It was my first time getting my haircut at a beauty school so I was a bit nervous but my stylist Emma was fantastic! She was personable and completely at ease with the scissors. I couldn't have been more pleased with the service I got. There was however a disgruntled customer who had no idea what they wanted done with their hair and expected a high end salon experience. Then berated the poor girl. Rude! People need to remember this is a school and these are students! Don't take your frustrations out on them. You know, I've been reading yelp reviews on Avenue Five Institute since, well, long before I started here, and I've never seen a review about Avenue Five Institute as what it is -- a school. Don't get me wrong, we all love what you have to say about our services and it makes us feel all shiny and brand new, but I'd really like to give a review about how amazing it is to actually attend school here. First of all, we have the most amazing ownership. Brandon is genuinely amazing, and he really cares about us (the students), the clients, and all of the wonderful people who work here. And, at twenty-six years old, to have been running this amazing place for 3 years strong is pretty impressive! Secondly, we have AMAZING instructors. Bryan, Dionne, Teela, Shawyn, and Teresa really make us daytime cosmos feel good about what we're doing and they're always making sure that we know one important thing -- WHY. They're constantly working with us to better ourselves in our craft, and they never cease to do exactly what they're here to do -- teach us to be amazing hairstylist. Also, you make amazing friends coming through here who genuinely care about you, I can't tell you how many amazing friends I've made in just five months of attending here. Talented, sweet-hearted people who will always make your day better and brighter every time you walk through the student entrances. These people grow to be not only your friends but your colleagues, stylists, and colorists, and I love everyone I've had the pleasure of meeting here. Last, but not least, is you the clients. i am so happy to have found out about this place! Again, thank you fellow Yelpers! I called to make my appt for highlights and a cut. The stylist, who is about halfway through the 1500 hours the program requires, did a really nice job brightening up my hair with highlights. She consulted with a supervisor who suggested something different than what she planned (being new to this i did not exactly follow-10v vs 20v), and then later, before we rinsed, she consulted with her neighbor for tips with toner. She wrote it all down, too, for next time. I thought she did a nice job cutting my hair (a basic trim) but again consulted with the supervisor a bit over my bangs. That she was willing to ask for advice is a positive sign in my book --my hair looks great! i am really satisfied with the quality, not to mention the price! i will sooo be going back! read more

Cool! I'm a fan of budget beauty treatments, and this place is tops in that category. It's a beauty school, but it mostly doesn't feel like it. Very cool salon atmosphere in the entryway and hair stations, sort of more industrial in the waxing/facial area. It wasn't that relaxing, and I imagine that it'd be worse if the other three beds in the area were occupied. I got the deluxe 80-minute facial today, and while I'm not sure what made it deluxe, it was nice. And for $25, it can't be beat. The student technician (aesthetician-in-training?), Shea or Shay, who did my treatment, was OK but not especially detail-oriented. Her fingernails got in the way a bit, and she was kind of clumsy around my eyes and lips. She was amazing on the massage portion of the procedure, though, and my shoulders loved her. I bet she'd be great at the whole process, given a bit more time. The Dermatologica products they use aren't the best-smelling things I've experienced, but they seem to be effective. I'm happy with my face's look and feel now, and that's what matters. I'll definitely be back for more skin work and possibly an inexpensive haircut. Note on appointments: The hours listed online don't seem to be that accurate, as I wasn't able to schedule an appointment at all on Monday (they had a lecturer all day and weren't taking clients) and was able to come in at noon on a Tuesday, before their listed hours. read more

Avenue Five gets its system better each time I go. I arranged for a one hour Vitamin C facial and some consultation on how to make 40 the new 30. (Yes, it CAN HAPPEN. Don't hate.) Melanie did a great job tending to and addressing some areas where I can be a little more proactive. The facial was wonderful, and I received complements on my glow for two days, which is good, because I was in a bad mood. So, not only will your facial be great, but it will put a game face on you when you need it. The body polish she used on my hand gave them new life (So I bought a bottle!) Next time I am staring my glycolic peel regimen. If it works well, great. If not, I will be yelping some plastic surgeon from Westlake. My only criticism is that when I checked out, I wrote $10 on the tip line and the clerk charge my card only 10 cents. (I better call.) read more

Last Friday, I went with a friend and her daughter for another Ultimate Facial. It was just as wonderful as the first time. I received a glycolic peel and glowed for days. My friend and her daughter loved their facials and said they were going back soon. Avenue Five will add eyelash extensions to their long list of beauty treatments later this fall. Rouchelle, who has done my facial both times, just received hers during a practice session. They were gorgeous and looked exactly like her own lashes! I will do this around the holidays. They last from 5 to 7 weeks. I think I've discovered the fountain of youth here! read more

It's a mixed bag. But it's one of those really cute little Victoria's Secret bags where the goods are wrapped in that pretty paper and have the great practical handles. And you can handle just about all your girly business up in here - you can handle it while tripping out on how inexpensive it is. Everything is inexpensive. I personally found some things to be a better service than others; for example, their skin treatments are incredible while the pedicures are just ok. However, it's never been bad. And just so you know, you wouldn't think this was a school at all without being told because the products used are high quality and the atmosphere is fairly upscale and mod as well as professional. I guess what I love most about this place is that even though it's a school, I have found it to be better in many ways than some other full service spas that overuse the word "spa" until it becomes a 4 letter word. read more

I have to say that the owner of Avenue Five really does care about his clients and business. I was contacted by him immediately after posting my review and he said he wanted to make things right. He offered a complimentary massage and full refund of my previous service. I was contacted by both the Front Desk Manager as well as the Massage Program Director reschedule my appointment and make things better. When I arrived for the complimentary massage, I was greeted by the front desk, and the Massage Program Director. The student massage therapist was introduced, then did a through interview to pinpoint my specific needs. I really appreciate everything that was done to make this visit better. read more

Its not every day you get a 10 dollar haircut and people ask you which salon you have just been to- they want to go...! After my hair was seriously butchered at Baldwin beauty school, and my bank account left no room for my once uber valued trips to JR or Birds Barbershop, I had to search out an alternate. Voila...Avenue Five! Although this was a beauty school, it had the upscale feel of a contemporary salon. The front counter staff was friendly, the chairs comfy, the place was well designed and chic. My stylist seemed to have her stuff together. I always dread small talk with hair stylists for some reason, but she showed my pictures of her dog,we talked about moves to austin and boyfriends and she gave me exactly what I wanted. And here is the uber plus. At other beauty schools I have asked for some unusual stuff done to my hair...usually the students look confident, try to do what I ask, and fail. Here- my stylist asked a teacher who showed her exactly what to do. It just made me feel much more secure that here they were not afraid to ask for help when needed. With a yelp discount, I paid 11 bucks. Now that is a quality deal. I highly recommend Avenue Five! read more

With this review, I'm that kid who's afraid to jump into the water. I don't want to but I want to but it's cold but the sun is burning oh no ! - what should I do? Because I don't want to tell you about Jessica. But I mean I do, because she's awesome, but I don't because I don't want you to have her. Ok? Do NOT book an appointment with Jessica. Do you swear? Do you promise? Ok. Jessica is a godsend. She has helped deep condition and grow out my hair for the past 2 months. It's super shiny and soft. I only trust her with my trims, but when I've had someone else do the deep conditioning, they've been great too - just not as thorough and caring as Jessica. You're not picking up your phone to make an appointment with her, right? If you are, I was kidding. Her name's... Martha. Yes, Martha. I like how she asks Teddy to come over when she's done. He's always super sweet and happy to see me back with my growing mane. He approves and merrily goes on his fabulous way. Then Jess...I mean, *Martha* and I gossip some more, and sometimes wonder who chose the radio station that particular day. I wont have enough money to afford her when she graduates, probably because she's amazing. And she listens. And Avenue 5 is a fantastic school. But until then, I can have her all to myself. After seeing all the positive reviews here and checking out their website, I decided to give this place a go. I'm sort of picky who cuts my hair and how they do it, so this was kind of a hard thing for me to do. When my friends heard that I was going to a place where the students got to practice on ya, they kind of chuckled and said make sure you take before and after pics. After popping a valium to calm down I sauntered in to a sleek and modernly design studio. It was pretty busy for a Thursday afternoon which I guess was a good sign. Upon checkin, they made me sign a waiver saying I wouldn't blame them for anything (including social embarrassment). Sweat beads forming, I signed it. After waiting for a couple minutes, contemplating my fate for the next month (and also remembering that spring break and SXSW were coming up) I started re-thinking my decision to come here. But my stylist/student called my name and I had no way out now. She was actually very professional and asked me everything I wanted.. no detail was spared. Then she brought an instructor over to re-confirm what she was going to do, of which the instructor offered some advice. Then she started.. I had to take off my glasses so all I saw was a blurry visage. She was super chatty so the time flew by. In the end, the haircut was close to what I wanted. It had some roughness to it but thats to be expected of a student and also a first time cut with someone new. I'm confident enough in her to go back in a couple weeks because 1) its only $7, 2) the students only remain for 6 weeks and I'd like to build on what she did last time, and 3) I purposefully asked her to not cut it too short b/c she was a student and I was unsure of her skillz. "The time has come to....GALVANIZE!!! c'mon, c'mon, c'mon..." This Chemical Bros song was in my head on Saturday as I had my first Galvanic Facial. What is that, Carla? Umm, magic. It's this device that is hand-held, the metallic end is like a baby spatula, and it will make a noise that will have you wanting to climb the walls if you can hear high-frequency noises well. (OH I CAN!!) But this magic wand makes all your ickiness go away. Evidently the high-frequency liquifies the sebum and just knocks it right out of you pores. Okay, clearly I'm not a scientist so some or all of this can be wrong. What is right and I mean oh so right is how my skin was a mess on Saturday and just as SMOOTH as can be today. I've never had something create this much of a change in one visit. I am going back on the 9th and can't wait to see it get even better. Avenue 5, rocks if you have a skin issue and really benefit from regular treatments as I do. There is no way I could go every couple of weeks to a normal salon and have the intense treatments my tempermental skin demands. Here, it's no problem. Right now I am with Julie who is AWESOME. I think she is there another few months (I hope so because she's made my skin's betterment her mission). When you get your facial, you are in a room wih other beds, but that seriously doesn't even phase me and I thought it would. It's one reason I waited so long to try treatments here. If that is holding you back, you owe it to yourself to try it just once. Even if you feel slightly bothered, say to yourself "I can buy x, y, & z with the money I'm saving today". 2 stars? 3 stars? Ugh. I don't know. I'm so torn about my hair right now. See, after spending 7 hours and $87 (plus tip) getting color, highlights, and a cut, I learned that time is money and you get what you pay for. First of all, 7 hours on my day off made it seem like not much of a day off. Especially since I hadn't eaten yet. I got there at 9:25 for my 9:30am appointment. I wasn't called on until 9:45-9:50am. After consulting on the color, they decided they were going to color my hair and THEN bleach the high lights. I should have just stopped right there. I have thick, curly hair and bleach is not its friend. Bleaching right over fresh color? Not a good idea. Over all, the color and high lights came out pretty good. My hair felt really dry, though. The cut is where most of the point deductions came in. My curly hair never gets blown out or straightened at home. It has to be cut to wear curly. I showed the lady a picture of what I wanted, and my hair is completely different. The longest length is not the same on both sides. The layers are different on both sides. In this case, my curly hair is both a blessing and a curse. If I straighten my hair, this mop is going to look a mess. I won't be back to get my hair done. I might check out the esthetician services, however. read more

A group of six girls, including myself, came here to get our nails done. Overall, the facility is really nice, but if you're looking for a good manicure, I would not come here. They don't cut your cuticles. Several of the students are not studying to be nail technicians, so they just file, buff, and paint your nails, which is kind of pricey for 8 dollars (not including tip). There are several other salons you can get much better manicures at for about 12-15 dollars, and they actually cut your cuticles and properly manicure your nails. My mom ended up getting a facial, which she said for $15 was totally worth it. read more

Does Avenue Five really need another great review? I mean seriously...who wouldn't be scrambling to book an ultimate facial after reading all these? But it was such a great experience, I want to shout it from Mount Bonnell! I can say that they definitely did not disappoint. I'm now on a mission to tell all the fabulous women I know about this steal of a deal. I called a week ahead and booked a microfacial (microdermabrasion + a basic facial) with Crystal. I'd never had that done before and didn't quite know what to expect. It was still a total surprise since she never volunteered to tell me. I suppose I could have asked....but I like the element of surprise. If you're curious, it's like a cross between a strong vacuum cleaner and a rough piece of sandpaper moving all over your face....but tolerable. Envision cleaner pores and think happy thoughts. ;) The whole treatment was very relaxing and Crystal was very professional. The only suggestion I would make is for them to offer a small glass of water at the end of the procedure (just like the dentist does) since lots of small crystals can end up in your mouth somehow. I swear my mouth was closed the entire time. I know it was because the included neck and shoulder massage was so incredible that I forced myself to keep it shut as not to let out any awkward and embarrassing moans of pleasure. Regardless of the grit in my teeth, I will totally be back. What's not to love about affordable pampering with high quality products? But if you hear any funny sounds from behind the curtain.... it wasn't me. read more

I, too, have to thank Yelp for letting me know about Avenue Five. I went in last week to have eyelash extensions done. The place where I've had them done before has gotten several accolades, but the price was a little beyond my reach. The day of my appointment Crystal called to say the student she'd initially booked me with wasn't staying that night, but another had offered to see me. Nothing against the student who didn't stay, but WOW did this turn out in my favor!! Jenny did my extensions and just in case you're nervous about having a student do something near your eyes, let me reassure you -- she not only did a better job with the application than the previous person who did them -- she was infinitely more professional. (Ironic, eh? A student more professional than, well, a professional!!) I can't praise Jenny enough. My lashes look phenomenal and I am beyond happy with them. I would recommend Jenny a thousand times sooner than I'd recommend the place where I had them done before. The person who did my lashes previously (not at Avenue Five) TALKED ON HER CELL PHONE almost non-stop while she worked on me. I don't mean on a bluetooth or even headphones. Tucked between her head and shoulder. I'm sorry but there's no way you can pay attention to what you're doing and be on your cell, too - and these were not emergency calls. These were talking to a friend calls. Jenny , however, was totally focused on what she was doing and was extremely organized, calm and professional. If you're lucky enough to have her work on you, you'll rave as much as I am. I plan to ask her to keep in touch with me so I can continue to see her after she graduates. Hate to admit it, but the cut quality is slipping. Both of my recent cuts here have been a mess, and the layers are downright shameful. Both cuts were supervised by an older female instructor with dark hair who seems to be always wearing a shawl. She looks at the terrible layers I'm given and puts her stamp of approval on them. Can't say I'm all too motivated to go back. My hair is a mess and now I have to pay someone else to fix it. read more

Avenue Five rawks hard...my first good day of the year was spent at Ave5. After opening up my 401k statement in early January to see that I've lost over 40% of my savings (thanks, Merrill Lynch!), I needed to save some $$ ASAP. I'd read glowing Yelp reviews about Ave5 so I decided to stop by. My hairstylist, Katlin, did a very professional job on getting rid of my proto-mullet. All for $7. Avenue Five uses the same (expensive) products as my 'regular' stylist - namely Davines. I'm not a guy into Dirk Diggler-levels of body care, but I couldn't pass up the coupon offer on Ave5's website for 1/2 off the normal $25 price of the facial. That's right, $12.50 for an 80 minute facial using Dermatologica skincare stuff. The aesthetician - J.C. - was also professional and spent time explaining what potions were being applied to my face and why. This is a true bargain, Yelpers. Great prices, nice environment, and good results. Good Yang feel to the place. No blue rinse in evidence. Five stars++ read more

I had a facial today with Berkeley and it was fantastic! Not being a frequenter of facials I was a little nervous going into it. She was super knowledgeable, friendly - totally put me at ease. I recently broke out and my skin has been ruddy. We worked through what my goals for the session were and we met all of them! I left glowing (both happy and legit dewy and poreless) and without breaking the bank. Avenue Five did a great job on my belayage! I was really happy on how well the student did on my hair. Also, its awesome how it was only half the price of what I would get at a salon. It took about 3 hours to finish my hair, but she was very careful and plus I have dark hair. It took longer to process and lighten my hair. The institute is very open and busy. I am a happy camper! Went there for the first time yesterday and had permanent hair color. My student was only 20, a baby chick. She did a great job and my bill was only $25 (yay yelp discount). I gave Mary a nice tip. She will be graduating in 2 weeks so it won't be likely you'll get to see her. The instructors checked on her three times during my process. It took 2 hours which is longer than at a professional place but I had a complicated color to do. I appreciate the time she took to get it done right. I did have some hesitation on using a hair school for my daughters hair. I do have to admit though, this place is AWESOME!!! Not only does the place have great prices, the staff is amazing too. I was encouraged by the positive reviews on Yelp, but alas, my experience was poor. My "stylist" kept repeating that I wanted my hair "3/4 inch shorter" when in fact I kept telling her "I want it 3/4 inch LONG". She seemed very nervous, though she was friendly and nice. After she spent 5 minutes filling out some forms (?), she told me she was going to "be right back". I sat in the chair for another 10 minutes before taking off the smock and getting up and leaving. I don't care how cheap the haircuts are, that is unacceptable service. Update: The president of the company just wrote me a nice apology, so I'm bumping them up to 2 stars. read more

It's been a very long time since I've gotten around to writing an update to my review, but better late than never. I wanted to say that only one day after I had written my negative review, I received an e-mail from the president of Avenue Five. It was very nicely worded. He was very respectful, understanding, and apologetic in the letter, and enthusiastically claimed that the institute would use my complaints as learning experiences for their students. He also generously offered a free consultation in which their instructors could fix my cut, and a free facial. I declined these, because I thought that "fixing" my cut would require more cutting, which, after having it cut way too short already, was not appealing, and I don't really need a facial. Sadly, I still, to this day, would rather pay full price for a haircut at a different salon than go back to Avenue Five. I am forgiving, but not when it comes to my hair (and gosh, it's been months and it's still insanely difficult to deal with.) Regardless, the written apology and professionalism of the president definitely earns them a third star. It felt nice to know that everything I said was taken very seriously, and they considered the opinion and satisfaction of their clients to be integral to the education of their students and the well-being of the company. read more

I've gone here twice for facial treatments. My most recent visit was GREAT! I received a Clear Complexion Treatment from Laura. She was awesome; she listened to my concerns and addressed the specific areas that I wanted to focus on. She explained each step of the treatment and what to expect. At the end of my facial, she recommended additional home follow-up care and Avenue Five procedures that would continue to target the areas of concern that I have. Listen-do you want to know a secret? Do you promise not to tell? woah woah woah Perhaps The Beatles could keep a secret, but it looks like my little secret is out. Gone are the days that I could receive compliments on my fabulous new 'do and smile slyly to myself, smug in the knowledge that while my friends had doled out the big bucks, I had spent a fraction of the cost of typical salon services. When did I realize the secret was out? Was it when Dej M. coyly avoided questions about her new cut and then mentioned my favorite stylist by name in her review? Was it the time I walked in on some poor girl in the bathroom only to realize that ear-piercing shriek belonged to my best friend (um, ever heard of locking the door?!?!)? Was it when I ran into another friend in the lobby? Was it the many other Yelp reviews? Undoubtedly the secret is out. The drawbacks: -This is a school, so the services can take excruciatingly long. Don't expect a quick cut on your lunch break. -With nail services, they can't cut your nails, just file & polish. Even with these minor drawbacks, this place is well worth it! read more

My review is long overdue, now that I've been to Avenue 5 about five times already... I love this place! You get a great cut and/or color at a fabulous price and everyone is so friendly. I recommend Jessica M. who is so sweet and does a great job! You can tell she truly cares about the look you are trying to achieve and is serious about her job there. I've had my hair cut, colored and highlighted and my bill has never exceeded $50. Unlike at any other salons, I actually feel excited to pay my bill! True, your bum may get a little sore from sitting longer than usual, but the stacks of magazines help pass the time! My only "con" would be the front desk staff. I know they are working on it, but I've experienced 2 mix-ups so far. One time I was scheduled with a certain stylist, I show up and they said it was a mistake because she was already taken (too late to cancel & reschedule). The other time my girlfriend and I were scheduled for the same stylist, same time, same day. We learned this from each other the night before & couldn't call until the next morning, when my gf had to cancel due to the error. I also might add a request that the wash sinks be cushioned a bit more? When resting your head on it for quite sometime during a color process, it can really hurt your neck! read more

After hearing nothing but really good things about this school, and having had a root touch up by my friend Scarlett a couple of years ago, I decided it would be fun to go back to get a strand test for the Global Keratin Treatment from her husband Chris, who is now always posting pictures of amazing work too. I have to say I was not only blown out beautifully, by Chris, flat ironed with extreme care, but I was also "blown away" by Jessica, Chris's instructor, who was confident in what she was doing, which in turn, made me feel really good about everything...for example-even though she did the blow out and flat iron on pretty much one side of my head and Chris the other in completely different amounts of time, they ended up looking amazing as a whole. Everyone in the school looked like they were having fun and really learning things they wanted to learn, they had good products, a good color line, everything one would want, nothing you wouldn't...five stars all around read more

After reading all the great reviews, I tried Avenue Five and I think there should be some balance here. I'm not going to rate it a 1 or 2 to try to bring the average down to the 3 that it probably deserves but I will try to give you a better feel for what you actually get. For those who prefer short reviews, in a nutshell, it is a very affordable haircut but no better, and maybe not even quite as good as Great Clips, Supercuts, or TGF, all of which are probably closer to you. For those who want more details, you will make your appointment and be assigned to a cosmetology student who has completed a couple of months of training and is now ready to work on clients. The salon itself is very nice and the checkin process very friendly and modern. In fact, all the students and trainers I saw were quite nice and friendly. And the price is great! As far as the experience itself, you will meet your student and talk about what you want done. He/she will look over your hair, try a few things to get a feel for the weight, texture, thickness, and other things that will affect the cut. The student will take notes and then will bring the instructor to your chair and explain what they want to do. The instructor will give feedback or correct anything that sounds wrong and sign off on that part. Then you're off to the shampoo bowls (I won't review that and only say it was nice and they were careful to give the good head massage that is the real reason most people pay extra to be shampooed). You'll head back to the chair for the cut. This was the part that has me thinking I may not be back. The student who cut my hair was very careful and tentative which is not necessarily a bad thing except that it resulted in more of a trim than a cut and it took almost 2 hours (twice the time I had allowed for the cut!) The instructors are walking around observing but the original instructor we had never showed again and the one who was present the rest of the time seemed more interested in chatting with the student sitting in the chair next to us (presumably because she was waiting to be assigned to a client) than she was in helping the other students who actually had clients on which they were working. In the end, by the time my student specifically called the instructor for help, I had been in the chair for an hour and a half already! The instructor pointed out some things that the student needed to straighten up and so I just didn't even want to mention that she'd barely cut my hair at all! I did mention some layering I wanted done in the front, which was the main reason I'd come (and which had not yet been done), and the instructor offered to finish that part. After a few quick snips, she pronounced me done and both asked how I liked it. I didn't but they were so nice and I was an hour late to my next errand already so there was no point in being truthful. I was blow dried and sent away. I said it was fine (the products they used did smell really good!) and I paid and left. So, yes, you will get a very affordable cut. For me, personally, I will just feel good about supporting the cosmetology school and student but I will likely have to pay again to have my hair actually cut. So, take the reviews with a grain of salt; they probably are a little higher than they should be. It's likely a gamble and depends on who you get. I got a very nice friendly student who hopefully learned a little from the experience and I learned that I was probably unrealistically hopeful that I could get a good haircut that also happened to be cheap! read more

Painfully slow...... Be prepaired the services here take a long time ( my hair cut took 4 hours) That's OK, the haircut was well worth it. I knew it would take a while since they are a school and I did see on Yelp that it would take time and the school also tells you when you call to make an appointment. Erin cut my hair, she did a great job. I think things would have gone quicker but the instructor was pulled into a lot of different directions. I don't know if they just happen to be short instructors or if one was off that day? Every time Erin has a question she had to wait her turn to have the instructor some over and check the cut and answer her questions. I will go back and see Erin it will be interesting to see how she has progresses over the next 6 weeks. So if you have the time to spare help these students out, I am sure they will aprreciate it. read more

I've been going to this place for over a year now. I trust no one with my hair and I was having some issues with growing it out and having it still look good. I'm glad I came here because they knew exactly what they were doing and if they didn't,they weren't afraid to call their teacher over~Big Shoutout to Terry "Scissorhands"! You do great work!~ Hard to beat great service and price for a shampoo,cut, and dry (about $12).They also provide excellent service with their Global Keratin Treatment. It takes about 5 hours but then you have beautiful silky hair for about 3 months. Do it. It's worth it. I've recommended this place to all of my friends. read more

I am on the fence about this place. It was definitely a positive experience. That much I know. But there were some low points that should be mentioned. First, I walked out with better hair then I walked in with. I would call that a definite positive. I wanted to get my hair cut, colored, and streaked. And that is exactly what happened. And it looks good, not to toot my own horn or anything... Second, it took 3 and a half hours...wait for it...WOAH that's a long time. Yea, luckily I didn't have anything planned until later, and I wasn't in any real rush. However, if I had any expectation at all of getting out of there in 2 hours, I probably would have been pissed. Luckily I was in a very laid back mood and I understand that the back and forth between student and instructor adds a lot of time. Third, it only cost me $40 dollars!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!! I mean, thats INSANE. Normally cut, color, streak, would cost at least $80 or more. Although it also cost me 3 and half hours of my life that I can never get back...but oh well. So overall, my experience was good. The students are great! They work hard and they want to make you happy. Ask for Shannon B, she was good, and a good conversationalist too. read more

Remember, this place is primarily a SCHOOL Don't go in there expecting a life-changing haircut. And be warned: this place is gaining in popularity and the student stylists are super-booked, and you cannot get an appointment earlier than two weeks. You can try to be a walk-in, but good luck! The facility itself is fantastic. I've been in some salons that don't look nearly as slick--I love this facility! My three-star review is for the simple fact that I wish the students would be a little more daring. As students, I feel like they are holding back quite a lot and really doing not much more than a trim. They are under the watchful eye of their instructors, so I am not sure why the instructors would ever allow someone to leave with a bad haircut, or allow people to have to endure sitting in the salon for hours on end, but it sadly does happen with any salon you go to. (I've been in a SIX hour chair once at a salon in San Antonio...worst experience ever.) Bottom line: Avenue Five is at least worth a shot. I recently came here for my 3rd visit -- all for permanent color. I had some not-so-good experience when I went there last time. But 3rd time is a charm, it turns out to be a perfect trip and I would definitely come back for more. On my first visit, the girl who did my hair did a slightly different chemical mix so at the end it covered my root color but was not able to put on the red color that I wanted. So they offered to give it a try again for free and it worked. But the 2nd girl was a little reckless, I was a little irritated to see my sculpt,ears and neckline getting tinted everywhere. On my 3rd visit, I let the instructor and student decide on the color and she was careful and great to talk to. She made sure I don't get color on my face and neckline and did a great job in mixing the color. I noticed that they used Sebastian product for almost everything, it is great. I love the final product and recommend others to try too. read more

$12 women's shampoo and cut. Can't beat that! Takes a long time since hair dressers are still learning-- be prepared to sit for awhile. They ask instructors for help, instructors might do some damage control, ask around for a student with talent and great vision. I lucked out and got a great stylist the first time around (her name's Kat). I'm super picky about my haircuts, but I let her have free reign to do whatever she thinks would look good on me. So far, so good! I've been back twice and I tell all my friends about this place. I'm so happy I finally found someone who cuts my hair the way I like in the style she chooses at a price that's too right. read more

I am so happy I decided to go here! Saw the awesome reviews on Yelp and checked out the cheap prices online before making an appointment for a chemical peel and a cut and color. The place is very nice and so are the people. I had Tammy for the chemical peel and she was very nice and informed. She gave me a fantastic peel (glycolic) and also went over some recommendations for my skin. She also did some extractions for me- no charge. What a nice lady! My skin feels great. Next up I had Jacklyn for my hair. She was super cute and friendly and very meticulous. The instructor came over to ask her what her plans were for my hair color and she had it down. She made sure to do my hair as close to perfect as possible, the whole time being entertaining and wonderful. While I had to wait I went out to have a smoke break with her and some of the other students. They were all so nice. After that Jacklyn cut and styled my hair, making sure to get all the split ends with barely taking any length. I love it! Here's the best part. The lady at the desk told me it was only $84 for the peel (with extractions), cut, color, and style. This would have been $300 easily at any other salon of this quality. I told her she must have left something out but it really was that cheap! I will never go anywhere else. read more
