Le Diplomate... it doesn't need another review, but here's my 2 cents. It's a solid, approachable, crowd-pleasing mainstay of the DC dining scene. I've been a few times over the years, and here are some notes from my most recent visit. I got a last minute reservation for 4 people at 7 PM on a Sunday, thanks to Resy notifications. They sat us in the back, which is not the best seating area, but sometimes you take what you can get. The back area is not the most spacious or prettiest area. I sampled a carafe of red wine, a cheese plate, the delicious (free) bread basket, the black bass grenobloise, and trout amandine. The carafe was perfectly fine; I'm not into wine enough to judge. The cheese plate ($6.5 per piece) was an okay size and came with some honey, jam, marcona almonds, and four slices of bread -- the bread was different from the white and cranberry-walnut in the main bread basket; this one was a smaller loaf, sliced thin, with some grains and apricot (?) in it. There are apparently 11 different cheeses to pick from, which the waiter had to recite to us. A small, printed cheese menu would be welcome here. We only heard about 5 of the cheeses before we decided to just pick some, because who wants to listen -- and remember -- the spiels about 11 different cheeses? The Black Bass Grenobloise ($34) had pomme puree, capers, and lemon. It was ok but I preferred the trout. The Trout Amandine ($36) had toasted almonds (lots), haricots verts, lemon brown butter. It was a classic rendition and it was great. Service was friendly, if a little slow.
Grabbed a late night "snack" and wine, walked in and were sat almost immediately. Staff was great, very helpful and knowledgeable. The food was so fresh and tasteful, we had the steak tartare, pate champagne and half dozen oysters (very fresh). Good bottle of wine, fairly priced ($55). The restaurant is beautiful, great music and way bigger than expected. It doesn't feel crowded, honestly even with so many people it still felt very intimate. I would say this is great for a girls night or date night.
PSA: I was solely influenced by a picture of the Burger and yes it was the best Burger I have had in DC! First off - went there to close out my birthday celebration, and was not disappointed! From the service to the seating - 10/10. Super cute/ Aesthetically pleasing vibe perfect for photos! Let's talk about the burger. The bun breathtaking. The burger itself- perfection. I truly don't have much more to say other than that if you don't see anything else on the menu, you might like go for the burger you won't be disappointed! Everything else was also amazing, great oysters and the appetizers were on point! But again / just go get that cheeseburger !
This place is a must. The trout amandine was my favorite: the crispy skin, buttery and flaky. Escargot came sizzling in garlic herb butter (great with the bread basket), and the steak was tender and flavorful with a peppercorn sauce. Service was solid, vibe was lively. Pricey but worth it! We definitely coming back
Le Diplomate always goes above and beyond. The service was top tier, and very responsive. I sat on the patio, so I was able to enjoy outdoor festivities on 14th Street while Al's drinking a frozen rose. The Ricotta Ravioli was so delicious, I only wish that more than four was provided. Will definitely return. A must visit if you find yourself near U Street or 14th Street.
One of the famous establishments in Washington D.C. so I had to try it! I booked a reservation and got seated immediately. The restaurant is lively and the decor is very welcoming. The waiters and staff are attentive and it made the experience good. Food: - The bread was delicious. Soft, pillowy, and they offered three different varieties. - French onion soup: 4/5, the soup is really close to what I've had in France so this was a good start! The cheese is thick and the bread soaks up all of the flavor of the soup. The soup was very warming and cozy. - Steak frites: 3/5, the steak was overcooked unfortunately. But the flavor was great. The frites were great.
The French onion soup was most excellent and the bread pieces inside soaked in the best flavors. The salmon tartare was great and the crisp greens accompanying it were a perfect serving vessel for it. The crème brûlée was perfect and the scallop risotto came with large scallops quartered to make it more bite sized and manageable. So glad I returned to this spot I had a chance to check out in March.
Another great experience last night on an exceptionally busy summer Saturday. Service is typically always reliable though our server yesterday was particularly professional, warm, and understated. To switch things up, we did skip the escargot though after some misses at other spots recently, Le Dip is the only place in the area where I will continue to order. The tuna carpaccio was light and bright and the crispy artichokes were fantastic. Next time we'll add the escargot back into rotation and share a steak au poivre, which my husband had last night. We did after dinner drinks to round it out: amaro and ratafia, and we never felt rushed to finish up. The summer vibes were high and everyone was out - dates, groups, and families alike.
Had another fantastic meal at Le Diplomate! My friend ordered the beef bourguignon, and I had the steak frites. Both dishes were absolutely delicious. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately!), we filled up on their incredible homemade bread, so neither of us could finish our entrées. We somehow managed to save room for dessert, though. I ordered the profiteroles--which, honestly, are one of the main reasons I keep coming back. They are that good! My friend had the crème au chocolat, which was also outstanding. Our waiter, Yassine, was attentive, friendly, and provided excellent service throughout the meal. I also want to recognize a waitress named Ellie, who was serving the table next to us. She had the misfortune of dealing with an incredibly rude and abusive couple, yet she handled the situation with remarkable professionalism, patience, and grace. It was impressive to watch, and I hope the restaurant knows what a great employee they have. Great food, great service, and another wonderful dining experience. I can't wait to come back!
Quite a famous and historic restaurant. In DC, so let's try it. It definitely stands out as you approach it and you enter a very happening bar area. Very loud and electric atmosphere. They have a nice selection of cocktails and beer. The salade verte was artistically presented with radishes and a nice vinaigrette. It was topped with green beans which seemed a tad odd. French onion soup was a must try. It had a nice cheesy crust and croutons soaked in the soup. So classic and very tasty. The steak frites was also classic. The frites were tasty and crispy and the steak was cooked well. The steak was slightly small. The roasted salmon was cooked perfectly--very moist and a crisp skin. The fava beans and pea sauce was very creamy. The trout amandine was also cooked well with crispy skin. FYI It is cooked in a ton of butter. We did not order any of the dishes suggested by our waiter LOL, he steered us to the most expensive entrees. His service was quite good, perhaps a tiny bit snooty.

Pablo took amazing care of us, super kind, knowledgeable, and his recommendations were spot on. I got the Kir 75, a mix between a Kir Royale and a French 75, and it was SO good. One of my coworkers and I shared the warm shrimp salad and the steak frites, both delicious. The kitchen even split the dishes for us beforehand which was such a nice touch. Also, the bread basket while you wait? Dangerous levels of good. Definitely coming back next time I'm in DC.

I was a solo diner and felt perfectly cared for. The food came out in a timely manner, I was not rushed, and was so happy with the quality of the food, especially given the price. The soup was unique and creamy, with a nice rustic but delicate flavor. The artichokes were perfectly crispy and so light! The aioli it came with was spot on. The fries were crispy and thin, a classic fry but cannot go wrong. One of the stars though, which is unexpected, was the free bread basket?! There was a cranberry nut bread and it was unlike anything I've ever had. Sweet and perfect with some salted butter. Not to mention, all the bread was so soft and fresh! The inside is quite large and busy, so I would recommend a reservation. The inside is beautiful and the interior decor really accentuates the French aesthetic. Truly a gem and happy to add one of their complimentary matchbooks to my collection.

Everything in this space is the greatest representation of hospitality I've ever experienced. It's all so carefully thought through. From the bread to the decorum to the cocktails to the warmth you feel as soon as you walk in. It's unmatched. The Mushroom Tart is perfection. The Foie Gra brings an actual tear to my eye. Pick an item on the menu and I would gladly order it as my last meal. As someone in the industry it's places like this that make me proud to be apart of it and the ENTIRE staff of Le Diplomate deserves a damn Nobel Peace Prize. read more
Great experience here and didn't realize just how popular this place was! My pro tip is looking out for a reservation weeks in advance to make sure you get the prime time a lot you're looking for. Luckily I was able to get a table for 6 around late dinner time. Starting off with the food, everyone at my table enjoyed their meal. Simple, fresh, yet flavorful at the same time. Which I find to be the case with good French food. I personally had the mussels and fries and in a sucker for those shoestring fries so much so I finished the whole plate . The mussels were so delicious, I'm craving more as I type. Ambiance wise, it can get pretty loud inside so prepare to talk loudly. Besides that, the aesthetic inside was gorgeous and eclectic! read more

Loved this spot! Open late (midnight) and definitely serving up French vibes! Friendly hostess, seated immediately on a Friday night, and sat on the outdoor patio for people-watching. We had already eaten some stuff earlier so we went with a shrimp cocktail, green salad and fries. My husband ordered coffee which was delicious and piping hot. We also ordered a Pot de Crème but after waiting 20 minutes for it we just asked for the check. Service was slow and not attentive. Felt like being in France. lol. We would still come back. read more

Finally made it to Le Dip! We swung by during the pride parade for a quick snack. We did not have a res but were able to be seated within a few minutes around 4pm! Our server was very attentive and timely. We got a few things to share including the famous bread basket, gougeres, and pommes frites. The bread included the brown bread, a sourdough, and baguette. I found the first two to be a little dense and chewier than I liked but the flavors were great. The frites were also delish, hard to go wrong! The gougeres were a really light cheese puff with a really airy texture! Reminded me of a Brazilian pao de queijo. The entrees are definitely priced higher since this is such a touristy spot, but overall would come back to try more! read more
Great place. Dinner was amazing. The restaurant was vibrant, the decor was beautiful. We ordered the French onion soup. It was delicious, rich and cheesy. My husband had the steak & frites and I tried the grilled Branzino. The steak was perfectly cooked medium rare and my fish was full of flavor and cooked perfectly with a crispy skin. Drinks were great and our sever George was courteous and attentive. I would definitely come again. read more
Walking into the restaurant - i thought I was stepping into a Skittles "taste the rainbow" commercial - but the vibe of this place is bright and the charcuterie and cheese plate was just as colorful here. Friendly staff plus don't miss the decor of the men's room! Fun visit. read more

I love how the areas of the restaurant has a different vibe like the green room area vs the main area everyone eats at and the outdoor space that gives cafes style similar to paris. I highly recommend you won't disappointed. Best solo date. Iconic DC restaurant with a beautiful ambiance and decent brunch! I've been coming to Le Dip for years and the quality and service is always very consistent! I don't think their brunch is the best in the city, but their bread basket (don't miss the cranberry slice) and espresso martinis will always be legendary. For brunch this time, I ordered the Gruyère Omelet. Simple and did the job! Loved the crispy potato's on the side. read more
It was our first time at Le Diplomate and the restaurant is quaint, with a rustic French charm. Initially, the service was super slow and it felt like 15 minutes went by without a greeting from our waiter or any water. However, this got better later on and our waiter eventually became very attentive. We ordered the escargot, which paired really well with the complimentary bread especially if you spread out the garlic butter too. I ordered the mussels as my main entree and my husband ordered the warm shrimp salad. For $27, it was a great deal as my plate of mussels was loaded - I shared a lot of them with my husband but still felt very full! The mussels also came with a side of fries that were nicely thin and crispy. Overall, a little pricey, but a good experience and I recommend stopping by if you're in the DC area. read more

In town for business and heard great things about this place. You'll need reservations because it's so popular but do make a plan to visit! We started with the tuna carpaccio, the cheese plate and the escargot. The escargot was delicious it was my first time trying it. We ordered the roasted scallop risotto, duck Ala orange, and mussels! Le Diplomate delivered a fantastic brunch experience and easily earned 5 stars from me. The service was attentive and fast, and every dish we ordered was well executed. The cold brew was fine, but it was probably the only thing that didn't fully land for me. I prefer my cold brew very strong and bitter, and this one was a bit milder than my ideal. Still solid, just not a standout based on my personal preference. The Kir 75, on the other hand, was excellent. It was bright, refreshing, and very well made. Both pastries were fantastic. The chocolate croissant had a beautifully flaky exterior, while the inside stayed soft, rich, and chocolatey. The kouign amann was equally delicious, with the kind of flaky, crunchy texture that makes it hard to stop eating. The Gruyère omelette was another highlight. The cheese was melty and creamy without overpowering the dish, and the herbs kept everything balanced. The roasted potatoes on the side were also very well done. The burger stole the show for me. The house-made brioche bun was toasted perfectly--firm enough to hold together a rich double-patty cheeseburger without getting soggy or falling apart. The beef blend had just the right amount of fat to bring a lot of flavor, and the whole thing felt indulgent in the best way. Overall, Le Diplomate delivered excellent food, great service, and a brunch that absolutely lived up to the hype. read more

Le Diplomate is one of the best restaurants I've been to in DC. The staff was very kind. Part of our party got stuck in horrendous traffic, and the waiter let us hold the table until they got there. Everything we ordered was fantastic, but the highlights were the steak frites and the Duck à L'Orange. Steak had a great sear. If you're looking for a good appetizer, I highly recommend the Crispy Artichokes or the Escargots à la Bourguignon. They had a lovely selection of red and white wine, along with a delicious cocktail menu. The Romarin was my favorite cocktail. The waiter said the Kir 75 is the sweetest drink on the menu. Le Diplomate is a great date spot! The interior is classy and sophisticated. read more

Second time here. Food was great and so was service, tried the burger for the first time. I liked it but I liked the steak frites more from last time. Only feedback was long wait time for bathrooms, seems like they need more. Went twice and both times had to wait 5+ minutes. read more

I went on a very crowded Saturday. I was running late but the hostess was gracious enough to let us keep our reservation after I called to ask for more time. Our food was really good. I only gave 4 instead of 5 stars because I didn't like that we were seated inside and they sat a woman near us that had a dog. The dog was sitting in its own chair. Not the most sanitary- would have left if I had not already ordered my food. read more
It's consistently good. The atmosphere is great. I love coming to Le Diplomate during the holidays for the interior feel. Good lighting and just a busy environment all around. The food is consistently good. They start off with a bread basket of fresh bread. It is an assortment of bread, like a cranberry bread for example, with a butter that is real smooth. I got the Steak Au Poivre and it was so good. It is in a gravy like peppercorn sauce that is the right level of salt. The steak was moist and cooked to a perfect medium. It also comes with a spinach that is the bomb! My wife got a special fish, I believe it was Bass? Was very good and soft! Everything was seasoned well. Le Dip is always good. Had a lovely birthday brunch here and the food was really good. It was busy, so service was kind of slow, but understandable. I had the French omelette which was soft and delicate but full of herby goodness. My cousin and shared the French toast because who doesn't want sweet and savory at the same time. The potatoes were a bit overcooked but nothing some hot sauce and ketchup couldn't fix. Cocktails were solid as is the wine list. We went to Le Diplomate on Sunday for dinner. Reservations were completely booked (which we expected), but we decided to pop in anyway to see if we could grab a drink or possibly get seated. They quoted us a 30-minute wait, but it ended up being closer to 10 minutes, which was a pleasant surprise. The food, as always, was excellent. I ordered the steak au poivre -- one of my favorites -- and it did not disappoint. The sauce is absolutely incredible and so flavorful. We also tried the crispy artichoke appetizer, which was new for us and really delicious, along with the French onion soup, which I typically love. The only downside this visit was the service. I completely understand they were busy, but our server didn't mention any specials or make recommendations, which felt a bit unlike the usually polished experience here. The biggest issue was that when we each ordered our own appetizer, the waiter decided to split the French onion soup without asking. We hadn't indicated we were sharing, and splitting it unfortunately ruined the presentation -- we ended up with two half-filled bowls without the classic fully crisped cheese top we had requested. It definitely took away from one of my favorite dishes. When we later ordered the steak, we made sure to clarify not to split it. Overall, I'll absolutely be back. The food remains fantastic, and we've typically had wonderful service here -- this just wasn't their strongest night on that front. read more

Social distancing in place for outside seating?
No masking is required in DC. Required social distancing is highly unlikely.
I know it says no dogs allowed, but I see pictures from years ago with dogs on the patios. Do they still allow that?
I believe that all dogs are still allowed outside, but only service dogs inside. Suggest calling 1st to prevent any problems.
Is this a restaurant we'd have to dress up for?
The best of both worlds-You can dress up or dress casual. My boyfriend and I have done it both ways the two times we've been there. It's always a nice mix.
Is this restaurant kid-friendly?
During my visit there were a few families and the children were all prob 10ish and up.

There's a public parking lot on S & 14th Street NW that you can pay to park at. There is also a Whole Foods parking garage at P & 15th Street NW that you can pay to park in.

I think that there's no guarantee that you'll find a seat, but if you are willing to try go for it. Otherwise, just make a reservation nearby like at Matchbox as Plan B.

You can but it will be difficult and there will be a wait!
