My wife and I ate here during our brief stay at the JW during our DC trip. The food was good and the service was prompt. Our coffees and waters never went dry during our meal. We both had the buffet, while a bit pricey, it was very good. I had an omelette made fresh and the chicken apple sausages. The kids were hungry so we opted to stay in the hotel for dinner. The kids menu was actually fine. And we loved the choice to mix and match. Now the service. The hostess told us that we had to wait outside because there were a lot of names in front of us, and the waiters were too busy. The place was more than half deserted!! The wait staff, it took us a few asks to get water. Then the food. We got crab cakes and swordfish. The crab cakes were flavorless and the swordfish was rubbery. I understand that restaurants nearby ask for much more for similar entrees when presented on the menu, but their qualities are definitely so much better. I loved this place. We couldn't find anywhere to eat that wasn't packed or needed a reservation so we took a chance and went here. It wasn't busy at all and we were starving so we tried it out. Some of the things are a bit expensive but I thought it was worth it. I had the corn and crab chowder and it was delicious. I would order it again in a heartbeat. I also had the cornbread which was also delicious. My friend had a burger and fries and he thoroughly enjoyed them. I stole one of his fries and they were nice and peppery and yummy. They have a bar there as well and the waiters will bring you something from there if you'd like. I got a Long Island iced tea and it was strrroooooong (stronger than they usually are). But that was good since that means they don't water anything down. If I visit DC again I'd like to eat here a second time. read more

there is a distinct lack of dining options in this area of town - so, we wound up here (mostly, because I had a gift card good for Marriott franchises). not spectacular, but solid and better than I expected for a hotel restaurant. lunch prices are okay, but the portions were respectable and the quality was actually pretty good, so it all balances out. the triple decker BLT hit the spot, and the homemade chips were nice and crispy. I ordered a sazerac which was made quite well, and also served to round out our bill to be completely covered by the gift card! service was very nice and helpful. granted, it was around 3 when we got here and it was almost empty. I wouldn't call it a destination, but if you're in this neck of DC and need a bite to eat but don't wanna tolerate the mob scene in the museums, keep Avenue Grill in mind. read more

I met some friends here for lunch in between meetings at the JW Marriott this week. Nothing special about this place other than the convenient location if attending meetings in the hotel. The service was ok, but not very attentive and the food was decent - again, nothing out of this world. This is not a place you seek out, but rather eat here out of convenience. read more

The bread basket and tuna steaks were delicious. The dessert? Not so much. The peach cobbler was supposed to have melted dark chocolate on the plate, but the chef put on balsamic vinegar instead! The people who work here are amazing! From our initial phone call, to the wait staff, to the chef -- we were impressed! Now, this is not a super upscale restaurant in the traditional sense, however, the food arrived quickly, it was hot ,and the menu included some unique offerings. A small lounge-type restaurant (part of the JW Marriott hotel) conveniently situated next door to the National Theatre. Let me emphasize that the restaurant is VERY small so I would not recommend it for large groups, it seems like the type of place that would be best for a quick drink and small meal with a coworker or business client, nothing overly special or unique about this place, it definetly lacks personality and vibrance. The beer selection is horrible, but maybe thats just me as I normally prefer more of a selection when it comes to beer. The food is decent but nothing to really write home about, once again, nothing overly special or creative. The server was attentive but somewhat overly aggressive to the point that it was quickly noticed by everyone in my party. Now I feel like im turning this into a list so I will leave it here.. Sat down and ordered hot tea...asked waitress about soup special...she didn't know. She came back a few minutes later and as she rubbed her hands over her face and hair she said, "I think it's crab and asparagus". I asked, "you think"? Because this restaurant is located in a posh hotel, it was a little pricey. Dinner for two came out to $70+. However, the food was very good, and the service was outstanding. Our water was SO happy that he made us smile every time he came to the table. Also, the meal started off with a little basket of assorted breads and ended with a bowl of warm water with lime to clean your hands, which were both nice touches. Ended up here on a Wednesday evening when everything else comparable was overbooked. Was initially disappointed to find that it was a hotel restaurant, but left very pleased. It was quiet, staff was attentive and the food was really good. I had friends in from out of town and we were able to enjoy a nice conversation without screaming like we would have at Old Ebbitt Grill which we tried to go to first. leftovers were packed like a gourmet meal with high end accoutrements (I.e. napkins and faux silver cutlery and a black gift bag). I had the crab mac & cheese, and although it made me sick from the richness and dairy overload, was delicious and my fault for not taking my enzymes. What was called a "small plate" was enough for two full dinners for me. We were staying in the hotel and it was so hot outside we decided to take a break and just eat here for lunch. As a general comment, the food is good and about what you would expect from a chain family dining place. Hands down, the best dish we had was the lobster mac-n-cheese. For $21, the dish was excellent and loaded with really good lobster. My wife had the Grown Up Toasted Cheese which we both agreed was very good. The "tomato soup" it is served with is more like a marinara and it was not a perfect match. I had the turkey club which I would describe as a normal turkey club. Good but nothing to write home about. As many reviewers mention, there does not seem to be much around here. There is a Corner bakery just north of the hotel which is probably as good for 1/3 of the price. read more

I came here after an event on the Mall and was not disappointed. I was part of a large group (16), and they set up our table right away in a private section of the restaurant. The restaurant had an accessible entrance right next to our section, too, which is important because otherwise there'd only be stairs. The cheeseburger was tasty-- and huge. Lobster mac and cheese was delicious. I didn't try anything else, but there were happy faces all around the table. Great location if you're downtown or sightseeing. Horrible. We had a 6:30 reservation and told them we had theater tickets for 8:00. After repeatedly asking where the food was, it arrived at 7:30. The fried chicken dish contained one drumstick, one wing, and a piece of breading with no meat. The scallop dish contained no scallops. Both of these entres are over $20. Asked to speak to the manager, who never came. At 7:45 we walked out. J.W. Marriott should be ashamed to have this place in their hotel. read more

The lobster Mac and cheese is the best ever. The sauce is delicious and the portions of lobster are generous. I can't say the same of everything here, but this is my second mac and cheese and I will eat here one more time before leaving DC. I can't get enough! We reserved a table here weeks in advance through Opentable for the 4th of July. Just hours before our dining time, the restaurant cancelled our booking. They made no effort to inform us of this. We only discovered this when we went on to Opentable to confirm the booking and saw it had disappeared that morning. We called the restaurant, and they said that they were not accepting reservations that day (even though they had already accepted ours weeks prior). This is entirely unprofessional and unacceptable. If they were not going to accept reservations, they should have blocked off the day (they knew the 4th of July was coming, didn't they?). Once they accepted my reservation, they should have honored it. What a joke. read more

I had to stay at the JW Marriott for a week on Business. Work was rough and tiring and I like usually like the hotel dining experience. I do not mind the price if the food is worth it. The first night, I got a black angus with creamed spinach, salad and wine. Salad was great, steak was miniscule and salty and spinach was laden with cheese. I though it was a miss. I ordered in.. The burger was so salty, it was not edible. Last night, I ordered chicken wings (looked great) black angus steak ( hockey puck so much salt my head swelled and fish the size of my two fingers. $130.00. Okay I give up. Awful. Missing hostess should have been a sign. One hour from order to food delivery, which was cold and mediocre. Saw the server exactly twice so forget about drinks. Had to walk the check to the front to pay the manager. On the lighter side, one waiter tried to deliver someone else's order while we were leaving, and proceeded to yell to a famished waiting crowd to see whose it was. Ordered drinks when the hostess resealed me and dinner when she brought them. Waiter came with the dinner and an attitude about a wrong table number. Server finally showed up.
