Do not come here. They ripped me off charging me $150 for 1 day claiming it's Memorial Day weekend rates. It was Wednesday 5/20/26. It's not the weekend. I had no choice and was desperate so I agreed but never again. Very disappointed. The Avis name just lost all value for me. Super close to the train station. I called in advance to ask for rates and to start the process of registration so I could go asap but they refused and now I see why. They wanted to lock me in at this ridiculous rate where I was stuck bc I already got there and no time or a waste of money to uber to another car rental. Went to the parking lot to pick up the car and there are so many cars here so there is no demand as it's not the weekend and they are not all booked obviously because I even asked a question, are these all rental cars and he said yes. And then on top of that of course the device itself for the tolls are seven dollars as a base and any toll that you incur. I felt so swindled and I wanted to tell them that I'm gonna Put in a really bad review because this place is not honest and not nice and not business friendly. Instead, it gouges you of your money. I don't think they want that kind of reputation on Google and Yelp. Taking money at this crazy rate I have never had just ruins your reputation and doesn't make repeat or loyal customers. I do not recommend this location. Avoid at all costs. I am an Avis Presidents Club Member (Highest Loyalty Elite Tier). I have rented from Avis over 200 cars the past 4-5 years and this is my experience at this location. Incident 1) Rented a Car. The website accepted the reservation. Alls good. Then 30 minutes before it's time to pick up a car I get a call from the location stating they don't have any cars. Incident 2) Location timings are supposed to be until 7:00PM. This was validated by Avis. I show up to return a vehicle to them at 6:34PM. Guess what? Location is closed. I call the Presidents Club line and they proceed to try to call the location and the manager multiple times no response. I then have to drive to ewr to drop off the car and pay for a cab back. All of this has left me with a bad taste for this location. This is highly unreliable and does no justice to the wonderful service I have received by AVIS around the world. I payed toll via cash during my stay in NJ but then I was charged on my Credit Card for that. I called Budget to dispute but i could never get hold of a human being. This place is the worst. They got my contract all wrong especially after we discussed adding unlimited tolls in the back of his shady parking lot. I echo the negative feedback below. While Avis as a brand is usually fine, I do not recommend this location. The owner is rude and misinformed me about a number of questions I asked. I don't think he outright lied, he was just clearly unsure in general which is worse in my opinion as I would rather he say he didn't know than give wrong information, especially when that information is used to make decisions. He is unprofessional. He seems to be the only employee there. Again, avoid this location and try Avis in Montclair or elsewhere. Update: after explaining the situation to Avis Cust Service, they refunded me in a full for the extra charges caused by the Manager in Rutherford. I don't have an issue where anyone was rude to me, but the cars are not cleaned at all. We bought sheets to put over the car seats and lysoled and cleaned all the car hard surfaces ourselves. I do not recommend this location just based off of car sanitation. It had food crumbs and stains everywhere. If I can see this, I can only imagine what I don't see in terms of germs and bacteria. Avoid using this dumpy, dirty AVIS outlet at all costs. There's an Enterprise in Lyndhurst and in Wallington too, with intelligent and obliging staff -- go there. We went here only because we got a discount thru our insurance...and a review of our invoice leaves doubt as to whether that discount was properly applied. Representative at the counter is seriously lacking in social skills, in person and on the phone...barely responsive (so we'll call the main office to deal with that bill). Difficult to deal with or even to have a question answered. At one point we found that a huge ($1700) charge had been held on our credit card, in error, after we called to tell them we had to extend our rental...we will be contesting a couple of extra charges that made it onto our bill as a result of this. The whole experience of renting from this branch was unpleasant and annoying. And to top it off, after the desk rep ran our receipt and handed it to us, he went around the corner behind the desk for a long, loud pee with the bathroom door open. And then popped right back to the desk without troubling to wash his hands. Ugh. read more

What is this place? It's so shady: you enter and the room is completely empty except for the two computer stations where the reps work from. The walls are bare and the place looked so cheap. My boyfriend is from India, so I tend to be very understanding when I am in New Jersey and encounter Indians at a service company, but I was just appalled by the customer service of this store. First of all, the whole thing took FOR EVER and there were only a few people in line in front of us. The reps kept talking among themselves in what seemed to be Gujarati, but I am not sure. Also, the rep moved extremely close to my face to talk and I was immediately taken aback by his horrid breath. When you work with the public, YOU NEED TO HAVE GOOD DENTAL HYGIENE! THIS PLACE IS THE WORST. I came out to Rutherford from Brooklyn to rent a car. After an hour and a half on public transit, I was so ready to be driving my rental! I had called ahead to make sure that 1)they had cars available and 2) they'd accept my debit card. I was assured that I'd be good to go so I made the trek out to jersey. I got there and there was nobody behind the counter. I called twice from the waiting area...no one answered. FINALLY I heard someone in the back room so I went around to get his attention. The worst customer service ever! I will never rent from this place again and recommend all other customers BEWARE! The manager Gouse Mohidden Shaik is not customer or solution oriented. I got charged twice the daily rate for returning my 3 day rental early. I only rented since my car was in the shop and unsure when work would be complete. I would have secured the same $36 daily rate with my USAA discount for a 1-day rental and then each additional day at $36. Instead he is quoting some master terms of being charged the full non discounted rate, which wasn't even disclosed on any document I signed or initialed. I am disputing the amount of the charge with my credit card. It's no wonder this location looks sketchy without any customers. I should have checked all the terrible Yelp reviews prior to, lesson learned. As a solution I would highly recommend using the Enterprise car rental in Lyndhurst (1 Ridge Road, Lyndhurst, NJ 07071). I have used the 1/2 dozen times and they have never penalized me for an early return. In fact one time I did a 26 hour rental and they just charged for 1 day. I had to rent a car because unfortunately mine was hit parked out side my house, and totaled. When I picked up my rental I told the guy behind the counter my story and that the rental would be covered by insurance. I gave him my card with a mutual agreement to NOT charge me before I brought the car back. Well I guess he didn't understand. The next day my card was charge, need less to say I wasn't very happy. Insurance just wrote me a check not a big deal, but now two weeks later i'm being charged for some random gas fee. We in fact did return the car with a full tank of gas. I really don't understand why this place has two stars . My car broke down and i had a course down the shore which i couldn't cancel since my job paid for it . The gave me a Kia Sportage . And did not charge me extra for the suv . It was very clean with a full tank of gas . I have never rented a car before so i wasn't sure on how this works . He gave me a 10 percent discount . It's 50 a day for the rental and they also let you use you're own insurance : unlike other rentals . They do not charge you a security deposit here . They charge you exactly what you are paying for . My husband and I have been renting cars from this Avis location for the past few months even considering the terrible reviews and lack of customer service. While the attendant has flashed us a quarter of a smile once in a while, there is never a feeling of true client regard. Even so, because of the convenience of the location, we have continued to spend our money at this location. Today however, we had an experience which has not only made certain that we will never rent a car from this location again, but also has made me doubt that I will ever give my hard earned money to Avis ever again. We have rented a compact car (Ford Focus or similar) almost once a week for the past month, and every single time it has been either $37.99 or $39.99 (before taxes). Today when I went to rent the same exact car, it was quoted at $69.99. DOUBLE THE PRICE. For the same exact model. I called the location to ask the associate why the price was so high and he said it was because we have a long weekend coming up. (For Easter). When I asked why they would charge more for a car that entire week he replied "Because it's a week where we make more money". We went to the location regardless because of an urgent need to get to an appointment only to receive the same nonchalant attitude and even worse customer service with an even higher quote for the day of $90.00. Needless to say we walked out and will not be returning. It is really unbelievable to me that a place with such terrible customer service and unreasonable reasons to raise prices can stay in business. This location is awful. We walked in and weren't even greeted with a hello. The blonde girl at the desk was just starring at us and we said we had a reservation she looked it up and took all our information then called her manager to find out where our minivan was. She then proceeded to tell us that they had no minivans but had small SUVs I was like well we have 6 passengers. She then said she would call Lyndhurst and they didn't have one either. Then she said I could call the Wayne location. She said we could wait to speak to her manager and I said well it doesn't make a difference does it you can't make a minivan magically appear. We called on Tuesday to reserve a car for Saturday morning at 8am. Got to the location and the place was dark. When my husband began to call the # on the door, a man jumped out of a van parked out front to notify us the keys were locked inside and the person bringing another set would take at least an hour and a half to bring them. We reserved the car because we were on a tight schedule which Avis crapped all over. We ended up going to Enterprise in Wallington and getting a bigger car for 2 days and it cost less than we were going to pay at Avis for one day. Avis in Rutherford kinda sucks. read more

The other reviews here seem to be pretty accurate. This is a shady place to be avoided. I picked up a car from them at 9:44 AM on a Tuesday and dropped it off at 9:08 AM on Friday. I was charged for 3 days (no complaints here). When I picked up the car the guy asked me to return it before they close (pretty early at 7 pm). I said wi wouldn't be back in town by the time they're closed, to which he responded "no problem, bring it back in the morning". I did and was charged a $10 late fee. I asked why and he rudely asserted he never said to bring it back in the morning. Also experienced the sign in the door saying to call another number as the weren't in the office. Come on people...its a rental place, I have yet to find one where the staff arent a little cold....mainly because they have to deal with people complaining about price and being charged for issues they should have read the small print for before. I booked an SUV 2 weeks ahead and prepaid the rental charges. On the day of rental the guy quietly did all paperwork and gave me a keys to a Cadillac XTS sedan. I reminded him that I dont need an luxury car and only need an SUV and only need and SUV for an airport dropoff. He said he had no other SUV's available and this is the best he could do !! Do NOT go here! If I could give no or negative stars I would. This Avis is also a Budget location - There is an enterprise down the street in Lyndhurst that is wonderful. I arrived here 10 minutes early for my pick up. I filled out some paperwork and was told to have a seat because there were no cars available and they had to get one from the Lyndhurst budget. I was confused as to why i was able to make the reservation if he did not have any cars - he blamed it on me making a "last minute" reservation (it was made 5.5 hours earlier that day.) I asked if I can just go and pick it up myself and was told no because he needed to get the car number from the other location. I waited - he then went outside and pulled a car around and called me out. When I walked out, I was told to take that car to the other location to get my car. I yet again mentioned I had a ride and I will just go myself. He then began to walk inside without giving me so much as an address. (VERY rude!) When I arrived at the Lyndhurst location, the woman was very nice. I got my car and left. I was on my way to a dealership to look at cars since mine had died. I noticed that the driver's side view mirror was shaking so badly that I was unable to see cars behind me. When I called back, I was told that "nobody had every complained about this before" and that no other cars were available for me. I explained what had happened at the Rutherford location and that someone somewhere needed to find me a car because this was now completely out of control. I was told I could wait until the next morning and people were supposed to bring some cars back but unsure of an exact time. After a few things back and forth I was finally told to bring the car back to the Rutherford location (Lyndhurst was closing) for a full refund. I arrived, the same gentleman grabbed the keys off the counter after I placed them down, went outside and took off in the car. Came back in a few minutes later and my boyfriend asked if he noticed the mirror. He told us "It isn't broken, it's just vibrating." To which I followed up that I feel unsafe in the vehicle. He processed some paperwork and handed it to me without saying anything. I asked if I was receiving the full refund mentioned to me and he said yes. I left. As of this morning, the charge was no longer pending, but HAS POSTED TO MY ACCOUNT! NO REFUND! When I called the corporate office, I was told that it was prepaid and it did not matter what happened, I was not eligible for a refund. Of course I fought this and finally ended up with a case number and was told a full refund would be issued in 7-14 business days. I went down the street to the Enterprise in Lyndhurst and was not only helped quickly, I was treated with respect AND received a free upgrade to a nicer vehicle. Do yourself a favor and do not waste your time or money at this location. I will absolutely never use a Budget location again. read more

The fact that I have to even rate this place 1 star is sickening to me. I cannot even put into words how horrible and unprofessional this experience was. Absolutely do NOT go to this place let alone any Avis to rent a car. Horrid customer service and the review posted on 11/8 hits the nail on the head and I got the pleasant experience of the rep running out in the middle of the transaction to use the restroom with the door open and not washing his hands before handing me the keys. No answers, no explanation about anything, didn't even show me the vehicle, and the only thing he was worried about was rushing me out of there because it was close to closing time. When the representative could manage to open his mouth to respond to anything it was in a rude and offensive manner or when he would contact his manager because he could not give me any answers he would speak in an entirely different language right in front of me. However that manager did speak very good English to me which made the experience even shadier. The representative made multiple mistakes not only in the original transaction of taking my billing info at the counter but when I had to extend the contract as well. When the representatives mistakes were caught by either their branch manager or corporate, they didn't take accountability at all and pretty much put me in a very inconvenient position and caused the cost to drive up greatly due to their employee's mistakes. It ended up costing over $2,000 to rent the car and when I challenged many of the fees, rate changes, and toll convenience fees that I was never told about in the first place, I was not only shut down and spoken to like a piece of dirt by their "customer support" team I was also screamed at and threatened by the Operating Manager over the phone. I then returned the car and switched to Enterprise which was a great experience and their customer service was outstanding. The only reason I went to Avis in the first place was because it was the last rental place near me that was still open - huge mistake. This was my first and last time dealing with Avis and anyone thinking of ever using Avis I strongly urge you to reconsider. read more

Emergency reserved a vehicle the night prior, showed up at 8:15 am on Saturday morning 5/7/2016, to a locked door with the lights on, after knocking on the door and trying to call corporate, after 25 mins a man casually showed up and said he was "getting his coffee". Never apologized for the inconvenience. Being on a very tight timeline, this gentleman, took an additional 15 mins to research available cars only to tell us he didn't have any at his facility. During this time, he not only treated us as an inconvenience, he yelled at my and my cousin, defending himself saying he had been here from "8:00-8:15am and then went to get coffee, and it's not his fault that we booked our car last night and that they are now over booked". He was rude, inconsiderate, and should absolutely be terminated from his position. As two women we felt he was especially rude and demeaning. My experience was great.. I had a 10:00am reservation, and I arrived at the location about 9:40am, with one customer was Infront of me.. I was greeted with a Good Morning by a man name Sadhan.. Next, he asked for my license and credit card, and proceded to print out my contract.. After reading it, everything seemed to be in order... Since I came in about 15 mins before my scheduled reservation, he changed the time to 9:45am and to bring the car back June 6th at 10:am in which I originally had a 9:30 return time...Cool.... I signed it and he told me my card will be charged $100 for the hold.. Which was alright with me... Afterwards, we went into a nice little parking lot where I met my car, a 2016, clean, Nissan Sentra.. The car did have pollen all over it, which I didn't like too much... Next, we went around the car looking for any dents, etc. he noted two small dents on the right side of the car in which he put down on the inspection sheet... He got in the car, started it up for me and I was on my way back home... I definitely will be using this Avis location again read more
