Not sure entirely if this was because of this clinic. Based on other reviews of cleanliness it seems like a possiblity. I have an indoor cat, never exposed to anything or other animals, after taking him to the vet, he started to have fleas or ticks, other small bugs. It ended up costing me a lot more. The most likely cause was that he contracted them from the vet. However the staff were nice, but it was pricier than other clinics and highly likely taking my cat there harmed him. read more

I brought my dog here for vaccines and a check up. We were using Hill Country Animal Hospital for 10 years and decided to give this one a chance since we're new to the area from south Austin. On our first visit, the vet said my dog needed to be muzzled because she barked at him. My dog who hates the vet and who had never been there before, barked and then they said she needed anxiety meds and a muzzle. She's never bitten anyone in her life. No vet has ever mentioned this. *our dog is a current patient* Arrived this morning at 7:30am(opening time) because our dog was dying/taking his last breath AND THEY TURNED US AWAY (because we didn't schedule/make an appointment for our dog's sudden death). We didn't have an appointment so they turned us away, told us to go somewhere else and wished us luck! They literally said "good luck"!! There wasn't another car in the parking lot. We were the only ones there AND THEY TURNED OUR DYING DOG AWAY. Gave him no chance and gave us no hope. My husband and I are flabbergasted. What a traumatic event. Take your pets to New Hope instead. Once we arrived at New Hope they ran out to the car, took action, GAVE US HOPE, took our limp and gasping dog (who they have also never seen before btw), immediately started treating him and now he is in stable condition... I'm embarrassed I ever gave Avery Ranch "Hospital" a chance. Absolutely embarrassed. I write this review so somebody else doesn't make the same mistake that I did and hopefully AR takes a step back and realizes what they did and prevents it from happening again to someone else (because it sure the hell won't be with me and my dog). read more

The first impression is that this building is filthy on the inside. They haven't cleaned the vents in years. If they can't clean the most obviously seen areas it makes you question what they aren't cleaning that you can't see? The rooms are tiny and also filthy. Look up. They don't even have a permanent scale in the rooms to weigh a cat. The rooms are so small and uncomfortably awkward for you, a vet, a vet tech and your pet to all occupy simultaneously. If nasty, dingy and lack of proper pet health care is what you like, then you found it here. The vets are angry and uneducated and put one of my cats in the hospital with malpractice. They are idiots. This practice is so outdated and filthy, I wouldn't bring any animal here for professional diagnosis, annual shots or exams let alone an emergency. If you care about your pet's wellbeing cleanliness & comfortability of facilities, up to date technology and educated vets and vet techs that actually care about your pet, take them to Spicewood Springs Animal hospital which services cats and dogs or Spicewood Springs Cat hospital which only services cats! We started coming here 4 years ago and was seeing Dr. Ashbaugh. She was wonderful and we loved her. After she left we started seeing the other doctors. That's when be became dissatisfied with the care they were giving our dogs. We've had check ups where they didn't even look in our dogs ears or really check them. In the room 5 minutes. We've been laughed at for expressing concerns with our dog, we don't receive call backs when calling for questions. The latest was our elderly dog had some skin issues. Their remedy was to prescribe multiple, pricey medications in hopes something worked. No culture or anything was taken. We spent over $600 in 5 weeks and she still has skin problems. Again I call and they want me to bring her in again. I'm not spending another dollar at this vet. I will go somewhere they know how to treat animals. read more

I would only recommend Dr. Ash. I have not seen any other vets there, but I have lived across the country and she is and has been the only one I would personally recommend. She genuinely is attentive fully present in conversation about what your pet needs. Always available by phone, prompt to call back, patient with our concerns. Horrible experience. Quoted one price, then charged another said $49 per pup for a wellness exam but was charged $65 each. It also took me 4 requests and threatening to dispute the charge with my bank just to get a copy of bill! The front office didn't let us in bc we wouldn't wear masks but when I did go in, the front office staff weren't even wearing masks up, but rather on their chin until they saw me. To make it even worse, the front office manager didn't even want to honour a $25off special offer listed for first time patients saying that they stopped doing it a year ago but was still listed on their website. Have zero faith in this DVM capabilities bc I took my pup who's been having issues and "Dr" Dunn couldn't even recognize that my pup had an inner ear infection that was easily noticed by a real DVM. If you value your pet, time, and money, save yourself some frustration and your pets well being and go somewhere else. read more

First appointment for a cat eye infection went pretty well and the vet addressed all concerns - but our recent follow up a week later showed extreme apathy. Being charged $44 for a 5 minute session and the vet to not even pay attention to the difference between her healthy eye, and her eye after a full course of treatment is a bit ridiculous. I called them this morning (a Saturday) as a new patient because my male cat Lunar was showing signs of something being up with his Urinary track or bladder. They took us right away. The vet and vet technician were so hopeful and kind. They made us and more importantly Lunar feel safe. They thoroughly explained a variety of things that might be the problem and what the treatments would be. They didn't mind us asking a million questions either. We have our boy on a treatment plan now with things to do in a few days if this doesn't work out. They went over step by step what the plan was, what the medications did and so much more. They showed us how to give the medicine step by step as well! Their pricing was beyond fair. I can't recommend this place enough and even after only going here once, I can confidently say that they are now my prime vet office!!!! read more

I have had nothing but terrible experiences here. I just moved to Texas and needed to get my pups in for wellness checkups and shots. I called and scheduled an appointment under their $1 new patients but had to cancel due to work and reschedule and then missed my appointment as my meeting ran over. When I finally got in they didn't tell me that because I missed and rescheduled my appointment the $1 was no longer valid and charged me the full visit price... The vet we saw, she spoke to me like a child and wasn't listening to a word about my dogs issues. He has had bad allergies for 8 years and I know what causes them but she really wanted to insist it was food - it most certainly isn't. Also, when I asked her for a "dex" shot as my wonderful previous vet used to give him she acted like she had NO idea what I was talking about... perfect you don't know the steroid I'm referring to. I feel great about this. Because I had spent the money already I decided to try to stick it out. I brought them in to board for 10 days while I was away. I asked for heartworm medicine to be administered and then I asked if they could do a micro chip and Jennifer who is by far my least favorite there acted like I was inconveniencing her because she had to draw up new quotes and treated me almost as if I wouldn't be able to afford what I was asking for... again I decided to continue on and give it another shot. A few months later Oz was acting strangely and kept coughing and gagging so I called in to see if they had an opening. They had one almost immediately so I took him in and my good gal pal Jennifer looks at me and says oh whose this? I said uhhmmm Oz ( I've literally been in this office like 8 times by now ) and she says oh well we're waiting on an emergency, one tech comments " this is the emergency" and she responds " oh well he looks fine to me " I almost flew off my rails. What gives you the credentials to know by looking at him that he's ok? The ONLY saving grace was Dr Skupin but him alone couldn't change my mind on this place. But he knew exactly how to treat Oz and me. Refreshing change from everything else... I sent some nasty complaints to management they were half heartedly addressed and then just plain ignored with no follow up or discussion. Today I was desperate to get Oz a prescription of Apoquel which they knew he was previously on but hadn't yet filled a prescription in the office and of course my bestie Jen answers and says she will have to ask the vet ( Oz has been seen twice now by a vet and examined this shouldn't be hard ) to see if he can prescribe without an exam ( SCAM for more cash ) and said she would call me back. I waited... she didn't - so I called my Gainesville FL vet who hasn't treated Oz since April of 2018 - they filled the prescription with NO hesitation AND mailed it to me within the hour I called them, USPS 2 day at NO additional cost. Had to CALL Avery ranch at 3 pm and say ' You know what don't worry about it - just send me my records' I cannot express to you enough how FRUSTRATING and poorly managed that place is as well as how badly they speak to and treat their PAYING customers. I spent well over $1000 in just 8 months and I get treated as if I ran out on my bill...DO NOT GO HERE. read more

Our family has used ARAH for the past 6 years after adopting our dog. ARAH has always been a wonderful experience. This past month, our dog needed a small, cancerous lump removed. Marjorie was the nurse who told me how everything would go in the surgery. She is such a kind, caring, and patient nurse, and reassured me she would be by my dogma side the whole time. Your experience will be directly impacted by the person you deal with at the front desk. Bevyn is wonderful & so is one other woman whose name escapes me (she's the mama of the German Shepherd). The rest of them are rude & act put out out by your existence. They emailed me a surgical quote for my dog and the attachment didn't come through, I emailed twice and called twice (over a 2 week period) to ask them to re send. Sadly I kept on getting the people who were aggravated by me-that was 3 months ago, I'm still waiting on that quote. In the meantime I found another vet to do the surgery. Dr.Skupin is cool but he needs more people like Bevyn and German Shepherd mom to pay closer attention to everyone else, they're rude & inefficient. Also, as stated by previous reviews they are "test & med" happy so be prepared to pay a small fortune for tests & meds that may or may not be needed. I'm never certain if this is necessary or just to make a quick buck. read more

They don't take any accountability if something happens to your pet. Would recommend going to any other vet. Went in for a routine dental extraction and our dog came out with a bruise that was black and purple all over his neck and body. Of course they had no idea what was wrong and didn't take any responsibility and just said to take him to an ER. Had to go to another vet to actually get some information and found out they were hiding the fact that they took blood from his neck, which is what caused it. read more

HORRIBLE experience for me and my CAT!!! As a local business owner I could never imagine treating anyone and their animal with such lack of care. Here is my story: My cat, Mis Mew, does not take well to other people as she is very timid and really likes to keep to herself and her human parents. So, I searched high and low for somewhere I felt comfortable and confident my daughter would be well cared for. The initial call was great and I felt that this was the place I could get my daughter examined and given care. I was even told this vet is "fear free" certified, meaning they do everything in their power to alleviate and keep their animal patients stress free! BINGO, that is what I had been looking for...... When I arrived to my appointment it was another story and I was flabbergasted by the despicable treatment! My quote of $1 for new patient exam and $67 for two shots in preparation of a dental cleaning went to $213!!! I asked why this was and they said the $1 exam was only M-F (and it was Saturday) and the other prices were missed quoted. I politely stated that the lady I initially spoke to told me the exam would be $1 and said nothing about M-F, in fact she was the one who provided me the quote AND scheduled my Saturday appointment. I asked if they would honor their quote and without hesitation said NO. I told them about my cats fear and anxiety and why after searching and searching I chose to bring my daughter to them. They did not flinch with the slightest care to the fear and anxiety my cat has over not only the vet, but people in general. Fear free certified? That is a joke!!! If they cared about the fear and anxiety of animals they would have honored their quote and given care to Miss Mew. Now, I have to find another vet and put my daughter through this traumatic experience AGAIN! At the end of the day, I would gladly pay the mere $213 or more to any vet who actually cares for the animals they treat then give this place $0.1. read more

I came here because I wasn't satisfied with my normal vet. My cat was suffering beyond reason and no one could help or tell me why. It turns out she had cancer in her jaw. Avery Ranch were so helpful and kind. They helped me with pricing and medicine to help her be comfortable while they diagnosed what was wrong and actually found the problem. I absolutely love this place! My wife and I take our two cats and service dog-in-training here. Customer service is exceptional; the staff is courteous and always answers any questions I might have over the phone, even if it requires them to leave their desk and find a veterinarian. Cats: They have fresh catnip growing in their garden outside and will give your felines a fresh leaf. They even allowed us to take some more on our way out. They are patient with our timid cat who tries to squirm out of the vet tech's grip and give her time to calm down with a soft snack. Dog: My service dog is a rescue from Texas Humane Heroes and is still in his service dog training, so I currently can not take him with me while I am out. When we found out he had severe separation anxiety, my wife and I were devastated. We have to crate him for three hours, four times a week and we were afraid that complaints from neighbors would force us to have to get rid of him. After explaining my situation to Dr. Skupin, he prescribed prozac, a temporary solution while my service dog completes his training, and then offered to let me drop my service dog off at the animal hospital for those three hour periods, four days a week until the prozac takes effect (2-3 weeks). Never have I experienced such a helpful and encouraging staff as that of Avery Ranch Animal Hospital. My wife and I were in a tough situation and in a lot of stress, worrying what was going to happen to my service dog, but Avery Ranch Animal Hospital came to the rescue! We are fortunate to have them as our primary care provider to our pets! If you are curious about them, take advantage of their $1exam for first time clients. I am sure you'll return! read more

I moved to Austin two years ago with my 5 year old Australian Cattle dog "Yardbird" from rural Maine where I had him since he was 9 weeks old. Until recently he had been raw fed with no vaccinations other than rabies. Since I had never had him on heart worm prevention (or flea prevention - I use cedar oil which works great) I was concerned about heart worms here in Texas. For this concern I called several local vets to have him tested and to begin some kind of heart worm prevention, including Cedar Park Veterinary Clinic (receptionist listened to my concerns and promised to return my call but never did) and Cypress Creek Pet Care (receptionist listened to my concerns then returned my call and told me they were not interested in taking me on as a customer.) I have read enough about the practice of modern veterinary medicine to be very skeptical of yearly vaccinations, all-in-one vaccinations, and the risks of over-vaccinating. I also had past experience with veterinary practices with multiple veterinarians in which I never knew who would see my animal. We would see a different veterinarian each visit and they had no prior experience with or knowledge of me or my animal because we had not seen them before. I've had the same experience with dentists in Austin and just recently found one Dentist who will see me each time and who I feel comfortable with. Don't other people need to know the doctor they are working with? I do. So I called Avery Ranch Animal Hospital and told the receptionist my concerns. No problem, we'll get you in this afternoon. They did and it was good. Bird had no heart worms and a stool sample revealed no internal parasites. Not that it is supported as scientific fact, but since Bird survived two years mountain biking in the bowels of Brushy Creek with no sign of heart worm or internal parasites (cross my fingers that tests won't reveal anything in 6 months when I have him tested again - I don't want to jinx this) I would say there could be something to raw feeding and minimal vaccinations/toxins promoting good health and a strong immune system. I dunno. The problem with raw feeding here in the Austin area is that (unlike in Maine) I have not been able to find a butcher to sell me cost-effective raw meat, so I have opted for what I hope is good quality grain-free dry dog food. The one thing I have noticed since going away from raw meat is that Bird has gained a little weight that perhaps he doesn't need. But we have not been hitting the trails for the last month and a half (since I have been working in the yard - Elise and I bought a house.) We'll need to pick that back up again, and I have slightly reduced the amount of this new dog food (victor) that I am feeding him, so I'll see how he looks next month. He does have a lot of muscle, and at 5 years perhaps his body is still growing? These are good questions for the good doctor. I don't know where this relationship with Dr Tim Skupin will go in the future, but for now I give him high marks for listening to my concerns and being willing to work with me to address them. I still am skeptical about how Heartgard REALLY impacts Bird's health, the frequency and amount that is REALLY required for the stuff to be effective, and other vaccination requirements - but Bird does need somebody other than me to keep him healthy and I have got to trust somebody. Dr Tim seems intelligent, sincere and he listened to my concerns. We engaged in a thoughtful and comfortable discussion about both our concerns, which is a lot more than any other vet in the Austin area has done with me. We lucked out with these guys. Not only is it just 2 minutes away, the service is also fantastic. We have two Golden Retrievers (Annie and Pelusa- The Golden Girls) who we rescued through Gold Ribbon Rescue. When you adopt adult dogs, you take 'em as is. Annie is a big beautiful blond (who would be a pro beach volleyball player if she was human) , and Pelusa is a petite redhead (with EVERYTHING that entails). Both in excellent health but Pelusa had BAD hip dysplasia (common in Goldens) that prevented her from walking any kind of distance. Dr. Skupin and crew put her on a glucosamine supplement, and doggy Motrin (Novox) and now she runs around and wrestles with the big one without any pain at all. She requires her liver enzymes to be checked every six months, but the clinic sends out reminder cards (addressed TO THE DOG:) when she needs this or any routine shots. They also call to confirm appointments, AND call with lab results- even the normal ones. I should get this kind of service from doctor's and dentist's offices. read more
