This is the best bike shop around. They are clearly enthusiasts with a range of bikes and offerings. I am a pure commuter cyclist, with an 15 year old Bianchi, heavy but I love her. They treat me and my bike so kindly whenever I stop in, even though I am very 'green' on bikes and cycling. They did a beautiful tune-up for me last year, bringing the bike to 'good as new' status. The other day, someone rammed their bike into mine at our building bike rack and screwed up my brakes. I walked over there and they fixed it in under 5 mins, no charge. After hearing good things about Avenue from friends, I made a reservation for an all-day bike rental online. You can indicate what kind of pedals you want and they ask for your height to make sure the frame fits you. When I arrived at the shop, they were friendly, helpful, and efficient. I was out the door with the bike within 5 minutes. The gears were a bit finicky, but I had no major issues with the bike itself. After I returned the bike, I forgot my sunglasses case in the pouch attached to the handlebars, but they found it and had it ready for me to pick up at the front. I'd come back here again! read more

I came here during the covid lockdown in San Francisco and one guy working here to help was super nice, while another was rude ruining my experience. I bought a brand new bike online and assembled about 80% of it at home. I brought it here to assemble handlebars and pump up the tires. The first person I interacted with was extremely nice!!! He helped helped with handle bars and provided the pump for our tires, and helped us out for which we all thought would be a quick fix while taking care of another customer's transaction, then left to attend to that customer. While pumping the tires I realized the back one had a hole :( another second associate (unfortunately) then came to help up said it would be $8 for a new tube and $20 for the service. We wanted this to be taken care of, and as the first guy was very helpful, we told him we would like to do it! I also wanted to buy a bike helmet, but didn't get that far. The second associate had us sit outside awkwardly after saying I wanted it fixed, while he helped out five or so other customers that were waiting outside. He then took the bike in for 30 seconds then came back out saying he would have to treat it as a new box bike build which would be $125 since the handlebars were loose (I can tighten that myself thanks). I changed my mind and left right away. Overall, a very CONFUSING experience. All I wanted was to get my flat fixed...$125 for that? No. Got it done elsewhere for less than 20 percent of that cost. Bike shops are essential and Avenue Cyclery has been a great local bike shop for us. They are usually really busy as sometimes, there is a line going down the block. They take care of you without rushing you and ensure that they go the extra mile to ensure you are safe and ready to go. We picked up 2 bikes here, one road and one hybrid. We took both for a few spins around the block and decided to purchase them. The mechanic checked them out first to ensure they were good to go. We did have to come back a couple times for some minor maintenance stuff which only took a couple minutes. He even went the extra mile and checked my tires for me and warned my to continue doing so to prevent injury. I'm a bike noob so I appreciated as much education as I could get. Oh, and he also said I needed to adjust my bike seat which really helped smooth out my ride. Loved the service here. Loved the experience. Great guys. Support your local bike shops! read more

With all the bike shops in the city, it can be surprisingly challenging to find consistent service. I've had plenty of ok experiences but have had some of the best service at Avenue. I first checked out Avenue for a simple flat repair, but then followed up not long later due to some really awful shifting issues. While other shops couldn't fully address the issue, Avenue made the right adjustments and got things nice and smooth once again. Later on, my partner had some issues with the install on a Copenhagen wheel (done at another shop) and the guys at Avenue quickly identified the issue and got her going again. And then, most recently, I brought my bike in for a tune-up and the technician did an outstanding job. Getting it back on the road it felt better than it had in years. Highly recommend Avenue if you live in the Haight Ashbury or Cole Valley area, or if you're just looking for high quality, professional work. read more

I bought a new commuting bike (Trek FX3) at Avenue Cyclery in 2017 from Andrew, after spending about a month trying out many bikes at various shops around the city. Avenue's new bikes come with free safety checks, and also a free one-time tuneup that can be performed up to a year after the initial sale, and this was enticing at the time. I have subsequently taken the bike back into Avenue for servicing many times with mixed experiences. For the most part, they are friendly and helpful, and often do quick things, like adjusting my squealing brakes, right there while I wait, at no charge. However, the rear wheel of that new Trek failed repeatedly during my first year ownership. This was in addition to the front derailleur that had to be replaced within my first 3 months with the new bike. It's possible that my 2 mile workday commute down Irving Street is just too much for any bike to handle, and that no bikes in my price range would survive a year of that kind of abuse intact. Avenue sold me a new derailleur which later had to be swapped out for a different one because their initial choice didn't fit. After several repair attempts on the stock rear wheel, they wanted to sell me a heavy duty rear wheel for around $100 to replace it. Andrew told me the stock wheel would not qualify for warranty replacement from Trek. He would not put in a warranty claim with Trek just to see if it did, either. It was frustrating to me that a new bike needed to spend so much time in the shop, and this dampened my enthusiasm for riding considerably. I now take my bike to a different local shop that's closer to where I live, or else just do the simple things myself. Since that time, I have not had any problems with the bike, and I continue to commute by bicycle frequently. read more

Lets just say that idk where to really begin. From the first employee at the counter when i walked in greeting me and treating me very friendly to the service professional who may seem dull to some, but was SUPER patient and explained some of the issues that my bike was having to what potential scenarios were to fix or replace. I have not been heavy into the bike scene for a while so I essentially had no knowledge of gears, repairs, maintenance issues that needed to be worked on for my bike. Collin, who helped repair my bike, made this feel so much better than it was before. Is it a brand new bike? No, because i didn't replace anything, but did he make this function so much better than it was before? yes! I am very happy with the service they provided. They are direct and honest about what you need and what they will try to do. I didn't get a sense of them trying to upcharge me to buy a new bike or get new parts, which I greatly appreciated. All around amazing team of people at this shop and I would not HESITATE to recommend this shop to anybody looking to PURCHASE a bike or SERVICE their bike. Bought an Aventon Solterra 7 from here and paid $180 for assembly after shipping to store. I believe for that much money the bike would be ready to ride but upon review the handlebars were not lined up with the front wheel and the brakes were not adjusted properly. i would have to pull the brakes all the way in just to get a little bit of bite on the disc. this was a 30 second adjustment per side that they could have checked before releasing the bike to me. read more

I bought my first Trek here in 2007. Since 26 inch bicycle wheels are obsolete, I had to get rid of my 26 inch and get a 27.5 or 29 inch mountain bike. I came back and decided to purchase a 29" Trek Fuel EX 8. Sad to say I had to say good bye to my Trek Fuel EX 6 because of a cracked rear rim.... I kept that thing alive on a budget with this shop helping me out. A lot of other shops told me to get rid of it a long time ago... Not cause it sucked.. cause of their up-selling.. . Anyways... I purchased my new Trek and it came in less than a week! So I decided to try a different shop: Avenue Cyclery. From the get-go, it was night and day from my bad experiences. They were patient and eager to help me make the right choice for me, not the right choice for them. They did a lot to help me make an informed decision and to educate me about cycling! I was torn between two models and they were patient enough that I could take a _lot_ of test rides. Finally, when I settled on the cheaper model, they said it must be the right one--with no attempt to upsell me. They helped me fit it with a few accessories (rack, wheel locks, etc), and sent me on my way. Despite a slight phobia of bikes - due to a minor accident when I was younger, and a notoriously uncomfortable bike at Burning Man, I've been shying away from bike riding for a while. I decided to conquer this fear, by popping in here the other day to start looking at bikes. Judy - the woman helping me, was the perfect person to help me get over my unease at bike riding. She showed me some appropriate bikes, offered me some encouragement and reassurance, and was very patient, as I asked question after question. Great little shop where we purchased 2 bikes. Yes, we're those people...bought bikes during Covid. Honestly it's for leisure/fitness but also I'm unsure how I feel about traveling on public transportation once we start rolling back into work. My spouse has been working all this time because she is essential (thank you Jen W for being on the front lines btw) and she's noticed that lately with the roll outs of more and more people going back to work, the buses can be overloaded at times which makes it a bit uncomfortable. I'm happy to support the local shop and they are nice even when they are super busy. Free brake and gear adjustments for the lifetime of our newly purchased bikes and a first time free tune up. What a great deal. Unfortunately due to one of our bikes saddle being too high and the other had the grip break off, they were happy to assist us and get us quickly back onto the road. You can tell that they aren't just doing this for business but they actually care about bikes and bikers as well. Be patient with them and they'll be patient with you. They also offer rentals which is nice for people that want to ride around the park etc. Check these guys out when you have a chance! read more

Back in the day, the day being the mid-1970s, for a brief time I was a bicycle messenger for the Speedy Messenger Service, headquartered on a wharf just north of the then-derelict Ferry Building. Suffice it to say, given that we rode one-speed bicycles with balloon tires, I soon came to appreciate the value of a well-tuned multi-speed bicycle when riding the hills of San Francisco! In recent years in coming back to San Francisco, I have rented bikes from various generic bike rental services clustered on the edges of parks and wharfs. Suffice it to say the rental experience has generally not been very pleasant, given the clunkers that they have for rent. Thus it was a welcome surprise to rent bikes from Avenue Cyclery, and find that they were in excellent condition, with trued wheels, great brake pads, well-tuned gears etc., etc. Plus the staff was very accommodating and pleasant to deal with. We rode all through Golden Gate Park, down to the beach, and up past the windmills back to Stanyan Street, having a great ride! In summary, this will be my go-to bike rental place every time I am back in SF! read more

Wanted to take a stroll through Golden Gate Park and this bike store was right next door to hippie hill. Perfect spot for a tourist, you get the park to the right and Height Ashbury is left around the corner. They had nice hybrid Treks for us to ride!
