Three stars = A-OK. We'd be happy to stay here again. Neptune House is clean and comfy--very basic accommodation, a little outdated, some repairs needed--but cozy and well located. In comparison to similar properties offered via the Interval timeshare exchange program, fewer ammenities.
One very nice thing--the hotel staff (Samantha) called us several days prior to our check-in date to ask if we knew how we'd be getting to Block Island. She explained that to bring a car over on the ferry, you must have a reservation. This was very much appreciated because we did not know this and may have been quite disappointed to arrive at Point Judith ferry dock and find no spots left. Additionally, Samantha let us know details about what food and drink options would be, given our arrival was two weeks prior to the beginning of the summer season on the island. This was exceptional customer service and very much appreciated. We were forewarned that most restaurants would not be open yet, and that the small grocery store on island can be pricey. So, four starts for exceptional service prior to check-in!
Check-in was quick and easy. The reception/office area was mostly closed during our stay, but they posted a sign with phone numbers to call should there be any questions or problems. We never made use of it because we had no problems. The reception area had a large library of VHS movies, a few board games, and a pool table. Our room had a good TV, limited Directv channels, and a working VHS movie player.
Without asking, we were offered a free upgrade to a room with a view, again very much appreciated customer service. There were very few other people on site, so it would have been ashame not to have had the better room. From our top floor bedroon, which has a walkout door to balcony on one side and a large picture window on another side, we had fantastic views across the island and the sea in the distance. Gorgeous views to wake to. The balcony had tables for picnicing and viewing the sunsets. Bed was comfortable. Room decor was very basic. There was a private bathroom in the upstairs master suite area--dated but with a clean tub and lots of very hot water for soaking.
Downstairs, there was a small living room area with TV, a kitchennete, and a small oversized chair with pull-out bed which could accomodate an extra guest or children. There was also a half bath downstairs.
The kitchenette had a small gas stove, small fridge, and microwave. We cooked all week (because most restaurants were not open for the season),a nd the facilities were fine. The cabinets were a bit banged up, but the applianced worked fine.
Overall, Block Island was a fabulous, peaceful, restful vacation for us. There were quite a few beaches, some sandy, some rocky. During the season, I could see that there were some activities such as fishing trips, boat rides, etc. There were lots of moped and bike rental places, and several nice walking/hiking trails--all with beautiful views to the sea.
I would totally recommend Block Island and Neptune House if you are looking for a quiet, walking-oriented holiday. No night life here, although a local pub, Club Soda, had a decent selection of beer and drinks and bar food. Friendly service at Club Soda, too! read more
