Axis PT is a gem. I was looking for a good place to work out for years after moving to Palo Alto, but nothing was a good fit. Then I found Axis and I haven't missed a week since because I love it so much. Many of the trainers and clients have been there for years, which I think speaks to the quality of the community they've built. Everyone I interact with is super friendly and supportive. There is a lot of really great equipment, which allows for varied and interesting workouts. Its fun to watch the trainers plan the next equipment they're going to get - its like new toys for them and the enthusiasm is contagious. You work out with a dedicated personal trainer, and from what I can tell all the trainers are super dedicated to helping their clients get great fitness results. It flat out works! My trainer is Stacey Burnett, a very fit , knowledgeable and dedicated trainer. She sets a good example and is an inspiration for developing good muscle tone and staying slender. I've lost 9 lbs in two weeks and I'm still going strong. Stacey is against the use of Nautilus type machines which I thought was a bit extreme, but her weight and body workouts without machines are developing muscles that the machines just missed. Axis costs more than just joining 24 Hour Fitness, but the results are way better for me. Stacey doesn't upsell. I was willing to pay for 1 hour sessions and she suggested trying half hour sessions and seeing how it goes. A half hour session is $45 and if it goes over a few minutes they don't bill you extra. If you are trying to keep costs down you could go perhaps four times a month and still get a lot of benefit. Fitness is a passion for Stacey B and it's infectuous. She is college educated, smart and keeps up with the latest in physio and nutritional research. She knows the difference between urban folklore and hard science and uses her knowledge to craft an effective program for you. She does not use a cookie cutter approach where a trainer just uses your age and weight then looks up a stock program on a computer. She pays attention to your goals, habits, metabolic type, and physical abilities. The facility is pleasant and the staff very gracious and friendly. They even keep a plate of fresh fruit out for clients. Bathrooms are clean and have complimentary shaving gear, shampoo, spray deodorant, combs, lotions, toothbrushes, clean towels, a sauna, keyed lockers, etc. Why did I wait so long? Had I joined Axis a year ago I could have been in shape a lot sooner. With no contracts (pay by the session) you have nothing to lose to try it out. I started going to Axis to get in shape before my wedding. It was such a great investment! I loved working with Ty, the best trainer ever! She not only helped me lose weight and tone up , but also specifically focused on helping me with my scoliosis. I started searching for a personal trainer when the gym I currently go to totally dropped the ball in getting me set up with one of their trainers. So, I figured hey, if they don't want my money I'll go find somewhere else to spend it! Anyhow...I started searching for places and stumbled across AXIS and am sure glad I did. First of all what a great concept...to have a facility that just focuses on personal training. You don't have to worry about regular gym go-ers getting in your way during your training! I love it. The facility is well equipped, clean and is filled highly qualified trainers. Their website it full of great information and even better all of their trainers have detailed profiles, so you can see who is accepting new clients, what their certifications are, what they specialize in and client testimonials. Knowing that you can look through all their profiles and pick one that you feel would be best for you is a nice option. I put my interest in through there website and was contacted the same day. Perhaps the past review just caught them on a bad day, but my experience was a good one. read more

my wife and i have been at Axis for about 1.5 years now, my trainer is Katie, and she is awesome. She keep us on our toes and do different exercise every time, session with her never gets boring. I tried the Menlo Park location for about a month, but it was a logistics mess. Overview of Logistics-- First, I called to schedule an appt with a specific trainer on the website. The person who answered the phone had no access to the calendar, so couldn't check availability and said the "office manager" would call me back the next day. 24 hours later, I get a call from the office manager who asks me the same questions the other person asked, and then says that she'll have to "check the trainer's schedule" to let me know. Finally, 2-3 days later I get an e-mail from the trainer and we confirm a time. Come on, people. We're in Silicon Valley. If you have trainers working for you, you should have a calendar system so that you can see when they are/aren't available and that calendar should be available immediately---none of this back and forth, days to schedule stuff. Needless to say, I show up, and no one is there to show me anything. The trainer finally comes over right when the appointment starts, and gives me a brief tour of the facilities, but the office manager was nowhere to be seen. No one explains how/when billing will occur or any of the basics. Overview of Facilities-- They don't sell water bottles, and the only water they have are these teeny, tiny paper cups. So, if you forget your water bottle, you're out of luck. Showers were clean, equipment was clean, clientele ranged in age from young kids (like 10) to older (like 70-80). Everyone was nice. I stuck with it for a month, but have found a better place that has the business side together and is more organized. I think this place is very trainer specific, and the trainers I had were "okay," but because the place was so poorly run, I didn't stick around to find the prefect training fit. read more

Angus Lee has been my trainer, twice weekly, at Axis for a year and a half. He is responsible for huge changes in my strength and fitness over the last 18 months. When I started with Angus I was recovering from a hip flexor strain caused by muscle weakness / overuse. Angus was great about first focusing on the fundamentals - mobility, balance, core. This created a great foundation to eventually increase the difficulty and intensity of my workouts. Angus now plans very rigorous, high intensity workouts for me, but always makes sure my form and fundamentals are solid during every drill. I am 27 and am stronger and more flexible now than I have ever been in my adult life. Angus also has a great personality and is genuinely fun to spend an hour with twice a week. I travel a lot for work and he has been flexible about re-scheduling our sessions when necessary. He also has good taste in music! I highly recommend Angus if you are looking for an attentive, fun, thoughtful personal trainer to challenge you and make a real difference in your strength and fitness. I've been working out at AXIS for a year now, and am so glad that I went the route of getting a personal trainer to meet my fitness goals. (I've definitely seen the results!) The facility is terrific. Machines and equipment are all in tip-top condition (still have yet to see a single thing that's broken). The women's locker room is phenomenal; it's fully stocked with shampoo, mouth wash, toothpaste, hair ties, and any other personal care item you can think of under the sun. It also includes a sauna and several spotless showers. AXIS also keeps a fully stocked fridge of ice-cold bottled water and fresh fruit, which are complimentary for clients. But enough about the facilities: on to the main draw, the trainers! These people are on top of their game. They go out of their way to customize a workout routine to meet your fitness goals and motivate you to do your best in a positive way (not in the scary drill sergeant way). I also have been impressed by their vast knowledge of how the different muscle groups in the body interrelate. I always have a large amount of tension in my neck and shoulders, and whenever it gets uncomfortable for me when I'm doing certain exercises, my trainer, Stacey, suggests adjustments to ease the tension and can explain why they help ease the pain. Way cool! As a final shoutout to Stacey, I definitely appreciate her extra effort in making sure I stay on track outside of our sessions - she's briefed me on changing my eating habits to further help me along with my fitness goals and has given me a workout routine to do as "homework" between sessions. Finally, a comment about their customer service: I've been very pleased with their responsiveness to inquiries, concerns, etc. The manager, Allison, always responds in a timely manner and takes client comments very seriously. I have trained w Jeremy for rehabbing my and was really impressed that even within a short 45 min training session he took time to stretch me before and after the session. Even more surprising was that he did myofascial release on me which made a big difference because I tend to strain my hamstrings when I work out but not w Jeremy. I also did a power plate work out w Allison which I loved! Being a fan of Dr mercola I was really curious to experience this machine and it felt amazing and gave me a work out at the same time. I am amazed that the other reviewers said they had problems contacting Axis online or by phone. I have been a client for many years and only have positive things to say, as do the number of people that I have referred to them. The people at Axis, the front desk, the trainers, etc. are so friendly and helpful. I have never had a problem. I am in my 60s and not in the least athletic and never have I felt uncomfortable there. As far as gyms go, Axis is well-equipped, spacious, clean, and the staff are all energetic and friendly. But the above is not the reason to pick Axis as your gym; you go there for the trainers! I came to Axis with two permanent injuries -- a torn ACL in my knee and a slipped disc in my lower back. I went into my workouts expecting little to no improvement, that I would be forced to live with a weak knee and bad back for the rest of my life. But my trainer, Stacey Burnett, proved me wrong. She was not only highly knowledgeable, but she took a vested interest in my well-being and improvement. She puts a lot of time outside the gym as well, carefully planning out my workouts, diet, and what she calls "homework". --Often times, she gave me the same or better advice than my doctors and physical therapists, which would usually result in preempting what became unnecessary visits to the doctor. --While going through our workouts, she takes care making sure that I do every exercise exactly right so that I don't injure myself or exacerbate my knee or back. --Her rapport with her clients, I've noticed, is similar to with me as well, using humor and positive reinforcement to push me forward, onward, and to build momentum. --Her care for her clients extends to availability over the phone and e-mail as well, which has proven to be a boon for me several times. Stacey's been my trainer for about year now and hiring her was probably the best investment I've ever made. Because she pushes me to work hard, I find myself having more energy, a clearer mind, and a healthier life in general. And as for my knee, she helped me strengthen it to the point where I feel no pain and it is even better supported than it was before my injury. And though my back continues to irk me, our workouts have reduced the chronic pain by at least half, increased my mobility significantly, and trained me to do the right things for its improvement when I'm at home. read more

I love that the gym is all personal training, no membership dues except for your training sessions. It really is never too crowded and the amenities in the locker rooms are excellent (keyed lockers, shampoo, conditioner, razors, toothbrushes, mouthwash!). They have an online account management system that rocks, shows your upcoming appointments, allows for easy billing, etc. The personal trainers all seem great. I have Stacey and I just love her. She is too cute for words, extremely personable, and remembers details of what you last talked about. She also kicks my butt in just 30 minutes, so efficient! read more

I came to the Axis MV location in 08 and was not disappointed. My trainer was Bart. I had some back problems and he showed me a range of exercises that vastly helped. Every workout kicked my butt. More importantly, I was able to take the lessons I learned from Axis and carry them into my own training. At about $80-90/session, Axis isn't cheap, but if you are serious, the money will be well, well spent. read more

Personal problem: computeritis (hunched over all day, crooked neck...) I have improved a lot since starting to work out with Doug almost 2yrs ago. I have changed posture, feel taller, have no back/neck/shoulder pain anymore. As a side benefit I am also stronger and leaner (some :-) ). Even though by now I know all the machines and all the basic exercises I still benefit a lot by having Doug constantly watch over me and monitor my moves. By myself I tend to twist a little, lean a little, use more my right arm than my left etc. Friends and family who had not seen me for a while noticed my changes at a recent wedding. I've worked out with Doug for about 9 months. Within my first appointment he was able to identify several interrelated problems and come up with a plan to rehabilitate me. I've seen many physical therapists for several problems, but they have treated each area separately. Doug is very knowledgeable about bio-mechanics has been able to strengthen me here, stretch me there to get my body working right again, as a whole. He very quickly understood how many years of too little stretching, injuries, and bad posture had torqued my body and even made one foot very flat. When I show up for my workout with a new pain, he can immediately know where to stretch to make it go away. I've even been able to wear high-heals again! I have been an Axis client for over five years - first at Mountain View and the last two years in Menlo Park. A friend originally recommended them. I have always been delighted with both the experience and the results. All of the staff are extremely pleasant and try to accommodate clients. I am 75 years old and, due to my Axis trainer, my body and balance are in excellent condition. It has to be Axis as I am not a natural athlete. Kudos for Axis and my trainer there, Byron Ng. Byron has extensive knowledge of physical training, including a Bachelor Science in Kinesiology and certified through NSCA. He is highly motivating and focused every minute on our workout (which he tailors for me and I see him doing the same for each client). He is energetic, keeps me moving through the program, and not a minute wasted. Byron is also personable and builds fun into the workout. I have been going to Axis for a couple of years. While I quickly write reviews when I am unhappy with a business, I rarely write ones when all is well. Axis is expensive, especially for someone who hates exercise, but it is the only fitness training I have been able to stick with for an extended period of time. Sometimes I even like it. My trainer, Jeremy, pushes me but respects my limitations, and is very good about scheduling my twice a week appointments and flexible when necessary. He is educated and experienced and does a great job. The facility is clean, with lots of equipment to vary the workouts. As with other reviewers, initially I had to work a little too hard to schedule the first appointment but otherwise Axis has handled my business very efficiently. Jermey Fernandez is my trainer, twice weekly for 45 min at Axis. I don't tend to be very motivated when it comes to exercise, but I always look forward to working out with Jeremy. He varies the workout, makes it fun, and I have seen real changes to my body, flexibility and balance. I am 52, with low back issues, and Jeremy seems very knowledgeable about what to do to help my back - it has improved a lot in the two months I have been working out with him. This has literally been a life changing experience and worth every dollar. Because of my erratic schedule, I've worked with many of the trainers here. It's an efficient workout in 30 minutes, and I've been happy with all the trainers that pushed and prodded me. Ugh. This is more of a rehab center for the elderly than a gym. No one here really breaks a sweat and all the trainers are paralyzed with fear that someone will be injured (and if you specialize in elder care, I guess that makes sense) However, if you are an athlete of any kind, this is absolutely NOT the place for you. They specialize in "functional training" (getting out of bed in the morning). If you are a triathlete, they will tell you to stop. In addition, the place is just not very clean and the trainers do not place enough fresh towels on surfaces. The owner, Scott, is positively sycophantic towards his very rich clients (and won't train any others). When I trained there, I attempted to avoid him because he is so obviously insincere (I am not one of the local tycoons). None of the trainers ever smile and they are really not at all friendly (can't really blame them...they are not really treated very well). One of my good friends is a long-standing client, and she is never treated very well either. She stays because she likes her trainer, but I would not have tolerated their rude behavior for the money they charge. They lean over backwards to bring in new clients, but do nothing to create long-standing ones. I have moved to another gym that is very friendly, clean and filled with athletes of all ages.
