My only regret is that I don't live closer to this wonderful place. If I did, I would aim to try every dish on the menu! My husband and I shared a huge 6-layer dish consisting of chicken, chickpeas, slivered almonds, yogurt, pita chips, and rice. There was nearly nothing left to bring home. Our companions ordered BBQ chicken and lamb chops and they were equally delicious. They were out of sahlab, which was a bummer, and they only had baklava for dessert on the day we were there but the rest of the food was so good that I am willing to overlook it! My new go to spot in Bay Ridge, I grew up in Brooklyn and although there are many iconic Shawarma spots, something about the vibe the food that reminds me of my visits to Syria. Ayat is the best. My girlfriend and I dine or order food from there minimum 2X times a month. Favorite dishes of ours include their apps of Zahir, Muhammarah, and Labneh. The Chicken and Mix Shawarma platters are our favorite mains and they are out of this world good. Falafel is also awesome as well. I have eaten here a few times , I left them a 5 star review previously. The food was good the service has always been indifferent. I have put up with in the pay because I liked the food. But each time I have eaten there is has gotten worse and worse. I get it having had 20+ years so in the restaurant industry but when you eat someplace 5 times and every time the service is truly indifferent and in the case tonight downright rude. It's not just an employee having a bad day but a culture of really not caring about the customers. This place is busy and the food is good. But I will not spend my money someplace that consistently treats my wife and I poorly. My wife much smarter that I, stopped after the 2nd bad experience. I tend to be more forgiving about things, but after today I do not think I will try them again. I got the chicken Kebob. I tried to assemble a keto friendly platter with no rice or bread. They generously served me extra tabouleh and a bread lol. I also had the fried cauliflowe. It was served with a sweet drizzle. Tastes like tahini and pomegranate. Everything was delicious and served in a cute platter. The service was on point. This may sound mean but I have no idea how this place has good reviews. I gave this place 3 tries and every single time the food was so disgusting and inedible that I had to throw it out and could not finish it. Once it was late at night, so I assumed maybe it was because it was leftover food (still unacceptable and gross)? But the other times it was also not good. The rice was extremely bland and almost mushy. The chicken shawarma was literally flavorless, no spices and a very displeasing texture too. And the hummus was too dense, I could not even eat it without getting nauseous. I am not the only one who felt this way either, my family agreed, and my sister who usually LOVES meat shawarma found theirs to be nasty, and she was actually planning on calling the next day to ask for a refund because they also overcharged her. Oh and another thing, the prices are on the expensive side in my opinion, especially for the bland taste they serve. I honestly much prefer other middle eastern food places in the area and am VERY disappointed because I truly wanted to like this place so bad. We visited Ayat recently and immediately noted the welcoming neighborhood vibe. Even though we ate off peak, the restaurant had a steady stream of dine-in and take-away customers. There is no table service at Ayat. You order/ pay at the cash register and plates are delivered when ready. While this place pays attention to aesthetics, e.g. fancy wood menus, beautifully garnished dishes, delightful Middle Eastern music, I wasn't bowled over by the flavors of food we ordered. The kefta, which as so much potential, was flat and the mixed shawarma didn't excite. I looked up my favorite Mediterranean recipe to see if I could identify what was missing. Did the food need more onion, garlic, cilantro, ginger, or perhaps a pinch of ras el hanout? Nonetheless, the kitchen is very generous with their portions and gets a 10/10 for presentation. My only other thought is that the owners might want to put some love into the single use bathroom available to staff and customers. The restaurant is a very pretty place.
