I really hate to leave a negative review as I typically am not that called writing reviews. My experience with Avis and Budget at the CLE airport was horrendous! After arriving in CLE on a red eye from San Francisco, There was an agent sitting at the Budget desk, where we had reserved a vehicle. She stated she would not help me because they were not open til 8am. It was 6:30 am. When I went to the Avis counter, the woman there was telling me she couldn't help me while I was second in line patiently waiting for her assistance, because I had a Budget rental and Budget didn't open until 8. Then once I told her I was willing to cancel my reservation with Budget to see if she could help me get on the road faster she said, "why would I do that when you have a Budget rental? I will just look up that reservation anyway." It was ridiculous "service" for a customer truly just trying to get to their destination after hours of overnight travel and hours yet to drive. I am extremely disappointed in their lack of service, or compassion. When I went back to the Budget desk there was a notice up to go to the Avis desk for assistance, which is precisely what I did! If all the desks have staff why would they not have service at one company and have a person sitting at the counter and have a sign directing people to their sister agency? It was a conundrum all around and Enterprise got my money, and rented me a car for less then what they quoted me anyway. I was on the road at 8 am but what a hassle! read more

I prepaid for a toyota camry June 1,2023 to be picked up on June 21st at 4:30pm. They sent me a confirmation text the day before. But at 3pm on the 21st they called me and said they had no cars. I went to the office the lady sent me to the downtown office where they had a Chevy Malibu held for me but when I got there they didn't accept prepaid make it make sense that means they already had my money didn't have to wait for it, after talking to 4 people including 2 rental special ist supervisors I was told to go back to Shaker Heights in the morning and they would have to get me a car. I went there and the young man said he had 37 reservations for today and other people who didn't get there car yesterday to take care of, I told him but I am the only one standing here and you have two cars he wouldn't help me! Call customer service was all he would say well customer service sent me to the airport and they wanted $737 more than what I had paid when I prepaid they had a 35% sale going on, I couldn't afford that! I have prepaid and pre-booked hotels from Louisville,KY to Destin, FL and no car to get there! I will never ever ever rent anything from Avis Car Rental Again! We are frequent Avis customers but their rental car service in Cleveland, OH is a nightmare. They reserved a Ford Edge for us. When we got to the car and turned the key, the Service Required light came on. We traded that for a Chevy Equinox. The car had animal hair all over it and smelled of smoke. They were only willing to refund $50.00. Forget about the emails they send stating they clean these cars thoroughly due to COVID. These were the filthiest vehicles at a rental location we have ever seen. I will be reporting them to the Health Department. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. My whole experience started off poorly during the pick up process. I am an Avis Preferred member and I arrived at their parking lot around 2300. Their preferred booth was closed so I had to go stand in the regular line, which I didn't think would be a big deal because there was only 2 people in line. But, I was wrong. It took the employees working there over 50 minutes to process those two people and at the same time the line is piling up behind me. I finally got into my car around midnight, and I noticed there was trash and dirt all over the car and it had a weird smell. I decided to accept the car anyways because who knows how long I would have to wait in line to change cars especially since I had a two hour drive ahead of me. I had the car for a few days and returned the car with a normal amount of dirt and salt expected from the snowy conditions. At drop off, there was no problem and, after inspection, the employee said the car was fine. Over a week later, I receive an email from Avis saying I am being charged a $250 cleaning fee. This is obscured and unreasonable for a quick vacuum of the front seats. I contacted their customer support and they proved to be useless. I would advise against renting from Avis. I have rented many cars before and this was by far the worst experience I have ever had. read more

The counter closed before 11:30pm, we were assured someone would remain at the counter, and provided our flight info so the counter person could check our flight status. That did NOT HAPPEN. The other car rental counters had a rep waiting for late arrivals, not Avis. We were told by the other rental car rep's "oh they left a long time ago". Should have read the reviews before I booked. My main issue was with the customer service agent when I arrived to pick up my car (who was wearing his mask on his chin, but I digress). I got to the rental car center late on a Saturday so I get it, he probably didn't want to be there. There was one person ahead of me. He wasn't speaking to her. When It was my turn, same thing. He didn't greet me, no hello, nothing. I know the drill so I handed him my ID and credit card. When it came time to electronically sign I just did it, no instruction from him. Only thing he said to me the entire time was B13. Gee, thanks, welcome to Cleveland I guess. The car itself was fine. It seemed clean. They didn't provide a snow scraper which was odd since other places have when I rented in the winter. Thankfully It didn't snow enough to need it or I guess I would have had to purchase one myself and then donate it to Avis. The guy at the security exit was nice, so was the person I returned my car to. Because of them I bumped it to a two otherwise I'd have given a one. read more

The most awful rental car service I've ever used. Plane landed at 10:50pm. Got to Avis at 11:00pm. Was finally granted our car at 1am!!!! When we left there was still a line of about 7 parties behind us. The attendant was not kind, or trying to move quickly. We missed the entire first day of our rental for this. Ask for the money back that we had already paid for in our reservation and we're granted nothing. I have heard that even when refilling your tank before dropping back off your car, you get charged again, will keep updated. read more

Terrible! Extremely long wait. I booked reservation online directly with Budget. When I landed, I took the bus to the rental area and approached the Budget counter. I was second in line and was patiently waiting my turn. After the person in front of me was done, the Budget representative informed me she was off to lunch which is why she put a sign up to go to the Avis counter. The sign was at a different window than the window the representative was at so it was not clear. She should have said something to me as soon as I got in line! Between me getting in line at the Budget counter to when the representative told me to go to Avis counter, multiple people walked in for Avis so I had to go to the end of a very long line. They only had 1 person working! As much as they are charging for rental cars nowadays, they can afford to pay for more than 1 employee at a time. When I finally reached the counter, the only words the representative said was "C9" to let me know where my car was. I reserved a Prius but when I reached C9, I learned they put me in a Ford EcoSport...whatever. Pay a few extra bucks and go to Enterprise who always has multiple employees working and quick check in/short wait times. read more

Their Yelp average is atrocious and reading a few reviews made me a little apprehensive. We experienced zero problems, however. I have Avis Preferred Plus thanks to work (not that I've ever rented for work). I booked online and the rate was surprisingly better than anything else I could find. And that's taking into consideration that we were doing a one-way rental to CVG (Cincinnati), so we had to pay for each mile used. Landing at CLE, I got a notification through the Avis app that I couldn't pick a car but that one would be ready when we arrive. The rental facility is a convenient shuttle ride down the road. We walked straight to the Preferred booth and we were in our car in no time. We ended up with a Kia Soul that was clean and more than adequate for our needs. Our experience at this Avis was minimal, but that's an indicator of a successful transaction. read more

Booked my car online as most do. Selected a luxury car. Was give a Buick LaCrosse at check in which is considered a Premium car listed on the website. So basically I was downgraded from what I booked. While driving the car I noticed it was all over the road. I first thought it was because I was not used to the car and the wet conditions on the road. Nope. It was because the car had had a flat tire at one point and it was replaced with a bald used tire on the the front passenger side. I had the car for 5 days and it never handled well. The day before I returned the car I was sent a text from Avis that the car was returned. I found this funny as I still had the car and was 200 miles from the rental facility. When I did return the car, I showed the the agent the tires. He took the car out of service and admitted that the car was unsafe and should have never been rented. He was very helpful and very pleasant to deal with. Because of the issue that the system showed I had returned the car early I had to go to the counter inside the rental center to check out. After waiting in line for 30 minutes and explaining the issues of the car I was told sorry but there is nothing they can do. Lesson learned. Inspect the car and the tires before you drive off the lot! read more

Easy In, not so easy out. Picking up the car was a breeze and the customer service was pretty decent. However returning the car is not the easiest. Finding the rental car place proved to be a bit confusing. Its not exactly next to the airport and there aren't many signs telling you where to go. If you are not from Cleveland and don't know your way around you may have some trouble finding the rental car location. However you can do like I did and just follow a shuttle bus. You don't want to burn all the gas you just bought to fill the tank up. Upon returning the car we were informed of some extra charges for coverage that was not properly explained when we picked up the car. However the manager was very nice and took the charges off of our bill. He gave us his card and told us if we needed anything else just to give him a call. I'd say he provided us with excellent customer service. Although we were initially jaded about extra charges, this went away immediately once the manager resolved the problem. I'd rent from Avis again because of the friendly employees and fairly quick service. Also the car we received was very fuel efficient, which is a big plus. read more

THIEVES!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Unfortunately I see now that everyone who uses this particular rental company has as terrible of an experience as I did. Long story short, I booked and paid for my rental car through Priceline (as I have done many times before without any problem) and when I return home from my trip find I have been DOUBLE-CHARGED by Avis for another amount equal to what I paid through Priceline! Straight-up SHADY. I have been calling customer service for days now, getting hung up on, and transferred to every department but with no resolution. The latest I heard from a rep was that I upgraded my insurance (for the same amount as the rental?!) and since I signed paperwork while there, they cannot and will not help me resolve this. This is how they treat their customers. Honestly, I have never felt so taken advantage of by a merchant-- and I travel and shop a LOT. I feel genuinely insulted by it at this point and have filed a dispute through my credit card, will complain to the BBB and will NEVER NEVER NEVER use or recommend Avis again. Car had a used water bottle inside I asked if I could have a different car seemed it wasn't cleaned, rep responded by asking me if she needed to remove the used water bottle, I explained that wasn't the bigger issue. I rent with Enterprise almost on a weekly basis and their check-in process literally takes 1 minute. Each person took at least 10 minutes, I have absolutely no idea why. Everyone in line was livid at how long we had to stand there. The car we rented was fine, although there were some pretty nasty stains on the driver's seat. 5 stars: I left my phone in the rental car upon return. I called and had to be transferred a couple times but the person I talked to handled shipping my phone back with no problems. They offered to ship it via USPS for free but I wanted to get it sooner so I asked for 2-day air. They charged me only for the shipping and even called me with the tracking number and cost to ship it. For that and handling it so professionally and quickly, 5 stars. read more

This location continues to be the worst experience everytime I pick up and drop off at this location. Cars smell like smoke, the workers are lazy and unattentive. I dropped off two days ago and the lot crew decided they were closing down at 8:45pm versus 9:00pm because it was Friday night. I was told to leave the car and they would scan it later and email the receipt, which Avis often does. Still waiting for confirmation they checked in that car. I called and made a reservation for a charger. I wanted this specific car for some fun, I'm tired of the old Toyota rental. The operator said they had a few ready for pick up. I get to the location and they said they didn't have ANY...... obviously I was upset, they found a mustang for me at a discounted rate. Of course I took it, I needed it. Everything was fine up until I returned it with a FULL TANK of gas and they STILL charged me 120 for a refuel..... I caught this 5 minutes after leaving, when I returned it the woman didn't mention ANY kind of extra payment or anything else being charged to my account. Thieves. I called back not even 30 min after getting in the car, I didn't want to miss my flight. She had the nerve to tell me "can you send the the receipt to prove it to me?" .... WHAT??? You mean you didn't even look when I returned it ??? You didn't see that it was full??????
