Came in from a six hour flight to grab our car we had reserved, unfortunately the key for the vehicle couldn't be found, DJ and Gessel showed us a different option, although the car was a larger size it didn't have the necessary 8 seats we needed to accommodate our trip. What I appreciated the most was that instead of just forcing us into the 7 seater, they looked at options for us, when that did not work out they went above and beyond to look for the key which was eventually located. This may not seem like a lot but trust me after a six hour flight and traveling with two kids, it's a relief to be able to drive off with what was reserved. A seven seater car would have resulted in us needing another car just to get around for the next few weeks which would have been a logistical nightmare. DO NOT RENT FROM HERE The app allowed me to pick my specific vehicle, however when I arrived they tried to give me something else. I pointed this out to them and they tried to make an excuse about it, making me feel weird & small in the process, but they ended up giving me the car I picked. It was after 11pm. They handed me the keys and my receipt. There was no walk around the vehicle. The parking lot is dimly lit. I looked at the car which appeared fine and I drove off. When I returned the car the agent pointed out a scratch. I explained that must've already been there. I drove upstate for the weekend, I was not around any people. I was isolated in a country house. She asked if I took pics when I got the car. I told her no. She shook her head and told me I should always take pics before leaving with the car. She told me not to worry about it and just explain that the scratch was there before if I'm contacted about it. Less than two weeks later I get a damage claim, $939.04 for that scratch. The photo of the scratch Sixt sent to me was deeper than the scratch the agent showed me. But it was my word against theirs, and I had no proof that the scratch wasn't already there. But neither did Sixt. Thankfully my AMEX car insurance coverage took care if it. The most appalling unprofessional experience. This location has got to be running an insurance claim scam, and there must be incentives to filing insurance claims. For over 25 years I've rented cars from various companies locally, nationally, and internationally, never charged a claim until Sixt JFK. I will definitely stick with Hertz, Enterprise, or Budget in the future. read more

This is an absolute "stay away" experience. Started with checking in - the agent acted more like a sales person, trying to sell their insurance to us despite the clear "I do not need it" answer. It was kind of comical experience listening to him telling me how dangerous driving and parking the car on a street is in NYC. The fact that I lived there for 27 years obviously did not bother him. However, extra 10 min at registration is not a turn-off, it's just an extra inconvenience. When we returned the ca we were charged extra $200 for not cleaning the car. To say that I was taken aback is to say nothing. I must've rented cars all over the country at least 50+ times. Never was I charged a penalty for not cleaning the car. The funny thing is that we did clean it, but apparently there was a small amount of send in the trunk. The company never replied to the email we send. This is a shame. read more

I wish I had the gentleman's name... On August 13 (I guess August 14 since after midnight) My husband and I just landed in NY after a very long travel day from Ca. I was wearing an "anti nausea" patch because I get air sick. When we walked into the rental car place, our cell phones were dead and my patch was much too high of a dose for me and I had been wearing it too long and it was "kicking in" when I arrived at this store. The guy working was trying to go home. He had no cars to rent. But he stayed on his own time to give me 10 minutes to charge my phone. At this point I am confused and I probably looked like I was on drugs lol He was still polite. I charged my phone and we said goodnight. I ordered an uber and started hallucinating next! It was a crazy night! I just wanted to say thank you to the kind gentleman who stayed and let me charge my phone. Thank you to his mom for raising a gentleman too. I must disagree with many of the bad reviews of sixt rent a car as my experience of renting a car for my cuz for a week with pick up and return at Kennedy airport was simple and quick with decent rates especially as I was the one paying . Made the online reservation, went to the sixt rent a car at Kennedy airport with my cuz who arrived from France and after showing the proper ID , etc, The car was ready just a few steps from the entrance and the gal who helped us was a gem . 4.5 stars on my yelp meter and cuz is doing the tourist thing with wheels . read more

This company is not only grossly incompetent, but also dangerously irresponsible and financially predatory. Recently, my credit score plummeted by 129 points after Sixt sent a bogus $1829.75 charge to collections, and without any legitimate justification. I found out about this through alerts from AMEX and Chase, not from Sixt. This is the kind of shady, underhanded behavior you'd expect from a scam operation, not an international car rental company. Let's talk about the situation that led to this outrageous charge. I rented a BMW X5 from Sixt at JFK Airport and drove to Montauk, New York. During my stay, the brakes catastrophically failed--not a soft pedal or a warning light, but complete brake failure. I nearly blew through a stop sign, barely managing to stop the car after a terrifying coast. The brakes would work intermittently at best, failing repeatedly. I immediately contacted Sixt's so-called "roadside assistance," expecting some level of professionalism and urgency. Instead, I was told--seriously--to drive the vehicle 100 miles back to JFK Airport with non-functioning brakes. That's right: Sixt wanted me to risk my life (and the lives of everyone else on the road) to return their dangerously defective car. I refused, obviously, and demanded a safe solution. Eventually, they agreed to send a flatbed truck to retrieve the vehicle. Fast forward a few weeks and Sixt hits me with a $1829.75 charge--for the car pickup they arranged*, after supplying a defective vehicle that could have killed someone. According to their own website, towing costs due to mechanical failure are supposed to be covered. They didn't just violate their policy--they violated basic human decency. This is the WORST RENTAL CAR COMPANY I've ever experienced. I would give them zero stars in possible. I paid and reserved a car for this JFK location and when I went to check in they would not rent me a car with my 100% legal drivers license. I had the temporary paper license that the DMV gives you when you get a new license, as well as a picture of the original which I lost. They said they wouldn't rent to me unless I had my original physically in my possession. I had a 5 hour drive to get to my destination and they just told me there is nothing they can do and no exception to their ridiculous rule. Then dude pulls the key to a car off what looks like a giant janitor's key ring. The vehicle had a TON of service issues. Like, a LOT! Then the invoice comes. Holy crap! How TF does $60 a day turn into $120 a day? When I tried to decipher the invoice, everything was in code. This experience, all of it, happened in Philly and again at JFK. Have rented from SIXT Before with no issues. However, my first time at the JFK airport location 2/9- changed that. Do NOT trust anything they say about "Upgrades". I rented a Sedan ... when I arrived they did not have any so I was told they would just give me a free upgrade because they did not have my car class available .... seemed logical to me and didnt think anything of it. I get the final bill and they charged me $50 for it for 1 day! I contact customer service and they tell me .."Nothing we can do .. you signed the contract" . To which I said ... They wouldnt give me the damn keys without the contract and I stated several times that I didnt want the upgrade. Their response ..."Your fault .. you should have read the contract better". So .. lesson learned ... if you dont agree with their upsell at the counter tactics ... they chartge you anyway. As if there are no other Car Rental copmpanies to choose from. read more

I deny the claim and request proof. They ignore my request for proof and send me a bill for the claimed damage. 6 months after I rented a car from Sixt (that was given to me with previous tire damage), they are still sending me a bill for over $600.00 for the tow truck. I have talked, texted and emailed all the info and photos of the old tire damage to claims. This was their fault. The mechanic I took it to said it was too dangerous to drive so it had to be towed. I refuse to pay for Sixt sending me out in a car that would never have passed a safety inspection. I reviewed earlier on Yelp and automatic reply to 'contact them to fix the issue.' Don't. SIXT is not a good car rental company. We travel regularly and in particular to JFK often. Enterprise is our go-to: great inventory, prices and customer service. I tried SIXT because it advertised a reduce rate during a recent trip. Check in was bad. The SIXT team was standing around, no one addressed me as I approached to the empty counter. The clerk, who was friendly, in formed me that my model vehicle was not available and then proceeds to up sell me for over 20 minutes. I would have canceled the reservation and walked over to a competitor but SIXT's cancellation policy is unbending. I ended up paying being unchanged to the extent that the "deal" they advertised was moot. Pick up was bad. Unlike its competitors, SIXT hads you a set of keys and lets you know what spot number the vehicle is in. No one escorts you to the exit or outside. Of course, in my case, the spot number was wrong. So we had to press the key fob over and over until we found out vehicle. Also, because staff did not escort us to the vehicle, we had to be take pictures to preserve a record of the condition of the car because SIXT likes to upsell. I am sure they would be happy to add to the invoice at the end of the rental agreement. The vehicle was in good shape and clean. Unfortunately that does not set SIXT above its market competitors. The return was bad. The lot is not clearly marked and again, no staff greeted us. We parked the vehicle and stood around until a staff member rolled up in a vehicle, rolled down the passenger window and said told us to just drop the keys in our vehicle and head out. No verification of return, fuel levels, nothing. As one would expect, when got back to LA I received an email from SIXT that according to their records I failed to return the vehicle and that I needed to extend my contract. (I had dropped off the vehicle earlier than my reservation required). I had to call SIXT customer service line to be sure that they corrected their records and would not charge me even more money. Bottom line: car rental services are well done by so many brands it has been decades since I had even a so-so experience. It was a shocking how far off the mark SIXT was from industry standards of value and convenience. read more
