There is a reason I give this Avis 5 stars - Excellent Customer Service. Typically if an avis rental location shuts down at 6pm they shut their doors and go away no matter what. During our recent stay in Austin, we were stuck in traffic and would arrive to pick up the car from this location by 5:55pm (they close at 6pm). New to the neighborhood, it took us a while to look for this avis rental location inside the mall. All this while we kept the person at the front desk looped in about where we were and he was kind enough to not shut the store and walk out even though we got there at 6:05pm. He was very friendly and polite and completely understood our situation. He patiently explained all terms and conditions and also helped us save some money by not taking added insurance since we were already covered through another rental insurance. All in all this was amazing customer service I was very happy and impressed with. read more

This location/company rented my girlfriend a car the reeked of cigarette smoke. I called about it and was told that there was nothing they could until it was returned. Further down the road, the speedometer went out more than 250 miles left to travel. When I called again they said they would note the account. When we returned the vehicle, we were told by Haitham Salem, a true asshole, that there was nothing he would do. After a little back and forth, he offered $15. I told him old take it and call customer care. He then said he would give us nothing if we were going to call customer care. What the hell is that. I think he thought that the $15 was a pay off to keep us quiet? read more

This Avis location is a JOKE. It is the most Step-n-Fetch It place I ever been. I rented a vehicle from this location to avoid airport car rental fees, and parking for my personal vehicle. I walk into the Sears store to an empty rental counter to discover the rental agent was in the office playing video games or whatever on his laptop. I get my vehicle to discover there is not a GPS (which I requested when I made the reservation), went back into the office in which the rental agent was on his personal laptop, and he told me they did not have any GPS systems. This is despite the pictures advertising the GPS Navigation System. I never met a Step-n-Fetch it person before, but this guy was the epitome of the African-American stereotypical character. He did not know anything and was full of excuses. He told me I can go out to the airport to get a GPS. Note: I was very hot under the collar as I wanted to avoid the airport. So, I get in my rental car..angry and cut on the AC. Guess what? Whoever rented the vehicle before me was a smoker and Avis made a futile attempt to clean out the smell. F**K! So, I had to go to the airport anyway to get a new vehicle! Should have kept my original reservation. Anyway I get a new vehicle at the airport. I was satisfied. The next day I arrive at the Sears Avis location to return my rental. Guess what? The stupid rental agent was nowhere to be found, There was not an out to lunch sign...nothing. I call the counter number only for the phone to ring repeatedly at the counter. I got someone at customer service and told her my dilemma. I told Ms, Customer Service I am leaving the keys in the office desk with a note and for the missing agent (Step-n-Fetch it) to email my receipt. Wait a minute this is not the end of the story. I get out to my vehicle to discover I have a "warning ticket" from the Barton Creek Mall security because my car was parked overnight. WTF? I called the security office and the mall office to discover the Avis was supposed to notify Mall Security my vehicle was parked in the lot, as if my business trip would have been more than 24-hours my car would have been towed. Freaking idiots. I will never use this location and will not recommend it to anyone! read more

Never, never, never rent a car from Avis. I paid $782 for the trip of a lifetime down the Oregon and California coast to Sedona, AZ and back to Texas. Best rate I could find. Now I know why. After returning the car in perfect condition and on time, they have charged my debit card over $300. Hard to get hold of them to fix the overcharge. I needed a van to tote us and our stuff out of town. Found out on my last trip that renting away from the airport is the secret. Then I realized there was a rental counter at Barton Creek Mall. Avis gave me a decent deal (found a coupon code online), but as usually goes when you rent a vehicle, you're not getting the best car around. We got a Dodge Grand Caravan, and while it had low miles and wasn't a total wreck, I was unsure how well it had been cared for. We did manage to go on our trip without an incident, so that's fine. The van also had a Sirius subscription, which is very sweet on long trips around Texas where radio choices can get slim. Pick up and drop off could get stressful though. When I showed up, I managed to beat two other people in the door who were coming to pick a car up too. There was one lonely employee there, and we waited a while for him to get back inside from the lot. There's a sign on the counter saying the phone is forwarded so just call when you show up. When I was picking up, this rolled over to Avis' 800 number for reservations. When I came to drop it off, he did pick up and came in to help me out. The guy wasn't unfriendly or unwilling to help, which was nice. I'm not quite sure what Avis can do to make me give them more stars though. read more

I needed a rental because both of my cars were in the shop. I went to their location in the Sears at the BC mall around 1:30 that afternoon. I told the guy at the counter that I'd like the discount that applies to renters who have cars in the shop. He told me that the fee would be $54 for the first day and $10 for each additional day. I thought this sounded good so I agreed. It was all downhill from there. The "non-smoking" car they gave me smelled heavily of smoke. I ended up rolling the windows down for the last half of my trip home. When I returned the car the next day at 5:30 pm, I was shocked to see that my bill was for $110! This was not in line with what the attendant told me from the day before. There was another guy working there this evening and he told me how once the 24 hour mark was reached, most of the charges for a additional day kick in. When I told him about the $10/additional day quote I got the day before from another attendant, he gave me an explanation that basically led me to believe that the attendant from the day before really didn't know what he was talking about. I should have gotten it in writing, and so should you fellow yelpers if you ever dare rent from this location. Bottom line - I rented a nauseating smelling car for 28 hours and it cost me $110. DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM THIS LOCATION!!!!! I REPEAT DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM THIS LOCATION. YOU ARE BETTER OFF THE AIRPORT AND PAYING THE EXTRA FEE. Let me explain. I was planning a trip to El Paso for Thanksgiving holiday to see my mom on her birthday (her b-day was on Thanksgiving this year). I reserve a car through the Avis website, a full size car. My reservation was successful so I expect that the car I reserve will be ready for me at this location when I arrive. WRONG!!! The lady behind the counter did not look or act professional. She tells me that they do not have the impala there as I reserved but did have another full size car. She assigns me the Chrysler 200 in which she assures me it is a full size car after I question her about it. My wife drives it home and I follow in our car. The next day I get in the car and quickly notice that this car is not a full size car as she assured me. I check on the Avis website to find out this car is actually 2 sizes smaller than a full size (how could she be so oblivious, or if not just outright lie to a customer). I call the desk back and get the same stellar employee. She tells me that in fact the Chrysler 200 is full size and they are out of any other cars. After pressing her further she puts me on hold and comes back and says, well its 1 size lower but definitely not 2. Instead of arguing this I ask her what can be done to get us a full size car. "your going to have to drive to the airport or call corporate" she says (as it seems most the employees tell customers who are not satisfied). We were about to start a 9 hour trip and the airport would set us back 2 hours, nor should I have to go out of my way to address their mess up. So I ask for her boss instead of calling corporate as I feel they should own this, she gives me the number to "Jim". I call Jim and explain my situation. He quickly defends his employee but does say he will see what he can do. He calls back 15 minutes later and says I can either drive to the airport or take a 12 passenger van..... Obviously both options wouldn't work for me so I passed and said "oh well". We arrive from our trip on Saturday and I return the car. Jim said to call him to ensure we are billed correctly as I see I have a pending charge for the full size price of 190. So I call him and let him know I am now seeing a charge of 30 dollars more than the full size price (total 220). He says he will take care of it and give me a 50 dollar discount to make up for my troubles (50 bucks off the smaller car size price we received). He finally calls me today and lets me know he was able to remove the 50 bucks off the 220 charge . Unfortunately this means I am still paying 10 dollars more than what the normal price would be for the car size I received (im still paying 170 which is more than what I would have been billed for the intermediate car I received). Once I bring this to his attention he says "this is all I can do for you, if you want to do something else then call the customer support line". (I think: Your the damn manager Jim, do your job!!!). I press him to handle this himself as he is the manager and he HANGS UP ON ME!!! I kid you not. So now I am stuck paying more than I should for the size of car I received and spent 2 hours talking to Jim and his cronies with no help. Horrible horrible horrible experience. DO NOT RENT CARS FROM HERE unless you want to be overcharged and have horrible customer experience. Jim you don't deserve to be a manager. Your manager is either blind or incompetent to keep you and your employees around. Every person who works here does not know what customer service means. read more

I wrecked my car this morning (CRAP!!) and I knew where to have it towed to, but my dilemma was where to get the rental from. I have coverage through State Farm with rental reimbursement. I called the company I usually use they didn't have anything then so I would have to wait until the afternoon. And I would have to pay and be reimbursed personally by my insurance (new issue since February!) So, I found the Avis at Barton Creek Mall (near my office). They had MY CAR available, right then and there. They obtained the information from my insurance company and they will even verify with the repair shop that my car will be repaired in time. If not, then Michael at Avis will call State Farm to extend my rental coverage. Super nice guy, very clean car. I'm a happy camper!!! read more

This is also a sister location for Budget Rent-a-Car, for whom this review is written. Unfortunately, there is no "Budget" listing for this location on Yelp. Approximately January 13-14, 2015, I booked a 2WD FULL SIZE pickup truck (Ford F150 or similar) for 6 days in order to see ailing family in NY, then return to Texas via Indiana. The ultimate goal for renting a pickup was to close out my storage unit, where I had stuff stored for a number of years. The cost of this rental for 6 days was almost $400. I arrived at the rental location via taxi on January 15 at 11am to see only ONE pickup truck in the lot. A quick glance I saw it was a Nissan, something I'd never driven in the past, so I was somewhat excited. After we got all the paperwork out of the way, he pulled a silver 2015(?) Nissan Frontier out front, the same vehicle I spotted in the lot. Immediately my concern was this was NOT a full-size pickup truck, and that I would not be able to remove all of my items from storage in Indiana. The manager assured me that "this is the same as an F150, but the cab was bigger, which is why the bed was smaller". Knowing the difference, I was awe struck at his ignorance from the stand point of someone who deals with vehicles for his living. A quick check on my phone proved that wrong, and that in fact Nissan's FULL SIZE truck was the Titan model, not a Frontier. Approximately January 19-20, 2015, I loaded this truck to the gills, leaving behind about $1000 in furniture & belongings (mattress, boxspring, TV cabinet) in Indiana. I had to give them away because I wasn't going to keep a unit opened there. I called their centralized customer service line, and was told to talk it over with the local manager. A partial refund of approximately $100-150 was requested, due to forsaking large items behind that should have easily fit into a Ford F150 (or similar) like they did when I rented from this same location in March 2014. On January 21, I returned the vehicle. Upon the recommendation of customer service, I requested a partial refund, and he pretty much blew me off. Wouldn't even address the issue with me. On February 13, three weeks after returning the vehicle & to no resolution, I contacted their customer service department at 800-527-7000. The lady with whom I spoke told me that their charges would be upheld, and that a refund of any kind was not likely. So I'm out a bunch of furniture AND $400 for a sub-par vehicle, with which both Budget's reservation line & the location seem totally OK because they were unable to provide me with the vehicle THAT I REQUESTED, but rented me 'the next best thing...FOR THE SAME PRICE!!!'. She also said that a Nissan Frontier, so far as they were concerned, fell into the same category as a Ford F150. I STRONGLY DISAGREE, and I've never owned a pickup truck in my entire life. I know the difference between the two, and a Nissan Frontier would be the equivalent of a Colorado / Tacoma / Ranger, whereas the F150 is like a Chevy 1500, Toyota Tundra, or yes...a Nissan TITAN (not a Frontier). I will NOT be using this location again. It's the 2nd time I rented from them, the first of which was decent (when I got the F150 advertised). But this was inexcusable, as the obvious size problem was pointed out to the manager before driving off with the vehicle. Confirmation of that was when I was unable to bring my belongings back, the truck was indeed FAR TOO SMALL. read more

Renting a car is usually a big hassle. I had friends in town from Amsterdam who were trying to rent a car at the Enterprise over on I35. They tried to charge them $350 for three days for a car, because they were foreign and pretty much trying to scam them. They called me for help and I booked a rental for $146 on Priceline (regular Priceline not name your own price) and called three separate times to the front desk of Avis in Sears at the Barton Creek Mall to verify that my international friends could rent this car. Clark was the representative I dealt with and he was the nicest rental car representative I could ask for. I'm quite the high strung person and when I finally brought my friends to the mall to pick up our reservation, I calmed down because he gave me the sense that this would work out no matter what. We walked in, my friend gave in their information, we got everything squared away and walked out with a car. It was so simple and easy I was shocked. Clark met our needs so quickly and professionally that I will now be renting my cars there in the future. Thank you Clark for helping us turn an extremely hectic day into a great one. Horrible. This is not Avis and it's not Budget. It's an independently owned franchise called "Extra Wheel LLC" - there's a sign that clearly states this on their desk. Their hours of operation are ridiculous. They close at 2pm on Saturdays and 3pm on Sundays. In September 2014, I showed up to pick up a reservation I had made weeks earlier. I got there to pick up the car on Saturday at 3pm, and they were closed. My fault, I guess, because they have their hours clearly posted online and on the door. I guess I forgot to check for any weird, random rules about when you can pick up a car. I returned to pick up the car on Sunday morning. Instead of honoring my discounted reservation, they made me make a new, last-minute reservation at a MUCH higher price. In February 2015, I made 2 reservations with them and had bad experiences both times. I have received bad service here from 2 individuals on 3 occasions. I have made 3 reservations, and all 3 times I have been given a car much different from the car I requested - while still being charged for the car I actually requested. I wasn't upset enough to post a review the first 2 times, but I guess the third time was the straw that broke the camel's back. This business is doing it all wrong. For me, it's worth the drive to the airport to avoid this place in the future. read more

I am not a fan of rental car company's but this one was as good as could be expected from my experience. Located in the Sears auto repair entrance they were pretty easy to find. According to their sign, this is an independently owned rental agency. I rented a mini van for a long trip with kids using credit card miles so it was prepaid, however I needed the van a day early. I spoke with Jim (last name escapes me) and he said it wouldn't be a problem and did all of the computer work to add the additional day and let me pick it up early. A nice Chrysler Town & Country Touring (new - only 5700 miles on it) was waiting at the designated pick up time. Surprisingly, there was really no hassle at all, and no additional fee which was even more surprising! Pick up and drop off were quick and easy. I don't rent vehicles in Austin very often but I had no problems with this location and Jim was very helpful. I would use them again if necessary and if the price was right. read more

We will never rent from budget ever again. The whole rental was the biggest sham of the face of this planet. From road side assistance to customer service to the local owner. First issue, the car broke down on the side of the road 2 days into our 2 1/2 week road trip. I'm understanding about this part all car models have lemons, so even a brand new van can break down. We call road side assistance and let them know what our problem is, the transmisson went out and that we are stuck oj the side of the road 30 miles from the nearest town. After some questions and being put im hold a few times, we were told that they could call a tow truck for the van, that the tow could only bring 2 people back to town with it, the other 3 people were expected to find their own way into town, and they couod not get us another rental vehicle at all since we were close enough to any of there locals, about 1.5 to 2 hours from the closest one. Telling them this was unacceptable, the person agree but told us to call back if she wanted to send the tow. After we hung up, we called the customer service number, and they told us that road side assistance had no right to tell us that. We were immediately transfered to a manager from road side assistance. All in all we broke down at 10am and did not get into town until 2. The second issue was the car that they did end up finding for us. We had rented a 12 passenger van. During these 2 1/2 weeks we were going to be gone, we would be camping, so we had a lot of stuff that we had to take with is. The vehicle they found for us was a 5 passenger vehicle that took 5 pieces of luggage. They told us that we could trade it in as soon as we found a place that another one. Again we told them that this was unacceptable since there was no way all 5 people and all of our things could fit in the car. After another 2 hours on the phone, they found us another van 2.5 hours away that we could go pick up. They also paid for a hotel room, upon our request, so we could drop off our equipment to be able to drive the 5 hours round trip in the 5 passenger that they brought to go get the van that we needed. The supervisor also told us that for all the confusion and headache that she would take 30% off the cost of the rental. Minus the fact that it took so long to get everything done, in the end, we were happy to be back on the road and be able to finish our vacation without having to change much of out plans. The third issue, we had taken the back two seats out of the van to give us more room to put luggage. We had looked over the agreement contract and did not see anything prohibiting it. While in the process of getting vehicles switched out, we told the customer service supervisor that we had taken them out. She told us it was against policy to take them out, but because of all the headache all we had to do was return them back when we returned our new van. When we got to the original rental place, to turn everything in, the local budget owner very rudely told us that he would not take the seats. Instead of arguing we returned the van, and called customer service again. After another hour of questions and holds, we were told that there was no record of the conversation that we had had with the last person and that we would be responsible for getting the seat from Texas to Wyoming. Also during this pocess, customer service called and the owner told them we were not at the site even though we were right in his line site and we had just told them that the customer service was about to call them. All and all, we spent 8 hours waiting around on and off the phone, only to be told differnet things, stuck with 2 seats, only received a 10% discount, and had thr owner lie to customer service. Needless to say, worst customer service ever. The company really dies not care about their customers and is more interested in making money. We will never rent from Budget ever again. This trip has definitely made us an Enterpise family for life. read more
