My haircut consisted of trimming my undercut, following the pre-made lines behind my head with clippers on a number one setting. Didn't ask for designs. Didn't ask for any extra frills. When my hairdresser finished my cut, she led me to the counter to pay with a fee of five dollars. We were quickly interrupted by a worker saying that it was actually ten. When I inquired why I was getting two different prices, the response was: "It's ten dollars for a woman's haircut." "So I'm getting charged more because I am a woman?" "Yes." I've grown up knowing that the merchandise marketed towards my demographic will always carry a pink tax. Even when I'm buying a razor with the same numbers of blades as his. I know when I apply for a loan or buy a car, I will have to bring my father. Even when he taught me how to negotiate as well as he. Going into my career I know I will make 79 cents to every dollar a man makes. Even when I will have a doctorate worth as much as his. I think most hairdressers would agree that I had a relatively simple styling, some might even consider it a "partial haircut" for the reason that only 10% of my hair was altered. And even when the difficulty of the cut and time needed was as simple as perhaps his five dollar haircut, only my gender was considered as a reason for a price increase. Consider what you are telling the customers that walk through your doors. What I heard is that you felt okay about enforcing a culture of inequality and that the worth of being a woman will come at a much greater cost. To you, we aren't women that are just. To you, we are just women. If this is a reminder, so be it. If this is a new revelation, so be it. We are no lesser than anyone else. We are no greater than anyone else. We should just believe in the radical notion that women are people. read more

This was our first experience here: We tried Avenue Hair for our toddlers on Saturday. Its a sort of salon meets old school barber shop - we really enjoyed the ambience. They are GREAT with kids! They had several stylists available at once so our boys were able to get their hair cut at the same time. The stylists were very patient with them and didn't just give them the standard "boy cut" that you get at some children's salons. They also have a little playroom area at the back of the salon where kids can play while you get your hair cut. Awesome. And the price was great. Also - lollipops for the kids on the way out! The only thing you have to remember is that they are cash only. (they will accept checks in a pinch, but they don't prefer them) We'll be back! And this was our second experience here: Awful. When we arrived for our children's haircuts they kept insisting that my husband also had an appointment - he didn't. He tried to clear this up on the phone a few days prior but for some reason they just didn't get it. They sat our VERY tall toddler on a baby seat in order to better reach his hair (makes sense, right?). And they sat our much shorter 2 year old on the bottom of the seat where they could hardly get to his head at all. (should have stopped it right there). The stylist for the two year old kept asking if this was his first haircut. It wasn't. I tried to be pretty specific with the style that we wanted for his hair (he has a lot of hair) and she cut literally the hair on the right side of his head - and NOT the hair on the left! Or in the back!!! I kept trying to look at him to see if things looked even and I couldn't really tell at first and they were so busy that we really felt we had to grab our kids and run out the door. With our older toddler - they just did a "bad job" - his bangs are very uneven - the sides of his head were not trimmed at all, the back was not thinned out. So - now - we have to go have their haircuts fixed by someone else. I'm so upset because I'm spending twice the money just for kids haircuts when they at first only needed a trim. Honestly the haircuts were SO awful we're a bit afraid to go back - so we're not. There is a lovely barber shop around the corner that my husband has been going to for most of a year now and we're going there. Its not as "kid-friendly" no, but they do a great job with hair. Linda butchered my bangs trim then got defensive when I asked her to remedy it, trying to blame her hasty work on me. Thank God for vanya who salvaged what she could. I've had bangs most of my life. This is THE WORST trim I've ever had and no remorse from Linda. Don't see her unless you want your hair butchered. Go to Vanya. read more

I just needed a quick trim. When I got there they quoted me a price that was higher than what was posted on their website. When I asked why I was told that they hadn't gotten around to changing the info on their website and they stuck with the higher price. I looked around and there was no sign showing what their prices were. I don't do business with dishonest businesses, so I left. read more

The worst haircut my husband has ever had, looks ridiculous like he just got back from being deployed. His beautiful blonde styled, professional hair was cut short with clippers on the bottom with a ring of longer hair on top. I'm not sure why Linda the woman who cut his hair even thought that this looked good! To top it off it's not even. It looks like my child cut it. I seriously question Linda's ability to cut hair. Never again, he will never go back there. So angry and the best part is now I have to take him to get it fixed. You get what you pay for. read more

I've never had a hair stylist before. I've always gone to great clips and got the cheap cut. Well I got what I paid for there and when I moved to Evanston about three years ago, I gave this place a try. At first I tried a few different people until one day I met Kristina. I told her what I tell everyone (having gone in with my hair as it usually is) that this is what I have to work with, I need something low maintenance, and I don't know how to do anything but blow my hair dry without any styling. I wanted something with layers that would look good on me and I wanted it long. Well she took a good look and then started in. She dared me to do some long bangs and we gave it a try. Then, as she dried my hair she showed me and told me what to do so I could make my hair as nice as it looked when she did it. Well it worked. The haircut came out awesome and I now know how to make my hair look good every day. I think its the little things like the friendly talk and how they remember what's going on in your life and how they really want you to be happy with your cut. Either way I haven't gone to anyone else since. read more

avenue hair is the way to go, nice friendly workers, good price, good cut. i went to get a shorter shaggy kind of hair cut, a big difference than my long thick hair and had a wonderful experience. sharon cut my hair and i loved it. she was nice and funny and it was probably the best experience i've had while getting my hair cut. it was a little longer on top than i originally wanted so i went back two days later and sharon dry cut it for free!! i also appreciated how not judged i felt when requesting the cut, i showed her what i wanted and all she had was positive things to say and walked me through what j was going to do. 10/10 experience and everyone should go here!! read more

I used to get my hair cut here a lot until I started getting more artsy cuts and no matter my instruction I couldn't get anyone at Avenue to do anything too risky. Still, they're nice people for normal cuts including layers and stuff. They do GREAT mens cuts and very nice little kid cuts. I would not go here for a special occasion updo and their coloring is hit or miss. They're hardcore Northwestern Wildcat fans so expect some kind of game on their TV. They're definatley family friendly and if you like them you'll end up having a great relationship with them. read more

I have had good experiences previously, but the haircut I received today was poor. Be careful going to this location, if you do not have a trusted stylist do not take the risk and stay with your current haircut location. I had to go home and try to re-cut my hair to minimize the defect she made behind my ear. Maybe it was an off day, but it felt rushed and overall left me feeling very dissatisfied. I did make the mistake of not checking the hair at the location, albeit she did not offer the mirror, and now I know why. read more

My boyfriend has been going to Erika at Avenue for more than a year, and every experience has been a positive one. She is friendly, professional, and always intent on giving him exactly the cut he is looking for. The great experiences extend to the front desk and ownership as well. We have never had a problem with appointment availability or scheduling. John, the owner, always goes well out of his way to make us feel like family. When we come in, it feels more like a social call than anything else. They even set me up in a chair nearby so that I can be part of the experience. My boyfriend used to dread his monthly haircuts, citing them as just another wasted hour in his week. Now, we both look forward to them! Keep up the great work, John, Erika, and front desk staff! I've been getting my hair cut here for the last 6 years - having moved too far away from a salon and stylist in Lincoln Square that had been cutting my hair for about 14 years. I tried three other places in Evanston and what I like about Avenue Hair is the down to earth atmosphere and conscientious staff. Andrea has been terrific about making sure I get the cut I want and also encouraging me to try new things. What I most appreciate is that her work is consistent, and I mean every time. When my folks first moved to the area, my mom was seeing her as well before they moved to the burbs, and she's still talking about how attentive Andrea is. It's also pretty clear that the reason several members of the Avenue Hair "family" continue to work there isn't a matter of convenience but out of a shared enthusiasm for great service that has translated to generations of customers coming back. read more

I went to Avenue hair because Celebrity Salon was closed. I am new to the area and wanted to find a new place to get my hair cut. I asked for 1/4 inch off the top and the woman basically buzzed my whole head...you might ask, "why didn't you stop her before she got to far along with the cut?" She had me turned away from the mirror for the majority of the time...I also noticed that my side burns were not even close to even or straight when I got home. If you want any kind of haircut that requires more than the same length around your entire head, I would suggest going somewhere else... read more

I got a haircut here about a half year ago. I wanted not-to-short men's cut. The woman there didn't want to or didn't know how to use scissors and gave a buzz cut by using only the clipper. Also, the clipper sometimes came too close and I felt the pinch from the clipper sometimes. This place costs more than Supercuts a few blocks away. They use scissors at Supercuts. I am disappointed with this place. read more

I have long, thick hair and it seems to take a little extra talent to cut and style it well. After bringing my young son here a few times and being happy with his cuts and service, I made an appointment for a trim for myself. When I got there, it was apparent that mine was the last service of the day; there was only one employee there and she had a friend with her. The disaster started with the shampoo - in order not to tangle long hair, you can't rub and scrub the scalp, which is exactly what she did. My hair was extremely tangled as a result - should have been my first clue! Combing out back at the chair, she started at the top and yanked and pulled so much, she pulled out hair and I had to stop her. The whole time, she ignored me and just talked to her girlfriend as if I were a mannequin! The cut she gave me was very uneven and rushed - she clearly wanted to get out of there and didn't give a rip about providing a good service! The next day, I called the owner and he did absolutely NOTHING. I would never recommend this place to anyone, which is a shame as I like to keep my business local. :( read more

Been there a couple of times for walk in haircuts. Both times I walked in the barbers/stylists were largely not busy and sticking their nose in their phones, giving off a general 'don't care' vibe. It took some effort to get someone's attention, eventually getting my haircut. The haircuts were ok for the price. My first haircut was good, the second wasn't nearly as good. The overall atmosphere of this place was unfriendly. I would only go back in a pinch. read more

I've been getting my hair cut at Avenue Hair for almost 20 years since moving to Evanston. I am very fussy about what I want in terms of service and quality and at first I drove 40 minutes back to my old neighborhood for my cuts but when my stylist cut back on her hours and could no longer accommodate my needs (for an appointment on Saturdays) I decided to try Avenue Hair. Over the years I have had cuts by several of the stylists due to vacations, maternity leaves, etc., and I can say that I have always been satisfied. Of course I have my favorite stylist but when Kris is not available she makes sure one of her colleagues can accommodate me. John, the owner, is usually there when I'm getting my shampoo, cut and style and he is very friendly and always busy cutting hair or giving shaves. I'm amazed at how well the stylists can cut kids hair even with all the head moving and squirming that the kids do. Avenue Hair staff shampoo, cut, style and color and trim mustaches and eyebrows. Also there is a tanning bed in back for those who want to maintain their tans year-round. There is a corner with toys to keep kids busy while their parents get their hair done. I recommend Avenue Hair, they really care about customer satisfaction. Appointments are not needed but if you want a particular stylist, call ahead. read more

I used to go here for a long time, and found a person that was great. Well, she left and I got a haircut today. ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE! The person that cut my hair DID NOT know what she was doing. Very inexperienced. Cut WAY more off than I asked for. My hair is unevenly cut. Just looks bad. It really does look like an $18 dollar hair cut. Now I get to wait who knows how many months until it grows out to the length I wanted it to be. VERY UPSET! First off, she almost cut my hair in a side part, therefore it would be TOTALLY UNEVEN if parted int he center. I had to correct her and she then fixed my part to what she called a "center part" which was on the LEFT SIDE of my head. Then she keep asking if I wanted layers or bangs and I said just a trim, 2 INCHES, NO bangs OR Layers. Also, she looked very unsure of herself. Not very friendly either. BAD EXPERIENCE. NEVER GOING THERE AGAIN! DO NOT RECOMMEND! You'll be MUCH better off spending more money, at a nice salon, and getting the haircut you want. read more
