Disgraceful experience at Avis JFK. They gave me a car with 11,065 miles on the odometer while the contract said 7,014. My rate charges $0.32/mile, so this could have meant 4,000+ miles of bogus charges if I hadn't caught it. The contract also said the tank was full when it was actually only half full. When I questioned why the price didn't match my reservation, one front-desk employee was dismissive and acted like he couldn't care less. Another senior employee was actually helpful, so credit to him. Then I was told someone would come help with the fuel. Nobody came. I had to find the employee myself, only to be greeted with: "Do you know how long I was waiting for you?" What a joke. Wrong mileage, wrong fuel level, confusing charges, and terrible service. It took 45 min to wash the car then the car was brought to us soaking wet . This delay led us to be late for an even we were suppose to get in . First, this is not a knock on Budget as a whole. I am a Fastbreak member since I've rented from them a number of times. I even rented a car from Budget/JFK once before with no incident. I reserved an SUV months in advance during the holiday break knowing it would be difficult to rent a car during this time. As a Fastbreak member, via the app, it said specifically, that I could go to a certain section, pick a car and drive off. There was even a sign w/ my name saying my rental was ready. After walking in the freezing cold to the section, I was told I still had to go to the front desk to check in. After checking in, I was told they were still "cleaning my rental". We waited for approximately 45 minutes (this is after walking around, so approx an hour wait), we got the car. After driving off into JFK traffic, that's when we realized the smell. (For those who saw it, think of the "Smelly Car" episode of Seinfeld) The car smelled like an old stale ashtray. As the car heated up more, the stench intensified. We tried using cologne/perfume to cover the stench and checked the ashtrays. We wiped down what appeared to be ash from the console and cup holders. Not sure what they cleaned. At best it looked like they just hosed down the outside of the car and filled the tank and completely skipped the interior. And unfortunately, because of the holiday season, other Budget locations did not have extra suvs to swap out. One other thing, what's the point of providing a "local" number for a Budget location if no one picks up and it just goes to the central line, where the customer service rep can't do anything except to say "Did you try calling a location directly?" read more

I rented a car via Priceline as a bundle with airfare . generally I try to get Hertz but this time They were just to much. I choose an SUV with Avis, The car was fine no problems at all. The customer service was not the best at all. I got to JFK airport and went to the rental cars and to Avis. The line was not bad but the agents were super slow and did not seem to want to be there at all. I would say overall terrible customer service. When I returned the car it should of been easy peezy and it was not. I waited for about 15 minutes before any attendant even bothered to come over and tell me just leave keys in car and you can go. They did not look at car while I was there and did not even acknowledge the return of the car. I will try in the future to stay with Hertz if I can. I will however use Avis in the future if I have to as there is not much of a selection when you fly into JFK . read more

This location is not smoke free. Half of the cars i recieve stink of marijuana. The higher the mileage the better chance yiu are to receive. They also charge a fuel charge when you bring back the vehicle and say its due you driving to location. I was charged a pet fee when i had pics the vehicle had hair upon pickup and told the agent at gate. Stay far away from this place!!! We had planned to rent a car for our trip to Long Island the week before Christmas. Our flight was delayed so we were very tired and knew we had an hour ride ahead of us once we got our car. The line was about 12 people deep at 1230a. The "Preferred" line was actually just for Budget customers but there was no sign and it was only said once or twice in the lowest voice possible. So there was a lot of confusion for who gets to go next. There were 1.5 people working at that hour. I say ".5" bc the one guy had no clue what he was doing and the poor woman working with him had to stop what she was doing every 5 secs to help him. As soon as we got in line, we heard multiple people say they had been there for over 90 min!!! Insane. Every customer who went up and got their car came back within 5-10 minutes!! Either there were no keys, the car wasnt what they rented or the car wasnt actually a rentable car at all. It was a real shitshow there. Standing and waiting around as its taking about 15 min per person, then doing the math of how many people were in front of us--it did not look good. So we wound up just leaving and getting a very expensive uber. Thankfully we were able to call the next day and get a full refund but it did not make up for the awful service and headache it gave us at 1230a at night. the woman working there knew what she was doing and i sympathize that it was just a hot mess of a night but there shouldve been more staff and/or more competent help outside when people went to get their cars. would never rent from them again, ever. read more

I needed a rental car one way from Boston to NYC after my flight got cancelled twice! And I needed to get home for work. I booked the car online, Avis was the only one available with a one way option. With taxes and fees about $200 but it was better than sitting and waiting around when the drive was about 3.5 hours. Waited over two hours in line to get the rental car we had pre booked ahead of time. We then waited another 40 min for the car to be turned over and cleaned etc. We had our toddler with us so the entire experience was painful and unnecessary. The line wasn't even that long, the people working were not efficient and they didn't have cars available to give people. They were waiting on returns. The people behind the counter even got into a fight with each other and one of them walked out of the building with her bag midway through helping a customer. We complained at the front and were told "this is how it is every day." Rent with literally anyone else. read more

Dropped off a rental from Boston and and Avis employee sat in the car, started it and turned to us and said " you are good to go" my fiancé and I looked at each other and said " what about a receipt " he said we will email it, you are good to go". I felt like this guy wanted us to leave. Turns out , he saw my cell phone sitting in the blue tooth charger and wanted us out of there so he could snatch that 1500 dollar phone. We walked away about 500 feet and realized I forgot it and ran back and mind you he was the only person by the car, no other employees or customers. He was now gone and came sauntering back when i was at the car. I told the AVIS EMPLOYEE THAT MY PHONE WAS RIGHT HERE CHARGING AND NOW IT IS GONE. HE SAID " I didnt take it", I said " I never said you did, but you were the only one at the car and no one else is even around the car". This place is a joke, I read the reviews and it is just a cess pool of people who dont give a !&*@!! - Employees treating customers like crap and yelling at them for their mistakes - now escalated to stealing from customers - Next stage is an assault . We rented the "mystery car" which turned out to be a Chevy bolt. We were driving it to PHL. The agent said it 'might get 150 miles (which is about how far it is from JFK to PHL) but we could upgrade to a gas car for 50$ more and it might take all day to recharge it. We took our chances. Absolutely horrible. I Rental frequently from JFK location. The past three times, I had to wait at least 40 mins for my reserved car. The app is supposed to send location #, so you can locate and go. This never happens. I am a "Preferred" customer. I'm not being snobby, but what does Preferred mean? So incredibly inefficient. After a long plane ride from LA to JFK I did not anticipate this wait. Try to avoid using Avis if you are arriving after midnight unless you have a couple extra hours to spare. Update: now waiting almost 2 hours and no benches or chairs for family while youre waiting. Now Avis is saying I agreed to the CDW (of which I did not) and will no honor a dispute. Keep in mind Jamaica is a 3rd world country and will work to scam you at every turn and chance they get. I rented a car from Avis @ JFK for a three night trip to Pennsylvania. I got dropped off at the car rental about an hour early for my pick up time. There were about eight people in line when I got there so I decided to get in line and just let them know I was there a bit early. There were two workers at the site then. It took nearly 50 minutes for me to get to the counter and by that time there was a line of nearly 20 people behind me. No longer thinking I was there early I did not say anything to the attendant. What I did say was "Wow, you are getting slammed right now" which I meant to sympathize with how upset people were getting in the line. His response was (with a smile) "It's a great day for Avis"! ?? I truly took this as a comment of Avis raking in profits and with no sympathy for long waits by the customer (maybe I missed some East Coast sarcasm but I don't believe I did). He did say I was lucky and my car was ready. Sadly, I was given the wrong car (a huge SUV instead of an economy sedan). It took a worker on the lot another 45 minutes to get me a different car (still not the one I reserved but close enough) along with a new agreement from the desk. The car was excellent and the drop off went well. Once home, I realized Avis had charged me an extra day for what I assume was due to getting to the counter 10 minutes earlier than my arranged time (I had dropped off the car with time to spare)! How this happened when I didn't actually get my car to nearly one hour after my assigned time is unbelievable! I did get $84 of the extra $88 back though (why minus $4 I have no clue) after speaking to customer service on the phone for about a half hour. I have used Avis in the past with much better results. Pretty sure I will stay away from them in the future! read more
