I came here vis-avis some friends and... ok I can't back that up, I was alone this day. I had a pretty mixed experience at this Avis. So my rental car was basically breaking down and being psycho all the way from Boston to Connecticut so I stopped in here and explained the problem and they seem very unwilling to help - but when I put my foot down and put some pressure on them and insisted that I get a new car, they gave me one of the other cars that was here. The replacement car wasn't bad but it wasn't great. It smelled weird but so does your mother. The worst part is that they said I would need to drive the broken car to go and get it filled up with gas otherwise I would be charged and extortionate amount like $20 per gallon of gas. But the car was broken. I mean, it was dangerous to drive and ready to break down. Would barely get over 20mph. So that should have been waived. Very unprofessional and risked both their car and my holiday. For this reason I can only give 2 stars, but I was really really glad that they did actually give me a car which is why it doesn't get one star. read more

I will NEVER use these people again! First, they didn't give me the car that I was supposed to get. Day 2, the battery is dead. Then, they can't bring me a replacement and pick up the dead vehicle at the same time. Instead, I have to ride with the tow truck all the way to Warwick to get a replacement! AND, to top it off, not only is my whole day shot, but I have to pay for the gas that I use to get from Warwick to Norwich! Absolute unreal! read more

I have rented vehicles for 8 weeks from Avis. 4 vehicles in 8 weeks have failed and I have been stranded by roadside assistance. 4 vehicles in 8 weeks. Be very careful if renting through Avis. Beyond being out of pocket having to repair vehicles. Or given no other option. Watch billing very closely. The worst customer service I have experienced in my life. Tried escalating to management and in return I have been double charged And need to work with my bank to rectify. It's gotten so bad I have had to obtain legal advice as if you call them out on incompetence they pass the buck and no one from the VP Robert Calderone. To James Tucker. And others I won't name for now.ive had to file a complaint with the BBB and so much more. So please beware. Choose another rental company or be stranded on the highway. And wrongly billed. I can never get a hold of anyone when calling the local Phone # on the Website. Never, anytime morning, afternoon or evening.

Location in Groton was very hard to find. They are located in an abandoned airport. There was one person working who was cleaning cars & manning the counter. Long line waiting and there was a sign on the counter. When it was my turn to check out the associate told me I would be charged a deposit fee, that I would get back upon return. I asked if this was in writing. He said "no but don't worry we do it all the time." I was shocked that this would not be in writing so I called customer service. The 800 customer service was no help. After many calls and button pushing I finally got a representative who could not answer any questions. She told me that the agency would give it to me in writing. When I told her that he wasn't, she said well I am not there I can not help you. There is a severe disconnect and lack of communication between front service and corporate. Also poor management. So I waited in line again to get my car. While I was in line there was another customer complaining about the cost changing & that she was being charged mileage. The clerk got on the phone with his manager. The manager said to tell her don't worry she will not be charged. She asked if she could speak with the manager, the clerk told her that the manager would call her tomorrow. I was given my car & I had to ask for him to come out to do a walk around with me because I did not want to be responsible for any existing damage. When I returned the car an associate in the parking lot took my keys. Once again had to ask him to do a walk around with me when I went inside, I was given no paperwork. I asked about my deposit and he said it would go back in my account again nothing in writing that I returned the car in good condition. The deposit in my account was not charged. It just shows as declined. I am limited on space in this review so I can not tell you all of my experience with the 800 line. I will NEVER do business with Avis again. Very shady! read more

If it were possible to do zero stars that's what this review would be. I've never seen such a lack of care or incompetence & I've rented from a lot of car rental facilities across the country. I'm pretty sure this place already has no business since both times going there we were the only people & the same employees who were talking to each other & giving us no mind were there. Should have known it was bad that they didn't have us check the car out before taking it & just said they had just checked it. If that is so that's very scary since the oil life literally had 3 % which is extremely dangerous to drive. This rental was for a work event that I worked out of state so not only did Avis rent me a car with no oil but the tire was showing a psi of 14! 14 when it's supposed to be 40. I had to stop twice (after working 12 hour days) to put air in the car with my own time & money. Upon arrival today for my return I decided not to return back with the car's gas full because clearly for the inconvenience of renting me an unsafe car they wouldn't nickel & dime me for gas when I had to spend my own money filling the tires so that I wouldn't get stuck or worse cause an accident. After telling these same 2 employees, (Chad & Wanda) who once again barely stopped their own conversation to acknowledge us, their response was how much gas was if we didn't return it full. Literally no lack of compassion, empathy or even recognition that what they did was completely dangerous & they would be held liable if anything were to happen. I see now that they already have a 1 star review so letting them know we were writing a review did not phase them. Terrible customer service. Very sad but at the very least I hope this helps keep others safe. I know this area is smaller but there's gotta be better out there! read more

The man working today was uninformative and unenthusiastic. He did not give me all of the information regarding my reservation, it was like we'd be talking about something and he'd say "oh yeah..." then there'd be a new rule or regulation he didn't mention before or worse, another fee for something! I don't usually use Avis and now I remember why. Not only was he unhelpful in-person, when I tried to talk to reservation reps they, again did not explain everything up front. I was able to book two different reservations online and then in person, already AT THE LOCATIONS (yes two separate locations) I was told at 1) I couldn't rent with a debit card and at the second location they didn't have the car I even reserved! My experiences with Avis in general have been okay to good - not great, but okay for the most part. (I prefer Enterprise, much higher service and better fleet). This particular office however, seems pretty inept or just don't really care about the customer. I have rented from them twice - each time disappointing. Each time I arrive they are anything but enthusiastic to see a customer, I had the distinct impression it was more like you were a nuisance. This last time I rented a Full-sized car for a 9am pickup. I arrived at 9:15, they had my paper work already printed (a good sign) like they were ready for me. When they looked at their cars they attendant informed me he needed to go clean my car - so I waited 20 min while it was cleaned, making me a little late. I don't understand, they knew I was coming, I confirmed the reservation with a Credit Card, they had the correct car on hand, but they didn't think it might me a good idea to have the car ready at the rental time? I think the attendants are a bit disgruntled and it shows. If you're renting in Groton I recommend Enterprise, if not then Budget is also at the airport. read more

So now we where renting 2 cars and driving one,after much time on the phone my wife was told charges would be coming off for the 2nd car in as much as 5-10 days...grrrr The car smelled of cigars(something we hadn't noticed until we where on the road.We have a wonderful vacation with our grand daughter and dropped the car off and got Trish the person who added the 2nd car!! Oh No! We wait for it...sure enough she asks"and how do you want to pay for this!" are you effing kidding me for the 60th time its PREPAID!!! So we walk away thinking oh well that's behind us.oh NO Ernie Owner/operator has something else up his sleeve.The next day we check the bank account we are charged $273.29 for our prepaid car from AVIS! ...so on the phone we go again we are told we didn't fill up the car!( a total bullshit lie we topped off at the shell down the road) Well ernie owner/operator that's a lot of gas don't you think? The guy at the counter (Ernie) showed up to the counter 10 minutes after I was standing there. He ran my card and told me all they had was a 12 passenger van which I ofcourse refused. Not what I reserved. My whole weekend was ruined because of this experience not to mention my wifes who needed our car that I had to use. I recieved no compensation for this and was never told there were no cars available until AFTER I SHOWED UP ON TIME AND MY CARD WAS RUN!!! Ridiculous experience. read more

The agent and his supervisor at this specific location, upsells hard on the insurance by making it seem "mandatory". Basically in order to walk away with a truck you need to buy insurance. I'm guessing these sales agents make a large commission on this upsell. But lying to the customer is unethical. read more

Absolutely horrible customer service, we have been loyal customers and happy customers up until our last rental, we rented a vehicle for a weekend get away thinking there would be nothing to worry about as we about two hours into our trip our check engine light came on and we had to spend much time in a panic trying to figure out why it was on, so we limited our drive time to make sure we could get home safely, we found a dirty nasty chewed tooth pick on our clock, and multiple chewed finger nails from the previous driver on our dash board, and we did have our beagle with us, and they turn around and want to charge us unfairly $250.00 for dog hair in the car, but not willing to compromise a deal for the fact we had a dirty and a potentially dangerous vehicle?
