It's a rare thing to find staff so welcoming and friendly and willing to help. We had a rough day coming in at the airport to visit family and required a place to sleep before the long drive and The Avery was perfect. Fantastic atmosphere and rooms. Just what weary travelers look for when exhausted and in need of rest. Particular thanks to the afternoon staff Brighton and (I cannot remember the other young lady's name) they went out of their way to make us feel welcome and at home, even a call to the room after we had settled in to make sure it was what we had expected and if anything else could be done to make us feel comfortable. Can't say thank you enough. The other staff members as well as the valet were all exceptionally polite and friendly. Highly recommend to all travelers! Bravo! read more

We should have skipped the souflé, as it just wasn't a great flavor. Tables are very close to other parties. Celebrating our anniversary, we would have preferred a little more space. But overall food was delicious and not overpriced. We will be back! We also stayed at The Avery Hotel (3 stars) and will not be back. We heard the elevator, people and doors slamming all night. TEN! Where are more stars?! The Avery has come out swinging in the ever expanding downtown Boise restaurant scene. The restaurant takes up 3/4 of the ground level of the hotel (last 1/4 is Tiner's Alley bar, also great!) . The inside is very tasteful design, not overly done, just the right amount of gorgeous Parisian style, feeling like you are in a place far away from Boise. We started by enjoying some Vancouver BC west coast oysters, our favorites! Since Little Pearly Oyster Bar closed we were left wondering where would be a good alternative, come to find out Avery has us covered. One special on this night was truffle gnocchi which my wife ordered and thoroughly enjoyed. This is a review for the restaurant. So good! My brother-in-law and his wife took us there for brunch this morning during our visit. With many good choices on the menu, I settled on a starter order of Scotch egg and a side of breakfast sausages for brunch at the last minute. The alternative I considered was grits with a sunny side up egg and cheddar. The egg was perfect 8-minute egg with a slight soft-core yolk coated with layer of deep-fried meaty goodness. It was a generously sized egg placed on a small bed of green salad and bacon pieces so I wouldn't have needed the sausages in retrospect as the side came with 4 fat juicy pieces. The Avery is a hotel, restaurant and bar. This review is for Avery Brasserie, where my wife and I had dinner with another couple on Saturday. Parking in downtown Boise can be a challenge, especially with all of the road construction. We ended up parking at the ParkBOI 2-1/2 blocks away. The restaurant is a brasserie, so it's set up like a French cafe. The space is absolutely beautiful, although the tables are quite small and quite close together. We briefly considered moving to a table in the Bar, which is located in the back room, past the restrooms and the kitchen, but there was a lot more light in the Brasserie and it felt slightly warmer. Although we were seated between two occupied tables, both tables left before our food arrived, so we enjoyed a little bit of space from other diners. Kim, our server, was excellent. She knows the menu and is very efficient. First, we had cocktails. I was told that the espresso cocktail was good, there was a nice rosé cremant (aka a French champagne produced outside of the designated Champagne region) available by the glass and the bar had Lagavulin. I had The Manitou (Montenegro, Buffalo Trace, Egg White, Lemon, Simple, Bordeaux Cherry). It was served in a small rocks glass neat, just like the Lagavulin, and is quite tasty, if a tad bit sweet. I ended up switching to the rosé cremant for my second drink. For an appetizer, we had a couple of orders of Crispy Baby Artichokes (white beans, shaved parmesan, baby arugula, artichoke vinaigrette). They're excellent. For our entrees, two of us had the Duo of Beef special, which paired a braised short rib with 42-day dry aged ribeye eye cooked medium rare and mashed potatoes. It was excellent. One of our party had the Halibut special. But in my opinion, the standout dish was my wife's Cassoulet (lamb, duck, house made sausage, pork belly, grilled baguette) from the regular dinner menu. Every component of the dish was very tasty (yes, she lets me sample her food), although more white beans would have been appreciated. For dessert, we ordered a couple of Pistachio Soufflés, which were served with tiny pitchers of crème anglais. What's not to like? I'd definitely head back to Avery Brasserie during my next visit to Boise. I'm already looking forward to it. read more

It took 20 minutes just to be greeted, another 20 for drinks, and after nearly 2 hours we still hadn't received our meals--only two appetizers. The server never checked on us or updated us, and the manager simply said the kitchen never got our order, with no apology. Every member of the staff, valet, and housekeeping were exceptionally friendly. This stay was extra special because I wanted to propose after dinner one night. I reached out to the hotel and they were excited to be a part of our special evening, willing to decorate our room secretly while my girlfriend and I were eating dinner on the main floor (the restaurant is incredible)! Smiles, greetings, and clean rooms made our stay top-tier. The hotel itself is BEAUTIFUL and sits in a prime location that's walking distance to the hub of Boise - 8th street. The second floor of the hotel has a library with old books about Boise loaned to the hotel. This hotel will have a special place in our hearts and we will be back, if not for anything else but the lovely staff which accompany the splendid building. Only negative was the tables were VERY close together and NO privacy. It almost felt like your neighbors table was part of our party. We had such high hopes for The Avery, that my wife made reservations for my birthday dinner. Let's talk about the good before we get into the bad. We received a friendly greeting and were seated quickly. The decor and style of the restaurant was top.notch. Lots of nice details and a great aesthetic. Restrooms were very nice as well. Our server Bob was attentive and pleasant. This is where the good mostly ends. My wife ordered a Dos Hombres Espresso Martini, which is one of her favorite Press and Pony drinks. She said it tasted like it was made with trash coffee and was definitely not a fan. This could be because it's not listed on their normal cocktail list. Who knows. We started with the ceviche. Honestly it was pretty good overall with a nice variety of perfectly cooked seafood and a mild citrus flavor profile. It could just be me but I prefer having at least some onion flavor in ceviche, and it was non-existent in this dish. I was still hopeful at this point, but those hopes were soon crushed I ordered the steak fries and my wife ordered the roasted chicken. Presentation of the chicken was good... The steak, not so much. It looked like a turd on the plate. I ordered the steak medium rare and half of it was well done, the other half was medium well at best. The steak and gravy were also cold when they arrived, which was strange because it came out multiple minutes after my wife's meal. Beyond all that, the steak was extremely tough and had little to no seasoning or flavor. One of the worst steaks I've ever had, and considering we're in Idaho, the land of great beef, this was a major let down. There's really no excuse for this here. My fries were also cold upon arrival. The roasted chicken was okay. The gravy was tasty and the chicken wasn't dry but that's where the compliments end. The potatoes had little to no seasoning and were void of texture. The macaroni au Gratin was pretty decent but was essentially overpriced fancied up mac and cheese. Like I said, we had high hopes for this place due to the chef's reputation but it didn't come anywhere close to the hype or our expectations. So we happened upon this place by sheer accident walking in the downtown area. We walked in because I love old hotels/buildings and teach history. It is a historic building that was closed for a very long time and sat vacant but has been remodeled. I think maybe only open a year, if I remember the history story correctly. The hotel has a wonderful history and is now attached to the restaurant next door. That eatery used to be something more casual we were told before it was reinvented to the beautiful venue/establishment it is now. An open wall connects the restaurant to the hotel. The hotel is a smaller, more quaint establishment. The Art work and renovation pieces were chosen with great care to match a vintage look with more modern flair. When we walked in we were greeted by the most delightful person named Dexter. It is very apparent that Dexter loves his job and is very proud of the hotel he works for. I honestly think Dexter could have a show or a blog about the hotel. Locally here we have a man who is known as the vintage historian. He is very popular. He does walking city tours and shows around town. Dexter could do well with this too since he is a great story teller. That is one of my passions in life. Because after all, we only have our stories at the end of the day. Dexter explained that they had the original check in sign in guest book upstairs from the year 1912 and that every day they carefully match the date to the date back then. Waaaa?????? How awesome is that? He invited us to go look at it. My geeky self was thrilled and practically raced up the wonderful stairs. Okay, not really raced. I had to stop and look at all the historic old photos. When we came back downstairs, Dexter asked us if we wanted a mini tour of the rooms/suites. Ummm, yes please. That was very nice of him to do that. I honestly think I picked the wrong career choice for me and should have been an architect. lol The room Dexter showed us was simply gorgeous. That claw tub, sigh. The rooms are delightfully brought back to their original old school type of feel but with modern touches and the lobby elevator original door has been kept as part of the wall decor. There is an alley speakeasy english style pub through the kitchen that is also appealing decor wise. Sadly, we had already eaten that evening and were on the way back to the airport to head back to Phoenix. However, the food looked exceptional at both eateries and both places are very attractive decor wise. This will be my first stop if we ever get back to Boise. Thank you so much to Dexter. The hotel is really homey and welcoming, super well-located and great restaurant. But the best part of the hotel is the staff. My husband and I live in Truckee, CA and had a very last-minute trip to Boise as our dog was in an accident which paralyzed him and required an urgent spinal surgery which was only available in Boise. When Asher and Brighton heard about it when we were checking in, they went out of their way to make our stay extra-welcoming, upgrading our room, giving us some drinks which we really needed, and flexibility on check-out as we did not know how the surgery would go. This place is so well designed. So many beautiful details. We were there on opening night- our initial cocktails were quite delayed, but our server Douglas was very communicative about the issue. Mmmm, mmm, mmm! The bread here is so delicious! Came here to celebrate my sisters birthday brunch and we had the quiche, croissants, beignets and other egg dishes. I could have eaten 10 of those quiches- I'm still thinking about it. Can you all make a giant one for me? We learned that all the breads are done in house and it definitely tastes fresh. They did SUCH a great job with this remodel! The Avery restaurant looks like a classy brasserie I have eaten at in Paris. There is such an attention to detail and a care to not only renovate the over a century old space, but also restore and carefully recreate some of the charm of yesteryear. They had a Brunswick bar shipped over from New York, that was only a year older than the original gorgeous bar that graced the wall of the Bouquet for decades, to have it's place in The Avery. The original bar from the Bouquet was moved to the English pub in the back of the space called Tiner's Alley. They managed to produce an entirely different vibe back there and an entirely different menu. My father is a musician and had played at The Bouquet years ago. We are all native Boiseans. He, as well as my sister and I, were interested in what they had done to the place. We were all looking around at everything! Our server came and told us the specials and filled our water glasses (my ONLY complaint is no ice in the water...I'm a big ice person. :D ) She never rushed us and answered all our questions. Very friendly and cheerful! We started with a few drinks and then decided that we wanted to try a few starters. We had the petit salad (field greens with a very light vinaigrette), the watermelon and heirloom tomato salad (I don't usually like fruits and veg together - yes, I know tomato is technically a fruit - don't @ me!), and this rabbit and duck dish (something like a pate) with artisan bread. Everything was SO good! For dinner, my dad had the sole, I had the chicken, and my sister had the ravioli. My dad and sister finished theirs and loved it. I, too, loved the chicken, but had to take about half of it home because I was so full from the starters!! I didn't get pictures of dessert because I was so fully invested in the evening that I completely forgot! We had the sorbet trio which came on a homemade shortbread cookie, the panna cotta, and the pistachio souffle. All of it was incredible! And everything was freshly made. We then went in the back to Tiner's Alley and had a night cap there. The bartenders were so friendly and personable. The drinks were great and crafted with care. The environment was great: a fireplace, pool table, and a great vibe. That is, until our server/bartender made things quite uncomfortable. His demeanor was intrusive and much too personal. There is a difference between providing great service and making comments about your partner in an attempt to antagonize you. And that's what he did. The drinks were outstanding! For appetizers we had the artichokes & the scallop crudo. Incredible presentation- and even better flavor. I would've been satisfied with just the drinks & apps. But we ordered the rabbit & the sole (fish) which blew our minds. All of the unique flavors so perfectly paired- incredible. This is hands down the best food/drinks in Boise. SO worth the price and experience! The friendly staff, amazing service- INCREDIBLE food and drinks... is unlike anything Boise has seen. We were lucky enough to tour the hotel... what a gem. Had dinner here with a group of 7. We started of with cocktails in the back bar. The bar in the back is underwhelming except for the original bar itself. Cocktails were good but over priced, even for downtown Boise. We were seated at our table in the restaurant and loved the modern contemporary decor. Our server was very nice and informative. Everyone agreed the pear salad was very good but the main courses were somewhat underwhelming for the price. For example the cioppino had a lovely broth and scallops but the clams were miniature and the shrimp overcooked. Not worth the $50+ cost. read more

A boutique hotel, as I have learned, is a hotel that feels small, intimate, and quaint, stays true to local culture, and offers guests ultra-personal service --The Avery knocks it out of the park on all counts -15/10. The Avery is a labor of love seen in even the smallest details, and this attention to detail is evidenced again and again, especially in the people who make this place come alive. From start to finish, each person with whom I interacted went above and beyond to ensure my team and I had such the best experience -and we did! I had the pleasure of working with The Avery's Events Planner, Amy, a true-blue, can-do mastermind who orchestrated our experience -accommodations, meals, and meeting space--in the most harmonic of ways. Amy's events planning finesse was off the charts, and it was such a joy to get to discuss details with her. I had the pleasure of working with Kim, The Avery restaurant manager, on reservations, set menus, and group entertainment; and she was pure rockstar! The process was painless with Kim's help. Lucy also served and tirelessly took care of our crew, and the way she took note of preferences and orders from one day to the next was intentional, personable, and so, so thoughtful! The front staff with whom I had the pleasure of interacting -Lee, Aesling, Jay, Katie, and Tristan--were welcoming, helpful, and all together professional. And as for the unseen staff -the individuals in the kitchen, oh my heavens! The creations the chef and crew concocted were mind blowing! The ingredient pairings and flavor profiles tantalized my palate in the best of ways. The cuisine honored both the dish and the season with skill and subtlety -ravioli that was savory with a touch of zest, risotto with fresh fish and flavorful herbs, a chocolate torte that was divine. The presentation was pure art with colors, textures, and intentional arrangements that created a full sensory experience atop a beautiful dinnerware canvas that varied from one dish to the next. The ingredients were fresh and cooked to perfection. The individuals who cleaned The Avery did a phenomenal job of turning down my room each day. As for details specific to the hotel, here are some that I noticed and sincerely enjoyed for the Soaking Tub Suite: * The room was rich-warmth, gold-gilded luxury. An astounding balance of yin and yang at-home-comfort with clean-line elegance created by warm (and dimmable) lighting from alluring fixtures. The dark wood framing, baseboards, and accent wall with which the wardrobe and desk matched were complemented by a white duvet and marble desk, gold-framed pictures and side tables, and an oversized gold-framed mirror. Then there were pops of green created with a vased fern plume and a long, velvet accent pillow, along with books from days of yore. * The new bed with down pillows, white duvet cover and sheets, and tall headboard (perfect for leaning back against) made for sweet slumber, and the sidelamps were nicely positioned for reading. * The dimmable, overhead, (actual) flip switch lighting with chic light fixtures was pure hotel brilliance! * The shower pressure was the best I have experienced (possibly ever), and the elegant gold fixtures and glass wall felt like luxury for days. * The white tiles on the bathroom floor and walls along with the white marble countertop made for a clean and spacious feel. * The towels and Avery embroidered bathrobe were plush and ornately arranged to look like flowers upon arrival. * Gold-framed paintings (in the room and hallways) added depth, character, intrigue, and historical context, especially when paired with the aged books, and the historical context, especially when paired with the aged books, and the historic Mantou Hotel registry and reading nook on the second floor. * The Avery branded, Idaho-based toiletries added a local connection, and the scent of the shampoo/conditioner and body wash was one that I have dreamed of finding for ages. * The single-serve coffee maker with Illy pods and accompanying creamer cups was great for early mornings, and The Avery branded gold embellished mugs made the experience all the better. * Thoughtful accoutrements like a hook by the door to hang a jacket or bag, embroidering to label the makeup towel and hair drier, locally sourced snacks and toiletries, a small toiletry kit should something be forgotten/needed, a classy cover for the extra roll of toilet paper, a vanity magnifying mirror, wine glasses, faceted tumblers, and a bath tray with soaking salts. * The bathtub was a sumptuous conclusion to the day. * The large, wood-framed windows set a spectacular Boise scene and allowed for natural light to stream through. * The cookie and refreshments corner on the first floor was a tasty welcome upon arrival each day. * Chef Cal, Ashley, and their team intentionally looked at all the bummer details found in other hotel rooms and improved upon them with unparalleled panache. read more

My husband and I were very excited to try when they opened. Made a reservation for my birthday (noted on res), late Oct. The restaurant is beautiful! We were sat at a small two top that seemed like an afterthought in the aisle between the booth tables. Since we were at the first one, people kept bumping me the whole time, I felt very 'in the way'. I red wine I ordered had gone bad and tasted like vinegar. I let the server know and she apologized. I ordered a white wine, it was also not very good and tasted a bit old and like apple juice, I didn't say anything. We spent a lot of time trying to decide on menu items, it was very limited with only a handful of appetizers and entrees to choose from. We enjoy great restaurants all over the world and always up for trying something new, but just not excited about anything offered there. It seemed very basic for the high price. $30 for roasted chicken? We decided to hold off on dinner and order an appetizer and see how it went. We ordered the crispy artichoke arugula salad. The artichokes and greens were good, however there was a bunch of whole peppercorn looking crunchy things throughout, whole corriander maybe. I don't know, whatever it was got all stuck in our teeth and made it really hard to eat. At that point we threw in the towel. We let our server know we had only come for an appetizer, didn't have the heart to tell her nothing on the menu looked good. Between being constantly bumped into and the wine and appetizer experience we were ready to go. We went into Tiner's Alley in the back, what a cool place! The bar was full, but they were very helpful at finding us a spot. We had amazing appetizers (scotch egg & benton's ham and veggie plate) & wonderful cocktails and service. Same kitchen I believe. Not sure how to review them separately. We'll try again if the menu changes someday. For dinner out we'll stick to Percy, Chandlers, Brickyard & Coa De Jima for now. read more

We LOVE the Avery! Carefully crafted food and cocktails with wonderful service. We stopped in Tiners Alley for their happy hour and went over to the Avery for a phenomenal meal. I love how they change the menu with seasonal items. This is our third time and we will be back! Our favorite place to take friends. read more
