I unfortunately did not share in the same amazing experience as everyone else. I brought in a new to me 1993 LS400 that was leaking oil from the valve covers, barely failed the 25mph portion of the smog test for hydrocarbons, and I asked about a timing belt job as well as possible spark plugs and wires. I left the car and agreed to the diagnostic fee. No issues there. Darlene called me back and confirmed that the valve covers were indeed leaking, and provided a quote of around $1,000. I asked if it needed a timing belt job or if the tech thought it could also be camshaft/crankshaft seals. She put me on hold and then said "Oh yeah, it needs a timing belt job too." Not sure why she wasn't prepared with that information, but it seemed odd. The quote for that was above $2,500. I then asked about the smog and Darlene told me I had lazy catalytic converters and that they needed to be replaced at almost $3k. All in all, the quote was going to be $6,500+. I don't know if this diagnostic was malicious or simply negligent, but either way it was unacceptable. I picked up the car the next day and took it to another shop. The other shop told me I didn't need new cats, then did the valve cover gaskets, timing belt job, spark plugs & wires for about $1,000 cheaper. They also replaced the PCV valve I provided ($20 part) for free and the car passed smog with flying colors. Sure the cats may have fixed it, but you shouldn't go with the nuclear option first, at the expense of the customer. read more

I was initially told they might not be able to look at my car for a few days because they were busy. They ended up calling me back the same day I brought my car in to tell me they had a chance to look at my car and found that my fuel pump died. I can't recommend Automotive Excellence enough! For the last 3 years I have had issues with my 20 year old Mazda Rx8 starting when it sits for more than a couple of weeks. I have taken it to a different repair shop a few times over the last couple of years for this problem, paid for repairs only to not have the problem resolved. I decided the car needed to go somewhere else. I choose Automotive Excellence because they work on Mazdas. The Mazda Rx8 isn't just any car. They have a rotary engine which was discontinued 13 years ago. Most mechanics have no experience with rotary engines. The team at Automotive Excellence knew the idiosyncrasies of the specific way this car needs to be started. They had my car only a few days, diagnosed the problem and she is now running reliably. And, I felt the cost was quite reasonable. Everyone I have interacted with has been friendly, helpful and professional. I won't take my cars anywhere else. I only wish I had found them sooner. read more

Dave has a great team at Automotive Excellence, starting with Darlene, so efficient, and a great lineup of experienced technicians---a business name well-earned and deserved! :) Just had a Major Service performed, yeah, always costly, (no matter where you go), but it entails so much, even a nice carwash! I know when I drive away, I can trust the job was done correctly. I'm always amazed at the level of service they go to resolve some nagging issues. For instance, my seatbelts were no longer retracting because they are 17 years old and have been well used. I would have a pile of seatbelt sitting to my side when I got out of the driver's side. The passenger side was not much better. The technician cleaned the retractor mechanism and Dave (owner) even tried ironing the belt itself, he heard that helps. Who does that nowadays?? They could have easily sold me the two seatbelts they had priced for me, each at 200. But, instead he offers to iron it. It worked! They are much better, I can live with them like that for a while and eventually buy the replacements. It's not always about the major services, the little things count as well and are very much appreciated (a great example: The two rolls of Smarties candy left with the business card, yes, Dave we do notice...) I already reviewed Automotive Excellence for the great work they do on my 1994 Miata and my wife's 2019 CX5 turbo but yesterday I took my daughter's 2014 Crosstrek in to have a wireless backup camera installed for her while she and her husband were in Scotland. For Christmas we got her an Auto Vox CS2 which does not require a wire to be sent from the camera at the rear to the monitor at the front. He invisibly located the camera at the rear, (not the usual attached to license plate holder location), which is excellent as my daughter always leaves her car outside as the small garage is essentially storage. No advertising the fact she has an aftermarket backup camera is a good thing. Also the reason I had the monitor placed in the cubby in front of the shifter rather than up on the dash. Dave at Automotive Excellence can likely install any add on to your car you wish, but be sure to ask before purchasing an item. read more

Long overdue review of this trustworthy shop. I can not stress enough how much I appreciate everything they've done for me and continue to do, I still come here even now, living in Oakland. I highly recommend putting your trust in them as they continue to blow me away with their honesty, options for fixes, and swiftness with all repairs. They are not like other shops who don't have time, over charge, and over quote. They make a stressful situation easy and have always put me at ease. Last year my catalytic converter was stolen in RP, I called and brought it in immediately. They worked seamlessly with my insurance and had me driving the next day. On another occasion they took me in for what I thought was a transmission issue (I was quoted $5K in Oakland), they saw that it was only a piece of metal wedged that was making the sound that had me so raddled. I had an appointment but was two hours early and took a chance at swinging by, they took the car right in even though they were busy. Dave put the car up, wedged the metal back and didn't even charge me for the fix or time it took. Grateful is an understatement. Drove in and got my brakes checked today and they are going above and beyond as always. Darlene has always been kind and accommodating when making or changing appointments. I have a 1995 Tacoma I have brought to this shop several times with no issues. Unfortunately, I can not say the same for my last visit which led me to no longer use their services. I brought my truck in because my key would only come out of the ignition if the shifter was shifted multiple times and the problem was worsening. I detailed this in the description of my online appointment request. Upon dropping it off for my appointment, they informed me they may need a locksmith who was unavailable until the following week. I was given no notice the issue might not be able to be addressed for several days. I would have chosen to bring my truck in on a later date if I had known this. It caused me some stress I would not have a vehicle for longer than expected. Thankfully they diagnosed the issue and did not need a locksmith. Turned out, the parts I needed were not made by Toyota anymore so the problem would need to be overridden by unplugging a sensor under my steering wheel. I picked up my truck and my key came right out of the ignition once I got home. However, as I went to leave my house again, later that day, my truck would not start and the starter was not engaging. I called Automotive Excellence and they told me the work they did on my truck had nothing to do with this and it was simply a "coincidence". I found this hard to believe since my truck had previously never done this and the mechanic worked on it only hours before. They suggested I get the vehicle towed back to the shop and it was likely my starter. This was extremely distressing to me. I decided to investigate to avoid the steep cost of a tow. After, taking the paneling off from under my steering wheel I found a grounding wire on an aftermarket security system in my truck (installed by the previous owner) had been dislodged from its contact with a metal screw keeping it in place. The wire was hanging right next to the unplugged sensor. This was no coincidence! I spent an entire afternoon stressing over and fixing a problem Automotive Excellence caused. (It should also be noted they leave the cars from the shop, they are not working on, unlocked on the street) read more

Took my Toyota Tacoma to them for some work and they were the absolute best! They took really good care of my truck and drop my kiddo and I off at home as the work would take several hours. Their pricing was more than reasonable. About a month later, the check engine light came on my other car. I called them up and it took it right in. They checked it out with one of their little hand-held sensors and fixed the problem right there. No charge. I will absolutely take both my vehicles there again for any service. Honest, reliable, and not over-priced. We'd taken our Toyota to Hansel for a service, and in the process, they damaged our vehicle, then wanted to charge us $527 to fix it. We got our car out of there and took it to Automotive Excellence. Not only did they say they'd NEVER have charged us for the situation we described, they fixed the issue for us at a total cost of $197. This review is long overdue. I cannot express enough how grateful I am to Dave and Terri for their quick response and excellent service I receive from this business. I first ran across this business through Yelp and after reading their excellent reviews I figured I'd give them a shot. I was nervous because being young and a woman I don't always get the best service or treatment from auto shops. Sad but true. I called in and asked about coming in without an appointment and I was quickly greeted and taken care of. Dave then did a drive through with my vehicle where I pointed out the noise I was concerned with and the staff took care of the work with no issues. Recently, I returned for a major service because my job had asked me to assist at a location which required me to drive four hours to arrive and then four hours back. I explained to Terri via email very late at night that I was interested in a quote and I received it early in the next morning. (Because I emailed them very late at night time) I scheduled my appointment and I was seen the next day. Not only was my major service taken care of but the family even did a bumper to bumper inspection. Dave then called to tell me how things are going with my car. He said "I've told the crew to work on your life as if you were their own daughter." I didn't need the reassurance that my vehicle was in good hands but Dave gave me that and I felt relieved. My car was returned to me that same day and I drove to my destination that same night with no problems and feeling confidently safe in my vehicle. I wouldn't trust anyone else to work on my vehicle because this family offers great quality work and reasonable prices. Asides from that every time I come here they have a great attitude and personality and just that alone makes me want to give them more business. Was helping a family friend take care of an issue with their car and got to a point that was beyond my experience. About 30 years ago I had started to explore the automotive mechanic trade and had a fairly impressive list of certificates behind my name. Who would've thought that the technology and troubleshooting aspects in modern automobiles would've changed? My research into finding a reputable local shop very distinctly brought me to Automotive Excellence. They were responsive to my multiple questions and concerns via the Yelp app messenger and they were not even open that day. After the diagnosis, they went over everything with me, gave me time to contemplate the job and even allowed me to talk directly with the mechanic. The job was fairly expensive, but the price was in line for the cost of the part, and the time it took to do the job. To be clear, the charge was appropriate, and in no way did I feel over charged. From the excellent communication from the front desk to the thorough work in the shop, I could not be more pleased with the outcome of this. There was no pressures to do unnecessary work, they made a recommendation for a axle shaft/CV joint that was making noise. As I drove away, I could hear the telltale click of the CV joint. This is something that we can take care of at a later date and is not extremely urgent at the moment. I would absolutely recommend this shop to my friends and family. If I condense this to a few words I would just say, Highly Skilled, Honesty, Integrity & great communication. read more

I honestly chose this shop only because they were open on Saturday and not many places are -- but it turned out to be a good choice overall! I am wary of auto shops and always nervous going in because I was a late bloomer getting licensed and don't know much about cars. I am wary of getting taken advantage of. They quickly seemed very trustworthy. :) We brought my car in because it was making a squealing noise when I backed out or turned the wheel sharply. Turns out the belts just needed to be adjusted. They fixed it in 10 minutes and didn't charge me since it was an easy fix. Another shop I had gone to before told me it would hundreds of dollars to fix...I'm not sure where they got that from! After that good experience, I came back for an oil change and an overall inspection. Turns out I REALLY needed new rear brakes. I trusted that I actually needed them, especially since they were so transparent with the digital inspection they provided, and they hadn't convinced me to pay an arm and a leg on my first visit. They had the whole thing taken care of in another hour or two, and then we headed back to get it. I had mentioned one of my headlights was out and didn't realize on my receipt that the wrong one was replaced. When we got home my boyfriend noticed one was still out...I called back and they said I could come back and get it fixed, even though it was just about their closing time. I know mistakes happen, so I make my judgment more based on the fix, which was great! Also, it didn't cost any more than they told me it would on the phone, which is not always the case once it's all tallied up. I appreciated the follow up afterward - I got a cute little card and a fridge magnet. However, I have since gotten more mail and an email and a phone call...maybe a little more follow up than I actually need, ha! But anyway, I will be back in the future when I have any other issues with my car! Oh P.S. - I enjoyed hearing about their past shop cats. As a #1 cat fan, I feel that any place that has/had cats living on site is immediately trustworthy. Hopefully there will be a newly adopted one there for me to love on a future visit ;) read more
