I had a week long rental for a work trip. Pick up and drop off were both at the Newport Mall location. The car was stinky, almost like a litterbox, but also smelled like Febreeze or something was used heavily in attempt to deodorize the car. This made the smell worse. It was also dirty on the outside even though it was parked in a garage. Check in and check out were both slow and agents did not know how to deal with a corporate account. It took over 45 minutes waiting to check out. Calls to the Newport location were not answered. Every time I called the main customer service line it took a long time to get through the system and then had to be transferred to the special agents who handled corporate accounts. Then the kicker, mark the vehicle as having a full tank when it has 250 miles to empty and after filling up has 450 miles to empty? Half a tank = full tank I guess. It isn't the locations fault the staff there is great. We rented a car and inadvertently left something on the counter. I tried to call the direct line that lead me to a number manned by AI which was to rent a car. Twice after waiting for a person I got different numbers that went right back to the AI manned number. After speaking with a Supervisor was told you cannot speak with someone at the location. This is not good customer service. read more

Besides the headache that the front desk gave us, the worst nightmare was with E Tolls. I already bought the E Pass with Avis, but it doesn't work at all. We spent almost an hour during our trip trying to resolve the problem with the customer service, but the guy who talked to us couldn't help us at all after asking three times our order number -- he didn't write it out and enter into the system for 30 mins. So we had to ask for the manager. A month after we returned the van, Avis still emailed us trying to charge us more for E Tolls. I already paid around 100 for Tolls (from on the road and from Avis invoice), but today another invoice came in and it's 106 dollars. Absolutely awful Service. First, we paid online to pick up a car at Avis in Brooklyn. My husband got there, no car available. I spent 30 minutes on hold with Avis. The gentlemen said the car would be waiting for him at the Jersey city location. We needed a car because ours is in the body shop. We paid 56 dollars for an Uber to Jersey City. The person helping my husband at that location was totally incompetent & rude. Long story short, he has no rental car available! My husband wasted half the day all for nothing. Did two full circles around the mall looking but couldn't find the drop off location. Parked it at the closest spot to the Avis, took a picture and went to return it. He refused to accept the car until it was in the right spot. Where was it you may ask, "clearly marked" and that all the hint I got. After calling Avis, I'll just return it elsewhere that's completely inconvenient to me, the customer. Avis customer service wasn't much more help so I guess I'll just take my business elsewhere. "Preferred plus" means nothing, I guess. Just, wow. Avoid this location if at all possible and perhaps Avis in general. read more

My worst possible experience with a rental car company. This location has no process whatsoever and people just stand in long lines, be it for pickup or drop off. Their is no preferential treatment for Avis Preferred members as well, and we had to wait in line for over an hour to pick up our car. There's usually just one person at the counter dealing with everything and he's also very slow. So if you're renting a car from this location, be prepared to wait at least an hour or more. Lot's of negativity for this location. Not sure why. First off - the office is in the ground level in the mall, not in the garage where the cars are located. This will save you tons of time. If you come from the PATH Newport station, you can cross the street and take a passage way through a building and into the mall and right to their desk. Now that is out of the way. I have rented here a couple of times and I have had a very good experience. The people were friendly and got me in and out quickly. The cars were easy to locate in the parking garage and I was on my way. The cars are always what I reserved, are clean, full of gas and in good working order. What else do you need to know? Renting cars in NJ is way cheaper than in Manhattan, so it is a bit of a hike, but totally worth it. read more

CAR PICKUP IS INSIDE THE MALL, BY THE INFORMATION DESK ON THE GROUND FLOOR. Why Avis doesn't tell you this on the reservation confirmation I have no idea. Car return is on the B level of the parking lot in the marked Avis spots, and then you have to go inside the mall to the Avis desk to return the keys and tell them the spot number you parked in. Also take a picture of the mileage, they need that when checking you out. Take the parking slip you got when entering the garage with you to the Avis desk to return the keys. All of the above information would have been useful to have been told on my reservation confirmation and/or when I picked up the car. The person I picked up the car from was very quick, but also kind of dismissive of some questions I had about the car rental. I tried calling this location but the phone went straight to the National number, and the representative did not have much information about where the actual rental desk was. Very annoying. When I found the rental desk there was one employee hanging out with a friend, so I am not sure why my phone call to this location could not have been answered. Also the employee kind of rushed through my check out, I got the impression to go back to talking to her friend. There was someone else working when I returned the car and she was much more professional, but she was not able to apply my coupon because the checkout employee had not noted it on the reservation when I picked the car up. Absolute nightmare of an experience with this Avis. Upon arrival to pickup my vehicle at scheduled time, I was informed I would need to wait for my requested vehicle to be returned. I asked how long that would be to which they answered they did not know. I had to take another vehicle I was extremely uncomfortable driving. They did not walk me to the vehicle nor allow me to provide the pre inspection notes on condition of the rental. My scheduled return time was after the location was closed. My experience with customer service for the last 72+ hours trying to get the receipt promised between 24-48 hours, has been extremely frustrating. Avis requires you to wait an additional 24-48 hours to escalate the issue or to speak to a supervisor. This local Avis has still not closed the case 72 hours later. I will be informing my very large network of this absolutely horrific experience with Avis, and it is safe to say I will never use Avis for personal or professional use ever again. read more

I had a reservation for a car at Hertz which I had rented from a week before, which was disastrous and disappointing. Assumed it was a fluke and tried again for this past weekend. Booked the car, needed to change it for pickup Saturday at 12pm. No problem. Got there at 12:20pm on Saturday. Closed. Pissed, called Hertz. Absolutely no help. Apparently was charged a no show on the rental and told them to cancel it and refund, said they did. And lied. Walked into the mall. Saw an Avis/Budget desk in the first floor in the center of the mall. Asked them how late they were available. 5PM! Score. Went online. Booked the car, went downstairs after having lunch and picked up the agreement and proceeded to the garage to pick up the car. Easy breezy and the guys at the desk and in the garage were terrific. The whole thing took 15 minutes TOPS. Returning the car was simple enough. Go to b9 have them inspect it and park it in B10. Take the keys into the desk inside the mall and done. This is how a business that wants your business does business. They have mine from now on! Five stars. Screw Hertz. read more

We rented a car from Avis Newport Centre after all the car rental prices in the city were $130 and up. I found a car here for only $30 - yes, only $30. After taxes and insurance, it was still only $51. That was pretty amazing for the area, even if it meant I had to take a trip down one subway, then on the PATH train to Jersey with all my bags. It was worth it. Keep in mind, the counter is in the middle of the mall, on the first floor under the food court and movie theater. It is not a storefront, but rather a desk just like Guest Services on one side of the main elevator. It's easy to walk right passed. When we arrived, we were greeted and taken care of quickly. We had requested a compact car, and we were *upgraded* to a subcompact Chrysler 200. I mainly prefer compact because of the gas mileage more than anything else. Nonetheless, we accepted. After all, we had read previous reviews about someone waiting for over an hour just to get a compact car. Where Avis Newport Centre loses a star - is although helpful - no one is dressed in a uniform, and the staff is not exactly the most professional. Once we were done at the counter in the mall, the guy sent us to pick up the car in the parking garage, where someone would be waiting for us. There was someone, Maurice, who was in fact waiting for us - in street clothes - who seemed bothered as we checked out the car for scratches and damages etc. Maurice was friendly, however, and did try to help us as we checked everything out. He noted that the gas was at a 3/4 tank. When we returned the car, the Avis Car Return was kind of hidden in the garage. But when we finally found it, it was just a few spots designated with an Avis sign at the front of the garage next to the mall entrance. We did have to wait a short while back at the counter as there were two parties in front of us returning at the same time - but it went quickly. There were no surprise charges thankfully, but for some reason it was noted that the gas was given to us at a full tank, when as mentioned above it was actually 3/4. The staff did change it accordingly after a very brief back and forth. All in all, I would rent from here again - just with the right expectations. Keep in mind, they give you a paid parking ticket to exit the garage - but for some reason some of the gates wouldn't take it, while another would. Literally, when I pressed "help" on the machine at the exit gate, the person at the other end told me to back up (luckily, there were no cars behind me), and go to a different exit gate. Also, when you bring the car back after you are finished with the rental, you have to bring the parking ticket you receive when you enter the garage to the Avis counter. If you lose either ticket (the one to exit, or the one from when you bring the car back, we were told it is a $25.00 charge. read more

Absolute joke of a company. Slow, unhelpful, and full of employees just looking for a paycheck. I got here on time a little before 8, and it took over an hour for me to be on my way. Why? The staff. They took forever at the desk reconfirming everything that I had already confirmed online, had a "printer problem", and then were told to go into the parking garage to find our car, only to find it eventually a few aisles over. That's putting aside that they can't just bring you the damn car. No apology, no nothing. Extra employees were standing around by their desk in the mall. The only somewhat helpful employees were in the garage. Only you won't be able to tell they're even employees, as they're in plain clothes and are mostly just talking shit between each other (nice guys though). I don't care if they're much worse than the other Avises or not, I'm never dealing with Avis again--and especially these idiots--if I have any choice what so ever. Dollar Rent a Car is also bad, but at least they're cheaper (Avis was like $300 for 2 days for a subcompact). Never again. read more

The worst pickup experience ever from any car rental, the worst return experience ever from any car rental. Got the rudest "service" at pick up. Picked up a car in Bangor airport in Maine around mid night. The signs there were pretty confusing so I asked the only guy there if that's the spot for AVIS pickup, the guy dismissed with "I don't know what you are talking about", and guess what I got the keys from him. Another gentleman walked up to me later to comfort me saying "I'm sorry you are treated that way. That's really rude". Most confusing and frustrating experience of returning. Returned the car in New Jersey. Saw a sign at the parking lot saying returning for AVIS. But there was no one there to accept the car, nor a drop box. Turns out I need to park the car and return the key to a counter in the nearby shopping mall. Buy there's no sign guiding sign to their counter. Their number on google map is wrong so I couldn't reach them their store closed after twenty minutes. Ended up calling AVIS general customer service the next morning to get their address and number. The address was WRONG again, luckily the number was right and I finally found them. Then they insist to charge me 23 dollars for not returning the key the day before. read more

We've used them a couple times and have recently stopped. The first few times it was great! We were upgraded to a nice new SUV at no cost (b/c the car we rented was no longer available when we got there) and the staff was very friendly. However, I've noticed as the months have gone on, there prices have gone through the roof. The last rental I looked at (for a 24hr period) was over $550!! I nearly fell off my chair. A even worse experience beyond my worst imagination! Avoid at all cost for your own safety and travel experience!! My friends and I reserved a Sedan two days prior to our travel date. The owner checked us in and gave us a Pickup instead. We tried to communciate with him politely and asked if you can get the model we actually booked for. He yelled at us to step away (yes,he actually yelled!) and said that is what they have for us，take it or leave it. Majority of our group are Asians, and I highly suspect he was being racist because we saw he treated the White customer next in line curteously and give them a Sedan (exactly what he claimed to be out of stock) . As the owner refused to communciate, we called Avis customer service. He saw us callling and suddenly changed his attitude to give us a Sedan. However, this car has a tire pressure problem. Again, we went to talk to him. He claimed 2 out of 3 of their cars have this problem due to special condition of the parking lot, and the pressure will become normal after a short while. Guess what, not surprising actually, the tire pressure had never become normal for the entire day! A huge safety concern. I will stop my complaint here. I lived in North America for 15 years. Have never seen a more racist, irresponsible and unprofessional business owner like him. If you want to have a safe and pleseant trip, stay away from this place! read more

I was trying to explain my issue and he was reluctant to even hear me out. Initially he put me on hold as soon as I said I have an issue with my reservation and later just hung up. I called back again, and as I just started telling him what happened he cut the call. I called him up again but he directly said I don't want to talk any more. Ok, so the reviews on here are not exaggerated one bit. I picked up my car on a Saturday. The desk is in the mall, ground floor, at the back to the right of the elevators. People manning the counter are sketchy and have their buddy's hanging around playing on their phone. The car was dirty inside and the gas was 3/4 full when I picked it up. Also, there was no EZ-Pass so I had the privilege of paying a lot of tolls on the New Jersey turnpike in cash! That was awesome! Anyways, I took the car out and returned it on the same day. You don't get the car scanned in or out. They just give you the keys and you head to the mall parking lot where there is a designated row for Avis vehicles. When you return, you need to keep your parking voucher and hand it back to the desk attendant with the keys. There is no drop box so you need to return the vehicle before 9pm as the attendant office closes by then. Anyways, I returned the keys and was told that I couldn't get a receipt because the printer was down. They had my email on file because I'm a preferred member so the attendant said I'd get an email of my receipt. Welp, never got an email of my receipt but I have received harassing phone calls from Avis accusing me of not returning the car! Because this location doesn't scan you in or out, the car never got added back to the inventory when I returned it so they think it's still in my possession. I've tried calling this location directly asking them to tell Avis that I returned the vehicle but, just as the other reviewers have said, this Avis location doesn't answer their phone. So, bottom line, if you don't want to be a party to this amount of disorganization and chaos, I suggest you don't rent a car from this place. read more

Do not rent from here, they will swindle you. First of all, there is no office and I rented a car from someone who had a bucket full of keys in the back of a pickup truck in a mall parking lot. They gave me no receipt or paper contract, there's no printer. When I was talking to the gentlemen renting me the car, he asked if I wanted a toll package. I told him yes, and then immediately said actually no, please do not put that on there, as I will not be going to many tolls. The guy said, "oh sure, no worries, I'll make sure you're not charged for it and take it off." When I got my bill, I was in fact charged for it! Almost $100 dollars! When I called up customer service the person I spoke with basically told me "You have a signed contract asking for this. You should have made sure our employee actually took it off the bill." Do. Not. Use. Avis. Do NOT use this location especially. They have people working there that will intentionally charge you extra, NOT give you a paper contract to read through (they're working out of a pickup truck with no printer), and then when you try to be made whole, they tell you too bad. Agree with other bad reviews. I rent here 2-3 times a month for work. Dirty cars, rude staff that move verrrryyy slowwwwly. Heard one guy yell at a customer "its not my job to smile!" Reservations are sometimes not honored on weekends because they have no cars and there is never recognition of my top tier preferred status. Manager tries hard but results are poor. Easily the worst franchise in the network and I travel and rent a lot across the country. Weekends are the worst.
