I am always renting cars with Hertz due to the high quality of car, reliability of service, multiple convenient locations and competitive prices. However, there were a thousand things wrong with this rental experience in Passaic NJ, on Oct 10 2025. I get to the rental place and I get told that "they're out of cars. sorry" with no regards to the fact that I had a RESERVATION for a car and that they already have a man there waiting for a car to be returned. The lady basically shrugs and implies there's nothing she can do, not even giving me an alternative solution or a phone number to call. I look up a number myself, step outside the establishment and call myself. The employee I spoke with on the phone is somewhat helpful enough to get me a car at a nearby location of Clifton NJ, and with the promise that I would be reimbursed for my car share ride service to the new location. I walk back inside the Passaic NJ establishment and there's a new employee (man) I hadn't met with before. The first employee (lady) asks me if I fixed any problems, and I tell her I am going to the Clifton NJ location to pick up a car. Both employees speak at the same time, saying "wait that's us" and "that car is being returned here". I am visibly and understandbly confused and one of them say "yeah I know it's confusing, but you can get the car from here." While I am waiting for the car to be delivered, a couple walks in to pick up their rental, saying they are 30 min late, and one of the employees has the same message to the couple: "Sorry we are out of cars and you're late so we gave yours away" while the website and contract clearly state that they will hold the reservation for 2h the employee says "that is wrong it's actually 30min and you didn't call us to let us know you were running late." All of this is unacceptable for a service I am paying a significant amount of money for, especially as a member with President's Circle status. This delayed my trip for at least 1h resulting in me missing part of my conference the next day. I am requesting a refund of my money as this was a significant inconvenience of my Friday and the rest of my weekend plans, on top of losing the money I spent on conference and hotel bookings. Additionally, I will not be paying for any processing fees for tolls, as I am trying to get my car registered in the Pennsylvania tolls by mail website and the website is not letting me submit the car plate saying it is registered to another user. This on top of everything else I already submitted is unacceptable and just another way to ensure I send more money your way for bad service. I am not opposed to paying what I owe in tolls, but the unnecessary and excessive service fees are completely and utterly unacceptable. read more

These guys saved me! I was scrambling to find a rental car at the last minute due to my car having some issues. This location had a car available so I showed up 20 minutes later and took a car out. As soon as I walked In 275 main Ave I felt tension. I said Good Morning with a smile and Shelly disregarded it and didn't even smile or made me feel welcome. I attempted to retrieve a vehicle reserved online (Expedia) with my credit card and ny license. She made me feel as if she didn't want to release car to me. She kept giving problems as to me to produce proof of address such as correspondence or anything else besides as if my drivers license and credit card wasn't enough . I understand these are required if using a debt card. I asked why I have to if I'm using a credit card ? She seemed very cranky,or racist with a stone face. She then called for her worker then ask that he stuck around which made me feel uncomfortable as if she felt threatened . Why is it because I'm black. I was terribly upset upon leaving I was d shaking with anger. I came in a very good mood her customer service was so horrible I left shaking with anger and I felt disrespected. I rented a car over labor day from the Hertz in Union, NJ, which called when I was almost there to tell me they ran out of cars. I had booked my hotel and whole trip already. Cheri at the Passaic location went out of her way to help me. She was extremely patient and helpful, and really hooked me up. Highly recommend this location. Imagine the feeling of excitement and happiness as you arrive at the rental car agency to pick up a car you reserved 3 months in advance for your mini-honeymoon. Only to be rudely greeted by an attendant, without asking our name or confirmation number - "WE HAVE NO MORE CARS AVAILABLE!!". But we received a confirmation call from Marquis the day before, he informed us they close at 1pm and to arrive early. We arrived at 12:15pm. My husband and I looked at each other, is this for real? Is this a real Hertz location? Did we accidentally punch in the wrong address? NO! We then proceeded to enter the premises to clarify, when agent/manager Cheri - "YOU CAN'T COME IN HERE, NO MORE THAN 2 PEOPLE!" so we walked back out, one person was being "helped" while 3 other customers were sitting in the back. My husband assumed she meant only 2 people at the desk since there were 3 people in the back already, so I proceeded to enter again. "GET OUT!!!" Again we stepped back outside and decided to call the main HERTZ number, they told us they can't help us and we need to go to another location. Why would a customer need to go to another location if they received a confirmation email and phone of their vehicle!??! Why have a confirmation then??!? Finally we were permitted inside, only to be informed the medium sedans were booked, only thing available is now a 7 passenger minivan! We had no choice but to take a minivan for our HONEYMOON! This is by far the WORST EXPERIENCE we have had anywhere!!!! There was NO service! If you liked to be yelled/ scolded by a rental car agency then this is your place! Another New Jersey Hertz with a lousy Yelp rating where I had no problems at all. Beats the hell out of me. The guy at the counter was fine, OK he was a little gruff, but I was treated fairly. I made a reservation and requested a 1 PM pick up. The location called me the day before to confirm, which I of course confirmed. The day of pick up I called them at 12:30 PM to remind them of the pick up. You can probably guess by now where this is going... During the call it was clear they were unaware of my scheduled pick up, but no sweat, enough time right? At 1:15 I called to check-in on the status of my pick-up. During this call I was told, "maybe the driver is lost." In response, I asked the rep, "don't you offer GPS to your customers? Why wouldn't a driver take one?" At 1:30 I called corporate and complained to a supervisor. At 1:45 I requested a Lyft. At 1:50 Hertz finally arrived to pick me up. 2 hour line for a rental. We are members and the manager conveniently decided to take a day off and this place is a mess. The gold board doesn't have our reservations and we're stuck waiting with no one to talk to. Half the counters are closed and the employees are so well rained (sarcasm here!!!!) Worst customer service ever , Jeremey was the person who greeted me at the door . He told me he had a suv available . The moment he found out that it was threw a insurance claim ,tables turned and it became a hustling game . He then offered me the smallest vehicle they had in the lot . He told me for the amount per day the insurance was covering only covered the smallest vehicle in the lot . He then couldn't find my reservation because it was another system when it comes to insurance claim . I asked to call his manager he couldn't because it was Sunday . When calling my insurance to tell them that he was only trying to rent me the smallest vehicle on the lot all of a sudden he tells me he could rent me a Camry but with a catch, there was a charge of $15 dollars EXTRA a day because he couldn't remove the ez-pass off the windshield. The rental for 20 days and I'm not paying $300 for a ez-pass I wasn't going to use . Waste of time and waste of Uber to this location . Customer service sucked. Shady is all I have to say. I booked this online and when I got there they said they'd never received any payment. I argued with them until they said I'd paid for my insurance only. I paid about 175 dollars for insurance? Ended up paying over 500 for the rental which includes extra fees and a 200 dollar payment I'd get back once the car was returned. Kinda pissed me off these extra charges aren't mentioned anywhere. Not sure why they charge you 200 when they have your card on file anyway! The car was nice and that went well. When I returned it it was dark outside and I think I left my beats headphones in the back seat. Called them immediately the next morning and they said there wasn't anything. Sure. Either they stole my headphones or can't look through a car for shit and are leaving a pair of beats for the next customer. They did manage to promptly complain I didn't fill the car all the way up because apparently they don't realize there's distance in between a gas station and their middle of nowhere location. So yes. I needed a car because mine broke down and encountered some issues with Hertz customer service and then contacted Cherry. Wow. If I could give this place negative stars, I would. I booked a car rental here through CarRentals.com and was excited that I got such a good rate. Unfortunately, everything went downhill from there. I was on vacation and staying in Teaneck, NJ, so it was already difficult finding a way to get to the Hertz in Passaic. (It's about 20 miles away) I wouldn't have complained if I actually got a car. When I arrived (with a child and toddler in tow) the guy behind the counter rudely dismissed me and said he didn't have a car for me and he would have called me if I'd left a number. Umm, excuse me? My confirmation email displayed my phone number. Yes, I said confirmation. He had no car for me? That was it. He did not want to talk to me, explain anything to me. No. All he had to say was that he didn't have a car for me. Doesn't matter that I already had a confirmed reservation. He took the next customer. I found it interesting that he was just trying to sell a car rental to the people in front of me for $110 per day! I guess he just didn't want to honor the deal CarRentals.com made. He was extremely rude and left me high and dry without a rental car or an explanation. I was stuck asking for a ride back to my hotel with both my kids in tow. It was the worst experience I have ever had with any car rental location. And believe me, I've rented cars well over 20 times. Don't even think of going to this rinky dinky place. They really saved us in a pinch when we had already booked a car nearby through a different rental service and found out on arrival that they wouldn't rent us a car of the size we needed at all if we were under 25, even though they had an underage fee regardless and had no information about this online. I truly had a great experience at this car rental place. Of all the car rental places around at the time, this one had the best deal. Even better deal compare to Newark Airport Hertz! Service was in July and it was great. I don't recall the woman's name behind the desk but she's been there for a looong time and she gave me a car upgrade - I think it was the only one available for the car type I made a reservation on but either way it's great. She also gave me a discount after I told her my Hertz online reservation estimate was different. You can also return the car and drop the keys off in their drop off box if you need to do that. FYI - there's a limit on mileage, though my mileage was more than enough. Very nice experience overall. read more

I rented from this "hertz" location. (Not really a hertz location) it just paid money to use their name. Car was fine but the customer service was God awful. I was rushed to handle paperwork. The gentleman who helped me got pissed off at me when I didn't want to take all the other coverages he was trying to SELL me. I am a long time hertz renter, and I know what I want and what I like. Once I returned the car, I was charged for ridiculous additional fees which were not told to me before hand. When I called to find out why, all they said was "that's how we do business here". When I told them I would reach out to hertz corporate, they dared me to and said "they don't have control over us". Horrible, horrible service!! Hertz should revoke the usage of their name. Do yourself a favor and choose from one the 100s other car rental agencies in the area. I've always had positive experiences with Hertz at their NYC and airport locations, but this location just does not cut it. The two people who work here are just plain rude. I had rented a vehicle there and after the initial walkthrough there was a lot of damage on it. All was marked off on the pre-inspection report and when I returned the vehicle they tried to mark off something that was clearly listed on the report as my damage! Completely unacceptable, and when I pointed it out the one older bald gentleman there had the audacity to threaten me! Just overall unprofessional, I would not recommend. Enterprise nearby in Lodi or Elmwood Park are much more pleasurable experiences. My horrible experience is as follows: I do not recommend Hertz to anybody! Why? First of all, the personal that works at this Hertz are rude, uneducated & not well trained. A blonde lady approximately age 40-50 years is a liar, thief & takes advantage of you. A second employee at the office is a bald male approximately 50-60 years of age. When my family & I came into the office he was screaming to other clients that were next to us. He is probably worse than the blonde lady! I called & made a reservation for a car rental with enough time before hand. They offered us a specific car & when we came into the office they did not have the car. Then when we were going to pay for the car rental they told us we had to pay more. The blonde lady brought up so many arguments to add more fees to our car rental. For example, she told us they do not do rentals for 1 day & wanted to force us to rent the car for 3 days. Car insurance was another problem, she charged us a ridiculous amount for only 1 day rental. We explained to her that everything she was doing was an awful service. She started to raise her voice at us & finished by screaming at us. She told us we could go with her supervisor or we could sue the company that she didn't care what we would do after. This is the reason why we have written a review. We recommend to everybody that if they have had the same experience, they should also write a review so the company works on this issue. This way they could improve their customer service. We had such a positive experience with Sherry at this location. My fiance and I had a car reserved at the Hertz in Jersey City but arrived 20 minutes late and found the location closed. The Passaic Hertz was the only one in the area open at that time on Saturday, and Sherry went above and beyond to help us explore our options, reserve a car, and save money in doing so. My card was declined at the register, and the man at the desk insisted it was because I didnt have the funds, when in fact American Express declined the purchase for fraud protection. He told me he cannot swipe the card again cause It is "policy" although I begged him since my company is paying for this and I just flew 5000 miles from Hawaii to NY on Christmas Day. He for some reason didnt believe I lived in Hawaii, and the manager asked for proof that I work for Starbucks. How dare he. I had to tell two grown men to not be rude to me, we can figure out the card without them questioning the legitimacy of my employment or state. I had to give him my personal employee number which was absurd. I am a manager as well and this was not okay. I showed them the email from AMEX saying it declined a purchase and if it was me, press here and retry the transaction. It was telling me to SWIPE AGAIN. They told me to go to Enterprise down the street and I said no. Starbucks is giving me a discount for coming to Hertz. He finally swiped again, and low and behold, it went through. Let me tell you, policies are policies. But you make exceptions for special cases. I wonder how many people they have turned away for this ridiculous policy. I wonder how they have never heard of fraud protection and it may be the reason cards are declined, not because of funds. Best part was when it went through, what is the company on the reservation? Don't let some of these negative reviews dissuade you from renting from this Hertz location. I've rented from this location multiple times and have never had an issue at all. Harvey and Cheri have always been pleasant and have never come off rude. Prices and always been great and they've never surprised me with any hidden costs or pushed anything on me. read more

I love this Hertz! I was in there three times in the last month and a half and Sherry and Harvey were my service advisers. I was worried that it was going to take for ever to get out of there and I was on a time crunch. They were pleasant (funny even), considerate and they got me out of there in record time. The next time I came back they remembered me and Harvey even remembered my name! I was dealing with a rental due to a recall of my automobile and Sherry was calm and patient - they both made certain I left from there unstressed.
