I attended the esthetics program here and want to share my full, honest experience for anyone seriously considering it. The program itself is solid. It's a six-month, hands-on curriculum that covers all the basics you need to get licensed. The facility is clean, structured, and has the potential to be a great learning environment. If you're motivated, you can succeed and getting licensed in six months is a major plus. That part is legit. But let's talk about what no one tells you. Your experience will heavily depend on two things: 1. The teacher you're assigned. 2. Whether or not you have a consistent partner for practicals. In my class, the numbers were always off, so someone was left out and that person was almost always me. I consistently had no partner, fell behind, and got zero support from my instructor. My teacher (Amy) made it very clear from week one that she had her favorites, and I wasn't one of them. I even got written up during the first week of school for taking too long in the restroom while I was on my period a completely unnecessary and humiliating experience. Let me be real the teachers here are very dramatic. They pick and choose their favorites like it's a high school clique. And the worst part? They act like they have a chokehold on your future. They'll threaten your ability to finish the program, and they know they have full control over whether or not you get your license. It's manipulative, and they treat you like a child even though you're an adult paying for your education. There's no respect. It feels like they forget we're students investing in our careers, not characters in their ego trips. The truth is, Aveda trains you to do things only their way their routines, their style, their methods and they'll mark you wrong if you try anything different. That's fine if you just want your license, but don't expect room to express yourself or explore alternative techniques. As for the environment it's all women, maybe 1-2% guys, and a lot of weird energy. I didn't feel welcomed or supported by most of the girls, and honestly, it felt more like high school than a professional space at times. If you're socially strong and confident, you might be fine, but I saw how quick things can turn cliquey or cold. Final thoughts: You can pass, you can get licensed, and you can go on to make great money especially if you work under a doctor or surgeon after. But if you go to Aveda The Woodlands, be smart: - Connect early. - Befriend someone reliable to pair up with. - Stay on top of attendance. - Watch out for favoritism -- it's real. I'm grateful I got what I came for, but the experience could've been so much better with just a little more support, professionalism, and basic respect. read more

I would not shy away from asking for what you would like your hair to look like. After all as a customer these new students need all the experience needed in order to prepare them for real life salon encounters. So I ended up trying out the services again and was thankfully to Aveda for offering a makeup as the last service I got was not correct and the front desk experience hadn't been good. Experinence: The student I had had only been doing clinicals for 2 weeks. She was very friendly but the technique wasn't great and unfortunately when I did try to offer recommendations such as more firmness on the application there was no adjustment. Teacher: This is why I added the star is the teacher this time around did confirm the treatment and also did do a more involved follow up than last time. Feedback: I do think it is a little silly that they don't offer change so can tip but at least they put up a sign. read more

So are used to go here for many years to get my hair done by students at a great price and leave with a new look normally that I hadn't even thought about when I sat down in the chair but I called yesterday only to be told that they no longer allow the general public to come in and be student models. The students are required to find their own models, but there is no Place in which you can volunteer, so I just feel like that's quite a disservice to the students in general and know of several other women who now have to find a new place to get their hair done. read more

I continue to go for many reasons such as the time that the stylist takes to make sure you are happy before you leave I even went after Brain surgery in which, my hair was shaved in different areas, different links, and colors. I remember the first time I had a balayage done, and I was in tears, because I finally felt like myself again. most recently my stylist, Lorena has been taking amazing care of me and my hair. we also chat about what's going on in our lives during the time I am in her chair. I went for a full foil for blonde highlights/low lights. I didn't want the low lights to be any darker than my roots. After over 6 hrs, my hair came out dark brown, way darker than my roots, with minimal highlights. No explanation other than "I'm sorry it didn't come out the color you wanted". The initial professor never came over, never explained what happened, etc. I was left in shock at the dark color my hair is currently. I'm not blaming the student because things happen. I am, however very upset with the instructors. They never took the time to come over or explain anything. They never made sure my hair came out at least the color of my roots. I took a risk and contacted a student named Shannon based off of a flyer I seen posted at my local beauty supply store. She was looking for a model for hair coloring and I just so happened to be exploring coloring via Pinterest to add a little honey blonde spice to my natural hair for the summer. Aveda Institute was reputable, so I texted her and she was professional. I sent photos of my hair and we scheduled an appointment easily. Shannon did a good job considering it was her first time ever doing highlights of any kind. I wanted highlights on my dark brown hair which I expected to be difficult to achieve without bleach. With the advice of her instructors she achieved it well (especially in the back). We both learned a new technique of parting diagonal to avoid blunt blotchy highlights too. I think I can do it myself now! haha Don't be alarmed when they start rubbing your shoulders. As part of their services, they give a little shoulder massage with your service. I think it's kind of weird, but I'm not complaining lol. It wasn't anything to rave about. I will say that you definitely want to allot for the extra time you'll have to spend in the chair. Don't book anything else for the day. I was there almost 5 hours. Things just take longer when the students are learning and being careful with your locks. the school's "student care manager" never answers emails and never responds to calls. they messed up my name too many times to count, messed up my birth date to where i wasn't able to obtain my license after completing my tests. fired an educator for putting her two weeks, fired another educator for having health problems and they couldn't stay on one curriculum for teaching us state board. the administration are basically dictators who bully the students to where nobody likes them around and read my exit interview without my consent, i just asked her to sign it. the administrators essentially made up rules for our end of the program photoshoot solely based on prejudice against our class and have done the same to previous classes. this school is going in the gutter if none of these administrators get replaced with people that actually enjoy being around the younger generations and not constantly trying to put them down. thanks for teaching me the basics that's about it. read more

Not a fan. Went in for a service appointment and 5 hours later walked out with a very bitter impression of the establishment as a whole. First - I understand that it's a school. I understand the students are inexperienced. However - the problem is when the instructors are as well. As a student you don't get to choose what you do (you do that when you go to a salon) and you surely don't tell the customer you want to do something to their hair other than what they came in for. Big no-no.... My experience was nauseating and disappointing. I walked out with a receipt for nothing that I walked in for.
