Not the best car rental experience. Reserved in advance under one name and it was such a hassle to change the name. Finally finished checking in and the garage pickup was a disorganized mess, too. A younger employee brought the car around for us and pulled it all the way into a dead end lane, which was tricky to get out of in a new car that was completely unfamiliar to us. It's also a little suspicious that the cars get picked up in a poorly lit garage, where it's harder to assess damage before you leave and can be liable for missed dents, etc. later. In any case, we were finally on our way. On our fourth day of a five day reservation, we got a flat. My husband was able to change to the spare but when calling the Avis hotline for info, they were next to useless at what should be a fairly routine situation to resolve. We got passed around to like five different people and had to start all the way over with our contact info and explanation each time, only to eventually be told to drive an hour back to the shop to switch out for a new vehicle. Not sure if options were limited because this happened on a Sunday or what but two hours later, our day was back on track. The second vehicle smelled like weed and there wasn't really a way to document that so we'll just have to see if anything happens with that. read more

My husband and I have been long time Avis/Budget customers and will no longer be supporting them. We rented from this location in May as we do every year visiting family. Our flight was delayed and Avis assured us they would stay open for our arrival. Upon arriving, they were closed and we were forced to rent from another agency. Because we prepaid for the Avis rental we returned the car and picked up from Avis the next morning. Upon pick up my husband took a video of the car and its existing damage (mirror was taped on). At the end of our trip the car was returned and inspected. This week (two months later) we received a letter stating the car was damaged and we'd be charged over $600. My husband called customer service to explain the situation and the representative quickly closed the case based on photos in the file, Avis stated the passenger door was damaged, not the mirror. This location is always a poor performer, but the latest rental experience was my worst ever. I am preferred, I made a reservation months ago and when I got to the preferred area, my name was not on the board. Indicator one. Next, after five minutes waiting, I spoke to the attendant and they said that they hadn't got around to putting the names on the board. Then come to find out, we didn't have a car assigned at all! I was told, well we don't have what you reserved, but you can get a Pick up truck or a van! And that was all that they had. We picked the van and waited twenty minutes for them to bring out a dirty van with 40,000 miles on it. The front end shakes when you drive over 40 miles an hour. This place has always been the worst AVIS location across the country. (I have rented over 100 times from AVIS across the country, so I have a pretty good level of experience at dozens of airports.) I would never recommend renting a car at this location, ever! read more

A terrible place to rent a car, so never again for me. I rented a Prius at a very good price, around $550, and I returned the car in the same condition with perhaps a little dust and dirt (it rained the entire 8-day period I had the car). A week after I returned it, they sent me a $450 bill for a "cleaning fee" and then another bill for $119 dent damage, which I never saw (and I checked before returning it.). The bill for the dent came with a link to see the photos, but the link is dead, a 404 Error message, so I can't even see that. All-in-all, it cost me over $1100 for the rental. I've never rented from Avis before and I will never rent from them again. Avoid them, completely!! I'm going back to Hertz. read more

I am an AVIS Preferred customer and prepaid for a luxury vehicle. When I went to the rental car area, my name was not posted. I then went to the rental booth for help. The individual looked up my information and stated that he did not have any luxury vehicles left and asked if I wanted what he had available. I explained that I made a reservation for and prepaid for a for a luxury vehicle. He then picked up the phone call called someone to search for one. After a ten-minute wait, I inquired again. He then called again and stated they found a vehicle and will bring it up in 5 minutes. Twenty minutes later, the vehicle arrived. I was finally able to depart. For the day of return, I filled up the gas tank then drove no more than ten miles at the drop-off location. The dashboard showed the vehicle was FULL yet my receipt showed a fuel service charge for $16.64 for 17.3 gallons in tank vs. 19-gallon capacity. Due fuel recovery systems and allowance for expansion, it is unlcear to me if you can actually fill the vehicle to its stated capacity. I don't care what math AVIS is using, I felt cheated on the fuel service charge. Of my years of travel, this ranks as one of the top 5 worst rental car experiences. This is definitely not what I have previously experienced as a long time AVIS Preferred customer. Finally, I was never treated this way with your competitor (Hertz Gold Plus Rewards). This will definitely influence who I book my business with in the future. read more

All started out wrong (when I picked up the phone to reserve). Gave me a car with grinding brakes and front end (knowing I flew in from out of state and had plenty driving to do with my family in the car). Had to exchange part way through first leg of trip, not the greatest feeling telling family we have to serve for a place to exchange because the 800 number is a joke for emergency road service, just a phone loop and your on your own with no extra help. Eventually found a place on my own after driving way out my way and that didn't bother any of the reps feeling uncomfortable with the noise and feelings of possible breakdown, did want to wait for road service in the middle of nowhere. Once I got to a place, they gave me the bottom of the barrel with tires that had zero rubber on them also knowing I needed to travel a further distance. Tryed to exchange down the road after calling again (same phone loop). Found another place plenty of cars but known available for us, the guy suggested that I look elsewhere, didn't even look at me. Long story short, I had drive and continue out journey on wings and a prayer, with a great deal of miles to travel. No word from anyone, I'm sure the bill and survey will be on time. Do not rent a vehicle from here! They are literally a bait and switch type rental facility. I preselected a mid-size SUV and when I went to pick the car up at the airport was told I could have a Chevy Malibu at no additional cost. I said that is not the same cost, and I would expect a refund for the difference. Secondly, they doubled my rental for charged that were not clearly indicated on the receipt and upon calling to find out they said it was for insurance I declined, as well as the gas service; which I did agree to but was told it was only for the gas used not a full tank. However, the customer service is telling me something different than I was told at the counter. Lastly, they do not provide you with a copy of the contract but reference it when charging you the additional fees. read more

The agent was very professional and patient. She also provided an upgrade from a small size car and a really great discount. Rented a minivan here and they don't have one . They're giving me an Explorer with less seating and baggage space, and refused a price change. This location also regularly charges for gas even when you return with a full tank. Take a picture of your dashboard odometer and fuel gauge at pick up and return. You'll need it to get the extra charges reversed. read more

WARNING!!! IF I could give a ZERO, I would! Do NOT rent from Avis!! We preordered/prepaid for a luxury vehicle for a trip so we had a lot of room. Entered Avis at PIT only to wait until the man was done eating his breakfast. He said he would get the Chevy Malibu ready! I explained that the paperwork I showed him, which he ignored, had a luxury vehicle on it. He said they would SEE if they had one! When they radioed back, he said they would have to clean it. He continually tried to get to add on more costs with other options including EZ Pass. I had to explain THREE times we had our EZ Pass with us and we didn't need theirs. When we got the car, the inside was okay but the outside front windshield was loaded with DEAD bugs. I had to clean it before our trip started so we could see. No complaints with the car. Upon returning the vehicle, they sent an e-receipt which I failed to look at for a couple of days. Now I see it has an additional $18.90 charged!! I was on hold for a supervisor for 52 minutes before my problem was addressed. She listened and credited the $18.90 as it had already been prepaid as a PA rental tax and state surcharge. Check your bills carefully especially after you return the vehicle! Renter beware!! read more

The past 2 times I traveled to PIT for work, I tried to book cars (more than a week ahead of arriving each time) through National, since that's the "company preferred" rental car company. But each time they told me they were sold out. So, last time I used Budget and on this most recent trip I used Avis. This Avis location was decent. The process of getting the key was somewhat quick. The car was OK. Checking it back in was great, great service when I checked it in. Overall, I've got no complaints and would use them again. read more

Such a waste of time! My daughter's college is almost 1000 miles away and I needed a bigger vehicle as she was trying to take her whole life with her to her new dorm. I reserved and prepaid for a Chevy Tahoe to move her. I traveled 40 minutes to the Pittsburgh International Airport because that was the only AVIS location open on a Sunday. I get there and the Tahoe I reserved was not available! Why send me a confirmation email and keep sending me reminder emails if the vehicle I paid for in full isn't even available? I was given a Toyota Highlander instead. I went to the AVIS pick up booth, which was dark and unattended. I had to wait over 30 minutes in the freezing cold for them to bring it to me. I literally drove it less than 4 miles around the airport, pulled over to put the third row seats down to see the exact room and then returned it as it was too small. Julia at the counter has apologetic and helpful. She tried to even give me two vehicles to make up for it, but that wouldn't work as my wife and I will need to take turns driving since we now have to get there in one day! I then received an invoice for $100 plus later that same day! I should not be charged because of AVIS's incompetence! Why say a vehicle is available and even let me not only reserve it, but also pay for it in full if it is not? Now instead of being able to split the 13 hour drive into two days we will now have to squeeze it into one! I guess being a AVIS Preferred Customer means absolutely squat! Finally an employee shows up in the garage booth after 30 min wait, now there is a line of 5-6 customers so another 35 minutes standing in line and waiting. Due to a severe shortage of staff, it has taken 90 minutes or more to receive a reserved, pre-rented car. There are 10 people standing in the garage waiting for cars, and the staff seems to be bringing cars that have not been rented instead of bringing the cars we are all standing around and waiting for. I was supposed to attend a meeting that I will miss. The company should not be renting cars knowing that they can't deliver them. Had I been informed two weeks ago when I rented this car, that there would be a 90 + minute wait, I would very definitely rented from a different agency. Now that I am here, I am captive to their delays. With so many people being affected, I would not be surprised if someone suggests a class action. Do your homework. Be sure you know which company has both the cars and the staff to rent you a car. read more

The Avis at Pittsburgh Airport is awful. As others have said, I stood in line for over an hour, got to the one rep working there finally and she spent a good ten minutes telling us all how hard it is and nobody shows up for work, etc. Weird. She then calls someone on the radio to bring up the car I reserved over a month ago. During this time she keeps going on about how she is the only person there and doesn't know where the manager is. Finally she tries the radio again and the person on the other end said "Yeah, I will get it when I can". She then remembers she has an Expedition someone turned in, I agree to take it rather than wait for the pickup truck. The car was dirty, had many scratches and damage to it so I took pictures and headed out as there was no other option and the other companies were out of cars. Now for the worst part of the story, returning the car. There was a return line easily 20 cars deep, nobody was out there checking in cars so we went inside and stood in line. The person at the counter told us that the Manager is busy and we can wait to have the car checked in if want but it may be awhile. Meanwhile we have a plane to catch. She says "No worries, just lock the car and put the keys in the drop box and the manager will check all the cars in when she can." I get home to Idaho and a week later get messages saying I haven't turned in the car. Called customer service and they said "Ohh, don't worry, I can see the car on tracking and it is already rented to someone else. You will not be charged. It looks like it just didn't get checked in." They did close out the rental and send me a correct final receipt. I thought it was over until today (3 weeks later), I received a letter in the mail saying they will be charging my credit card $450 for "Excessive Interior dirt/sand". I only used the car on pavement and there was NO dirt or sand in it. I called corporate again and they said "Sorry, yeah, it wasn't even checked in, not sure why they charged you the cleaning fee." They say they will reverse the charge in 5-7 days. I fly to Pittsburgh ALOT and yes there have been many issues with the other car rental companies there (usually they are out of cars) so i thought I would try Avis. Hopefully this is not the way they usually do business. read more

Rented a car in January for a trip in June. When we got to the rental counter we were told they overbooked and we had to get a car from a different place. Although they arranged for us to get the other car, it was off the property of the airport so we had to wait for a car to arrive so they could drive us there. Then we had to wait and fill out all the paper work again. Getting back, we had to pay to get to the off airport property rental place to return the car instead of just driving ourselves to the airport and returning the car. This is without doubt the worst Avis location. I rented 22 times last year from different locations so I know what I am talking about. Right before the massive snowstorms that hit Pittsburgh before Christmas, they gave me a car with bald tires! It was a one way rental so I think the location just wanted me to drive the car to the drop off location so it was no longer their problem. I returned it and when I took it back their agent said "and why do you want to exchange the car" and I said, look at the tires. Her response, "they are bald" Very, very dangerous. Nobody at the desk apologized. I am guessing they just rented it to the next person they could. They were also almost out of cars and were rejecting people whose reservations were less than 24 hours prior. The reservation system is supposed to prevent you reserving when there are no cars available at a location, but it was letting people make reservations, then when they landed, no cars. read more

Beware I did an extension on my rental which they took the 250.00 security deposit which then I should have been charged 360.00 for after the deposit. I ended up getting sick in paid for extra day and returned car Saturday morning instead of Friday . And this sneaky company sent me email with total charges to credit card 785.00. Talking about for extension n road side assistance which I never agreed to. Due to I have AAA. ALL I PAID FOR AT THE TIME THAT I RENTED THE CAR WAS THEIR INSURANCE ON THE CAR ONLY. If I could give zero stars I would. This place is staffed by people who are untrained or inexperienced. I had a flat about ten miles from this location. Called Avis roadside assistance immediately and went to hell and back to get a tow. Even though it showed up as being towed to this location no one could get this fixed for me to close out my rental even though it was on their grounds. Refused to refunre me unused gas. When I received car, it has only 18.9gal from their receipt. When I returned car, it has 23 gallons. I called the the customer service and manager made the decision to not refund. This does not make any sense. As a customer, if we does not fuel the car to the gauge amount what we receiceved the car, we will be charged to 4.5 dollars per gallon of any differences in the gas gauge. It is an unfair rule. First and last time renting with Avis. They have the worst customer service people working the airport counter in Pittsburgh. Raven the Avis agent was by far the most verbally abusive angry person I've ever encountered in a professional position. She asked for a reservation number and as I was pulling it out of my phone, she walked away. Then Raven came back, asked again and I told her that I had it when she asked for it the first time, but she walked away. She became so angry when I said that and walked away again. She was so mean, angry, uncaring and she yelled at me and threatened to call the police and not to rent us a car a couple of times because of what I said, which would be no big deal normally, but she flew off the handle at me and also called someone on the phone and talked about me in front of my face! Over the top behaviour! We traveled in a red eye flight over 8 1/2 hours, no sleep and we were desperate for the car, so we dealt with her verbal abuse and we rented a car. But I will never rent from Avis ever again!! We were in town to see my hubby's dying dad in the hospital and had never been to Pittsburgh, what a horrible experience all around. Raven was our welcome to Pittsburgh encounter, horrible just horrible!!!! Threatened to call the Police for what???!!!!! She rattled both me and my husband in a very public humiliation! Giving the 5 star review because even though they close at 1:00am they stayed open for me since my flight had been delayed. While in flight my husband called in and the manager said I wouldn't need to worry and that someone would wait for me- he was right. Airport Location - Inside the depths of the parking garage, there sits the Preferred Booth, however fortunately, for those who aren't in that membership, as you get to the baggage claim, you will find the rental booth counters. Fortunately for all, their customer service seems to work to the renter's benefit. The counter folks at the Preferred Booth, were friendly, and welcoming (he seems to have a lot of work to do, but stopped immediately, to greet). With all things, go with a smile, you'll get on in return, be kind, rewind, and you will treat you good. =) The location is outside the doors, marked "Rental Car Pickup" just left of the Avis terminal counter. Prepaid and reserved for a 7-seat van a month in advance. We even showed up at the pickup location 1 hour ahead. The staff there just said they ran out of 7-seat vans, and there's nothing they can do. Attitude was bad too. The staff's literal word was "First come first serve, that's how it works in rental car world". No sincere apology whatsoever... Excuse me, what's the point of reserving, paying in advance, selecting a pickup time then if it's "first come first serve". Plus, as when we asked for a refund, they just threw us a customer service number to call. We also had two elderly 80+ years old. Update: Had to stay in the airport hotel last night because I was stranded. I have woke up early and have tried 3 times to call the Avis counter. No one picks up and it goes to a national overseas call center who can not confirm with someone in Pittsburgh if they actually have rental cars or if I'm headed back to the airport to waste more of my time. read more

This is a terribly managed Avis location. I travel to Pittsburgh once a month because my company is headquartered there. There are never enough cars, the employees act like they dont care and on three occasions, I have talked with Avis customers that had been waiting for hours for cars to rent. They simply stand around the Avis Preferred booth waiting for cars. And its not even indoors. Perhaps the most annoying thing is that this location does not use the Avis app. So being a Avis Preffered member does no good. You will wait in line with everyone else looking to rent a car. I dont understand why this location cannot get it together. read more

Gene went out of his way to help us and we are very appreciative. We have been traveling to Pittsburgh for the last 18 months since my son moved there for school. Each time we've rented through Avis and I have never had a problem. We recently went to Pittsburgh for the entire week of Thanksgiving and had additional family members traveling with us but I forgot to request a larger vehicle. Gene, in the preferred booth, went out of his way to procure a 7 seater mini-van for us. Thank you Gene and you helped make our holiday trip to Pittsburgh a success.
