So I read so many good reviews I decided to try the Avenue bar and Grill on Sunday. For an appetizer, we ordered the shrimp and garlic sauce it was delicious I could order that again. It took 40 minutes for our entrée. I ordered the Avenue style steak which came with a egg which was overcooked also came with shrimp that was dry and overcooked as well and the potato slices were not seasoned at all . My partner ordered the Picanha Grelhada the steak was very fatty hard to cut the rice and beans were good . We were not offered dessert or coffee just wasn't a very good experience. The atmosphere is old and dated also it was very dark in the bar area. We will try it again. Every cook has a bad day. read more

Small family run restaurant down the street from the Portuguese club. Quiet family friendly sitting area, hostess and waiters were pleasant and friendly. Everything we ordered was delicious, fresh and authentic. My husband and I shared a Clams Bolhão Pato as an appetizer. It was excellent. I ordered the shrimp angola as a main course and asked that it not be spicy. It wasn't spicy. It was fravorful and perfectly seasoned. My husband had the Codfish Avenue style and loved it. The dessert, a Maria cookie cake, was more than delicious. It was divine. I can't wait to have it again. The staff was welcoming and attentive. I look forward to our next visit. read more

Enjoyed a long lunch at the Avenue Bar & Grill recently & was very happy with both the service & food. For many years my go to for Portuguese food has always been O'Manel's or SolMar in Bridgeport- particularly for their traditionally prepared fresh fish, salted cod dishes, clams & shellfish. Avenue's menu was similar. A nice little bowl of marinated black & green olives, gently seasoned by fresh rosemary & accompanied by warm out of the oven rolls got us started. My companion & I split the Portuguese style braised little neck clams with smokey chorizo sausage & a plate of slightly spicy grilled Shrimp in a garlicky sauce, then moved on to Portuguese style petite sirloin steak & egg served with delicious sliced fried potatoes & surprise - a simple rabbit stew on the bone with rice & steamed veggies. The rabbit portion was generous & meaty but a tad bit over cooked. We finished with excellent coffee, Portuguese brandy & an authentic & very rich egg custard flan in a light caramel sauce. Avenue is set up like most Connecticut Portuguese restaurants with a busy casual tavern on one side & a very nice dining room on the other. Our servers were helpful & took very good care of us through out our meal refilling our bread basket multiple times, always with a smile. I highly recommend Avenue for well turned out traditional Portuguese fare. Parking can be tight in the restaurant's small lot but limited street parking is available on an adjacent street. This street is on a steep hill. read more

We found this place on our way back to Boston from a family visit in Pocono, PA. The restaurant has a cute intimate atmosphere. The husband and wife team each greeted us with great hospitality. We started off with warm bread and cocktails (Cosmo and Martini are both delicious), then codfish cakes, as appetizer (was moist and warm), house salad (fresh greens) and Avenue style steak with egg and shrimps (nice spicy Portuguese style sauce, this was our favorite dish) to share. Why aren't people talking about this place more!!! We came here with friends and both had the most delicious meal! My husband had the steak on a rock and said it melted in his mouth. The chicken marsala was so tender and the sauce and mushrooms were extremely flavorful. We had a variety of appetizers that I unfortunately did not get photos of. Each one was fabulous! First and foremost: the food. My wife got the Portuguese Style Steak. Absolutely delicious and unique, tender and juicy. The Cod I had was the best I have ever had. Giving 4 stars solely for the food.. the location and remoteness is maybe 4ish stars so I'll keep it all about what matters most the grub! We are so happy to have found a Portuguese restaurant selling authentic and curated homemade dishes. We had sangria, kinda of surprised they added canned fruit into it and they were eager for us to eat the fruit and I had a bit of hesitation bc can't say I'm a huge fan of canned fruit but holy Mary we finally tried it and more than the fresh fruit usually added to sangria this canned stuff soaks up all the alcohol it kicked you in the mouth with fun booziness.. pleasant surprise. We had clams in green sauce, good but wished there was more sauce.. the garlic shrimp was a lil overcooked but the sauce was great. For dinner hubs had the dobrada (tripe) and he said it tastes like his moms which is a WIN; I had bacalhau con natas.. such a great and classic dish. However, I could've had four people. It was amazing the next day with leftovers and a fresh fried egg for dessert. We had the flan and I was super creamy much more Caribbean Spanish style. I appreciate it that way. A true hidden gem of Naugatuck cuisine! We did not know what to expect walking in but we're surprised by the beautiful dining room and extraordinarily friendly staff. The owner even came out and introduced himself, talked about the food, and gave us a free port at the end of our meal. Unfortunately my experience at Avenue Bar and Grill was not good at all. When our table sat waiter asked us if we wanted drinks and we all said start off with water. Waiter puts 4 Poland Spring waters on our table, and walks away. We though ok, this is how they roll. We ordered 2 appetizers, one shrimp and one beef and both were so over cooked. The Beef app was grisly and tough...although the sauces they were in were great. I am a huge fan of paella and so I ordered that. It was listed as M/P so I expected fresh seafood. It consisted of lobster, clams, chicken, shrimp and maybe some sausage. I could not tell because again all protein was OVERCOOKED. The rice was runny and the lobster had clearly been of frozen variety and so over cooked you could not get ANY MEAT. Literally the tail which is supposed to have a big meaty piece literally looked like it was reused from another plate. NO MEAT. I called over the waiter and explained all the protein of the evening was so overcooked and all he said was do I want to speak with the owner instead of taking care of the complaint (valid complaint) on our behalf. I was so irritated because the only other table in the restaurant who sat directly behind us I didn't want to cause a fuss. I also noticed the other table had a pitcher of water on their table, (remember those 4 bottles place on our table without a choice???) cost us $2.00 each. We were not given the option of tap water. Our tab was upward of $180.00 and I can honestly say they made HUGE profit on that meal......there was nothing fresh...we got the leftovers. And for anyone wondering what M/P is for seafood? It's when the seafood is brought in fresh and the market value changes. You don't use M/P for frozen seafood which is a set price for the most part. I know that seafood was frozen as I get seafood every time I eat out and know the difference. Will never go back. read more

The menu has enough Portuguese specialties to make for a satisfying and enjoyable dining experience. The only problem that I encountered was the parking situation. There is one small parking lot that is usually full because it is shared with the apartments above the restaurant. There is no on street parking and the nearest public parking area is quite far away making it difficult for handicapped people. For this reason I gave it a 3 star rating instead of the 5 star rating that it deserves as a result of the excellent food and moderate prices. read more

This place is a hidden gem I've driven by many times and never noticed, which is a shame because it was amazing. The owner is a really nice guy who had a relaxed attitude and wasn't uptight about anything, he was helpful and didn't rush us, which is a great start as there's nothing worse than an owner with an attitude. I had figured the place would be a dive bar or something based on the outside/surrounding area, but it's actually a clean, nicely designed restaurant and bar that's fairly upscale. Had some clams for an appetizer which were delicious with oil and garlic. For our main course I had the ribs and my girlfriend had the grilled bronzini which was some of the best tasting fish I've ever had. Both came with sides of veggies which were cooked to perfection. The owner seemingly warned me that the ribs wouldn't have sauce of them, because apparently that's what Americans expect, but these ribs didn't need it at all, they were soft and had just the right amount of crunch. The people next to us had the steak which looked incredible and was a large size as well, so that would be something I'd get next time. Prices were fair considering the sizes, $14-17 for an entree (I ended up taking home half of it), which also came with bread and a side of cheese and olives. To top it off, we had a nice, light Portuguese wine, which complimented the meal perfectly. My only regret is not having known of this place sooner. They have an excellent picante olive oil dipping sauce. House choice of wine "Pinta Negra" was an excellent pairing. Our dishes included 1/2 a tasting of Feijoada and 1/2 portion of Bacalhau a Casa. My favorite was the Carne do Porco Alentejana! Porco (pork meat) was tastefully marinated. We concluded our meal with poached pear dessert and espresso (B.I.C.A.). We've lived in town for over 40 years and never visited Avenue Bar and Grill before. That's the only downside. We each ordered clam appetizers which were delicious. Paella was remarkable and the Portuguese Clams and Potato could have fed our entire family of four. Another has the Grilled Octopus to claim it's the best they ever had.
