The recommendation to pair the honey with the cheese on the biscuits was excellent and took an already great item to another level. The broccolini, coffee, and espresso shot were not our favorites of the evening, but honestly, the other dishes were so good that we quickly forgot about them. Finally got to check out St. Anselm and it did not disappoint! It's a cool vibe for dinner with friends or even a date night. The staff are super attentive to everything going on. They made sure to keep our table clean and gave us new silverware and plates before or entrees arrived. Any food that we did not finish was boxed up and put into bags for us. The manager was actively walking around the restaurant, making sure that every guest were enjoying their dinner. The food was good all around but there are some dishes that outshine the rest. The ribeye and New York strip were very good. The butchers steak I got for my son and he didn't really like it, it was lacking flavor. If you do anything when you go, please make sure to get the biscuits. Hands down THE BEST BISCUITS I've ever had lol. They are the most flaky and buttery biscuits, you can count each layer that these have. Pro tip is to ask for butter and the house made jam. Started my Saturday here for brunch and it did not disappoint. St. Anselm in the Union Market and is a Americana decor lodge restaurant where every wall and space is fun convo starter. My friend made reservations for us at 12pm and we had an amazing server, who offered friendly and funny banter. He ordered a bloody Mary and I had their espresso martini with Bailey's and it was pretty good. For starters, we had their blue crab deviled eggs which were hearty but needed a little more seasoning. We did get a side of smoked paprika which did help. For our main, I had the huevo rancheros with a side a hashbrowns. It was tostada with avocado, sunny side egg, cheese, and a salsa. I did add some hot sauce to kick it up and it was really good. The crispy tostada did not get soggy from the salsa which was nice and I see why it's a recommended weekend brunch dish. Great time at St Anselm! My friend and I tried a number of dishes and everything was tasty. Started with the famous buttermilk biscuits with pimento cheese as well as butter/jam and the blue crab deviled eggs. My main was the salmon collar with a side of broccoli, my friend ordered the butcher's steak with side of carrots. Portions for the sides were enormous so we should have looked at pics beforehand. Ambience was very cool- we sat at the chef counter since it was just two of us but there was little interaction with the chefs so probably a regular table would have been better. Our waiter was really nice. He had a lot of tables and we didn't see him for a while but I suspect he was letting us chat. Man, places like this need to duplicate as much as they can. St. Anselm did not disappoint from start to finish! I was a solo diner for this experience and sat at the bar. The bartenders were friendly, filled waters promptly and were fast. I came in about 5pm on a Saturday and there were only 5-6 other people at the bar, but the dining area was pretty full. This place has an almost pioneer-ish vibe with all of the taxidermy on the walls mixed with like your Uncle's cabin in the woods in the 60s. I was digging it. I started with the buttermilk biscuits and pimento cheese. Wow. I could have eaten all of them. The bartender and I agreed that it wasn't a good idea. He said he did it once. I also had a mint julep, and while I normally like them, this one was a little different. The presentation was cool, but the drink was all ice, which was disappointing. Great location inside Union Market in NE DC, and major bonus, I lucked up with a PRIME parking spot right in front. Not sure about a garage nearby though. We pulled up right after "BEAT THE BOMB" as part of my friend's birthday celebration. There were 7 of us and we were STARVING. My friends were obsessed with the biscuits, like truly raving. I tried them and I didn't quite get the hype, but hey... For entrées, we had a mix of steak, branzino, salmon, and pot pie. My steak was cooked right, flavorful. I also tasted the branzino and that was also a hit. Both were really, really good. A few places popped up, but this place caught my attention based on reviews, photos, and the time it would take me to get there from the metro. Coming from the Navy Yard it was about a 10-15 train ride with a short 5 minute walk to the restaurant. The restaurant gave "high class" but with affordable prices. Almost like an upscale bar if that makes sense. The gentleman who waited on me was very attentive and gave one major recommendation, I needed to get their buttermilk biscuits. So, of course I did. They were huge, fresh, and delicious. They do come with a pimento cheese but I was not a fan so I used butter. Either way they were great. I for my entree I got the prime ribeye paired with the pan fried mashed potatoes. It was a lot of food but I had no steak left over to take back to my hotel. I am a Starr super fan. I love his restaurants and try to visit them even when I'm outside of DC. I went to St. Anselm last night after having dined several other times there since opening, but it just doesn't seem to be up the the Starr quality one expects. It was a handful of small things that just piled on to make it an ok experience vs exceptional. First, we ordered a side of biscuits, (we only wanted them) but were charged/given the pimento cheese (which was an additional $6. which wasn't eaten). The cheese were sold separately from the biscuits so I know it wasn't required. Then we ordered steaks, one medium one meidum rare, the medium was medium rare and the medium rare was rare. It was a sliced steak so the chef should have seen it wasn't cooked to order. Then the corn side dish. We thought this was a sharing side since it was priced at $10. It was a SINGLE ear of corn. For $10. How are people supposed to share sides when its a single ear of corn? Again, a few details that pushed my general love for STARR restaurants into the 3 star ok zone. read more

The stellar reviews have it right. This is my go to place for steaks. A tight menu where everything is carefully prepared and delicious. Ordering. Many of the steaks and sides are quite large and easily feed two. The 16 oz ribeye is the best example. Tender, juicy and aged on site to perfection. The sides are easily enough for two. The pan fried mashed potatoes are not to be missed. The mushrooms are a perfect complement for the steaks and the creamed spinach is delish. I love tequila, but none of the cocktails really spoke to me, so I kept it simple with a tequila + elderflower + soda water which was refreshing and clearly did the job because I ended up having two . The table ordered biscuits as an appetizer, but since I'm gluten-free, I sadly sat that one out. For entrées, we ordered the lamb leg steak, ribeye, and branzino, plus shared sides of sweet potatoes, mushrooms, and creamed spinach. I had never had a lamb leg steak before and was pleasantly surprised - it was so good, especially with the sweet and savory sauce on top. And listen... I am NOT a mushroom person , but somehow those mushrooms ended up being my favorite side of the night. Absolute shocker. For dessert, the group shared an apple crumble, which they loved. Warm fruit desserts aren't my thing anyway and also, gluten-free struggles , so I passed. Beyond the food, the service really stood out. Our server was attentive, friendly, and gave great recommendations. Even when the manager came by to let us know we were approaching kitchen close, it was done kindly and patiently which is always appreciated when you're racing the clock . The pan mashed potatoes cooked in bacon fat had incredible flavor and I loved the crispy edges. This is not your boring mashed, it's the best. (Shout out to the host/waiter for giving us a complementary glass of champagne for the extra wait time!) We ordered the biscuits, of course, the giant prawn, the Wagyu steak, and the fried mashed potatoes. The biscuits were good, but I wish they also gave you a sweet topping like honey or some type of jam in addition to the pimento cheese spread. The pimento cheese is really rich so after a few bites, I was over it and wanted something sweet to break up the savoriness. The giant prawn was also good, but I should have ordered the salmon (or yellow tail) collar instead because I do remember that fish collar being very flavorful the first time I dined here. The steak was good and tender, though very small in portion. I would've liked a few more bites. Lastly, the fried potatoes were a miss for me. The is a bar and seating right next to their open kitchen. Our server was very pleasant and has great recommendations. You have to try the buttermilk biscuits! Light and flaky with just enough texture on the outside to give it a little crunch. I ordered the chocolate chip pancakes for my meal. I was only expecting two pancakes but the order came and it was three pancakes that were pretty big. I could not finish them. Dark and mysterious with various animals adorning walls and shelves, including the bear skin rug on the wall near the restrooms. We asked for some jam and honey, and all of it was divine. We also ordered some fried okra, which was good even though I'm not really a fan of okra. This was crispy and paired well with the sauce provided. For our entrees I opted for the whole dorade fish, which was accompanied with marinated tomatoes and pickled fennel. Seasoned perfectly and all the flavors paired so well together. My dinner date opted for the ribeye, and it literally melted like butter...perfection. I visited St Anselm once again, on a Monday. It was a warm day so I was trying to stay cool. The train car was cool but the heat blasted everything. I sat at the bar again and the bartender came over. I ordered a German Pilsner and started to look at the menu. I had a good idea what I wanted...but I looked anyway. I really enjoy the wall hangings and vibe of this restaurant. All kinds of different wall hangings, heads from the hunt, various posters and prints. It's the most unique place I have ever eaten. I decided on the NY strip and the fried mashed potatoes. I have never had fried mashed potatoes so I thought why not. The beer is going down fine...I was on the thirsty side. I order another brew and the food arrives. The potatoes are piping hot. The steak looks great. I let everything cool off a bit. The steak had a perfect sear on it. I want to visit the kitchen someday to see how they do that. It's cooked perfect; I asked for medium rare. The potatoes are ok, not quite my thing. Still good though. I finish everything and I'm out. Service was good, food was excellent and the beer was cold. Solid place to grab a steak. I was totally satisfied when I left...the steak craving was gone. read more

This place has been on my list for quite a while. I'm glad that I was finally able to come in New Years week for dinner. My partner and I ordered the buttermilk biscuits, the ribeye, and the NY strip. It was excellent and has officially taken the number one spot I go to for steak in DC. read more
