In Seattle, all Miyagi know two things: fish and karate. Hmm... I think this place is/was a 3.5, but erring on the side of caution, I'm rounding down to 3. The seafood was fresh and the Nabeyaki Udon was good (that's my thresshold for good japanese place). The problem was the lunch menu. My rule of thumb is, if you open for lunch, support lunch pricing. $11 for lunchtime teriyaki is just too much. Oh--and the peanut gallery said that the bathrooms were a little shanty town, given the prices. At the same time, this didn't seem like much of a happening place for dinner either. I bet nicer chairs and tables would do the trick though. Something just was a little bit off. Would I go back you ask? Well, if it's for lunch, I'd prolly find something a lil cheaper. Positively "A-OK." It's more of a "traditional, imitation crab" experience versus the "trendy, sustainable" experience down the street. And the prices and ambience reflect that. Chicken yakisoba was fine. Chicken was a bit dry but not greasy. Unagi roll was a big hit, and we would order the gyoza and salmon roll again. Rarely do I go to West Seattle for anything, but a particularly haughty friend of mine derives great pride from creating itineraries for weekday evening outings, so in an effort to humor him I tagged along. Tried the Chicken Teriyaki Bento w/ California Roll. Teriyaki was standard, and California roll was equally so. There was nothing particularly wrong with the food here, but nothing particularly right either. They got the basics down, and thats about it. The variety of bento boxes is awesome. The miso and teriyaki are good. But the sushi and service are terrible. We ordered bentos with tempura, teriyaki, and california roll. We didn't get the tempura and the imitation crab in the rolls was slimy. We tried for ten minutes to get the servers attention. But he was busy texting and chatting with the sushi chef. read more

Dragon roll - great presentation, miso - OK, sake - good, spicy tuna - fine, albacore - lovely, salmon- yummy, scallops - fresh, tea - flavorful, butterfish - buttery and creamy goodness, sweet shrimp - disappeared without a trace. I decided to leave the comforts of my Ballard 'hood one Sunday afternoon to hang out with a gf of mine. I stopped into this West Seattle hole in the wall after my gf (who lives right around the corner) raved about the place. I was going to head over to Mashiko's for some takeout, but my gf said that Azuma's was her and her BF's go-to sushi place because it was really good and not as over-priced as Mashiko's. While I wanted sushi, I got really excited when I saw curry on their menu. Japanese curry is something I fell in love with when I lived in Japan during my foreign exchange student stint in HS. There aren't many Japanese places in the States that offer curry, so I was super excited when I saw Azuma's offered it. I ordered takeout... I was pleased that I was able to phone in my order, walk around the corner and pick up my order in less than 10 minutes. I was bummed when I got home, though... the curry I had ordered was far from traditional Japanese curry and closer to Vietnamese curry. I should have just stuck with my original craving and gone with my gf's raving reviews on their sushi. STOOPS ON ME! While the meal was good, it wasn't great! I am still interested in hitting up this place in the future... for sushi, though, not the curry, just to see if it's as great as my gf says it is! read more

This place shines most on seafood. Me and a friend stopped here in the mood for some noodles, after sitting down and getting settled in we had order a Beef Udon as well as some calamari which was fried to perfection with nothing to complain about, tempura which my friend seemed to love but when it came to the sushi.. you can see the love! I had gotten a Maguro Nigiri, but the sushi chef himself recommended the Bluefin, which I got instead. MAN was that a great decision, the fish was nice and fatty and just melted like heaven! It was so I good I had to get 2 to go along with 2 Magaro's. As for the Udon it lacked flavor, the beef had been stewing for a while but the noodles tasted excellent and though the broth was pretty bland it packed flavor wherever you could taste it, it was good enough to keep this review 5 stars! Overall Azuma is a very nice toned down restaurant that shines in sushi and tempura, this is not say that you should only get sushi from these guys as I did see other guest get other dishes than sushi! read more

Delicious food, but service was horrible. The waitress didn't bring out 3 of the 5 things I ordered: tea, rice, and miso soup never showed. The sashimi and roll did show. I had to ask 3 times for tea. The menu says the sashimi platter comes with miso soup and rice. I never got the miso soup. When the sashimi and roll I ordered arrived, she asked if I wanted the rice, like it would be a bother. I said no. After not getting my tea or miso soup, I was done with this place. I will give them credit: They were quick at preparing the sushi. But 3 strikes and your out...I will not be returning. read more

Love this place! We eat there once a week and really appreciate the service we get. Great place to meet up with friends and the staff treats us wonderfully. After a bad visit with Mashiko(they were total snobs to us considering they are over priced they would be nicer when robbing us) its nice to sit with a group of people that treat you well while making sushi to order, they always greet us right away and even when it's busy the wait isn't long and the manager always has a smile for us. Edamame is served warm with salt. Cold edamame is never the same. Will be going here for a long time. read more

As a previous Yelper mention, Mashiko is closed for lunch - we found this out firsthand today as we headed out for a sushi fix. No worries, as Azuma was right down the street. Our service was great with the noticeable exception that the miso soup came out about halfway through our meal. We went with three rolls: California (Imitation crab, cucumber and avocado), Poki (Ahi tuna and scallions with chili & sesame oil) and Tropicana (Tuna, avocado, and mango). The California roll was good, as per usual for a CA roll. The Poki heat of the chili added a nice depth and it was a tie between that and the nice surprise of mango in the Tropicana that tied these two rolls as the best of the meal. We have come to Azuma many times but less and less within the last year or so. It seems that everytime they have a new menu we immediately know what the reason for it is, yes their prices went up again. I feel they've gone up at least 2-3 within the last year. Now if you were serving magnificent sushi then it might be justified but the sushi is nothing out the ordinary. I'd like to know what times to go when the fish is fresh because lately we have been let down. Usually the service is good depending on who's taking care of you but every now and then you get a robot lady. I'd say this will be our last time there for dinner or lunch, I'll stick to my local teriyaki spot who also happens to serve sushi and I would put it up against Azuma's any day and see where it stands. I'm new to West Seattle, and was really looking forward to finding a nice mid scale sushi restaurant. Unfortunately, this place was not it. Service was kind and attentive, but the food was sincerely subpar. There were no sushi lunch specials, only bento and warm dishes. I should have known then to find something else. But we went forward anyway, and I ordered the 5 piece nigiri plate and substituted in the spicy poke roll instead of the California roll. My boyfriend ordered the tonkatsu bento box. The miso was anemic and flavorless, the tonkatsu was thin, unappetizing, and not warm when it came out. One of my nigiri had a bone in it, another piece was somewhat chewy, and the poke roll tasted of nothing but spice and an absurd amount of sesame oil that completely covered the flavor of decent looking poke. The only mitigating offer made for the bone was to nix the extra cost of the substitution ($2). We paid and got out of there as quickly as we could, and do not intend to ever go back. My husband and I got 3 rolls to share Alaskan roll, philly roll and salmon skin roll! We loved the presentation and the quickness of receiving our meal. The Alaskan and philly roll were great. This used to be one of our favorites but has gone way downhill lately. We were served fishy smelly yellowtail that looked as old as it smelled. How could they not be embarrassed to serve this? Also, the tempura shrimp (our kids favorite) was floury and undercooked. What a shame. Never again. also...they didn't want to take the nasty fish that we did not eat off the bill. I've been eating at this restaurant at lunchtime for several years. The Sashimi Plate is excellent. I am also partial to Unagi (Eel) and Yellowtail Sushi. The prices are reasonable, particularly compared to places like Blue C Sushi and other conveyer belt Sushi delivery systems. The service at Azuma's is attentive and responsive to my requests (e.g. low sodium soy sauce, a large Wasabi-Soy mixing bowl). The Sushi Chef is very artful in his Sashimi presentations. I really enjoy coming here for lunch with my coworkers. The restaurant is run by a cute couple and the wife is the only waitress. Service is pretty fast and very friendly :) Sushi is really fresh. Upon entering the restaurant, I had high hopes for this place given how busy this restaurant was. 90% of the tables were filled! However as I waited for over 30 minutes for a bowl of ramen, I began to lose confidence in the service of this place. Tables to my left and right were constantly forgotten by the waiters. The customers asked for items like chopsticks, drinks, sauces and the waiters simply forgot about it. Finally after 35 minutes, my noodles came. I looked down and instead of ramen, like I ordered, I got udon. Ultimate fail. I had 10 minutes to scarf down the wrong noodles before heading next door to Sugar Rush for a meeting. After living in West Seattle for almost 3 years, I visited Azuma about two weeks ago for the very first time with a few friends. I found the environment quite laid back and casual which I loved. Instead of a snobby stuck up feel, it had a great friendly atmosphere and the service was fast and accurate. I have a thing about seaweed and a low quality one makes me want to barf so when I ordered the Shrimp Tempura Roll, I was worried. The battered shrimp was sweet and crunchy and the seaweed just melted away. It was amazingly smooth! I also ordered the Tuna, Salmon and the Butter-fish Nigiri, all three of them were delicious. I could live without the Banana Tempura, it wasn't terrible but I much rather have the Tempura Ice Cream and the Green Tea Ice Cream. They were heavenly! read more
