviewers. Not only they fixed the car but also showed me some small repairs that I could do myself. In the first visit, they did not charge me because it was a trivial repair (from their perspective). Their rates is very reasonable. They have posted an hourly rate that is much cheaper than a dealer. Last time I was at the dealer, right after the 4 years BMW warranty expired, they charged me for a number of very expensive repairs. I suspect that some of them could have been identified in the previous visit during the warranty. To be fair to the dealer, I am just speculating this. Flash forward to Auto Technica. They quickly identified a small oil leak that I did not fix at the dealer, and explained to me that it is an optional repair and I can do it part of perhaps another visit. They do have the electronic equipment to diagnose and read the sensors of modern cars. Anyway, I just like the way they explain things and take time to discuss issues, and include you in the repair process. Kudos to them; and let us support a good local business. read more

A couple years ago the blinker on my car was out, but I didn't have the proper tool to change the light bulb. I stopped here and told them my plight. The dude stopped what he was doing, came out with the tool and switched the light-bulb out for me and sent me on my way without charging me anything. That little gesture and his friendly attitude were enough to gain my future business and my trust. They haven't let me down yet! read more

These guys are great! Friendly, great service--I have several different cars both domestic and foreign, they've been able to fix everything--always done on time and for the estimated price. Once, it was unclear what was wrong, they cleared the error code and instructed me to wait (there was a possibility that an altitude change caused the issue); when I asked how much, they said "a hand shake" and offered their apologies for my loss--my Father had just passed away and I was having his car serviced after driving it here from Arizona. For basic stuff like brakes and coolant flushing, you can't beat these guys on price and quality. However, I have to take one star off the rating for a transmission replacement. Got charged $3K+ which is pretty on-par with a dealer service department, and it took more than a week to complete. I had to get a rental car in the meantime. After it was finished, my ASC lamp kept turning on every few minutes indicating some alignment issues, and the gear shift was rough (lots of stuttering). I'm not going to take another star off yet since I never went back to Auto Technica to complain. I ended-up trading-in the car for a new one for about the cost of the transmission. read more

All the workers were extremely helpful in getting my smog done quickly and easily. There is one guy who works there who is an older gentleman who I told about my fans not kicking in and causing overheating issues. I only told him this casually but he ended up looking up the schematics for the fans and showing me which switch probably is the problem. Had issues with a 2000 Saturn and the monitors not resetting. They ran the checks and got 2 of the monitors to set. and then explained the law about 2000 and older vehicles. Stay away!!!!! Visited this shop a few months back and had a bearing changed. On the bill it said the right bearing had been changed. About a month later the noise comes back and I go diagnose the problem at another garage. The garage tells me the right bearing needs changing. Since the parts are under warranty I go back to Autotechnica and let them know the situation. Instead of driving the car and making sure what the problem was they automatically got defensive and started telling me they actually changed the left one. That's weird? So I leave the car there and they call me and tell me the right bearing needs fixing. So I'm trying to tell them that the part is under warranty so it's an easy fix to get the manufacturer to give you a new one. BUT NO! They persist on telling me I have to pay and that the left one needs changing now. WTF? So they charge me the part and apparently fix the right one. So now four months later both front bearings are now broken AGAIN! Since I had such bad service at Autotechnica I could not see myself going back there and arguing again. Stay away! read more

This is a legit place, operated by very professional, competent and friendly people, and they've earned my respect ! I've been using their services for many years on different cars, be it mine, or my relatives and friends. Great and trustworthy mechanics. They tell you straight up what's wrong (if anything) with the car, no BS no shady pushes at unnecessary services. I have all my maintenance (breaks, engine, oil changes...) done there. Fast service, I never waited more than 5 minutes to be greeted and helped. My mini van lately had a problem - the interior lights stay on even though I shut all doors. I searched over the internet and got minimal info for solutions. Mostly recommendations were to check all door switches and circuit. I tried my best and couldn't figure it out and decided to get expert opinion. Found Auto Technica from Yelp, mainly for its good rating and had electrical expertise. Over the phone, Paul said it could be complicated and need to run a diagnostics ($120), but I can bring it to the shop take a quick look. I agreed. Once I was there, Paul told Steve to drop off what he was doing and take a look on my car first. It didn't take Steve more than a minute to figure out the problem. It was the lighting intention roller switch. I didn't know if it turned all the way to the brightest level, it would click into a stays on position. Damn it! I had the car for more than 16 years and didn't know. Auto Technica didn't charge me anything for that valuable advice. Thanks Paul and Steve, great and honest man. read more

Terrible. Massis is a crock and Paul is a moran and a bully. Changed things that didn't need to be changed. Broke two things in the car after having it for only one day. Wanted me to sign a blank invoice and when I pushed him to tell me what he was going to charge. He said first he will start with a diagnosis fee of $225. Awful experience. I had my car checked at Auto for problems with ignition. I paid for it. picked up the car, after 100 miles the same issue happened again. I called to speak to the mechanic. Very knowledgeable and reasonable smog-related service. Massis did a quick evaluation that he didn't even charge me for -- he found a problem before even hooking up the smog monitor. (Before the eval, we had agreed on a nominal investigation fee -- he waived it.) He went over several options, including projected costs. Had mixed experiences with this shop. On first occassion, I was impressed with the quick and inexpensive service. Second time was a rip-off and most frustating thing was that they could not get my car smog-tested. He kept insisting that there is something wrong with the car and go for a test run for 100 or 200 miles and try again. However, I decided to take second opinion and realized that it was a problem with his service as the part was installed incorrectly by him. Had to convince him by having him talk directly to my other mechanic from Quality Tune Up' who was very knowledgable. Finally, after correcting the installation, the car passed smog test easily and had no issues. I will stay away from this business. read more
