We stopped by Bulla Gastrobar on a recent layover the Charlotte. It's in a mall, so drop off and pickup was easy. It's a nice Spanish-themed cuisine restaurant, lots of tapas and Mediterranean cuisine. It was good! Decent cocktail and wine menus as well. We dined on muchas tapas... patatas bravas, lentil soup, Spanish meatballs, potato tortilla, gazpacho, just to name a few. All were good. Service was OK too. Typical mall restaurant where ceiling fixtures are crooked, burned out lightbulbs in many fixtures, dirty ceiling tiles. Food gave it 4 stars, the space itself is mediocre! read more

I was in town and decided to check this place out as I was staying right in south park . They had a lunch special and I decided to go take advantage of that . Pick two for 17$. I walk and sat at the bar . I had the sangria and it was not too bad . While waiting for the food , I'll assume is the manager and some worker came in and started digging in some type of pipes right by the bar and the small was so foul . No warning nothing just started doing I'm not sure what . I had to move myself while the bartender was busy with something else . Now the food finally came in and I had the salmon carpaccio and it's was okay . Didn't taste fresh at all . I was hungry by then and just didn't the courage to get up and find something else . The second pick for two was the half of a Cuban sandwich and some chips . Now that Cuban sandwich was good it's wasn't bad at all . I don't think I will be returning anytime soon . The restaurant is cute but yes that whole ordeal of the pipe while seating at the bad and that awful smell put me off . It wasn't that pack either but somehow was still so slow . Unfortunately I didn't have the best visit at bulla Gastrobar! My friends and I came in during restaurant week this past Thursday night and I had such high hopes. The bulla mule was very tasty they had some cardamom syrup in there for a fun flair and their patatas bravas were also good to start with a few positives. The ceviche started out really good but then I bit into a piece of fish that was still iced and frozen on the inside which wasn't great. I decided to get the paella with chicken and it was a huge portion, but overall pretty bland so I requested some sauce to help it. When I had my meal my fork was taken from appetizers and no one came by to help for almost ten minutes and the first person I asked forgot. The service in general was just very slow. lowkey so mid??? maybe it's because of the subpar interior decoration (im not one to harp on this but why did it give wanna-be RH slash airport bar?) or the hype that accompanied its opening, but the food was objectively not that good. Someone needs to tell the head chef that salt is not a replacement for spice because everything was simultaneously underseasoned and oversalted. Everything came to the table lukewarm except the patatas bravas and the paella, which im inclined to think is an exception rather than the norm. If i had to choose, the cannelloni (pork stuffed in pasta rolls and smothered in bechamel) was my fav, because it was creamy, cheesy, hot, and sufficiently black peppered. Drinks to start we had Pink panther , Bougie Palmer , they were not bad good in taste light on the alcohol. On the food we decide to give a few of the tapas a try , they start u off with some bread & olive oil, not bad. We had the Meatballs , these were good , The Garlic shrimp was a favorite for us, good tasting shrimp, nice dipping the bread in the sauce. The Montadotos was the winner this was very good & finally the Truffle Carbonara , it was not bad good taste to the sauce & pasta. Immediately bringing up a rival rating service was not what I initially had in mind for this review....but Google has them at 6,000 plus reviews, and a 4.9 overall rating. That's an incredible sample size. The good news is they lived up to the hype. As soon as you enter you are greeted warmly by the hostess. You are then lead through the beautifully laid out dining room. The entire space is well designed and decorated, the art is tasteful, and the lightning is very fitting for a laid back dining experience. As I got comfortable, Delilah my server appeared with menus and a wealth of knowledge. She asked was it our first time, and when I said yes her eyes lit up! She recited the entire menu by heart, not in a rushed robotic way either. Small details about what was spicy, or a house favorite she had it covered. 5 star service from Delilah. Then comes the food, I order the patatas, and grilled steak small plates. The patatas came out piping hot and flavorful, a great compliment for my grilled steak. The steak itself was a perfect medium well temp, the overall flavor was magnified by the cumin. The dish came with a mushroom foam on the side, and it was a nice offset for the heaviness of the meat. Lastly I decided to go for the trifecta, and try the paella de pollo. I will say it was good but not mind blowing. I've had it in Madrid a few times, and still wasn't too impressed with the dish in general. But I had to give it a shot. Overall 5 star service, 5 star food, 5 star ambiance. This should be atop your very shortlist of restaurants to try if you haven't. Pro tip: Have a marg! The lavender margarita suggested to us by Delilah was A1. I have to admit we love this place. The food and service is great. This time we went for lunch. The portions were great and it was a great value. We decided to add the tomato Brad to our order and this is the only constructive criticism I have. The tomato bread this day was flavorless. I do make my own and like rosemary and a bit of salt to create a great flavor. This had no seasoning at all and for $19 with cheese and ham a bit of a let down. Our server at the bar was outstanding. I arrived around 3:30 on a beautiful Friday afternoon and was seated right away at my choice of a booth for a party of 2. Catalina was our server. She seemed to be in a rush to serve us, but once we got our food she was less hurried. Bulla Gastrobar is a beautiful restaurant, with lots of ambiance and a cozy atmosphere. We ordered from the pick 2 for lunch and added on dessert. I started with the Crema de Gambas, the base was very flavorful, but there was little shrimp or clam and the pork belly was very tough. My friend had the Patatas Bravas and we both enjoyed it. It's low on the spice if you're afraid of spice. For our entrees, I had the Truffle Carbonara, which had no truffle taste, but was good. My friend had the Pintxo platter, which came with white rice but we expected Spanish rice. The flavor was overall good. Dessert may have been the best part. We decided to order both the Coconut Flan and the Churros. Both were absolutely delicious. Again, the service was ok, the food was pretty ok and the dessert was great. I'd come back possibly for dinner where I hope I might get better service and better quality food. read more

I came here on Christmas Eve Eve with my parents to try to relive some of our food experiences that we had in Spain over Thanksgiving. Usually my parents come to Charleston for Christmas but this year I went to them. I didn't think about how crowded it would be near SouthPark Mall a couple of days before the holiday but fortunately we were still able to find parking pretty easily on the deck. It seemed like the staff was a bit overwhelmed - it took a bit for the host to come back to the stand to sit us (and the few other parties that were there) as he seemed to be helping the wait staff a bit. Our table was near the bar and our server was also helping behind the bar with getting drinks ready, so things were a bit slow. Not sure if people had called out or if scheduling was just off for the night. However, everyone was very friendly so no issues on that end. As for food, we did a selection of a bit of everything. We had some idiazabal cheese with salchichon (we had originally asked for the lomo iberico but it was out), ham croquettes, potato tortilla, patatas bravas, and paella mixta. I wasn't a huge fan of the paella (had more of a risotto texture to me) but my parents enjoyed it. The tortilla also didn't have quite the same consistency as those I had in Spain - this was a bit dryer - but it was still very tasty. Everything else was delicious too. No stress atmosphere so enjoyed kicking back with my vodka tonic. We decided to try the Ceviche de Jalapeño, Grilled Octopus with corn purée topped with salsa and the Paella Mixta (Seafood, chicken, chorizo). Loved the grilled Octopus including the corn puree with salsa topping. This was my favorite. The ceviche was good too, my friend's favorite. The Paella was ok. Hard to find excellent paella. The rice can't be the type that gets mushy so that's sometimes an issue. This dish was evenly cooked but the flavors weren't outstanding. I've had better so it's a tough call since no two are ever quite the same. Still good but I'd try something different next time. Service was outstanding. Checked on us periodically so happy there. Food was delivered in perfect order, no rush fashion. Pricing was on the high side, like fine dining in a casual setting. Overall, I'd definitely return for the Octopus. In no specific order, here are the stars of my show: the Mondaditos (brisket), ceviche (shrimp and fish), grilled octopus, and the omo iberico (ham). All are worthy of reordering! When we sat down, both of our water glasses were dirty, not just smudged but had food particles all over them. We asked our server for new ones and she kindly brought new glasses to us. She was very nice. One thing that kind of annoyed me was when she poured water into said glasses, she never fully poured before pulling the water bottle away, causing water to trail from the glass to the end of the table. Great experience!!! We went around 6:15 on a Thursday. We had a reservation but it didn't seem like we needed one, although they were busy, there were open tables. It was our first time here so our servers did a lovely job explaining the menu. They have small plates as well as larger plates. They have a big alcohol menu and it was half off sangria pitchers when we went. We got the sangria Blanca and it was delicious! We ended up getting the patatas Bravas, sautéed garlic shrimp and the chefs board all to share. It all came out surprisingly quickly and our waiters, Randy and Rui were very attentive. Constantly checking on us and refilling our sangria. The food was all amazing!!!! It was my friends birthday so they gave her little chocolates with a candle. She said they were great. We went with the Serrano ham croquettes as an appetizer based on our servers recommendation- did not disappoint! The center was so creamy and gooey I thought it was loaded with cheese. Turns out that's just finely chopped ham and cream- delicious. The paella takes 35-45 minutes to prepare but was totally worth a bit longer wait honestly. It was plenty for two, could do for four if you also have some apps and tapas. We had ample leftovers. It was very flavorful and well seasoned, love the skillet presentation. The fish tempura was my least fave thing. The fish was cooked gently and lightly battered but didn't compare to tempura. The pisto Manchego was a very heavily seasoned Spanish version of ratatouille and overwhelmed the lighter fish. Tasty, just not my favorite. I've heard great things about their brunch, so I made reservations for patio dining at 11:30 am...and it was a perfect day for it! They had many seatings available outdoors, so we probably could have just walked in and got a good seat. They had a special Prix Fixe Brunch menu, where you have several options for each course...with the total being 30 per person. Quite the deal, given the amount of foods. My hubby chose Avocado Toast, Huevo Bulla and Blueberry & Ricotta Pancakes...and I chose Grilled Flatbread, Chicken & Waffles, and also Blueberry & Ricotta Pancakes. We tried each others' as well...and all I can say is, YUM...to all! Their brunch foods were just everything!! Each and every item was so delish....although if I had to choose one, it had to be their awesome pancakes. Also, I must add that each and every course was quite generous...not a dainty sized portion. I was so full after this, I couldn't even eat dinner when I got home. BTW, I also tried their Sangria Blanca...and WOW. I loved their Sangria Roja, but this was even better! As always, everything was on point...food, service, ambiance, music. All smooth, seamless and sophisticated. Absolutely incredible! I must suggest the chorizo stuffed dates. They are a staple and absolutely incredible. This place can get pretty packed and have a long wait so be sure to either make a reservation or you can sit at the bar. The bar is usually full too but the bar crew is nice and service is great. Our server had the energy of a game show host and enthusiastically recommended nearly the whole menu. The space is bright and spacious, with ample seating and even a covered patio. Given its location right across from SouthPark Mall, the crowd was no surprise. As for the food: The suffed dates and brisket appetizer were standouts. The ham croquettes were good, though lacking a bit of crunch. The shirmp carbonara. A bit of a misfire, topped with a fried egg, but the sauce didn't quite come together. We came here to celebrate my sister's birthday on a Friday. Since we knew that it was going to be a busy night, because it was a Friday and also the weekend of Father's Day. The service was slow as expected. At one point they forgot about the table. The food was ok. The paellas are smaller than expected. The bartender was swamped so a second pitcher of sangria took forever. Since it was a birthday dinner they did offer a free birthday dessert. Me and my boyfriend came here to celebrate our 5 month anniversary. We came in pretty late, but the atmosphere was still pretty lively at the bar. The music was great, and the food was amazing. As a Hispanic person, I have high expectations on what Ceviche is supposed to taste like. My expectations were exceeded. We also had the Tuna Tartar and that had some mango in it, and there was a side of 'spicy garlic ' aioli which paired amazing. Located in a busy shopping area, there are limited parking spots outside of the venue. You can park and it's less than a two minute walk to the door. Reservations are accepted but we had no issue as walk ins. There is booth and table seating. Good for groups, date night or just friends sharing small bites. Clean and moderately lit, the art was appealing and the customer service was supportive. Thanks Cartier for helping to make our first time a great time. There is a varied list of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Anyone dining here that has never had tapas should know that it is not huge portions but enough to pass among those at your table and to get a heavy sampling. The standout item was the ceviche with the plantain chips. It was fresh and saucy (like me) and our server made sure to bring additional plantain chips. My least favorite were the meatballs. Not terrible, but at the same time not life changing. My drink of choice was the bougie Palmer. It was refreshing and was mixed perfectly so that it had the right level of taste, sweet and booze. The bathrooms were sizable but were in need of a little love during my visit. The dining area was well maintained and the temperature was appropriate so that I wasn't freezing. The calamari was good but there were portions of it that had too much seasoning on top. I'm guessing after it's friend they hit it with seasoning but whomever was back there seasoning had a heavy hand. For the clams with pork belly, it was good but again not a standout dish in my opinion. Octopus is served here as a salad (see photo provided) and alone. The octopus salad was fresh and the accompanying vegetables and marinade married the items well. To round out the dining experience were the churros. Chocolate and caramel sauce come with a generous portion. You can enjoy them plain or by dipping. There is sugar sprinkled on top so be mindful if you're monitoring your intake. We had a small family reunion of 13 adults and a 4yr old. We reserved a private room for a $250 deposit and were told that we could order a la carte, but they could not divide the bill and there would need to be a minimum purchase of $500 for the 3hr reserved room. We ended up spending $700, but 4 entrees had still not come out at the end of the 3hrs. They apologized and offered coffee or desserts while we still waited for people to get their meals. We only order one coffe and 2 desserts and yet they charged us for them at the end! We got 2 meals to go because everyone was ready to leave, and one of the steaks was so raw that no one wanted to take it home. They only took off 3 items that we did not receive and offered no discount for the fact that 4 people never got their food until the end. The sales manager was rude in how she explained the food she removed from the bill (as if she was doing us a favor!) and overall had terrible customer service in how she handled their poor service. I do not see how it raining outside affects their cook staff, but she had every excuse under the sun with no care for us and our experience! The 3 stars for the food is because a steak was raw even after wating 3 hrs for it, the Patatas Bravas were undercooked so they were too hard, and the Garlic Shrimp was undercooked as well.
