He took the car to be checked and was told it would need a new engine. When he called the dealership to talk to them, they were completely nasty. The salesman, Mick, was ubnoxious and kept saying he didn't believe the mechanic. He insisted my brother take it to someone else. After taking the car to 3 different places, one of which they specifically told him to take it to, Mick still refused to believe the car had any problems. He refused to let my brother talk to the manager and even threatened to have me arrested when I said I would come in to talk to the manager in person. What legitimate business does that?!? In the end, my brother is stuck with an expensive paperweight. The car died on the way home from the third garage and no longer runs. My brother was finally able to talk to the manager after I reported them to the BBB. He was rude and offended that we had reported them. He offered to replace the engine with one that had nearly twice the miles on it and we would have had to pay another $1,000 for that. Their owner also owns a Salvage yard, so why would we trust that engine or their skills at replacing one?? My brother offered to return the truck in return for a refund of $10k (less than he paid) and they refused. Horrible company, horrible people, avoid at all cost!! The people are nasty and abusive and do NOT stand behind the cars they sell. They claim to sell "highly reconditioned vehicles" but refuse to help when something goes wrong. From the minute I arrived at Kars Inc., I felt more comfortable than I did at any other car lot I had gone to. Instead of walking up and feeling closely watched and followed by the workers, Tom approached us on the lot, asked us if we had any cars in mind we wanted to look at, and directed us straight to the Cobalt. The process of taking a test drive was a dream. Tom made a photo copy of my driver's license, and let my mom and I take the car for a test drive on our own. I always feel uncomfortable when car dealers come on the test drive, because I would feel like I couldn't make comments on things I didn't like about the cars. It was a real treat that Tom let us take our time to get to know the car on our own so we didn't feel pressured. We ended up buying the car that day! When it came to the wheeling and dealing of prices, Tom let us name the price we wanted to sell my current car for, instead of forcing one upon us. Once I was home, I noticed that my car was leaking water in the passenger's side when it rained. I called Tom about it, and even though my car wasn't under warranty, he and his fellow employees worked endlessly to figure out what was causing it, and fixed the problem without me having to spend a dime! It turns out one of the lines from the sunroof was blocked, which was somehow causing water to come in... I'm not a car expert, so I don't remember all the fancy lingo. Tom felt so bad that he didn't catch this problem before sending the car home with me, and told me that if it ever gets blocked up again, I should bring it in and he will clean it out for me. I also worked with a few of the other employees at Kars Inc. here and there, and I'm bummed I can't remember their names, because the entire experience was great. We recently purchased a van and had a Used Vehicle Inspection performed by Midas. The Midas estimate came out to about $2,500 in repairs. Before I told them to go ahead with the repairs, I remembered something. A year ago, I was checking out potential daycares for my newborn and I met a woman named Kim. I ended up getting an in-home nanny so I didn't need Kim's daycare services, but she had told me that her husband was a mechanic and encouraged me to contact her if I ever needed any work done. I remembered this brief interaction I had with Kim a year later and as I was standing in Midas, I texted her. She immediately responded with her Husband, Nate's, information. I asked Nate if he would be willing to look over the Midas estimate and give me his thoughts. He promptly responded and I emailed him the estimate. After looking it over, he let me know that he was certain we could get all of that work done for well under $2,500 and he gave me the address to this shop. I brought the van into the shop on Monday morning and that's where I met owner Joe Frazier. Now, let me be honest. I have a cushy job, I work from home by day and I take bubble baths and drink wine by night. I still cringe when I have to go into dairy barns for work. I am not "at home" in any auto shop and this one is a far cry from the corporate feel of the Midas I'm used to. There is no sign outside, and inside is filled with concrete, oil, smoke and a cute dog named Scarlett. I was a little nervous on my first trip in. Especially since Joe was sitting at his desk with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, totally looking like Carface Carruthers (the bad dog from the movie All Dogs Go to Heaven). All of the above being said, the aesthetic of the place sort of put me at ease. I could get behind the logic of no fancy waiting room equals not going to charge me $2,500 for $400 worth of parts. And that's exactly what happened--I saved a ton of money. While my car was there, Nate kept me updated via text (which I really appreciate because I'm busy and texting allows me to continue multi-tasking vs. having to stop for a phone call every question I have). I came in to pick up the van on Wednesday and Joe was wonderful about carefully explaining everything to me. He let me know that one of the repairs that Midas quoted didn't even need to be made--the part wasn't even leaking. He wrote down everything that he did and explained why. He didn't treat me like I was incapable of understanding mechanics or try to gloss over anything (which I've experienced in the past). He was just straightforward and patient. In the end, that $2,500 estimate from Midas cost me around $700 and I didn't have to sacrifice good communication or anything. I had to pet a cute dog for like 5 minutes in a dirty shop--totally worth it. After Joe checked me out, a mechanic brought out my keys and he was the friendliest, scariest looking man covered in dirt and oil that I've ever met. All of the warning lights were off in my van. It felt like it was driving a million times better. I'm super pleased. We have a mandatory inspection scheduled next week for ride-share, so I guess we'll be for certain that all of the repairs were made. I'm not oblivious to the potential scam behind the great deal I got, but I really doubt that's the case here. Everything felt legit. The Handy Helper has us for life now. They are a truly authentic and trustworthy neighborhood shop. If you go anywhere else, you're wasting money--and missing out on petting Scarlett the dog. Do the right thing.
