I am giving it 1 star because 0 is not an option. The Avis at Fair Oaks Mall called me on the way to pick up a vehicle I booked 2 weeks ago to say they had no vehicles. They sent me to customer service, which transferred me twice, no joy, and meanwhile the last person told me the manager at the Fair Oaks location had canceled my reservation. He had told me he was going to call when a car became available. This process took about 2 extremely frustrating hours. I am booking with Enterprise. Stay away from Avis; they are awful. On the other hand, the Enterprise on Nutley Street in Fairfax, VA, completely rocks and found me a vehicle I could pick up immediately. Moral of the story: Avoid Avis. Embrace Enterprise. Edit: Looking at the ton of 1 star reviews and just a handful of 2 and 3s, I'm wondering if the math here is wonky, as it shows up as 2-plus stars. Weird. read more

Poor customer service I had a very disappointing experience at Avis. The employee asked me to go get my credit card, but when I returned a few minutes later, he told me there were no cars available. He was also very rude and unprofessional throughout the interaction. I understand that availability can change, but the way I was treated was unacceptable. Don't rent from this Avis/Budget location at Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax, particularly. I received a great price on a rental car for this location on Expedia. On day of rental, they did not have the car type I reserved and blew me off. I believe they didn't want to honor the price I received. The manager was rude and told me to call customer service. Once I called there, they moved my reservation to another location but it was $300. more. That person said in order to honor my original price, they'd have to transfer me to management. That person said I would have to pay the increased price first and they would reimburse me later. Are you kidding me, do you think after this experience I would trust them to give me a reimbursement?? Don't use Avis or Budget, owned by Avis! I had problems with Avis at the Tampa, Fl airport. They don't handle the reservations correctly (you really don't have a reservation when you think you do) and their customer service is rude and unprofessional. They don't treat customers well. Really disappointed in Avis. This is a car rental company that can't produce a car that was reserved and confirmed a week prior to rental. I needed a large SUV and rented a Suburban (or equivalent) a week prior for pick up at 9a so we can head out of town for a time sensitive event. The agent was extremely rude and harassed us about the car being dirty when it wasn't. When we asked for his name, he got in the car and sped off. I later noticed we were charged a $155 cleaning fee and an additional $100. I would like to say that this is unique to this location, but Avis has some serious management and customer service issues as a whole. Give your business to someone else! read more

I made a reservation days in advance to pick up an Avis vehicle at this location. I had a confirmation number from Avis and everything. Then when I got there at the specified time on a Sunday, there was no cars available. The manager could not say precisely when one might be available or what that vehicle might be, if it turned up. The fact that I had a confirmation number from Avis did not matter to him. Nor did he offer to help me resolve the problem. Nor was he particularly polite. The whole attitude seemed to be that it was not his problem. He told me to wait until a car was turned in. I called Avis customer service and had to travel to another Avis location 13 miles away in Tyson's Corner to get a car. If you have to rent from Avis, I would pick another, more established location. This place does not even have a storefront; it is just a display in the middle of a corridor in a mall. Or better yet, pick a different rental car company like National or Hertz. Been here twice. Sister company of Budget. I usually book everything online and then just come in pay and drive off. Good customer service and super fast. Will take care of your needs. Prices are reasonable and you can always find coupon codes online. Only thing I don't like is that they don't have the newer and nicer cars like Enterprise. read more

This location was a life saver today!!! My boyfriend had just dropped off one car at another rental place in the area, but then I was having major issues with the hotel we were staying in all the way in MD (10 weeks pregnant and freaking out a little bit about having to move all 7 large pieces of our luggage and deal with the issue at the hotel on top of that). So we needed another car, fast. The other rental places were sold out. Not only did they make sure they got us a car, they upgraded our rental without the extra charge. It made the ordeal we were experiencing so much easier. The staff was friendly, understanding, patient and helpful. The car actually seems to run better than other companies we've used, but it could also be that it's a slightly newer car than we usually get. read more

The owner of this location is wonderful! He is nice, attentive, quick with confirming the rental in person, and follows covid-protocols (and made me feel very safe about the car being sanitized). I rented a car easily online, and once I got to the location, the whole process took me ten minutes from looking up my rental to driving away. Great location, great owner, great service. read more

Been here twice. Once as a walk in and once with an already completed reservation, just needed to pick up my car. This location is terrible when it comes to customer service. When i came when i already had a reservation it took the representatives 30 mins just to get me the agreements and car when no one else was there. The second attempt was by a long shot because I need to get my car fixed and my body shop is close. I went there as a walk in and I was the first in line. the computer system went done 4 times and they could not enter my Avis wizard number, apply my coupon, or anything. The representative could barley get me my reservation. I had a gentleman behind me who just needed to pick up his car, hoping it would be easy i let him go ahead of me, but no it took them over 30 mins to get him going like it did before me. I then needed to extended my reservation so i called the 1-800 number the corporate office and they could not find my reservation and siad ma'am you dont have a reservation!. That gentleman made me upset because i am like i have the receipt in front of me. So I then proceeded to call the Fair oaks office and I talked to the manager Micheal he acted as if it was my fault that all this occurred. He in addition was very rude and kept cutting me off when i was trying to explain my problems to him and what i needed to be done. This Avis is located at the Fair Oaks Mall inside Sears. So don't be confused when you see the address. They have very few vehicles, but they were able to accomodate me last minute (which I was very appreciative of). There is only one employee who is there at a time and he was nice. The car was clean and in good condition. The rates were decent (I had trouble renting b/c of the over 25 yrs old rule) But I got a good rate for having to pay the under age fee. read more

This was the worst Avis location I've ever been to. I arrived to pick up my car and the owner, Habtom Kidane, started the conversation by accusing me of not doing my reservation correctly (I had called him on Sunday to update the reservation, so he had entered my information into his own system). When I told him that, he became incredibly rude and started yelling at me. After a couple minutes of trying to move the process forward and get my car, I just gave up and told him I was going to report him to my company. He responded with "Go ahead, I don't care!", sat down at his kiosk desk and continued to berate me. I finally just walked away, without completing the reservation. wow amazing place. it just eat up your money . I made a reservation online and they were not ready when I went there to pick up the car. And even their card machine did not work properly and they just blame me for did not bring any extra card to use. They ended up making me cancel the reservation which ruined my entire vacation plan. Also I need to pay the cancellation fee even though it was not my fault. plus their service was horrible. They did not allow me to say a single word. I'm only giving this place one star because it doesn't give me the option to give them zero stars. This is by far the worst and rudest Avis I've ever been to. They is always only one person and they're incredibly nasty. In fact we were locked out of sears until they felt it was time to come let us in. Why open your store eight when the mall doesn't open till 10 but then keep your doors locked? We showed up at 8:30 to pick up a 9 o'clock reservation and we were turned down because we were told we were too early. It was literally 8:29 and we were told that there were six other 8 o'clock reservations that had to be taken care of before us. We were the only people in line!!! My husband and I both had to work at 9 o'clock so we told them we would have to come back later. However when we returned after we both got off work, we found out that the gentleman canceled our reservation completely and gave so they could rent our car to somebody else. My husband was absolutely livid when the gentleman behind the counter was not only rude but was completely insensitive of our situation and need to get to the airport. I came to pickup my rental car, they decided to give me the worst possible car available saying that you picked a full size Chevy impala 2015 or similar. Similar is where they play you. Their customer service is the worst I couldn't believe that they told me that I have been mislead by their website lol. Needed a rental for a week long work trip. Car was ready on time and service was quick in spite of it being a one person operation. Received the free upgrade because the website rented me a car there that they didn't have. Staff provided an umbrella when inspecting the care since it had started to rain when I arrived. Would typically only give 4 stars, but gets an extra because I realized I had left a unique charger in the car nearly a week later, and when I went back, the manager had found it during cleaning and held on to it for me. read more

AVOID at all costs! Avis' website claims to be "...in the business of treating people like people." If that's true, then Avis believes that people are suckers. My family received a van that was not cleaned. I'm not a clean freak, but what we were given was unacceptable. The back of the van was disgusting: it had numerous half-chewed candy pieces, hairs, food wrappers, glitter, sequins, and other general dirt and grime. The back of the front seats had food wrappers. The manager was unsympathetic. Our only option was to trade in for a van which also wasn't clean (but was not as dirty). He would not give us a discount even though our time was wasted and even though we were given a dirty van-- twice. We paid good money for a clean vehicle. We were not given a clean vehicle. Avis made a mistake but did not fix it. Go to the Fair Oaks Avis if you want bad service, high prices, and dirty vehicles. I was hoping that by e-mailing the greater Avis company, they would be exonerated from their misdeeds. However, I did not receive a reply from them. So, the specific Avis we went to is irresponsible and unprofessional, as is the whole company. I will stick with Enterprise from now on. Enterprise has always surpassed my low standards. I have rented from this location a few times over the years and it is always the same. Very good service when someone is behind the counter. The trick is --- someone has to be behind the counter. Otherwise, you are out of luck. Just stood there for 20 minutes and called national Avis to cancel reservation. It's the second time in two rentals in the past two weeks. First on a return.... second, on a reservation that I just cancelled. C'mon guys, get a phone line link to a cell phone. I understand it's a small shop and you have to do everything yourself (wash cars, etc), but not being able to know when customers are around lets business walk out he door. read more

This location is completely understaffed and the gentleman that was there was very rude. It took me 30 minutes to rent a car and over 45 minutes to return a car. Next time, I'll go to the airport, even though this is much closer to me. Overall the time will take less, and because they charged me for a second driver, it will be cheaper too. This place is terrible, and it has nothing to do with the mall changes that are happening. The systems are antiquated and the help rude, slow, and generally awful to be around.
