Top notch service! Taking my Mini Cooper to Autowerkes feels a little like wearing a track suit to the Metropolitan Opera. These guys service Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Porsche etc. On the day I was there, I saw an Astin Martin DB9. And then there's my cheerful but plain Jane Mini, probably feeling a little self conscious. The thing is, I'm sure that she's treated with just as much care as the supercars that surround her. The shop is cleaner than most people's kitchens. The staff is incredibly helpful and uber professional. One of the key selling points for me is that Autowerkes will always offer you a loaner car which makes the sting of driving from Portland to Freeport a little more bearable. While the customer experience and actual wrenching at Autowerkes was superb, I'm not 100% sold on the diagnosis and treatment process. Let me explain. The first time I took my car in, I asked to have the oil changed and then to have checked from head to toe just to see if anything needed work - think of it as a comprehensive physical for your car. The report that came back was good - nothing major was wrong. I had a few bad control arm bushings replaced and I was off. So imagine my disappointment when just two weeks later, my car started sputtering, losing power and almost stalling. The diagnosis was three-fold and pricey. Instead of just giving the go ahead to do all the work the suggested, I decided to do some research and talk to a mechanic friend of mine. He suggested that any one of the three things could have been causing the problem but the likelihood of all three of them needing to be fixed at the same time were very slim. So I took a chance and opted for two of the three repairs (new camshaft sensors and solenoid valves). Problem solved at a huge savings (yay me!). When I mentioned that I thought that the other issue (replacement of the pcv) would probably be necessary at some point but could wait, my service advisor agreed which irked me a tiny bit. It would have been nice to hear that this was an option. It also stands to reason that the bad pcv should have/could have been found on my first visit since it's a very common Mini issue. I'm sure that Autowerkes is probably used to customers with unlimited car repair budgets and I'm by no means saying that they suggested repairs that weren't necessary, I'm just saying that it might be worth digging a little deeper when confronted with a complex repair. I will absolutely take my car back to Autowerkes. Maybe even dressed in a track suit. read more

I'm very impressed. This facility is outstanding. I took my SUV in for fluid changes and got a call stating one of the requested services was not necessary. They also caught a problem with a strut that I've reported to two VW dealerships but that they missed. I'm impressed, and will certainly be back! read more

I took my Mercedes S500 to Autowerkes recently. Last fall I noted that one of the blinker lights was not working properly. I store the vehicle in a locked garage on my property from November through April, and I decided to wait until spring to have the blinker repaired. The car was waxed and detailed by me prior to storage. Autowerkes said they would need the vehicle for several days to complete the reapir. My wife drove the vehicle from the storage garage to Autowerkes. I was directly behind her. No one except my wife came into contact with the vehicle. It was raining steadily when we picked up the car after repair. My wife drove the car directly back to the storage area. Again, I was driving behind. Once the vehicle was inside the garage, I noted new scrapes in the paint. It was about 5:30 PM, so I did not try to reach Autowerkes until their next business day. At 8:15 the next business day, I called Autowerkes and spoke with Rick. Rick said that Voit, the owner, would get back to me. Two days later when no one had called, I called again and spoke with Rick. He said someone would call that day. No one called. It has now been a week. I am not expecting a return call. If you value your car, you may want to consider another repair facility. read more

I have had two appointments with Autowerkes Maine and both of my experiences have been extremely pleasant - - which is something I never thought I'd say about any business dealing with cars! Jess at the front desk is perfect for her job. She is friendly, knowledgeable and easy to work with. They helped me get the best price on a set of wheels and tires, worked with my not so easy scheduling issues and kept me in the loop the whole time. When one of the issues I had was still covered under and extended factory warranty I had no idea about, they let me know right away and didn't try and sneak the work in to get more money from me. I will definitely use Autowerkes Maine again in the future and recommend it to anyone with a foreign car. read more

Brought a 1998 SL500 to them to diagnose why my top wouldn't lock down and the light for it flashed along with the seat belt light on. I also wanted the instrument panel put back as it had been pushed forward and fix the lights that weren't working. It spent a week there and nothing got fixed. The gage panel was put back where it belonged which took all of 5 - 10 min. I was charged over $500 for this and the diagnosis and supposedly they fixed the top so it would lock down. The light's were still on for the roof and seat belt. They told me that there was an issue with the roll bar and that was the cause of the top light being on and that the seat belt controller was bad causing the seat belt light to stay on. Well after driving home with the wind gusting through the front of the roof I decided to check things out for myself and found that the roof wasn't locked down. Only after manually locking, did it close and the light went out. Hmmmm, so much for a roll bar issue! As far as the seat belt light, I'm in the process of checking that out. Seems the SRS light isn't working either. I suspect what they meant was bad was the Airbag controller. Who knows! I would never bring another one of my cars there again. Total buffoons when it comes to electrical diagnostics. Very good at milking you out of your money with a smile and an excuse! read more

Got state inspection; I asked them not to use screws for the front plate, they said they'll use zip ties. However, they screwed the plate in. I already had 2 holes for the bmw front plate bracket, they could have at least used the existing holes; now I have 4 holes on the bumper. First they claimed my car already had the holes, now they're admitting it's their fault but refusing to fix the damage read more

I dropped my car off at night because I had an 8:00 am appointment the next day. I called at 2:00pm the next day and nobody had even looked at the car yet. On the second day I called at 2:30pm and they hadn't even gotten an estimate together yet. I was without my car for two whole days and no work had even been done. Ended up costing me a nice $250 just for two hours of "diagnostic services". I had to go get my car without any work being done because it had taken two full days just to do nothing. I took my passat in to have the computer read and they gave me a free rental for the day, washed my car for free and even scrubbed the wheels! The staff was super friendly. Since then i have gotten plugs and ignition coils replaced and my car is running great. Its a little bit more expensive than other places but all the work they do is guaranteed. Definitely taking my car back for future repairs. read more

We have had 2 bmw s and 2 mini coopers over a period of yrs. We have used other garages prior to Autowerkes that were less than honest. Autowerkes at times has fixed the particular problem and then has noted another problem..that if left unattended to could result in a major problem. Granted at times paying for another problem is not what one hopes for ;however Our 1990 325 bmw is still on the on the road thanks to their care. When at Autowerkes I have seen cars from out of state who owners travel to Maine just to have Autowerkes check out their car,,including a Rolls Royce...I would think the owner of the Rolls would be able to afford anybody to work on their car..to me it speaks volumes re their reputation. This business is as honest as it gets and the owner, Voit ,goes over the top to provide the best service he can. read more

RIP OFF ALERT. They send out postcards with an "Incredible Introductory Offer" of a $1 state inspection. This is the bait to get you in the door, where the hook is then set. They claimed that my six year old car needed $1800 worth of work just to pass inspection, including a new tie rod end that was replaced just a year before. I paid my dollar and left for my local mechanic (where I should have gone in the first place), who did a thorough inspection and pronounced the car good to go. STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS. read more

I have nothing but good things to say about the Freeport location. I take my 2007 Mercedes in regularly and they always meet me more than halfway. It started with an air conditioning leak the dealer simply failed to correct (expensively) but which Autowerkes corrected at half the price and which has now worked fine for three years plus. It continued with allowing me to order the exact tires I wanted at Tire Rack (OK, I'm picky about my tires:) ), have them shipped to Freeport and installed. I can get a loaner if it's needed (and that helps a lot). read more
