I had an amazing experience, my hairstylist, Riley L. worked magic on my hair. She paid extra attention to my concerns and questions, answering them with complete honesty. It really helped me be comfortable with going through with the highlights since i've had awful experiences with hair salons in the past. I usually get my haircut at chain stores, so I did something different today. Awesome experience. It's half the price of the cheapest chain stores, yet you get services they don't offer like a shampoo. The place gives off a fun and friendly vibe. It's clear the instructors and management treat their staff well. Leadership experts say doing that makes your employees transfer that joy to the customers. I'm also glad for the sake of the staff themselves. I'm not sure if the students want to keep their names private, so I won't share my stylist here, but she did an A grade job. She not only made me feel welcome and put extraordinary effort on my cut, she fascinated me by telling me all about what beauty school is like Unfortunately they don't take tips from cards, so I couldn't give my excellent stylist a tip. So I apologized to her for not bringing along cash. Next time I need to remember cash. I wanted a light blonde. I got a very dark reddish blonde that I have to have fixed elsewhere. I spent 3 hours in the sink them putting this that and the other trying to fix it and they never did. The instructor said "well, they are students learning after she did this and the student just smiled when asked for info. and instructor said after all that "it will lighten up at home as I wash it" and in fairness said she wasn't going to use my Groupon - I declined the offer and she didn't know that the idiot nail tech at the counter had already redeemed my Groupon. - I came in at 11am and finally got it blow dried at 2pm. Had to wait for someone to cut as we got off schedule with the color snafu. Next person was a sweet young woman who cut my hair, took way longer than I could stand. A DIRTY CIRCUS! The owner Wendi FOUND MY PHONE NUNBER AND TEXT MY PERSONAL PHONE photos posted) after I called the instructor Joe after my service and told her that I wanted a refund. Service: GROUPON FULL HIGHLIGHTS and TRIM. They don't tell you when booking their definition of a full HL is 25 foils WHAAAAAT. I was told in the DIRTY broken chair it would be $45 more for my all blonde inspo pic (full bright blonde.) The stylist struggled through the whole thing, placed dragging random foils with MAJOR gaps and a clowny money piece right in the front. Didn't check my foils, used half of the toner and then cut 4.5 INCHES OFF the bottom layer of my hair when we repeatedly said HALF AN INCH. The instructor Joe SAW THE CUT LINE AND DID NOT TELL ME!!! (more pics posted!). NO REFUND JUST EXCUSES! NO hot water. BROKEN shampoo bowls. DIRTY towels. DIRTY EVERYTHING! NO appropriate oversight from instructors as advertised. Joe said she could offer me a complimentary PEDICURE WTF. Laughable. My service was 9:30am-4pm yall. Here's my response to Queen Wendi's INAPPROPRIATE texts. "Wendy how dare you message a client to give me your stories and circumstances that have absolutely nothing to do with my hair and the service or atrocious experience I encountered. There is zero excuse for these results and my hair is RUINED and you are taking no accountability for the fact that Joe and my stylist dishonestly hid the mistakes done on my hair and you are petty enough to not return my money to me so I can pay a professional to correct my entire head of hair. Posting awareness and the TRUTHFUL results that I walked of your establishment is not a threat. No need to dramatize reviews on social media as "threats." The times have changed, is isn't 2002 anymore. A client is greatly dissatisfied and her hair is ruined and for you to be more concerned and try to guilt trip me about social media than to focus on a proper solution is ridiculous and I pity you. Received a pedi yesterday that was yet again, fabulous! I've been helped before by Mia, Savannah, and Ruby, and although enjoyable, alas, they've graduated by now. But yesterday I met Geo and had a wonderful experience. In addition to pleasant conversation and a thorough pedicure, per my request, Geo experimented w adding a small drawing on each of my lg. toes to commemorate a special trip in my near future. Geo demonstrated patience, skill, as well as perseverance as he charted new waters. The results were highly praised by all observers and I'm so proud. Geo encouraged me to try something new. First off this place is disgusting, they do not clean the floors and there are bugs in the products. The teachers do not make sure things are properly sterilized, and do not ensure students know what cross contamination is. The amount of times I've seen people double dip here is disgusting. Avoid at all costs getting a service here or becoming a student. Your teachers will not help you and instead will harass you about trivial things, really anything they can. On the coldest day of the year (17°F out) staff refused to let students clock in until they took off their jackets yet would not turn on the heat. Also if you show up 1 minute past 10 they will send you home, yes even though you pay to be there! Becoming a student here has been one of my biggest mistakes. Yeah it's half the cost of other beauty schools in austin but I'm here to say it comes with a different cost and if I could go back in time and go literally anywhere else I would. This school is advertised as being a dermalogica school yet there's a locked closet full of products we (students) are not allowed to use or we will be reprimanded. Speaking of reprimanding, the owners will do their best to talk you into signing up for cosmetology (even if you just want to do esthetics or nails) by telling you you will have an even amount of hair skin and nails, then when you go to the other sides of the school (skin/nails) the teachers will ask you where you're supposed to be instead of encouraging you to learn! Coincidentally the cosmo course is the longest course. They only do it not because they care what you do but so they get a bigger check! There are no water fountains, 3 gross bathrooms, and consistently cockroaches scurrying around. There's leaky roofs, no pedicure chairs, and a hostile staff. I really like how my hair turned out. It took longer than expected but it was a student so I forgive that part. The part I did not care for was how lax they are on masks. Joanna the teacher never wore a mask in the almost 5 hours I was there. In that time she put her hands on clients and stood instructing in very crowded groups of people. Absolutely no social distancing to compensate for the lack of mask. I saw several students walking around without masks and most of the girls had them down past their nose. Whether we want it or not we are living through an active pandemic. I want to go to a place that takes it seriously. I'm not sure if I will be back until they up their safety protocols. read more

Fuck no. I called to try and make an appointment, but I was only able to leave a voicemail. I later got a text from Wendi Baldwin telling me that they are primarily walk-ins only. She asked what campus I was closest to and I said the north campus and that I was wanting partial highlights and a cut. She ended up setting up an appointment for me on 4/28 at 10:00 am. I arrive for my appointment and they have no record of it. I tell the lady I wanted partial highlights, a cut, and blow dry style. She asked me if I had my groupon. I said, no, I didn't know there was a groupon..? She goes, "Oh, that's ok. That's good. We prefer people don't use them anyway." Um, ok? She was able to immediately seat me with a girl wearing a name tag that said she had 1,000+ hours of experience, so I was feeling pretty confident. I showed the stylist the colors I wanted, a mix of red and gold and she got to work eventually--she seemed to take forever to get the color ready and yes, I said color, because that's all she came back with--one color. I was trying to hide the panic on my face as she's putting this color in my hair and repeatedly saying the word "blonde" and I'm debating if I should say something. Then she starts talking about a caramel cherry color toner or something to that effect, so I calmed down. At some point the instructor walks by to give me the bill, which was for highlights and shampoo/blow dry only. I told her I wanted a cut as well and the stylist says, "I wish you would have told me that before we started on the color! I would've done that first so we wouldn't be cutting off your pretty highlights!" which is stylist speak for "we're too cheap to waste any amount of color that we might be cutting off your head." She asked how much I was wanting cut off and I said 1 or 2 inches. She seemed relieved that I wasn't looking for anything major. Time is money, after all. She's putting my hair in foils, but by the time she gets done, the ones she started with first are ready. She starts taking those out and squirting my hair with a water bottle. I was trying to come up with a polite way to ask wtf she was doing. The best I came up with was, "So...what does the water do exactly?" She said something about those pieces being ready and she wanted me to have "even coverage, even colored highlights," which was a phrase used more than once and took away a big chunk of my confidence in her with every utterance. She takes me back to wash my hair and put the toner in that she swears is gorgeous and perfect. She again asks how much I want cut off. At this point, I've been there for hours. Yes, literally hours, so I change my 1-2 inches to 1 inch. I get back to the seat and say, "Wow. My hair is really light." She says, "Well, let me blow dry it a little first. You can never tell until after you blow dry it. So, half an inch off, right?" I agree because I'm so sick of being there. She blow dries a section. I hate it. She says ok, I can use a darker toner on you. She was really nice about it to my face, but I'm pretty sure she was annoyed that she had to spend more time on my hair after giving me what I didn't ask for. She puts a darker toner in my hair and occasionally gets it on my face. I'm doing my best to wipe it up with the nylon cape. She asks what I'm doing and I tell her some toner got on my face and I'm just wiping it up. She says, oh, don't worry about that! The toner washes off really easily. Oh, ok. I sit back and stop worrying about it. We head back to her station and she starts blow drying my hair. At this point, I'm tired of her and everyone associated with the place and she's tired of styling the hair of someone who's not happy just being a blonde. She really didn't care what I thought about the do-over. It was just kind of like, there you go, all better. And it was better, but that isn't saying much. She reassured me that the color would lighten up within a few weeks, which was just wonderful because it was still too light. I also sat there staring in the mirror at the pink stain the toner had left behind on my skin. That "easy to wash off" toner that I "didn't need to worry about" that she was aware was being slopped onto my face. I only felt somewhat comfortable going here because I had heard that the instructor had to check on everything first. I knew this would add time to the appointment and I was fine with that, but literally the only time I heard the instructor speak was when she dropped off the bill. I was still there for 3 hours. The only positive that came out of this experience is that the stylist informed me of the groupon that they didn't want me using and it saved me a lot of money. By the way, I asked her when she would be graduating and she said in about 3 weeks. Lord help us all. I only went to this place because my regular stylist just had a baby. Now taking suggestions on good box coloring. Thank God I work from home. read more

I have been going to Baldwin for many years. My daughter-in-law graduated from there. I've always been pleased with my pedicures. However, I made an appointment (yes, they require appointments now) for a pedicure today. I had requested a 2:30 appointment but was told 2pm was the latest appointment they took for pedicure. No problem. I arranged my schedule around this specific time. I arrived a few minutes early and saw that all the chairs were full. Half of them were students getting pedicures. Imagine my surprise when I was told it would be at least a 20 min. wait while the students finished their pedicures. This was so unprofessional. I get it that these are students learning and practicing on each other, but why then do they require appointments if they don't honor them? I am so, so disappointed in their lack of attention to their policies. read more

My review is specific to the nail services at BBS (North Austin location). I have gone 3 times now to get my nails done -- always for gel polish. The first experience was a good one, with 2 students working on me who were able to ask each other questions and some teacher supervision. This polish lasted about 10 days, which I am told is typical. The second experience was terrible and the teacher (I think her name was Marley?) was not watching over the student at all and she clearly missed a few steps. My manicure was ruined within less than 24 hours (by which point I was on my way on vacation). I took photos of the manicure at less than 24 hours and at 3 days since I was out of town which showed that whole fingertips of polish had come off. When I came back and told Molly (the nail teacher sub) what had happened and showered her photos, she was unwilling to refund me and offered to let me get my nails redone for a discount ($10 instead of $17) even though the other teacher who knew me said it should be comped. This student was much more thorough than the previous one, and took important steps that are apparently required so that the gel polish lasts -- for example, she filed each of my nails to remove oils and ensure that the polish had something to "hold onto." Again though, no one was watching over her the entire time, so we'll see if this manicure holds up and recommend people be weary about getting their nails done at this location. You may be better off paying full-price at a regular salon to get consistency. By contrast, I've gotten my hair done several times and never had a bad experience -- I highly recommend going to BBS for your hair. (I've had 2 cuts, a single process color, and a balayage, and plan to go back for another cut and single process color at the end of this month!). I've been here twice and had such an amazing experience both times! The first time I went in for a balayage and a trim, and my most recent visit was for a cut! The receptionist greets you with a warm welcome smile and makes you feel comfortable. Both the young students I've had were super sweet and kind. They were both a little nervous, as most of us were at the start of our career, but the instructor comes by very often to hear their plan, make suggestions, and confirm that they are doing a great job. I love seeing the look of pride on their faces when they are finished with my hair. Ive been extremely pleased both times! The instructors are fabulous as well! I attended Baldwin's north campus for the Cosmetology program. You will need to take initiative and keep good study habits. The owners really do care about each of their students. Wendi Baldwin takes a real interest in each and every student's success. Randy Baldwin keeps a good eye on what we needed as well. Example:I was a brand new student and felt like a "nobody" compared to the whole hustle and bustle of it all. Randy went out of his way to know my name and that I needed a name tag. A simple little gesture:yes, but to be made aware that the heads of the program care enough about minute details that make you part of the program was all I needed to feel like "someone". Another example: A room full of Stage 1 students (myself included) were feeling a bit overwhelmed. Wendi took hours out of her day to put our hearts and heads in the right place. I want to address negative feedback about the school. It's all what YOU make it. This program is affordable and the school is suited with great staff that really care. It's important to remember that the people cutting your hair are students. They're learning the craft and you are helping them by being there. Once you get your head over that hurdle and realize that it may take a bit longer than normal, it's a fun experience. I got my hair did for 7$ and it looks just as good as the previous cuts I got from more expensive, trendy spots. The clientele is predominantly elderly. I could tell that my stylist was excited to have somebody a bit younger and more adventurous to deal with. If you're worried about getting a bad cut, don't be. You can always have the head stylist (teacher?) check your cut. I felt a bit rude doing this the first time, but I soon realized that it was only helping my stylist get better. I'm a dude but I am actually very particular in how I like my hair cut. Bottom line: it's super-cheap and you're helping out the students by being there. I'm not about to stop going here, but my overpowering urge for truth compels me to give full disclosure of a dramatic event with staggering implications: Their price for a basic men's haircut has skyrocketed by over 40%!!! That's right, skyrocketed... to a cool $10. So it's still one of the best deals in town. I've had some irritants over the past few visits, like that sometimes the stylists want to fuss over every single individual hair on my head instead of just cutting the damn stuff and letting me get on with my day. That matters if you go at lunch, which you have to since they're not open on the weekends, and 4pm is basically the latest you can show up and still be seen even if they're actually open until 5pm. Still, better too much care than too little, and even with this dramatic, unprecedented, astronomical price hike it's worth every penny. The stylists are also usually fun to chat with about where they are in their training, what their plans are, etc., so you have something to do while they hand cut every single strand of your coiffure.
