Minh and Alex were amazing. I came in to get my car checked out and I saw how they handled one customer. The customer had a leak and Minh was able to diagnose the problem and explain everything to the car owner. He gave tips and top off the car owners fluids at no charge. The car owner was insistent of paying for the top off but Minh said it was no problem and just come back if the guy's mechanic can't fix it or recommend him to his friends. I wrote my first review for A-1 back in 2014, after having been a customer for several years already. Now, a decade later, we're still taking all our cars here for their routine service. The owner, Cliff, now spends most of his time at the sister European car repair shop in San Jose, but his nephew Minh has taken the reins of this Sunnyvale location and the service continues to be top notch. They've kept our 11-year old, 15-year-old, and 25-year-old(!!) cars running smoothly. In addition to offering high quality and reliable service at reasonable prices, Minh is also very straightforward and honest about whether he thinks a particular repair is necessary, especially for our older cars. If he believes that the cost is unreasonable - for example, a $3000 repair for our 25-year-old car - he'll let you know and work with you to find the most logical solution. The turnaround time for repairs is also really fast. On many occasions I've called to schedule service, and virtually every time Minh tells me to just bring the car in. I've even dropped in unannounced and he is always willing to take the car and provide a diagnosis and cost estimate within a few hours, with most repairs finished within a day. We're very happy with A-1 and will certainly continue to take our cars here. Maybe I'll write an updated review in 2034 as well. read more

I have had excellent service at A-1 and always feel that I'm in good hands with Minh. Minh is knowledgeable and honest and has helped me numerous times. Most recently, the engine on my car completely died on the highway (with no warning.) Minh mentioned that he believed it was a manufacturer defect which he's seen many times, and encouraged me to try to get the dealer to replace the engine even though I was past warranty (car is 12 years old with 104k miles.) Shockingly, the dealer replaced the engine at no cost and gave me a loaner, as the engine defect was covered under a class action settlement. Minh also gave me advice on which additional items I should have the dealer perform (per findings from their "free multipoint inspection") and which items I did not need or that would be cheaper for him to do for me. He also suggested that I negotiate with the dealer to reduce the price of the additional work to parts only since I shouldn't have to pay for labor since they were already replacing the engine... and it worked! This is not the first time that Minh has given me invaluable advice and helped me to save money... he could've easily made more money off of me in these situations because I wouldn't know any better. I'm so thank for Minh and his team - I highly recommend this ethical business! read more

This place is a fraud. I bought my car here for a brake service thinking that we came from the same country (Vietnam) therefore Minh (the manager) would be honest and take care of my car as normal Auto repair places should. He lied to me when he told me I have to replace the whole brake system because my car, Lexus GS350 is a sport car so it cannot be replaced just the brake pads like regular cars, and so I went ahead and replace the brake system for over $800. A couple weeks ago, I brought my car to Lexus Dealer for my brake checkup and asked if it is true that I have to change the whole brake system because my car is a sport type (Lexus GS350). they confirmed that: "When replacing brakes generally only need brake pads and shims or brake pads, shims, and rotors. All depending on thickness of rotors if they can be resurfaced or not". I would never come back to this place again and Would NOT recommend this place to anyone out there. read more

I have been going to A-1 for years work for all the work on my 2011 Hyndai Sonata. They are always helpful and do a great job of diagnosing and solving any issues in a timely manner. I recently perched a used a used 2002 F150 and the check engine light started coming on. Mhin was super helpful, he walked me through the process of what the error was and how they needed to diagnose the problem. They discovered a few issues and were able to solve them. Mhin went out of his way to communicate everything that they were doing and it made me feel confident in their knowledge and work. Finally found a great mechanic. Minh is a true professional. He's honest, straightforward, and a good person. I went to two mechanics prior to finding Minh regarding a big repair on my Ford Explorer ST and I felt completely uncomfortable with them. I felt like they were intimidated by my vehicle. I took my car to Minh and he immediately recognized the problem and provided me with options. He even went as far as to tell me to take my vehicle to the dealer to see if it was still under warranty or if there was a recall, something I never thought a mechanic would suggest. I was a customer here from 2016 to 2020 after the shop got recommended to me by a friend. I wish I had done my own research. A-1 Performance replaced my alternator because I had a battery that went bad quickly. Soon afterwards I started having issues with my power steering. My car lost power steering every now and then. I went back to A-1 Performance and they told me that it is not something they can help with and that I need to go to the Ford dealer. The Ford dealer had troubles diagnosing the issue. Over the course of two years, they placed several new batteries and a new power steering unit before they found out that the issue is that the alternator was working but is not powerful enough to power the car when all utilities like A/C are switched on. This caused the battery to go bad over the course of a couple months, which caused the power steering to start failing. A-1 Performance appeared to have replaced my alternator with one that is not powerful enough for the car and it has caused a lot of trouble and money over the past two years. This is not the only thing. My wife was a customer here too, with her Nissan. She later went to the Nissan dealership for some repair and the Nissan dealer literally told us that there are screws in the car that are not of the right type and that there was an oil leak that was not actually fixed but there was some sort of glue that tried to seal it. My recommendation to everyone is to think twice before you go here and maybe consider the dealership who will charge only a little bit more but they actually know what they are doing. read more

I've been going back and forth on if I should leave my feedback about this company and feel I should leave my experience. I was asking for a quote to do an engine swap (VERY BASIC) and they basically said I had to bring it in for an inspection! To be clear I've done an engine swap several times before, I'm just pressed on time and space otherwise I would do it myself. I've got quote from other shops and NEVER received an insane response like this from any shop EVER. Future customers, BUYER BEWARE, I get red flags with this guys response. You always want to get a general idea of the cost to do a job, of course things can change and increase a little bit, but never I can't quote a job without inspecting, unless your a con and trying to make up work that doesn't need to be done. We had a groupon for a standard 5 qt oil change and got no attitude from them regarding the groupon (some places have issues with groupon-I dont know why they advertise with them then). We called before going in and were told it would take about 45 mins but were done within a half hour so impressed and happy. Price is very reasonable on its own even without the added discount. I brought my Hyundai Kona to A-1 because I get slapping noises at certain speeds (i.e. prevailing speed on I-280 through the hills which is about 75). The noise does not happen at lower speeds. My husband suggested I was having strut problems which are not unusual on the model I drive. Minh went for a test drive with me and determined that at that speed, gravel from the tires on the road hit a certain part of the bottom of the car; it doesn't hit the car at lower speeds. very good diagnosis. He could charged to me to fix something that wasn't broken but that is not his business. read more

I pretty much hate having to get my car fixed (I don't think any one likes it) but needed to get my A/C repaired before an upcoming road trip to Zion national park (the desert you guys, the desert) and decided it was high time I get it fixed. Initially I had taken it to Pep Boys for an A/C evaluation and after a two hour wait they seemed to have determined my Condenser had a leak and would need replacing which they had quoted at around ~$600 which seemed expensive and decided to shop around and see if there was another mechanic out there. I used Yelp to message A1 and after our conversation felt that they would be able to help me out. I was quoted much less than at Pep Boys and based on the reviews and interaction with their team felt confident that this would be a good fit. I dropped off my car around 9:30 and around noon I got a call with not the greatest news. They asked me if I was sure Pep Boys said it was the condenser because they had determined it wasn't the condenser at all but instead the Evaporator Core that had the leak (they texted me pictures and everything! -- amazing customer service!). They quoted me a new price ($850) to get that replaced instead which stung because it was a lot more than I was planning on spending, but it was such a relief that they were honest enough to Catch Pep Boys misdiagnosis and let me know right away with a photograph and everything, when they could have just as easily replaced the condenser and ignored the actual problem. If that doesn't make these guys a trustworthy auto shop I don't know what does. I will definitely be back in the future for anything else my car needs. I returned last week to A-1 for my 90K factory service and to check on some oil leaks that a local dealership reported finding recently. The dealership stated the oil leak repairs would cost me thousands$$$$ of dollars to repair, beyond the current Blue Book value of my car. After the A-1 crew inspected my vehicle, they successfully repaired all of the oil leaks as well as completed my necessary 90K service needs FOR AROUND 1/4 OF THE COST THAT THE DEALERSHIP QUOTED ME! Once again I'm very satisfied that I returned A-1 Performance Auto for their honest quality service & also happy that their business successfully survived through the COVID19 outbreak when several others did not. I went to this shop for 100k maintenance with a quote of $600-$800 in September 2023. I had another quote in another shop for about $1500 in total for 100k maintenance so I thought the $600-$800 was good enough. I briefly knew timing belt needed to be changed on 100k maintenance but Minh told me my car(2015 Chevy Sonic) doesn't use timing belt so there was no need to change. It ended up with $1000+ for the 100k maintenance because an extra part in the engine needed to be replaced. But my car's dashboard showed the sign of "52" which leads to changing the timing belt in User's Manual yesterday. I called Minh again yesterday. He denied about the timing belt change on my car as he previously stated. After I explained about the code and he looked it up, he quoted me for another $1200(which totals the 100k maintenance to $2000+ which is 25% higher than my quote in another store earlier this year). Also he lied that I didn't ask for timing belt when I quoted for 100k maintenance last time. Also he mentioned he helped me cut the rubber in front of my car for free the first time I visited to hint that he did me a favor before. Also he's not the owner of the shop(which is similar to another review here he lied he was just an employee) so he can't give me a discount to compensate for the extra cost I spent last time. He eventually gave a $510 quote for "belt only" which is obviously not recommended on Google. I am not happy about no transparency and obvious lies about my car(no timing belt changes needed). Even if their price is 25% or more higher than other stores, it's totally ok with me as long as the procedures are transparent. read more
