I get that this is students. I was lucky enough to get a good haircut here so I wanted to get my eyelashes permed and colored too. Guess what, my lashes didn't perm at all, not even a curve. I lay down and basically the student put on the perm solution too early or did it poorly, no worries the instructor comes in and fixes it because they don't want to overprocess my lashes they don't leave it on that long that's fine. The student proceeds to do a poor hand massage and poor neck massage, that's fine, again learning. She then takes forever to clean up my eyes why because she applied the dye very poorly which required so much clean up that when I got up I still looked like a raccoon, that's fine, learning. I get up, my lashes didn't even curve. Not even a little bit. I'm upset obviously because I just spent 1.5 hours on this table to look EXACTLY THE SAME. The instructor comes in too explain what happened and again I get it but you didn't give me this explanation before I laid down? No disclaimers no nothing. She said okay my advisor isn't here but we want to make this right we want you to come in again and fix this. So NICOLE calls me this morning and is like I'm so sorry blah blah blah I was like okay I'll schedule my next appt, the instructor had mentioned complimentary. Came in for a 60 min facial followed by a haircut. This is my first time coming to an Aveda school. Facial- relaxing and good flow. i wish there was more shoulder massage but it was professional and enjoyable. Haircut- i wanted to get a trim, long layers, and face framing strands. I loved my haircut but it took much longer than i expected. I saw the reviews and people have said it took long so I made sure to have an ample amount of time, I was just starving haha. I appreciated the students for being so diligent and careful with the service. Instructors definitely knew what they were doing and checking the haircut. Would I come back? Yes i would. This week, a minor trim to an existing short hairstyle turned into a torture of sorts and a very choppy result. Nary a supervisor in sight. TLDR; used to be good, they did an internal overhaul, it's worse now. I've been coming here for over a year and really loved it, but there's been a noticeable decline in the last few months. I'm told they did a program overhaul about 6 months ago, and it's definitely not for the better. The last appointment, it was some basic changes-- no amenities, longer wait, less professionalism. This time, me and two other people came for our appointments to find out that our hair people had left for lunch, with no ability to be contacted and no expected return time. I waited around for an hour before heading out. The retail manager was a total gem, really lovely guy, but it seemed like he was doing his best in a system that had been poorly set up. Bottom line: if you decide to come, you'll end up with a totally fine haircut... if you can get one. read more

We went here to do facials for a friends birthday. This is a school so the aestheticians are all students. Because of that the prices are much cheaper than what they are for a fully licensed aesthetician. I had a really relaxing facial here. The student that I was paired with also brought in a licensed teacher to help her in the beginning when they analyzed my skin. it was a very cozy relaxing room with calming music. I fell asleep during my facial because I was so relaxed. I would definitely come here again because even though they are students, you don't really see too much of a difference, but the price is much cheaper so I think it's really worth it! read more

Look I get it... it's a school so you are not getting professionals you are getting students. So what more can you expect. But the girl I got for my haircut. I was her first male fade ever. I asked have you ever practice on anyone she stated no. Have you taken any classes on fades yet... she stated no... right then and there I should have gotten off the seat and ran.... but hey I'll be your practice run... oh boy was I in for a ride. Imagine walking into a place and picturing a nice smooth conversation with your sister and a fresh new cut... and then actually getting the total opposite. Everytime I looked at her inthe mirror I can see the lack of confidence she was giving herself. I tried to hype her up bit it did not work. So she ran from me... to her teacher he came and boom fresh fade... I give it to the guy he can cut and style your hair. He left the top long gave it good definition with some wave for product. Twice have I received a phone call to cancel my appointment. The first time, I was understanding. They were backed up and couldn't get to me before they closed. I understand this is a school and the students work slowly. The second time they canceled on me was 15 minutes before my appointment. They told me the student had just left. I received so many texts and emails to confirm my appointment. I was mindful and respectful to have three hours out of my day set aside for my for appointment. They couldn't return that same respect to me. I was on my way to their salon when they called me to reschedule. I will not reschedule my rescheduled appointment. Aveda does not deserve my time. If you're going to send me multiple reminders about my appointment, you should be sending multiple reminders to your students about their appointments. I am beyond upset. Aveda has lost all my respect. This is appalling business practice. read more

Don't make an appointment here if you actually need services. I've made 3 appointments for my daughter. First appointment went as expected. Cut wasn't great, but hey it is a school and she liked the color. The next 2 appointments were cancelled after we got there. I understand it is a school, but surely they know before you walk in the door if your appointment is cancelled. With the first appointment I had called to confirm just hours earlier. Very unprofessional... Left me in shampoo area for an hour as educators and student talked about my hair. one of the educators came over and said my hair was ash, cool color. I said oh it was supposed to take on a warm look. I only asked the student "did it not turn out". The original educator came in and said it was fine. I had no mirror to even say anything. I let student wash it out and I walked to her station. The student combed my hair. The educator took the scissors without asking how i wanted it and chopped off the back of my hair and then told me he was done and would have to leave. I was applauded at the treatment and told I must go somewhere else to finish. The 2 educators and manager told me I treated the student badly. So untrue I never said anything to her except "does it look ok when I was in the shampoo room with no mirror. I do know that the student was very upset during my service because she got a phone call from family members saying they would not attend her graduation from the school today Saturday 22. That is when she became focused on that instead of my hair. There was no excuse for any of this especially the male educator who halfway cut my hair. I have been a customer of the school in Austin for 10 years and have never been treated this way. Aveda need to take their name off the school since they no longer own them. read more

Didn't feel like paying $50+ for a 4-inch trim, so after reading several recommendations to get a haircut here, I decided to go for it. Overall, it's decent for the low $18 cost (shampoo, cut, blowout) plus tip (all-in I spent $28, which beats my $55 + tip cut at Ulta). Expect to be here for 1.5-2 hours though if you're doing the full shampoo/haircut/blow dry - they're students so they're still learning (I appreciate the attention to detail even if it takes a lot longer than a professional cut), so if you're in a rush or just expect to be in and out in under an hour, consider going elsewhere. My appointment was scheduled at 9am on a Sat. and I was seen right on time (I arrived 15 mins. early). My stylist was Luke, and she walked me through everything and wrote down what I was wanting to do! I've been going to Aveda in several locations over the years. I've had mostly positive experiences that's why I keep coming back. However, the Austin location was less than satisfactory. I know it's a school and the students are learning but the haircut I received was nothing like we discussed. The student went through photos and picked one that we both agreed on. It ended up being much shorter and nothing like the picture. I ended up liking the cut any way. The instructor had to step in quite a bit. She was not that great either. Very standoffish and uninvolved. I had set up a color appointment for the following week and stayed with the student. I don't know why. A couple of things happened. The same instructor overcharged me for services and then again student showed a picture. We agreed. Came out nothing like we had agreed on or anything close the picture. I had blonde hair to mid back. I wanted a shag with some low lights in red. I ended up with a kind of shag just at the top of my shoulders and brown hair with cherry cola highlights. I mean so close....but not. My suggestion for the student is stop using pictures if you can't get there with the cut and color. She needs more confidence and more interaction from instructor. The instructor seems to hate her job. The person at the check out was great. She looked at what they did with my hair color and fixed the price to reflect what was done, which was significantly lower. Thank you. I look at Aveda in general as a place to get good services cheaper. It's only hair and it will grow out. And it's always exciting to see what creative stuff someone is going to do. So not mad about the experience. Just a little disappointed in the way this one is run. There was no questionnaire at the end to evaluate the student or instructor. The vibe is dreary. My daughter (17) scheduled a full highlight and haircut. 1. She was told they would either have to reschedule or just have a partial 2. The girl that was doing them had never done highlights and left them process too long and then tried to fix it with toner. 3. The toner was strawberry which gave her uneven color... red in the back, strawberry blonde in the front. 4. She came home with toner on her scalp and sticky hair underneath from shampoo not washed off properly. 5. They were rushing because of the storm and treated her with zero respect. I had my hair color changed from instense red to rose with apricot highlights. The first stylist gave me a pretty color, but it was more red than rose, and the highlights were pretty subtle. I made an appointment in person at the school for a cut and color. When I arrived on Saturday, 7/26, they only had me scheduled for the cut and didn't have time to fix the person's mistake. The instructor had an 'oh well, can't help you' attitude. I came in with a picture of a style, shared what it was I liked about the cut, and was hoping to get. The student cutting my hair disappeared from the floor for an extended period of time due to illness. She cut the back of my hair, forgetting to cut the front, and asked if it was good. When I pointed out that she hadn't finished cutting, she finished cutting. I asked for additional layers/thinning, which she said she didn't know how to do. She brought over the instructor, who said I didn't need it and that the hair was good enough. The instructor was uninterested and unhelpful throughout the process. It was nothing like what I requested. I'm not stuck with an ugly page boy style haircut instead of the shag I requested. I am left feeling like I wasted my money, and this student didn't learn anything from the instructor or her behavior during my visit. I won't be returning to the Aveda Institute again based on my experience. I could have gotten a better haircut at Super Cuts. read more

I have come here several times and it PAINS me to write a bad review. I thought about it over and over, debated on it heavily and decided I'd share my experience. The first time I came here, I asked for a basic trim, deep conditioning and shampoo. Met Rai, who is as beautiful as she is warm and funny. I liked her so much that I began to come back regularly just to get my services from her. She highlighted my hair with golden blonde streaks, gave me a great face framing trim and provided warm conversation. Rai is 5+ stars. If you have curly, wavy or non straight hair like me, GO TO RAI. I have nothing but compliments for her. If she's not a master student yet, she will be soon. That's where my compliments end. I came here to get a curly perm. Spiral perm, as it's called. My hair is really easy to deal with, but it's a lot of hair. Setting it on the rods alone takes hours, styling school or not. I've been getting curly perms as my hair is a combo of wavy and curly, and the perms help unify my hair texture into my signature curls, keep my hair from being overly frizzy and if I ever wear it straight, makes it less of a nightmare to deal with as my hair is thick and luscious. I've done perms on myself, my mother has done them on me, I went to another school to get it done..never EVER had a bad result. Ever. In this case, I didn't get Rai when this happened, though I'm not sure if the result would have been any different. The appointment was at 2:30. I got a call to confirm a day before, and was there promptly, expecting to be there at least 4 hours. The student who did my hair was friendly, and I was seated next to another girl with much straighter hair getting a perm as well. So because I'd been here and the instructor, Holland, was talking them through it, I assumed I was in safe hands even though I was nervous. It took the young lady 3 hours just to get my hair on the rods. First red flag. But by then, I was invested, so I had no choice to sit there. I think Holland realized it was taking her too long, so he jumped in and was able to assist her with setting the rods. The solution was put on, and I went through the neutralizing process. Mind you, it's almost 7pm. By the time the rods were out, it was past 7:30. I was antsy to get going. I got no styling, no conditioning cream, nothing. But again, I was ready to go so I didn't press it. My hair was pretty wet when I left. However, when I got home...it dried and I caught a glance at myself in the mirror. Then, the crying started. My curls..were gone. I had a head full of highlighted, frizzy hair. My hair was fried. The next morning, I called the company and left a voicemail. That Sunday, I washed and deep conditioned my hair. Twice. Some of the frizz was gone, but it was definitely worse than it was before I got it done. Now, I have work Monday and I'm spending my Sunday trying to convince myself not to just chop all my hair off. I spent at least $40 on deep conditioning products, just so I could get it to a point where I could leave the house and not have my head in a shroud. Monday, someone from corporate calls me and tells me that I'll hear back from the school in two days. If they'd have said 'go there now', I'd have been open to revisiting the issue and trying to get something done there to fix it. Apparently their process is not to refund money, but to have the person come back to have their hair 'assessed' and some kind of treatment plan created. That's fine and all, but that's essentially four days from my appointment date. Four days where they don't know what I look like, so I could just be walking around toe-headed for FOUR DAYS. I don't know about you, but I don't want to be toe-headed for ONE day, much less FOUR. As a result, I missed a Yelp Elite event that I was really excited to go to. Now it's Wednesday night, and I've yet to hear from anyone. So Thursday will be SIX days. That's ridiculous and why I decided to write this review. At this point, I'll have spent $130 on this 'experience' and if I wanted to spend $130 on my hair, I'd have gone to a professional. I'm not happy. I'll recommend Rai until the last day she's there and even when she gets her license and is hired by a salon, but not this place in general. Their customer service model needs help, especially if they are less inclined to offer refunds or try to fix mistakes in a timely manner. At this rate, it'll be at least a week before I hear from them. I'm thisclose to calling my bank and getting the transaction reversed which is what I'll do if I don't hear from them by tomorrow with a refund. As it is, my hair now needs a major deep conditioning treatment, especially on its ends which are now split to holy hell...and I'll probably end up chopping it off anyway. It's disheartening and sad as I was trying to emulate Kelis in the 'Milkshake' video..and now I'm going to end up looking like Demi Moore in GI Jane. UPDATE: Tomorrow is Saturday. No word from Aveda. (0/5 stars). This was genuinely the WORST haircut of my entire life. Somehow A 3-INCH TRIM TOOK OVER 3.5 HOURS, AND A MASSIVE CHUNK OF MY HAIR IS MISSING IN THE FRONT. I had asked the hairdresser, Nalijah, to touch up my face framing layers and specifically said to make them subtle and blended to avoid it looking like blunt chunks of hair. You would think that this could easily be accomplished within 3.5 HOURS, but somehow I left with literally half of my hair missing on one side... DON'T TRUST THE FACT THAT THERE'S A "SUPERVISOR" TO INTERVENE when things go horribly wrong....The "supervisor" was somehow worse than Nalijah! When he stepped in to "help" I commented that it looked awfully short on the side he was continuously cutting, he claimed it was to "even it out"... keep in mind the other side was nowhere near as short and I now look like a barbie doll destroyed by a 4 year old. Not only was the haircut itself absolutely atrocious, the experience was my personal hellscape... Nalijah gave the impression that she had never touched scissors in her life, and was awkward and timid that it made the already anxiety inducing 3.5 hours in the chair exponentially worse. She was literally yawning and making comments that she was tired and even saying things like "huh I feel like I'm cutting too much"... okay then STOP!?!?!?! Keep in mind they're blaring heavy metal music throughout the salon to really add to the hellscape vibe. Not only did Nalijah and her "supervisor" ABSOLUTELY BUTCHER the simple ask of a 3 inch trim, she wasn't even capable of giving it a decent blow dry at the end to mask the horrible cut. My hair has never looked so frizzed up and insane, with half of my hair blown out (minus the giant missing chunk of course), and the other half dried naturally (wavy). I also just don't have frizzy hair so this was entirely her doing. When I commented about the frizziness, she wiped a huge glob of hair oil on the TOP OF MY HEAD and sent me on my way. I knew the haircut was atrocious because the lady at the checkout didn't even try to harass me for a tip at the end lol. Obviously I wasn't expecting greatness with this place, but I could have never predicted it would be this horrible. To summarize, I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy..... I don't understand how this is a teaching salon. I went with high hopes of having my hair bleached from Box dye, which they told me would not be a problem after they did a test strand. I came out bright red and asked the girl are you going to put a toner on it before you color it and she told me no "just trust the process!" I left looking like a pumpkin in October I called and complained they had me come in for two more sessions that I would be only charged app and they would do the same thing over and over, which makes no sense. Same thing happened the second time plus they chopped my hair to cut off the darker and it didn't fix that. She told me to wait two weeks, I'll never go back here n again I done know if they know how to do certain things. I understand the girls are students that are there and it's not all their fault. My hair appointment has been canceled two visits in a row. I was told the first time that several students just decided not to come in that day so there was nobody to service me. The next time (6 weeks later) was told the student ran over on her time and wouldn't have time to do my hair color. This has caused a major disruption in my life because it has interfered with my work schedule. If the students keep showing disrespect to their clients and there are consequences to the students because the director fails to enforce them, clients will stop making appointments which will lead to students not getting their hours and not graduating which means the staff will lose their jobs and the Austin location will have to shut down. When I first called the person the other end told me 55 for a foil hair color .ok I drive all excited an hour away and get there and check in and they all my name and next thing you know a different price . That's where I got so discouraged. Mind you not this is the first time I will have my hair done by another person I would say professional but not sure if that the accurate word at this point . I attended aveda arts from 11/16/24 to 7/26/2025 I stopped attending aveda arts due to lack of organization.. I found myself not knowing anything valuable for my state board test at the end of the 8 months i went. I had over 10 different teachers with in the 3 phases i went due to them not being able to stay staffed and the staff they did choose had little to no skill on teaching about cosmetology. About 3 of the 10 Teachers i came across were willing to teach and help learn skills as the other 7 were set on teaching one specific skill method they learned and only that one .. meaning that on state board test if it was not the technique that we were *specifically* supposed to learn for state board i'd fail .. multiple times i tried to go to higher up authorities id be shut down with saying they can't find other hires. we would get sent home if we were a single minute late but their sigh in door remained with a line and never was able to scan our fingerprints successfully the first time meaning we'd miss a whole 11 hour day due to that one minute rule and due to lack of clock in clocks.. we were only allowed to take clients when we arrived in phase 2 with about one learning day in every week .. i felt like going down to one learning day while taking clients was not at the right pace and i was rushed into taking clients so i'd sadly be messing their hair up and my instructor would come and not fix anything just say it looked good regardless if it was up to state board standards or if it was done completely wrong.. i deeply feel like i was falsely advertised behind this cosmetology school and me dropping out was from lack of knowledge after being there for so long i did not feel comfortable taking clients because i had little cosmetology skills but they proceeded to make me take clients and if we refused a single one we would get sent home .. i came into school with research and a lot of hopes i chose the right one , in the end im just stuck with loans and no extra knowledge besides what i came already knowing myself read more

I enjoyed my time and the setup seemed pretty modern and open. I do like the fact that they had a black girl come and kind of approve my hair, just because it does provide a level of comfort in the school. I just had the BEST 60 minute facial ever!! The salon was very clean and welcoming. This facial seemed like a professional visit to a big name salon! It was so relaxing, I may have drifted off into a little nap at some point!! Afterwards, I asked about eyebrow tinting, since I've never tried that. I recently got one of the best haircuts I've ever gotten! I really love going here because I'm usually just looking for a fresh cut and even with experienced hairdressers that I've previously visited I don't always get what I want. I chatted a bit with Kat about what I was looking for and got an a-line with choppy concave layers which even I didn't know how to ask for! It's *bleeping perfect! And of course you can't beat the price. If you're a perfectionist it's probably a no go but I've paid a lot more for less impressive haircuts over the years. read more

I was really scared to come here because I have had bad experiences with other salon schools in the past. Luckily, I just happened to get a student who was graduating that day and she was great. She was able to cut my hair as fast as a professional salon, and seemed very confident in her abilities. Since you don't know who you will get, your mileage may vary. I did like that the instructor checked in multiple times before she started touching my hair which made me feel at ease. It is a little unnerving to be in the space as a lot of the students who didn't have clients were loudly talking in the back and the person who cut my hair was talking to her friends the whole time, but for the price I can't really complain. I'd come back here again for a trim, but I'm not sure if I'd come for something more drastic. read more
