I ordered a full truck load of gravel to be delivered to my jobs items. It was scheduled for 7 to 9 am. Have workers waiting there and it shows up at 12 30. All I did was call this morning to get some basic inventory on rock selections and I wound up with a load of knowledge and expertise in my opinion in a short amount of time with much cordial professional courteous help ! I can tell she must like what she does, because it shows in her work performance ! I wish everyone was so helpful and wanting to do their best to help others in general, it's a rare find. I've purchased thousands of dollars of materials from Axner, but the last purchase may have lost me as a customer. I had 9 yards of manure delivered, but got a mixture of manure and gravel! They blamed their supplier, but I cannot believe they actually sold this product. I couldn't very well shovel it back into the truck after they dumped it. When I spoke to the manager, they offered me a tiny discount on a future purchase. Totally unacceptable! If you can't go to the yard and verify the product you are purchasing, I would steer clear. read more

My wife and I have extremely negative experiences here from racist employees who ridicule her for her foreign accent. They are extremely rude toward her because of her Asian accent. I would think twice about patronizing a business that encourages this type of behavior towards customers. read more

Five years ago we had Axner gravel our private road and driveway. This spring the heavy rains washed much of our road away, so we contacted Axner and asked if they would come up and give us an estimate for new work. They said they would call back, but after ten days, we didn't hear from them, so we contacted them again and finally they sent someone up. He was nice and said he would send us an estimate for the work. We waited for a week and still no estimate. We continued to wait and after almost two weeks called them again but their staff couldn't seem to find a reference to your estimate so we gave up. We will definitely avoid Axner and will tell our neighbors about the lack of response. We live in Shingletown, about 40 miles from Redding, where they are located, but that shouldn't be an excuse for their poor response. read more

Axner goes above and beyond. Example: I bought simple garden mulch and I started whining about how I needed to carry it down some steps in my yard. And they packed the mulch in a bunch of small bags--they insisted ("we're not that busy right now" and it's only 5,000 degrees outside not 6,000). It saved my back, the excess is easy to store, and I reuse the bags when I need more stuff from them. I needed some rough cut lumber, called them: Nope, not their thing but that front desk -- it's like NASA control genius level information and organization: I asked what she would do & got some quick, great, local business (yessssss!!) suggestions. Now they can't get rid of me. I call them if the dog is sick, travel recommendations, easy prep recipes... kidding. Everything bulk landscape material, they're my go to. read more

Subject: Towable Concrete Mixer To Axner Management, I am writing to express some valid concerns and dissatisfaction with several members of your staff. I came to your sales/retail office to rent a larger Tow Mixer at around 9 AM on March 25, 2021. Dave was at the desk. He told me that there was a unit that would be ready around 9:30 AM and probably no later than 9:45 AM. I decided to wait for it. My helper and I waited until after 10 AM and asked if it had been returned yet. We were told that it had not. Since it was getting late, I asked Dave to cancel my transaction and we decided to go to another rental yard. Dave issued me a credit for the rental, and we drove off. We drove about a quarter mile and we saw an Axner mixer going towards your yard. We assumed it was the unit that we'd been waiting for. So, we drove back to your yard. We went to Dave and asked him if it was back. He informed us that the 1-3/4 yard unit was actually returned 45 minutes earlier, but he didn't follow up on the radio call from the concrete person. Essentially, we had needlessly burned over an hour waiting for the unit that was already in the yard. Dave admitted his mistake and gave us each a cap. Dave did not tell us that it was only a 2 hour time window to return it. I asked him if there was a 4 hour minimum on renting it. He implied that getting it returned within 4 hours would not reduce my rental costs. He also said nothing about it being reserved to anyone in 2 hours. We left with the cart at 10:50 AM with 1-1/2 yards of concrete in the towable mixer. We started wheel barrelling at our job on Olney Park Drive at approximately 11:30AM. The pour site was about 50 yards from the mixer location. As we emptied it we had discovered that there was hardened concrete bonded to the fins of the drum. We assumed it was our concrete that had not released despite running it with added water continuously for 2 hrs. We had to stop working on finishing the concrete and focus on getting the concrete to separate from the drum of the mixer. Both of us spent over 2 additional hours knocking off extremely hardened concrete fragments off the inside of the drum. We were concerned that it was the newly mixed concrete that had prematurely hardened and adhered to the fins. We chipped off almost all the concrete and discovered that it was left over extremely hardened concrete that was left in the drum by previous users. Then, at approximately 4PM, Rusty from your company arrived at our jobsite. I waved him down. We showed him what we found in the mixer and explained to him that we were concerned over the condition of his mixer and didn't want it damaged by leaving the concrete in the drum. We showed him the fragments that we had knocked out of it. He agreed that the mixer was not cleaned out properly prior to our rental and it was not our responsibility. We explained to him that we had to spend over 2 hours cleaning the unit and had to abandon our job to rescue his mixer. We also explained to him that we had to put fuel in it to keep it turning to prevent concrete from curing inside the drum. We were acting in good faith to prevent any damage to his unit. We also explained to Rusty that we had bad phone service and we had been frantically working to chip off concrete, which hindered us from receiving phone calls from his office. Rusty said that we should have just left the cart drum as it was and tell the yardman that it was from previous use. I replied that I had been accused of improper cleaning in the past and wanted to avoid being wrongfully charged for damages. He assured us that we'd not be charged for time am overage or for cleaning. I gave him my business card and he was very cordial. We assured him that we were returning it promptly. My partner Matt returned the mixer cart at around 4:20. He immediately was confronted and scolded for returning it late. The yard person also attempted to claim that the drum wasn't properly cleaned by radio. Matt wasn't even allowed to explain the circumstances and was treated with complete apathy and disrespect. Rusty apparently did defend our diligence in cleaning up the unit well beyond reasonable standards, so there were no cleanup fees charged. Both Matt and I had to climb inside the drum and chip off the chunks of old extremely hardened concrete residue from your unit. We had bruises and skinned knuckles to show for our efforts to be honorable and respectful of your equipment. It was a kick in the teeth to have your staff treat him like a deadbeat. Additionally, I was charged an egregiously high $309 time overage fee against my credit card. The desk person even gloated that we were lucky that we didn't get hit with a higher fee. I called and spoke with Anthony on this matter this morning. He would not acknowledge or listen to what Rusty had pledged to us regarding waiving the time overage fees. He was only focused on the verbiage in the rental contract and would not listen. read more

This place is sucks .costumers service less than I expected .I don't live in the area so I wasn't really familiar with all of the landscaping companies that were around so my brother-in-law told me about this place so we did we all went inside to take look at the rocks that they had in the jar. so we can make a better decision instead of walking and walking all over the place .i went to buy the soda .then the second time I went to get another drink for my wife the guy totally ignored me. And told me to hold on with a really bad attitude .so I left I took my business somewhere else I spent about $400 which might not be a lot for some people but I'm sure I will not be going back there.I took my business to "Lassen landscape Materials "because their customer service was excellent better price Too. read more

My father lost his home in a fire and needed to have the debris surveyed, abated and removed in a safe and legal manner. We contacted Kevin Barber at Axner and he provided a reasonable price but then was hit with uncontrollable circumstances such as unknown asbestos, snow and schedule issues. Kevin got the asbestos removed and was able to schedule the work as soon as the site was accessible. Axner also gave my father a discount on the price to help with his finances after the fire. Axner built our road about twenty five years ago. We have had them maintain it, i.e. spread road base on it ever since. This year we called for more road base. They arrived as planned, but the truck driver refused to spread it because of a few small tree branches he thought might scratch his truck. We were surprised and dismayed, and completely at a loss. We are both in our seventies, and far too old to spread a tandem load of road base ourselves. We had to return it. We asked for a refund and got less than half of our money back. Axner kept $300 of our scarce social security money because their dump truck driver was scared of scratching his truck! I hope he eats well tonight! read more

Yesterday I brought a koi pond pump into Axner thinking it was worn out because it had shut off during the night. I was thinking I would have to replace it with a $450 new one. Ed asked how old the pump was and suggested it might be covered by warranty but I hadn't brought a receipt so he pulled one off the shelf to replace it. Then in a stroke of genius he said wait a minute and turned it upside down to check the intake and spotted a rock that had gotten lodged in the impeller! He took a pair of pliers and removed the rock, tested the pump and IT WORKED! So THANK YOU Ed!! No need to spend money on a new one. read more

Very disappointing experience with the owner of Axner this morning. I'm working on getting our final information on a rental property to our CPA and I know we made a significant purchase with them 11 months ago but I don't have a receipt for it. I call to get VERY BASIC information that they should be able to happily and easily provide to any customer but other then a verbal amount and date, the owner flat refuses to send me even an e mail with the basic info on it for our records. Saying she wasn't comfortable doing that. I reiterated she didn't need to go into her attic and search for the invoice - just an e mail with the information I already was given would suffice. Flat refused. It was beyond crazy. The polar opposite of customer service and wanting repeat business. Prior to this experience, we always liked axner and used them on a few different properties but moving forward it will be Loucks Landscaping materials for us! Also of note, the owner actually hung up on me and I was not being the slightest bit rude. Axner is clearly NOT what it use to be. When the owner - not just an employee treats a customer like this....Hard Pass. read more

They know their product, and can answer any questions on the spot . We've been a customer for over 3 years, and will be for years to come. I'm a Realtor, and will also refer them to my clients. I have done business with Axner for many years and have spent thousands and thousands of dollars with them. I recently had a very dissatisfying experience with them. I rented a u cart concrete trailer with a yard and 3/4 in it. It very clearly had a large amount of hard concrete already in it when I rented it but I didn't complain. It was a very hot day and I hurried to return it as I did not have good water pressure at the job site and there was some concrete I couldn't wash out without better pressure. They will also readily charge you extra if you are not back in two hours. I brought a digging bar with me in order to help clean out any extra concrete as needed. There was only a small amount in there beyond what was originally hard and in there in the first place. At first the man in the office (Casey) told me he was charging 300 and some dollars for the clean out. When I objected he called on the radio to the guy cleaning it out who advised he charge $76 and change. I agreed to this charge. I had ordered a second load and paid for it but decided not to take it. I was told I would get a refund and he even pointed out where he had given me a credit. A week later I reviewed my credit card statement and saw that in fact there was no credit. When I called for an explanation they were all condescending and said I should have known that they were going to charge me the obscene $300 plus charge for the clean out. Had they been honest with me I never would have left and I would've done what little cleaning it needed myself. It also would've been hard for them to justify charging me for the hard concrete that was already in there when I rented it in the first place. if you are going to do business with these guys make sure you examine the trailer very closely and take any pictures and document everything because otherwise they will certainly take advantage of you! Even the supervisor Tony was unhelpful and didn't seem to mind ending a relationship that I've had with them for many years. Very disappointing. read more

I went in to get some info on flagstones for a patio. the facility is lovely, lots to see, lots of examples of their work. the man at the counter greeted me perkily enough, but when I said I was wanting info and rough estimates, he visibly deflated. His answers were brusque. He did not volunteer any info to help me navigate the mystery of pricing flagstone for my patio. when he got around to a number, I said that was a bit more than I anticipated, he just stared at me, didn't offer any suggestions, didn't offer any alternatives. everyone has a bad day, and I might give them another chance, but I was not impressed with the service. at all. I left feeling like I was a bothersome nuisance in his day. read more

I just walked into this place hoping to get a little bit information for a project that I'm I working on and I need some firebrick, as well as bunch of other material. It was obvious as soon as I walked in that I was interrupting someone today. The guy at the counter was as UNhelpful as you could possibly get. I just had a few questions about what options they have in firebricks. I was hoping he would direct me to info about the content of the brick, and also perhaps some different size choices. I'm not upset that they didn't have any other options, but he could have taken some iota of interest in trying to help me. Talk about a bad attitude! This guy should be should be out back stocking inventory! (Based on a review below I imagine I'm not the first person to get this kind of "help.") Sorry for interrupting your day sir; I will gladly take my business elsewhere. Furthermore as a local business person, I often make referrals to the 600+ In my network, as they are always looking good service providers for their own clients. I always find Axner's Staff very knowledgeable and friendly. The last time I was in there to buy sand two staff guys were helping my fill my buckets and tubs and had me laughing the whole time, they had a great sense of humor and seemed very happy to be there. A few years ago I went in to get advise on my lawn. With there suggested products I turned a very weed infested lawn into a beautiful green weed free lawn. You are all a so awesome!! We have spent thousands of dollars on material here, including a stone fire pit kit, 40 yards of 3/4" rock, 10 yards of pea gravel, 20 yards of compost, 5 yards of sand, etc. We usually get the delivery, and the truck drivers are incredibly nice. They also have an impressive selection of landscaping materials in stock so you can window shop before making selections. They don't get five stars for one main reason: cost. I feel like I deserve some kind of kick back - anything - considering that I've spent about $10k there. We're a private residence, not a business or a contractor. Even just throwing in free delivery on orders over $Xk (they can name the price!) would be cool. But nope. Expect to pay full price every time and definitely don't expect them to remember your previous business there unless you're representing a big company. read more

If you want a great job, choose the busy company! I am out of the country and this job is DONE without my needing to be there. Jon lined me up with a tree removal expert and the men on site accommodated a neighbor's request to recieve the removed fill material and tidied everything up. I felt assured throughout the process that he had my best interests in mind. A couple of minor revisions to the quote based on site inspection and review of permit requirements still brought the job in under other quotes.
