Had a great dinner here on our last trip to CDMX. Tried their famous mole sauce and had some ceviche. I Loved the ceviche. Their mole was also good, very non bitter. Most people tend to stay away from mole because of the bitter notes, but Mexican mole is super complex. Started with their chicken tortilla soup which was alright. Service was great very accommodating. They spoke English and they cater a lot to American visitors. Majority of people at the restaurant were American so the overall experience wasn't one that felt like authentically Mexican because everyone spoke english, but I had no complaints. Food was great. Atmosphere was pleasant lots of candles and had a very romantic feel. We tried to get reservations at their insta-famous sister location in the Zocalo but they were booked months out so we ate at their Condesa Location. They have the same menu. I lucked into my visit to Azul, as my husband and daughter thought they'd prank me with the grasshopper guacamole. Azul is an interesting upscale restaurant in the heart of the historic district. It's down a little side street, and you enter through enormous historic themed doors into an enchanting courtyard with a garden feel. There are a lot of trees roped in Azul colored lighting, and the leaves seem to form a rooftop. We suspect there is a glass ceiling, to protect guests if it rained, though we couldn't tell for sure. It was a bit cool and didn't seem that the gas heaters were lit, though there wasn't one very close to our table, but draped over each chair were comfy blankets which I draped over my shoulders rather than keep my coat on. So the guacamole was ceremoniously ordered, and it was pressured to try it, but luckily a bowl of guacamole was delivered, with grasshopper bits in a separate bowl, and I grabbed some yummy guac pre-insect. They insisted it tasted like bacon mixed in. I've tried my share of exotic foods, but draw the line at insects. (They'd tried ant larva at the Hilton earlier, which btw costs more than the sirloin steak.) The guac came with plenty of warm crunchy tortillas. I ordered the grouper, a classic from the north Yucatán coast. It was described as being prepared with achiote, served with plantain, avocado, fried tortilla strips, and "X-ni-pek" salsa. It looked like a work of art when served, and was by far the best meal I had during my six days in the city. For dessert we shared their version of lava cake. The gooey chocolate was warm and a touch bitter, and the delicious cake was served with Gorgonzola Ice cream. None of the interesting ingredients were strong or overpowering. I'd go so far as to describe them as a perfect blend. And I have to give a shout out to the wait staff, though I saw not a female amongst them the night we were there. Hey were very attentive, and worked as a team as they set up for a group of eleven coming in shortly before closing. read more

This place was my first dinner meal in Mexico City. We made reservations the day of for 4 people at 6:30pm and they were able to accommodate us. The restaurant was relatively empty when we went in at 6:30pm but definitely got busy by 7:30pm. To start, they gave us shrimp soup on the house which was displayed in the cute little Mexican cups. I tried the grasshopper guacamole and honestly, I can do without. The grasshopper made it salty. We shared the tamales as well - nothing to brag about. I was excited for the enchiladas de mole negro but honestly it was too heavy for me. I don't think I'll come again as there were much better restaurants in Mexico City. read more

I went to lunch there today and ordered the black Molé enchiladas. They were good (just good-not great) however, the service was less than desirable. For what you're paying for lunch in Mexico City, I would expect more. Once my mail was delivered, no one came to check to see if everything was good. I had to flag down a waiter to get another drink. The restaurant only had one other table in it, so I felt like I should be getting extraordinary service especially since that's what you go to these nice restaurants for. There literally was no excuse for not giving me any attention. And when I signed the bill and gave a 12% tip, which I thought was more than generous based on literally no one talking to me except to take my order... A waiter, and not my waiter for the record, came back to my table and had the nerve to ask if I had made the right tip. Not to mention they sat me in a back corner of the restaurant next to a very big sign for the restaurant that infringed on my seating. I would suggest if you are interested in spending over $25 for lunch in Mexico City, you go to somewhere else besides this place. It was not worth it. I had better service with a walk up Taqueria where are my lunch was only $8 and my tip to them reflected it. read more

My group of 7 came here on a Saturday morning for brunch. Upon entering, you're welcomed to this very chic and clean space. It opens up to sunlight with lush greenery surrounding the walls. Even though we didn't have reservations, they seated us right away. Since I overstuffed myself with tacos the night before, I decided on a light meal to start my day. While everyone else had Mexican breakfast dishes, I opted for a Season Fruit Bowl (92 MXN) and sides of Yogurt, Granola, and Honey (45 MXN each). I did like that the fruits included papaya, watermelon, and melon --all my of favorites. Besides that, it was pretty basic. I did try some of the Red Chilaquiles with Eggs (135 MXN) and Black Mochila Enchiladas (210 MXN). Both were good, but pretty heavy dishes, which I was glad I didn't have on my own. One of my friend was also getting mezcal recommendations from the waiter, who was pouring shots in a this cute bowl to drink from. This was a pretty experience with some very strong alcohol (one of them was 48% alcohol content, damn). Overall, if you like some very bougie restaurant, this place is for you. Personally, I like my hole in the wall and street foods when in CDMX. A+ for the gorgeous colors and presentation from the food and drinks to the decor though. read more

The main dishes were okay but honestly not worth the hype or visuals. How can you be authentic when u blend guacamole and it has no flavor? Also watch your tips at the end, we tipped 20% on a $250 (usd) bill and they tried adding 300 pesos on top of it and claimed to have been an "error". We flew into to CDMX and checked into our AirBnB in Colonia La Condesa. Tired and hungry from our traveling we walked a few hundred meters to Azul Condesa. Without reservations we waited about 20 mins and got seated. What a relaxing atmosphere to unwind and be catered to. The all-male wait staff was so accommodating with unhurried but prompt service. We ordered a beer and a house margarita and a bottle of sparkling mineral water. Food orders were taken without a fuss: Tacos de Lechón and Enchiladas de Mole Negro con Pollo. The lechón was moist, wrapped in a flour tortilla and wrapped again individually in banana leaves. This kept them warm and succulent. Enchiladas were amazingly complex in flavor true to Oaxaqueño style. Overall top-notch professional service and serious flavor. The tagline below the restaurant name outside says, in Spanish, "Traditional Mexican Food, but Seriously" ...and that is exactly what you get. read more

This was my favorite restaurant during our entire time in CDMX. Not only was the service amazing (in spite of being extremely busy) the food was delicious! We had a tomato salad that was so tasty! Bright tomatoes, tasty avocado and the best oil cured black olives! We also ordered a tamalito de chaya and some traditional guacamole. The tamalito was so flavorful! We went next door to order drinks because they did not have much of a waiting area. We came back 10 min before the hour and we were seated promptly. The care and attention of the wait staff was exceptional. The level of service we received was definitely higher than the price point we could afford in the states. It was just too notch. I felt like a Bougie Bitch for sure. Azul had several types of meat and animals to choose from, which was the whole objective of this trip for me, to increase the number of animals I've eaten. I had the deer with a side salad and cooked vegetables and they were phenomenal. We also had some classic alcoholic drinks, which I did forget what they were called, oops, my bad. azel condesa overrated first impression: the menus are color inket printed with pics taken by the original iphone. they are falling out of the kinkos binders they were put in. food was good. i also thank them for honoring my reservation since i was off by 30 minutes the female server was garbage. she tolerated us and it was very functional. blanco colima or maximo bistrot was the complete opposite experience in terms of service and they have superior food. i do not understand the hype at all. read more

My meal at Azul Condesa was a simply amazing. Every bite of the food was impressive, with a special seasonal menu highlighting the mango. Two of us ordered a selection of dishes to share, allowing us to try many flavors. The service was truly impressive- we had several questions about the mezcal choices, and they were kind enough to explain many of them, offering a taste of a few before we selected one. The restaurant itself is adorable, with an intimate feel and a very cute outdoor space. Overall, this was a very special part of our travel to CDMX, and I hope to return one day soon. read more

Beautiful restaurant and wonderful spot for lunch and breakfast. I had the Enchiladas de Pollo con Mole Negro. For my taste, their mole has too much chocolate to be a real Oaxacan mole. Chocolate should be in the background but never the predominant flavor, as it was here. Nitpicking a little because it was still really good, but I did look around at some other dishes coming out and regretted my choice a little. You definitely cannot do much better in the corn tortilla arena since a lady is making them by hand when you walk in. read more

We visited Azul on our first day in Cuidad de Mexico (Mexico City) its was a great experience. The service was over the top. They first offer you a taste of many different Mescal's they were amazing. We had the Cochinita Pibil, short rib and for desert it was a bread pudding type, it was bomb. The decor of the restaurant was beautiful, love the candles and the mural of the Virgin Mary. We sat in the out door courtyard that was covered, loved the plants around us, it made us feel like we were in a forest. I recommend this restaurant anyone that is going to Mexico City. Oh the Tortillas here were really good. I can't remember how many refilled we got but they were amazing. Freshly made!!! read more

We were referred to this restaurant on our last night in CDMX by concierge at our hotel, and he did not lead us wrong. The food was excellent, particularly the mole, and the atmosphere was very pleasing. From the moment we entered, the environment was relaxing and captivating. I loved the walls of candles flickering and the lush greenery in the back of the restaurant. We each had enchiladas, mine being standard, but my friend's the dark mole. The mole sauce was mind-blowing. It was the best mole I've ever had. I enjoyed my enchiladas, too, but the mole was the way to go. Unfortunately, we skipped dessert, but the menu, especially the chocolate portion, looked incredible. They do have vegan options, as well as a few vegetarian options. I am not sure how difficult it would be to customize if you don't speak Spanish well, though. The staff knew some English, and it went fine with our limited Spanish, but we didn't have any special requests. They do offer English menus upon request. The service was a touch slow, but nothing offensive. They also have a great Mezcal menu with recommendations from the head chef. Just go and get the mole. It's worth it. read more

Azul doesn't get as much buzz as some of the other restaurants in CDMX, but this was one of the best meals I had in Mexico City! The food is excellent and the atmosphere here feels so upscale. I would definitely recommend Azul for a special occasion or just to treat yourself! The guacamole ($195 MXN) was delicious, and they're happy to make it without chapulines / grasshoppers. The enchiladas de mole negro ($295 MXN) were an authentic taste of Oaxacan cuisine! You can get them filled with chicken or soft white cheese. The hot drinking chocolate ("postre líquido," $75 MXN) was the perfect way to close out our meal. They make it at your table so it's perfectly light and frothy even though it's just water and cacao. There are many flavors to choose from, but I would recommend the spicy one. We seriously considered coming back here just for the hot chocolate because it was that good! read more

I absolutely have to rate Azul as one of my top five restaurants that I have ever been to - ever. They provided me a mix of olives and tomatoes (on the house) that I very much enjoyed starting out with. Then, I had a creamy soup, made from a specific kind of flower, followed by ceviche. I finished out the meal with an amazing cappucino and flan. I was eating by myself, and they took very good care of me. I felt astonished with the beautiful atmosphere, and great service, and lastly the amazing food. I wish I could bring everyone I know to this restaurant! read more

Quite possibly the best mole I've ever had. Everything her is spectacular. The stonework on the walls mimics the construction technique of Teotihuacán, with candles hanging from the indoor trees. Everything about Azul Condesa in Mexico City is top-notch! Our waiters and the matre'd were all most helpful, friendly, knowledgeable of menu items, and very attentive. The ambiance was lovely. Before we ordered they brought a bowl containing a tiny salad appetizer. The menu offered so many unique items, full of many special ingredients; it was difficult to decide. Before dinner my husband enjoyed a tobala mesqual cocktail. He loved it. The first item we ordered was Tortilla Soup. It was served in a china bowl that had a matching top that looked like a lady. Such a lovely presentation! Inside was the best tortilla soup I've ever seen or tasted. It had tiny tortilla squares, slices of avocado, chunks of chicken, thick dollops of cream fraiche, and cheese. It was so delightful! Next I ordered the Enchiladas with Mole Sauce. The enchiladas were filled with tender chicken and covered with a generous amount of spectacular mole sauce, made from a special Oaxacan recipe. Crumbled white cheese and slivers of jicama garnished the top. An excellent and rich dish. My husband ordered the Manchamantales. They were made with ancho Chile mole and contained pears, plantains and pineapple. The fanciest tortillas came with this dish. They had a design toasted on them. He said the dish was quite tasty, and he enjoyed every bite of this unique recipe. Although we were more than satisfied, we thought the Dessert Menu was amazing, so we were tempted and ordered the Tamalito. It was presented in a banana leaf package with a hand painted long pick closing it. It contained chocolate, pecans, and pineapple. It was topped with chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and vanilla sauce. It is a traditional Oaxacan child's birthday treat recipe. Our check was presented in a lovely, red, delicately carved box.
