We are Cuban, from Miami and quite critical of our food. After much anticipation we tried out this Cuban restaurant this last weekend for dinner and loved it! The food, the service and the ambiance were outstanding. We had the Camaron al Ajillo for app which was so good. Main course had the Oxtail, the Vaca Frita, the Arroz Imperial. Reviewing for two visits, one positive and one negative hence the three stars. Had an enjoyable experience for brunch. Was eager to return for dinner. Made dinner reservations and arrived on time. Hostess stand was unattended, place was busy and others were waiting. Finally a hostess arrived who was very unfriendly and told us there would be at least a 20 minutes wait and two other parties were in front of us. She was very much unapologetic about the inconvenience. Id like to return but they need to get it together. read more

Went to Azucar not expecting it to be as good as it was. Pleasantly surprised is an understatement. Wife, toddler and I split the Tampa Cubano sandwich and the Ropa Vieja. Everything was amazing. My toddler love the Ropa Vieja. The black beans almost stole the show, they were that good. I'm not a huge plantain fan, but they were tasty too. We will be back. Suggest you go too. We wanted to enjoy this restaurant given other reviews, but a lot of things are providing this unfortunate 1 star rating. The service took forever, 1 server for 14 people. The courses came out so slow. The food was consistently not cooked properly, either over (tough) or undercooked (raw), and not edible. The proteins (i.e. meats, seafood) smelled bad, definitely not fresh, and tasted like they were just old or not handled properly. Given our Cuban heritage and some good reviews we really wanted to enjoy this restaurant, but it was such a disappointment. Not traditional Cuban cuisine. I was looking for Cuban cuisine and thought it was a Cuban restaurant. No black beans and rice.Actually, no beans came with my meal and menu says..No substitutions. Meaning...Not the first to be missing traditional beans. . First time having a tostone kabob. It was meh.. Personally, prefer hot crispy tostones on the side. Not hot, not crispy, and in a kabob. There was even a Chinese version of an item. I walked hoping for Cuban food, not spin offs from a lab. The restaurant was very noisy and difficult to hear people at my table. The best Cuban food I've seen in Charlotte. They make their own croquettes and empanadas.The yuca frita is very good. They do a Tampa style Cubano that I have never seen outside of the Tampa area. The food quality is top notch as is the service. It's in a high traffic area but there's plenty of parking including a parking deck. Highly recommended. read more

Our first and last experience at this restaurant. The server was awful--he didn't take our order, didn't refill our drinks, and when we asked where our food was, he was speechless and didn't even admit that he ignored us and forgot to take our order besides no apology for not taking our order. The manager, instead of apologizing, played a game of asking us if we wanted to order another paella when she knew the server had messed up, also without an apology. The server refused to come to our table to apologize and had a terrible attitude. To top it off, they got our ticket all wrong and we ended up paying extra. It was a dreadful experience, and the server made no effort to make up for his mistake. Also, the environment was depressing, this restaurant looked more like a hangout place for the employees specially our server. If I could give them zero stars, I would.
