I rented a car through Expedia and picked up the car at this location at the Cleveland international airport. Everything went smoothly there wasn't a line so we got processed quickly and the lady even gave me an upgrade on the car. What she failed to tell me or to explain to me was the gas situation. In the past I would always just pick up a car it would be full and then I would refill it before I turned it back in. But I guess I purchased a package for $60 where I could use the gas and not refill it. But I did refill it in the end. I called the company and they told me I would have to turn in the receipt and that I would get my money back for the refill. So I was happy about that. So in the future I would make sure that I know what I am buying. But everyone here was pretty friendly at the Cleveland International Airport. What made us laugh is we came all the way to Cleveland OHIO and we get a car with Florida plates.! read more

Hertz is not my usual choice for car rental. Since it was a work trip and my work uses Hertz, I had no choice. You need to take a shuttle from the airport when renting from CLE airport. Check in was horrendous. Monday evening around 7:30 pm, there was only 1 rep working the counter. Every other car rental counter had at least 2 reps at their counter. We waited over 45 mins on the line which is unacceptable and frustrating. We got a 2023 Nissan Sentra with 24K miles on it. The car wasn't cleaned from the previous renter since we found a half bottle of Diet Coke in the back seat. The only positive experience was drop off. Jose did a walk around, confirmed the charges and we were on our way. It was quick and seamless which is how it's supposed to be. read more

Being a business traveler I can never say I'll never use any particular rental car company so after my go to rental car company that I have literally rented hundreds of rentals with again failed me when traveling to Cleveland because of no cars available so I booked through Hertz and believe me the process was a little painful after showing up at the counter after booking my rental online. I immediately missed the "by-pass the counter" guys. The inability to choose my own car after I've had a chance to look at the inventory and making my own choice is really frustrating not to mention I spent 45 minutes at the counter and charged a fee of $486.36 for a beat up 37,468 mile Honda SUV which they considered an upgrade for 2 1/2 days which comes out to about $3.24 a mile plus the fuel cost. I'll definitely look for other options my next trip to Cleveland and I'm not ruling out Uber - I'm a reasonable person so it's not upsetting but it is ridiculous and has convinced me that the travel industry is totally failing. Rented a car from November 1st to the 8th, returned to Cleveland Hopkins Airport, charged for a return to Dallas over $1100. When I returned the car to Cleveland on the 8th. The manager told me she would resolve this over charge and the license plate on the original rental was wrong and just an error and I would be refunded the service fee for the return in Dallas though it could take several weeks and she would email me to my email confirmation of this. Fraudulently charged me $611.08 on a $184.09 rental. Charged me for a missing carseat (not true). Charged me for missing keys (not true). Charged me for tolls (I pre-paid for the EZ pass). Charged me for three extra hours of rental (I returned the car 40 minutes before the deadline). I was still in town so went into the location and have video evidence as well as audio of them CONFIRMING the keys were there, confirming the carseat was there and confirming that the car was returned online. I received confirmation that I would be refunded $427.01 in 5-7 days. That was in June. When I called back in July when I did not receive a refund they told me OHHH IT ACTUALLY TAKES 4-6 WEEKS WOW. They even sent me a $100 credit towards Hertz for my troubles...I would rather have my money back. Now no one will pick up the mgr number they gave me so I filed a complaint with Hertz corporate. THEY TOLD ME THE LOCATION NEVER EVEN FILED FOR A REFUND!!! The complaint was escalated AND they requested a refund but - get this - it's contingent upon the location approving (that's right - the same location that fraudulently charged me in the first place, has been acting in bad faith and never requested a refund in the first place). I had a sneaking suspicion that something shady would happen so I luckily have have audio recording of me going back into this location where it was confirmed BY the people working there that I WOULD receive a refund. I got stuck with a hidden fee at the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport Hertz. I prepaid for a rental. While checking in, the woman verbatim said "will you be adding another driver today?" I looked at my wife and said sure. She then asked for my wife's drivers license, took her information, and then had us sign that we were "authorizing a second driver" AT NO POINT did she say it was an additional $80 charge. After returning the vehicle, I found the charge on my bank statement and contacted Hertz billing department. They basically said oh well. The receipt for the 2nd driver charge was stapled to the back of the receipt showing that I prepaid. It was not visible without removing the staple. Nice little surprise for me. I'm not a member of any kind but I did see a good special on cars for Easter weekend and I wanted something that was better than the last competitive brand I went with which was awful. Hertz was easy to schedule with online and I had no issues when I went to the front desk. I was in and out really quick. The guy was really friendly when choosing my car too. Very, very clean cars! very fuel efficient. When I returned the car I got a bit confused returning it just because of where exactly I should go too because I was following the signs and not the people or if there was Anything I needed to do after returning the vehicle. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!! Our car broke down in northern upstate NY and needed to get home to Cleveland. My husband picked up the rental in Utica, NY at 4:10 pm ET on Thursday. He left Old Forge, NY at 10:45 am today (Friday)and drove straight home, 441 miles. Because of Traffic, rain and construction he brought the car back at 5:50 and the car was supposed to be back at 4. He was late due to the above issues. He had to get home for a funeral. They charged him $441, $60 of that was for late charges. I don't usually rent with Hertz and I was reminded why from my most recent experience. To start off, there was one agent at the counter when we arrived around 11:30a and the other was training and kept having to pull the other agent in with her customer. I had already paid for my reservation and per my confirmation emails, what was left to pay was around $96. I was prepared to pay that and when I pulled my card out to pay, I see $303 come up on the payment screen, I tell the agent that I have already paid and that it should just be $96. She then tells me "oh that amount is for the remaining taxes and airport fees and deposit." No where is my reservation did it state that I would be paying any more than $96 never the less more than my actual reservation, but I had a 2 hour drive ahead of me so I needed the car. I told her let me use a different card and she once again got pulled into another transaction at that moment. I swiped another card and it was still asking for another $300! I then I get informed that because I am using my debit card, it is an additional $500 deposit plus the $300 I already paid! I have rented cars MANY times before and have never been charged more than my actual reservation. I told her I will not be paying that, to cancel and I will go rent elsewhere. She then explains they will be holding my $300 for 3-5 business days!! Apparently this is a new process with them and I was not the only one to have gone thru this madness. I demanded a refund now and thankfully she was able to get that back to me and I went over to ALAMO and I was in and out with a car with NO additional deposits or fees other than giving them my return flight info in less than 10 minutes!!! I am still dealing with hertz's crappy service to get my reservation refunded to me a week later for a car that I was never given keys to. STAY AWAY!!!!! I haven't rented from Hertz in a while and now I know why. After being strong armed into car upgrades, insurance policies and XM radio, which I declined, I was given my contract and told to go to space 125 for my rental car. That location was quite far from the rental counter. When I arrived a the space, there was no car there. I walked back to the counter to let them know. The agent walked me back to the space to verify there was no car there and then looked around for a compact SUV until finding one. This SUV smelled very strong of weed so I let her know. She pointed out the air fresheners that Hertz put in the car and told me to have the attendant at the gate change my contract to reflect I have a different vehicle. No offer to try and locate another vehicle that wasn't saturated in weed. This vehicle was in poor condition. I drove with the windows down to try and get the weed smell out so I didn't smell like it when I visited my family. That didn't work. The windows on the inside were all filthy and the wiper blades were so worn out they just smeared rain against the window. This vehicle should have been removed from service when they put in air fresheners and put it back out on the lot and I was the "lucky" person to rent it. I won't be renting from Hertz again. I suggest you do better with customer service and the condition of your cars and a little less pressure trying to upsell people on more expensive vehicles, insurance policies and Sirius XM, especially when the car already had it for free. read more

So if I wanted a larger car I had to pay an extra $45/day for this. Then they gave me a car that was broken. It pays to be a Gold Member for Hertz. I got this promotion through my company as I booked my car online and got a full size for $200 for the week rental which is not too bad at all with taxes. The cons is that you do need to take a shuttle to get to the rental place and wait times will increase due to the pandemic that is happening right now We got confused on that to do, but I should have read the e-mail in more detail as they said just got to the lot and pick your car from these stalls. You can tell that Covid-19 has major impact as there was only 2 cars to choose from a Chevrolet Malibu which was alright, but inside was clean and outside as well. The keys were inside and we took off. We went to the station and the attendant was there and does take awhile to do the checks so we were there for 15 minutes waiting 3 people ahead of us. When you do return the car, it is a drop off and take your luggage. I am used to having people there as that was a confusing part. The agent noticed a small chip on the windshield but she told him it was dark and the car was covered with frost when she picked it up - How could she have seen it? The agent then asked her to sign a damage report after telling her she was NOT responsible for the chip. You can guess what happened next. Windshield repair accepted - $50. This could be an example of "buyer beware" but being directly lied to is just not right. Let me start by saying that we had Lala as our customer service rep and she was absolutely amazing. She was kind, understanding, and honest. Give that woman a gold star. As for Hertz itself I'm extremely disappointed. We booked this rental flying into Cleveland from Tampa. We prepaid $311 to reserve a car wth our debit card. There was a confirmation email saying the only items we needed to bring was our ID and the debit card we used to purchase the reservation. After our flight at 5 am and getting to Hertz, Lala informed us that since we used a debit card we will have to have a hard credit pull and a $500 deposit on the debit card. First of all we were never informed that this would be a requirement to get the car even though we have already prepaid. If we used a credit card there would be a $200 deposit and no credit check. Unfortunately we did not have enough funds on our credit card at the time-because we weren't told this would be a requirement-again. So Lala was extremely patient and waited while I had a slight breakdown. Got the funds for the deposit. My partners credit check was denied-they tried mine and it went through-unfortunately I am under 25 so I had to fork another $145 for an under 25 fee. All in all-we will never book with Hertz again. If they had said in our confirmation email that we needed to have a deposit I wouldn't have needed to write this review. This company is deceptive and manipulative. I picked up a car from Cleveland Hopkins airport on 11/18/2024. Quickly, I saw that the check engine light had come on. Soon after that, I noticed that the car would "jump" when shifting and it got to the point that on the night of December 10th, the car would not get up to speed on the highway, topping out at 40ish mph. On 12/11 I called Hertz and over the course of FOUR days, was told that my options were that I could A) go to the closest Hertz location and end up paying out of pocket for the only available car which was a higher class than I had received. B) DRIVE THE MALFUNCTIONING CAR AN HOUR TO THE ORIGINAL PICKUP LOCATION C) HAVE THE CAR TOWED AND RIDE WITH THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER AN HOUR, C) have a Lyft ordered to take me to the original pickup location, or D) GET A VOUCHER FOR ME TO TAKE THE RENTAL CAR INTO A GARAGE TO GET IT FIXED. I am absolutely APPALLED at the service, or lack thereof, that I received. I am in Ohio on business and simply do not have time to waste half of a day driving an hour back and forth to the original pickup location plus going through whatever the exchange process would be. Nor should I have been asked to do so! I rented a car for convenience, not to waste hours on end fixing the situation myself when it wasn't my issue in the beginning. The company should have simply paid the independent location the difference of the cost of the new car I was given. End of story. I wasn't even assured that I would be reimbursed retroactively for the difference in price. I was just told that I could ask at the original pickup location when I dropped the car off to see if they would reimburse me. Are you kidding me?? This was such an easy solution! How was it not handled in an appropriate way?? The hours shown here (5 am to 2 am), which are the same hours stated in the recorded telephone greeting, ARE NOT CORRECT. This location is only open 7 am to 10 pm. (This doesn't make sense to me because flights depart and arrive at all hours of the day and night. I understand if not EVERY location is open 24 hours but one at an airport should be IMHO.) Anyway, I got conflicting information from several sources so I tried to call before making a reservation; you CANNOT talk directly to anyone at the location. And the corporate customer service people didn't have a clue. What made it even more confusing was that you can select pickup/dropoff times online (at 30 minute increments) from 0:00 to 23:30... That is very misleading because the location is not open 24 hours. After reading reviews on Yelp stating that Hertz is the only car rental company that's open late at this airport I decided to go for it. Our flight landed just before 11pm... The car rental lot is miles away from the airport... The shuttles were not running so we had to call a Lyft. When we got there THEY WERE CLOSED. Our Lyft had left and we had no car. Needless to say I was not happy BUT an employee inside saw me pacing outside and opened back up so we could get a car. Thank you employee!! (I did tell him about the advertised hours and he said "oh that's an old recording." SMH.) The car itself was fine... A late model Toyota Corolla. It was clean, had Bluetooth and USB charger ports and got great gas mileage. The dropoff was a little better. Although Hertz was (again) closed when we arrived, they do let you leave the car in the lot and there is a key dropbox inside. The signage outside is poor so you just have to go in and look for it. The shuttles WERE running at 5 am. We had no issues with the bill, it was pretty close to what we were quoted. The cost ($250/week w/unlimited miles) and the fact that it was a nice car earns them a couple of stars. Hope this helps! read more

Hertz is the absolutely worst rental company. They have horrible customer service and they do not give you any deals they tell you they will. We had our first bad experience in New Orleans. The rental store closed before our pickup time. We then had to go to the air port and pay triple the amount for our rental. From that we got a measly $75 certificate. Fast forward to us renting in Florida, we try to use the certificate after calling customer service to ensure we could use it at the location. Surprise, big nope, they won't let us use it(although the people at that location were extremely nice in person and reissued our certificate because it would have expired) So a long phone call later and we have some points to go along with our rental. Try to use them online, won't work. So again stuck with the horrible customer service and I make my booking using points. Except the guy I talked to didn't actually make the reservation after repeatedly telling me he did and we'd be receiving an email confirmation. So I call again. They claim to listen to the recording and call me a liar that he didn't tell me the price he said. I wrote every single price of the call down from initial, to new, to after discounts to after taxes and fees. To Whom It May Concern: Don't use Hertz in Cleveland, OH. We rented a Hertz vehicle through Hotwire to be picked up at the Cleveland, OH airport on July 3, 2023. Our Frontier flight 2454 from DFW to CLE had a delayed departure time from 5:12 pm to 8:00 pm. We arrived in Cleveland and immediately caught the shuttle to pick up our rental car from Hertz. We arrived at the rental car center sometime between 10:45pm and 11:15pm. The Hertz counter was closed. The lights were off, it was shut down and no one was there. The agent at the Thrifty counter next to Hertz told us they had closed and left. We went out to the Hertz lot to see if someone was still out there but could not find anyone. We stayed at the rental car center until 1:35 am trying to figure out our next move. We called Hertz. They told us nothing could be done since the counter was closed and they could not authorize a refund of our money as we had booked through Hotwire. Hotwire told us that Hertz would have to refund our money since it was paid to them. We checked with other rental places in the rental car center that were open and they could rent us a car for approximately $500, but we were unwilling to risk losing our money we had already paid. We had booked a hotel approximately 25 minutes toward Pittsburgh, PA, as that was our destination. We could not cancel that at that late date. We decided to Uber to the hotel, but were unable to get an Uber from the rental car center, so we took the shuttle back to the airport and got an Uber from there with a hotel arrival of 2:15 am. That costs us $43.11. Our return trip to the rental car center the next morning costs us $38.93 for a total of $82.04. When we returned to the Hertz counter the next morning 2 people were working and a manager was on duty. We explained the situation and could not believe it when they told us that someone was at the Hertz counter the night before until midnight and that they always wait until the last plane comes in, even if it is late. Talk about adding insult to injury with that lie! If that were true, why on earth would we have not picked up our rental car then, instead of incurring the cost of an Uber and the extra aggravation and time/sleep lost on the 1st day of our vacation? Plus, we had stayed there for 2 & 1/2 hours hoping for a resolution. Here is the bottom line: Regardless of who the booking was through, Hertz had a simple customer service duty to perform of having someone at the rental counter to rent us our car as we were there during the hours they were supposed to be open, especially if they truly do wait until the last plane comes in. Hertz did not perform that duty. When we followed up on it Hertz said the Cleveland Hertz people were there until midnight which was not true.
