The car they rented me didn't have working AC, and it was a pretty hot weekend. But they have so few cars there that it didn't seem worth going back and asking for another.

Then I found the Avis/Budget center in Westfield. Cindy picked up my call. She was friendly and helpful. They didn't have the type of vehicle we needed onsite, but she went out of her way to secure one at another location, then drove there to pick it up, herself. We were able to pick up the car that evening. When we arrived, Dom was outside cleaning the vehicle. It was pristine! The pick-up and drop-off processes were simple and quick, and they asked me how our vacation was when we returned the vehicle. This is a hidden gem. Dom and Cindy saved our trip. The manager offered to send his guys to pick up the van. I'm not sure why this wasn't taken care of before we got there as there were 4 guys working when we arrived. He kindly offered to wave mileage for us as an apology. We went back home to wait for the drop off. It took them an hour to bring us a different car. There was no phone calls letting us know about the delay. This should have been a 20 min wait. We were standing with all of our luggage in our driveway for an extra 40 mins. There is a lot a mom can do with an extra 40 mins. You feel?? Our trip was delayed an extra hour and a half. I woke up 4 teens to wait an hour and a half. Not the best way to start a road trip. Their review might have been a bit grumpier. When I told the manager I planned to post this on social media he accused me of threatening him. At pickup, Bryan, the assistant manager, agreed to extend it another week and specifically confirmed the rate would remain the same because of our company code. We were also told there would be no fee for adding an additional driver. When my wife later called to confirm the extension, Kate, the branch manager, told her the original rate was a "system error" and the second week would be approximately $500. She also said Bryan was off, yet when I called about five minutes later, Bryan answered the phone and confirmed what he had originally agreed to. After speaking with District Manager Eric, we believed everything had been resolved. Unfortunately, after returning the vehicle, I reviewed the charges and found we had been billed an additional-driver fee despite being told it was free. I also added Enterprise insurance only for the second week after bringing the vehicle back to the branch, yet we were charged for insurance for both weeks. My wife contacted Enterprise first and was told the charges would be corrected and someone would reach out. No one did. I then made multiple calls myself and was repeatedly promised callbacks that never came. Each time, it seemed there was another reason why the issue couldn't be resolved. After multiple conversations, conflicting information, and no follow-through, I finally told Kate I would dispute the incorrect charges with American Express. Her response was essentially, "okay." Very disappointing way to handle what should have been a simple billing correction. We've rented from Enterprise many times, but after this experience, we will not rent from the Scotch Plains location again.

One staff reluctantly called their Linden location and I had to go there myself. The Westfield staff refused to have the truck brought there. Jason in Linden was very helpful when I got there although the truck wreaked of cigarette smoke, the windshield was filthy and the headlights were dim to the point of being unsafe. Rent anywhere but here! The staff in Westfield could not have been more uncaring or less helpful.

My reward for staying inside my condo during a rainstorm on September 18th was wire damage under the hood. The outside claim company is called PurCo, and charged me for repairs to the wires, 10-day loss of rent while repaired, admin costs, and diagnostic cost totaling $6,758. I asked PurCo if cars rented by Avis already have their own insurance to cover these repairs. No answer. I asked if the repairs have been paid already. No answer. I asked if these were the actual cost of repairs. No answer. I was not in the car when wires were damaged. I did not take the various insurance costs that Avis offered, because it would have been an extra $53/day! I was not negligent with this car, but I am expected to pay $6,758 for damage to wires during a rain storm, when I was not in the car. PurCo represents many car rental companies for over 30 years. The vehicle had a bad tire. The representative had it fixed by a shop next-door but we got to our destination the tire was going flat again. The DVD player in the vehicle also did not work. I would not suggest renting from this establishment they are the ghetto in the suburbs.
