There was a short line of people waiting to get checked in when we arrived to the desk but only one agent. The wait time was 40 minutes (which I timed). A second agent joined about 30 minutes into our wait but she clearly was more interested in her phone than helping the other agent. Poor management. You know when people are arriving, yet it was not properly staffed. I have not used Avis in a long time and I was reminded why. I had a similar experience year ago at National airport. The vehicle's tires are below the safe tread depth and could contribute to an accident under any inclement weather. Second, the actual vehicle mileage that I noted in a photo is higher than the mileage stamped on the Avis paperwork. This mileage discrepancy might be why the tires haven't been replaced. Is zero stars available. We reserved and rented a high end 4wd anticipating weather, and purchased the refuel option. The Denali wreaked of cigarette smoke and the fuel tank was barely 3/4 full. There were no staff available on the lot to help at around midnight and we did not want to go back through the line given our tired flight and the time of night/morning. We had to drive with the windows down the entire time. Customer support after the fact offered an insincere and boilerplate apology. There are other options at CLE and I highly suggest you stay away from Avis--given the lack of quality and expense. read more

To start with the Rental Car Industry across the board is a disaster, it appears the pandemic and poor business decisions has devastated this industry - being a business traveler for decades it easy for me to see just how much this industry has declined. This particular incident started at the time of the booking with multiple disclaimer that due to a shortage of rental vehicles the availability ,selection, pricing and pickup location can change. I find these proclamations a little unsettling after my history of renting hundreds of cars over the years, admittedly mostly from one brand but today after my loyalty was rejected at my go to vendor I decided it was time to start shopping. The nightmare started on 12/4 when I hit the reserve button for a rental starting mid-day 12/6 through the early morning hours of 12/8 - although I wasn't super excited about the price ($453) I had no choice since all the rental companies operating out of Cleveland Hopkins Airport were out of cars for those dates. After arriving at the Avis Rental Counter I noticed the complex was nearly empty and those that were there without a reservation were a little disappointed that they were turned away - well I was never so thankful to have a reservation and that I had pre-paid 100% of the cost upfront. I approached the counter with my confirmation number in hand, only to get a blank stare and a few sidebar conversations between the staff - and then 15 minute of the sound of fingers banging on a keyboard before hearing we have a car but it is a lower class than you reserved, so I asked what the price adjustment would be only to be told that this car is actually in the same class being they have no others - huh? Well after more than an hour at the counter my chariot arrived a beaten, dirty crashed Ford Explorer with nearly 50K miles on it - this filthy rattle trap hadn't seen a wash bay in sometime and smelt like a cheap cigar shop - okay they got me I have no choice so I jumped in and exited the lot mumbling unkind words to myself. Fast forward to 5:00 AM 12/8 - after fueling this beast at the nearby Circle K I pulled into the rental car return lot which was manned by an after hours security person, I grabbed my bags and dropped the keys in the drop box and headed for the airport rental car bus - a few hours later as I sipped a morning cocktail in the United Club I received my email receipt - I'm pretty sure my reaction after opening the PDF was WTF - final cost for a rental that I had in my possession for less than 48 hours ($854). Well we all understand it's not always about the mistake it's more about the final outcome and how the problem is resolved so this wasn't over. Well after an hour on the phone with a customer service representative and making my case tactfully and professionally and after getting put on hold several times Avis accepted responsibility and promised a fund to my credit card in the amount of ($401) within 5 business days - so if this happens all is forgiven and I'll be smarter for it and won't be returning to this location... read more

We had an early morning flight and we really appreciated their help getting us to the airport as well as not letting me leave with the keys. I made the reservation online at $52.00 a day, but when I showed up, the rate was suddenly around $100 a day for an economy car. I say "around" because the total wasn't clear or itemized. When I booked, the total was clear, but it couldn't be saved--you have to access it through an Avis link. At the airport, they changed that link, erasing the original. This is done to rip you off, since you can't go back and view your original reservation. read more

The lady behind the counter was clearly annoyed that I had come back in. Had to wait another 30 min to get one that clearly smelled like smoke and had so much damage on it. Looked like it had been towed because there was white lettering on the back seat door. I took the car because I was exhausted and thought it would air out. It didn't and the cigarette smell was giving me a headache so I went and swapped cars. Is it a requirement for Avis to be horrible. I have the worst experiences no matter wear I go. Reserved a car here through Costco recently. A few days before my rental, I got a confirmation from Costco and noted that the rate was higher than I had been quoted. Called the Avis 800# but they said they couldn't do anything and I'd need to check at the airport. My car was in my Preferred spot but I went to the booth to inquire about the rate difference. My, was the woman there unpleasant. She accused me of possibly having made multiple reservations through Costco and forgetting to cancel. Um, no. My company likes me to use Avis. I do remember when they "Tried Harder" and were a decent company to rent with. While we do get a great corporate rate, I don't like their little hidden tricks. First of all, I was assigned a car and told where my car was parked virtually. I was also provided a QR code to exit the lot quickly. I did like that. It was probably the fastest I was ever able to leave a rental car facility. My car was pretty dirty, though---both inside and outside. The hidden trick was not providing me with an invoice right away, but instead sending an email later. When checking the emailed invoice, I noticed a $20 refueling charge. This was after I had put $20 of gas in the car. When I proved that I had put 5.5 gallons of gas in the car, they adjusted the invoice and removed the charge. I supposedly traveled 100 miles during my rental in a Nissan Altima. Wow---that's less than 20 MPG. I told Avis they owed me money for not filling the tank. This is the second time Avis added refueling charges. I've informed my company of the unethical practice hoping they will switch us back to the other rental company we used to use. read more

Sent me from the CLE airport with an EV Car with less than 50% charge to return at CAK... the person who assigned this car must LACK intelligence (the nicest way I can put it) since the CAK airport alone is more than an hour drive and that was not my final destination from CLE on 12/11 at 11:30PM when it was a complete blizzard out. Would you really send someone with an 1/8th of tank of gas to set out? Seriously??? The roads were absolutely snow covered and if I had to stop anywhere along the way I would have never made it. We rented a car over the weekend for a funeral . I made a reservation online through the app. You will have to shuttle to and from the airport so make sure you have time for that . We were helped immediately and to our rental within about 10 minutes. It wasn't over the top friendly but it was efficient. We had requested a Kia soul and provided a Jeep Cherokee. It was a bit beat up on the outside but the inside was clean and the car ran nicely and the tank was full. We drove it approximately 100 miles total. Returning the vehicle was just as efficient and easy -we did not have any issues. The bill was as stated and no additional charges were made. I was hesitant to rent from them because of reviews however, we had a good experience so we would go back to them in the future. read more

Zero stars. Let me begin by saying that I did not intend to look for the cheapest deal or to rent from Avis, but needed a car on Jan 1 and my go-to of Hertz was closed. I was concerned about Avis' low customer service rating, but decided to try and hope for the best. Our flight was due to arrive in Cleveland from DFW at 8:30 PM, but delays and a connection across gates caused us to miss that flight out of DFW, so we were rebooked on a later flight arriving in Cleveland just after midnight. I immediately called Avis to verify whether I would still be able to pick up my car. Despite calling the local Cleveland number and multiple attempts through the menus, I could only reach a national representative. Nonetheless, I gave her my information and she assured me that she had changed my flight number in the system and that desk representatives would stay until the last flight had landed. I asked several times to confirm that there would be someone there after midnight despite their advertised hours closing then. She assured me again that the flight number was in the system and they would wait for the last flight. You can probably guess the rest of the story. After gathering bags and riding a shuttle to the rental facility, we arrived there around 12:45, only to be told by the security guard that the desk had closed at midnight. Thankfully, there was one representative present from another company. I promptly rented a car from them and canceled my Avis reservation online, only to receive the final insult to injury of my cancelation confirmation informing me that I would not receive any refund due to the terms of my rental. I would have understood if their desk closed at midnight and they had told me that when I called about the flight change, but I was repeatedly reassured that they would stay later for my flight, only to realize there seemed to be no such policy/communication. In speaking to the one representative from the other company who helped me rent a car, he said that this "happens all of the time" with Avis, so it seems it was not a one time mistake but rather their way of doing business. Another issue was the fact that when I called about the flight change, I was not able to speak with anyone actually present in Cleveland, but only reach a national call center. Anyone actually at the Cleveland desk would have been able to either tell me that they would be leaving at midnight or that they personally could stay later, and they would have known to do so. The inability to reach a local rep may save money for the company, but requires seamless communication and clear, uniform policies to implement, none of which seem to be the case with Avis. I cannot describe my anger at this situation and will tell everyone with whom I have contact to avoid Avis at all cost. read more

Unlike all of the poor reviews I see on Yelp for this Avis location - my first time using Avis at CLE was good. My car was booked by our internal travel service and we have Avis Preferred Service. We used to use Hertz and I've used Hertz at CLE many times, so I was wondering how the Avis experience would be. When I got to the Preferred Service members board - the board referred me to the Preferred Services desk - no space number was listed next to my name. There was only one person in line in front of me - so I only had to wait a minute or so. The agent processed my reservation and handed me my car keys. I advised this was my first time at Avis at CLE and I asked why there was no space number on the board next to my name. He replied that on Mondays - they have such a large demand for cars that at times they can't keep up, which leads to them assigning cars at the last minute. Might be time for a bigger Avis facility to keep up! When I returned the car, the agent was right there to scan the barcode on the car, check things out and hand me a receipt. My family of seven (my wife and 5 small children) rented an SUV from Avis at Cleveland, Ohio airport. We upgraded to further support this business to a Denali. All was fine until we left the airport and started driving. On the highway our back rear drivers side tire suddenly went flat and I almost lost control of the vehicle, endangering my large family. We were very surprised that this suddenly happened. We called AVIS and they tried to deny responsibility. That was until we looked at the keychain to give the rep details on the vehicle when we noticed that the keychain specifically posted the word FLAT!!! AVIS rented my family a knowingly disabled vehicle and put my family in grave danger! There is absolutely no excuse for this incompetence and I am enraged with AVIS. Not only did they give us problems about replacing the vehicle, but they wasted two full days of our vacation. At this point I have been considering taking legal action against AVIS, as this is a serious problem. At the very least I want the full amount of the rental charge to be credited back to my credit card. Again, there is zero excuse for this event and I am very upset. read more

I really hate to leave a negative review as I typically am not that called writing reviews. My experience with Avis and Budget at the CLE airport was horrendous! After arriving in CLE on a red eye from San Francisco, There was an agent sitting at the Budget desk, where we had reserved a vehicle. She stated she would not help me because they were not open til 8am. It was 6:30 am. When I went to the Avis counter, the woman there was telling me she couldn't help me while I was second in line patiently waiting for her assistance, because I had a Budget rental and Budget didn't open until 8. Then once I told her I was willing to cancel my reservation with Budget to see if she could help me get on the road faster she said, "why would I do that when you have a Budget rental? I will just look up that reservation anyway." It was ridiculous "service" for a customer truly just trying to get to their destination after hours of overnight travel and hours yet to drive. I am extremely disappointed in their lack of service, or compassion. When I went back to the Budget desk there was a notice up to go to the Avis desk for assistance, which is precisely what I did! If all the desks have staff why would they not have service at one company and have a person sitting at the counter and have a sign directing people to their sister agency? It was a conundrum all around and Enterprise got my money, and rented me a car for less then what they quoted me anyway. I was on the road at 8 am but what a hassle! read more

TIP: Please be sure to check your final receipt and verify if they charged you a "Fuel Service" for $15.99 (plus local tax) that you likely opted out of. When you call in, they'll want the details of what gas station you filled at name/address, date/time, dollar amount and gallon amount. They say you get charged if you don't refill - apparently they'll also charge if you do refill and they can get away with it. This account happened in Cleveland, Ohio. I prepaid for a toyota camry June 1,2023 to be picked up on June 21st at 4:30pm. They sent me a confirmation text the day before. But at 3pm on the 21st they called me and said they had no cars. I went to the office the lady sent me to the downtown office where they had a Chevy Malibu held for me but when I got there they didn't accept prepaid make it make sense that means they already had my money didn't have to wait for it, after talking to 4 people including 2 rental special ist supervisors I was told to go back to Shaker Heights in the morning and they would have to get me a car. I went there and the young man said he had 37 reservations for today and other people who didn't get there car yesterday to take care of, I told him but I am the only one standing here and you have two cars he wouldn't help me! Call customer service was all he would say well customer service sent me to the airport and they wanted $737 more than what I had paid when I prepaid they had a 35% sale going on, I couldn't afford that! I have prepaid and pre-booked hotels from Louisville,KY to Destin, FL and no car to get there! I will never ever ever rent anything from Avis Car Rental Again! If I could give 0 stars I would. My whole experience started off poorly during the pick up process. I am an Avis Preferred member and I arrived at their parking lot around 2300. Their preferred booth was closed so I had to go stand in the regular line, which I didn't think would be a big deal because there was only 2 people in line. But, I was wrong. It took the employees working there over 50 minutes to process those two people and at the same time the line is piling up behind me. I finally got into my car around midnight, and I noticed there was trash and dirt all over the car and it had a weird smell. I decided to accept the car anyways because who knows how long I would have to wait in line to change cars especially since I had a two hour drive ahead of me. I had the car for a few days and returned the car with a normal amount of dirt and salt expected from the snowy conditions. At drop off, there was no problem and, after inspection, the employee said the car was fine. Over a week later, I receive an email from Avis saying I am being charged a $250 cleaning fee. This is obscured and unreasonable for a quick vacuum of the front seats. I contacted their customer support and they proved to be useless. I would advise against renting from Avis. I have rented many cars before and this was by far the worst experience I have ever had. read more
