Looking for a place for a nice sweet treat and heard about Automne's Cardamom buns, Having lived in Northern Europe for many years, I do enjoy my cardamom sweet treats so decided to check it out. Besides a nice in-house baked bread selection, Automne offers wonderful mouth-watering sweet pastries and savory baked items. So hard to chose! Along with my Noeud à La Cardamome (a.k.a. Cardamom roll topped with pearl sugar), I ordered a Roulé Fraise Rhubarb (a.k.a. Strawberry Rhubarb Danish) and a Matcha Oat Latte. Able to relax outdoors in their section with cafe tables. One little surprise, the Danish's drizzle was not caramel but peanut butter flavored. Typically not a fan of peanut butter, but the drizzle was small enough not to distract from the rest of the yummy pastry. All was fantastic! Automne Boulangerie is a small, intimate bakery with a cozy neighborhood feel--often mentioned as having some of the best croissants in Montreal. We visited on a Sunday around 3 p.m., and unfortunately, the croissants and tarts were already sold out. The only items left were a few cookies and a chocolatine (pain au chocolat), so I ordered the chocolatine for $3.75 CAD. The bakery itself is very compact. Inside, there aren't tables for sitting, just a small counter to stand at, but there are a few outdoor tables right by the door. The staff were friendly and helpful in explaining the items available. They also mentioned that weekends usually bring more variety, including fruit tarts, while weekdays focus mainly on croissants. The chocolatine I tried was good--crispy on the outside, soft and tender inside, exactly what you'd expect from a quality bakery. I wouldn't say it was the best I've ever had, but it was still enjoyable. If you're in the neighborhood, Automne Boulangerie is worth a visit, especially earlier in the day or on a weekend to get the full range of their croissants and tarts. read more

While on a walking tour, someone recommended this spot for their croissants. After seeing their good Google reviews, we decided to stop by. We arrived closer to the afternoon, around 1 pm, so many items were already sold out, but we were still able to get a plain croissant and a chocolate croissant. Both were fresh and enjoyable, though not quite as crisp as they might be in the morning. The shop doesn't have a clear sign on the top but on the window, so I snapped a picture to help fellow tourists find it. Service was quick, and they do accept credit cards. Stopped in late in the afternoon, so the majority of goods were sold out. However, I did get a chance to snag some croissants, brownies and a brioche. Me and a friend came here on Saturday around noon. This places smells incredible when you walk in and you can tell all the locals were coming in for bread or pastries to take home. Because it was later in the day the quiche was gone so we got chocolate croissants and teas. The croissants were amazing. The only downside is it was pretty cold and there was no indoor seating so be prepared to sit outside or need to leave. The indoor area is just one huge line which is nice because it makes the service very quick and comfortable. read more

2.5 stars As excited as we were to try this reputable bakery, we were left disappointed by the lack of freshness in everything we tasted: Lemon danish, ginger cookie, chocolate cookie and peanut butter chocolate croissant. As for the bread, if you wear dentures or want to break a tooth, eat it as is. I never had such a hard bread in my life. In all honesty, there itoo much hype for such a hard bite. Maybe this is the best bakery in the area but definitely not the best in my books. Service is mediocre and staff shouldn't mix everything in the same bag. This was my favorite place in Montreal! One of my biggest regret was not stopping by here again before we left to get more goodness! We came here and got a few regular croissants and one with ham and cheese. Omg! It was sooo good! So flaky and crispy on the outside yet the inside was chewy with a nice texture. The one with the ham and cheese was incredibly delicious! I cannot find anything to complaint about! We also got a loft of bread with the walnuts inside and that was sooo yummy as well. Good just by itself without anything. Imagine it toasted with butter!!! We were staying at an Airbnb and unfortunately didn't not get a chance to toast it but it was delicious and so chewy on its own. Got a bag of the palmiers and it was a hit! Everyone loved them. The decor was cute and cozy! Oh and the coffee was really good too!!! Service was fast and friendly. I was worried about not speaking French and the staff treating me funny but that was NOT the case! This place has just gotten better and better and I love it. The weekday lunch deal is super generous with a huge fresh sandwich, a salad or soup, and a coffee or cold drink for 12$. The bread is outstanding, I love the nut bread it's so crispy and light and amazing. The spicy chocolate danish is one of my favourite things to put in my face. Everything I eat here makes me excited to come back and try something else. The vibe here, though often very busy, manages to remain calm and relaxing and inviting. How could anyone not love a good bakery? When I started hearing so many good things about Automne Boulangerie on Beaubien I knew I needed to make the trip to check it out. The space is pretty big and you can easily see the massive kitchen in the back where they are baking up delicious breads and viennoiseries. On this particular visit I picked up a loaf of standard toast bread and a chocolatine to eat there. The chocolatine was flaky and oozing with melted chocolate and had my better judgement not won out I could have easily eaten a second one right then and there. The bread was very fresh and made for excellent sandwiches when I got it home. The prices were maybe a bit more expensive than what I am used to but the quality of the products is high. Automne is an excellent addition to Montreal's bakery scene and there will definitely be more visits here in the future. read more

Bread is excellent because they use the old, time-consuming way of doit it to great effect. My favorite is the simplest that they call Le Bâtard. Basic pastries such as croissant, chocolatine and ginger snaps are ok, but definitely not their forte. We came here on the recommendation of our server from Toque as she absolutely raved about this bakery - and she was right! This place is located a bit outside of downtown and we definitely would not have come here had it not been her recommendation. The bakery is quiet and the place is extremely well-lit and a cozy place to just get a coffee and read a book :). The breads looked absolutely scrumptious but sadly, there was no way we could bring any back to Toronto. We got both a chocolate croissant and a regular croissant and they were both crispy and so delicious. This place is a must visit! read more

One visit suggests this is a strong addition to Montreal's boulangerie scene. The selection isn't vast, but it includes two pretty serious rye breads -- one 100% rye, the other 67%. I tried the latter and have at least one reason to return. Ace baker Julien Roy, formerly of Le pain dans les voiles, is part of the team. There are a few tables, and they also serve coffee. This is a dream come true. A great bakery just next to my house. This will be great for my carb count and we know that this is what winter is all about. As you wait in line and take in the scent of fresh bread, you see the busy bakers work through the glass wall. They seem happy as making bread is an act of love, especially natural sour doe bread like they use here. Grab anything, the baguette, the cheese baguette, the basic sour doe, the full wheat. The sweets, oh my the sweets that will stare at you with evil temptation while you wait in line. The staff is friendly and patient, they will look away if you had one too many of the sample tasting near the register. They understand matters of the doe and the heart. Delicious, but not a fan. Bakeries is something I love, and always in the search of trying a new one. The moment I was informed about Automne, I went to my carb and butter investigation. To see if my taste buds, eyes, and wallet were going to be pleased. Unfortunately, my overall opinion is that the place was just "OK" Now now, I know many of you love/loved this place. There were a few things that I was disappointed with the moment I walk in. The location it's self is simple, original, beautifully, and very photogenic! Foodie photographers, this is a great place to snap away photos! I went on a Saturday after brunch(Around noon) very few things were left for me to choose from. Disappointing! On a Saturday, I would assume that the variety would be a bit better and bigger. Perhaps not? I purchased three different pastries and a baguette. The baguette was outstanding!!! It took me back to my trip to Paris. As for the pastries, they were "meh" They lacked that punch of flavour, and taste. Some of them were slightly burnt. One interesting thing I noticed is the floor was a bit slippery due to a dusting of flour from their kitchen blowing. A unique touch, but a slippery floor to walk on. Having said all this, I would definitely give it a second chance. I did enjoy their bread a great deal which I think it's their main focus, and strenght. Every neighbourhood needs a good bakery. Walking into a space with that lovely fresh baked goods smell just brings a smile to my face every time. Once you find a good bakery, you never go back to grocery store bread. Heck, I moved neighbourhood last year but still go to Mile End every week because I still love Hof Kelsten's Rye above all else. I still enjoy trying new bakeries however especially when the buzz is strong. Most recently, there were rumblings about a new bakery opening up in Rosemont Petite-Patrie that had quite the reputation behind it. Automne Boulangerie opened up one month with a emphasis on producing baked goods with local agricultural producers. Started by Seth Gabrielse - former chef at SAT Foodlab and Laloux - and Julien Roy - former bakery at Pain dans les Voiles, Automne certainly has the right bloodlines to success at its stated goal. With my girlfriend taking a class in the area, we stopped by recently to see what they had to offer. The space is fairly basic but very bright and cherry. All-white walls with accent use of wood and copper. Behind the counter of tempting viennoiseries and other goods, you can see the baking area with the crew working on around the oven. A couple of viennoiseries to start. My girlfriend went with the Croissant d'Automne. Topped with almonds and powdered sugar and filled with almond paste, this croissant was rich, decadent and flaky. A little denser than your typical croissant by the use of the almond paste but oh so good.... I went with the roulé d'Automne. The roll looks like a upside-down popover covered with caramel and some walnuts. Once you bit into it, the obvious comparison is a cinnamon roll. The texture and taste were very similar. The nice part was the lack of that stickiness which makes it easier to deal with as a take-home. This is a bakery after all so of course I wanted to try one of their breads. I decided to go with their Batard Moulin des Cedres - which as an aside, Moulin des Cedres belongs to the family of a high school classmate of mine. They do great work in biological agriculture and transformation in Les Cedres. Amazing products on top of their flour. Anyway, back to the bread at hand... The bread is wonderful. Simple but so good. Great crunch to the crust but yet soft and chewy inside. A little yeasty in flavour but not overwhelmingly so. Beautiful bread all-around. Wonderful pastries, great bread and an emphasis on local producers. Automne Boulangerie certainly has a great concept to work on. Given I visit that area regularly, Automne will certainly be a regular visit for me. Hopefully the neighbourhood gravitates to it as much as it deserves. Just follow the smell of freshly baked bread. The best bread ever!!! Let me start by saying that I am very very picky and spoiled when it comes to bread due to most of my life spent in Europe. I have had bread in many places around the globe and honestly, Automne has by far the best baguette I've ever tasted. The crust is crunchy and the inside is silky soft, resulting in a piece of bread melting in one's mouth. I love to order a side of jam and sit in the bakery enjoying my warm baguette right there, observing skilled master bakers and hardworking counter staff. It is not only their breads, Automne Boulangerie's pastries are a treat too! You have to try a tarte, my favourite is peaches and almonds, or a croissant. If you are in the neighbourhood during lunch drop by for a delicious pizza, hot from the oven after 11am. And I can go on...but my mouth starts melting just thinking about all the tasty treats Automne bakes every day.
