We were sat at the opposite end of the table from another couple in a little room. The servers were plenty friendly and spoke good English to assist us. My husband got a burger and I ordered the Mac and cheese and a salad and we shared. It was a lot of food! We also ordered the pancake shredded dessert which came with a jelly type of sauce. Everything was good but it was sooo heavy. I certainly recommend sharing so that you have enough room in your stomach. We would return next time we were in Salzburg. read more

During our first visit to Salzburg in 2009, we asked our hotelier to recommend a genuine Austrian restaurant - one that did not offer "Menus for tourists" and that prepared authentic dishes. He recommended the Bärenwirt. Returning to Salzburg with our 11 adult children and grandchildren, we wanted them to have a similar authentic experience so we made a reservation at our old haunt, which has been in operations since 1663. Things have changed over the last 16 years. On our first visit, the menu was only in German and our server spoke to us in German until we threw in the towel and admitted, "Ich spreche nicht sehr gut Deutsch. Englisch, bitte?" (I don't speak German well. English, please?) Now, 16 years later, English has become the default and today, the menu is presented in four languages. But the food is still just as authentic and delicious. Taking grandkids who range from 10 to 15 years of age, we were bracing for a few refrains of, "I don't LIKE that! It's weird!" or similar rants, but we heard none of it. All the kids (and parents, too, for that matter) dove gamely into the menu and found things that were to their liking. The menu is large and varied. Main dishes include roast pork, pasta, sausage with roasted potatoes, dumplings, goulash, schnitzel, fried chicken, boiled beef and (of course) bratwurst. The food was good, there was an excellent variety, and it was brought out quickly. Prices for main dishes were quite reasonable, with most under €20. Wiener Schnitzel was the most expensive, at €28,90 but it was an outlier. The only issue I had was the price of the soft drinks. Between our grandkids, they had 10 Cokes - at €5.90 EACH. That was €59 for sodas; more than we paid for all of our beers. My wife was determined that, for dessert, the kids and grands would all taste Kaiserschmarren mit Zwetschkenröster - cut-up pancake with raisins topped with powdered sugar and served with a jam for dipping. A truly Austrian experience that everyone enjoyed, though some more than others. On the night we visited, we encountered several other parties of Americans. I have no way of knowing whether the place has become that popular with visitors or management simply corralled us into the same room. Regardless, it was a very pleasant evening and one I'm sure we will repeat the next time we're in Salzburg. read more

One can only eat so much schnitzel! I decided to try something new from the seasonal menu and ordered the deer stew. Scary! Considering I've never had deer. There's a first time for everything, am I right?! The stew itself was pretty flavorful. The deer taste is similar to beef but with a drier texture, similar to how turkey compares to chicken??? The brussels sprout and potato croquette were absolutely delicious. I also had the liver dumpling soup. The liver dumplings were more pungent than expected but still very good. The dumpling that came with goulash was huge, but under seasoned, chewy and dense. The schnitzel was decent and the fried chicken was good - both used the same batter. Same traditional Austrian menu, but having been to both: vastly better food at Barenwirt. Better beer. Better service. Nicer atmosphere in a 400 year old building. Similar or identical prices. I had the goulash and the roast pork on separate trips. My wife enjoyed the fried chicken and schnitzel. The clear soup with crepe / pancake is terrific. The food is honestly better here than in any of the leading contenders in Salzburg and you will have a MUCH faster, easier time getting seated and served. The menu here is quite large and features a lot of traditional Austrian foods. I ordered the frothed beer soup, Wiener schnitzel, and kasespatzel - all of which were absolutely delicious. The frothed beer soup tasted a bit like a better and lighter cream of mushroom soup. The Wiener schnitzel is quite a large portion and came with parsley potatoes and cranberry sauce. They are famous for their fried chicken backhendl here however I preferred the wiener schnitzel instead. The breading at Barenwirt was very close to panko breading and was unexpected compared to other Austrian restaurants we tried out. The chicken itself was not very flavorful so you will have to use the lemon and maybe some pepper if you want it to have more variety in taste. The chicken was cooked super tenderly and moist and the chicken meat itself was exception. But I would have preferred some taste to the chicken itself. read more

I had already planned on eating the Weiner schnitzel one of the best known specialities of Viennese cuisine, and one of the national dishes of Austria. The Weiner Schnitzel here was cooked to perfection. The light crisp breading on the outside and tender on the inside. This has to be one of the best in Austria. It also had a side of whipped cream with horseradish on top which was strange at first but worked well. I had the clear soup with pancakes, which was light and flavorful. For mains, he had a plate of roasted meats with a giant dumpling (which tasted more like a matzo ball). The sauce was excellent and the texture of the meat was tender. I had the dumplings with eggs and salad and it had a rich flavor but felt light. The salad was tossed with a tangy vinaigrette, which accented the dish perfectly. Walked what seemed like 50 miles from Alstadt but finally arrived at Barenwirt. Just like last night at Swettlers we were warned there were no tables. Then I told the guy we're Americans and we were sent upstairs immediately. All the tables were empty. Gabor was our waiter and he was quite the character. The lager beer was cold and tasty. The place was cool with a good vibe. All was good. On the recommendation of Gabor I had the pork instead of the veal schnitzel. He promised it was pounded thin and it was. It was cooked perfectly and seasoned just right. Tammy the Tornado made short work of the fried gnocchi and the side salad too. The waiter Gabor recommended some crazy fried apple dessert. I almost didn't order it. It was amazing. Just get it! On a side note the following is a declaration of love for Tammy The Tornado Vestal. She is an angel sent to me from heaven. She gave me the best 30 plus years of my life and I love her very much for doing so. One day my reviews will come to an end and it's not because I hate yelp. Let me start by saying I don't really understand why they claim to have Austria's best fried chicken. I think the chicken is a bit strange and tastes a tiny bit like a damp cellar. The batter is very nicely fried and the chicken itself is nicely cut and plated. They even fried the innards if you'd like to give that a try as well. Is it the fact that Bärenwirt is in Salzburg, or the fact that this restaurant is nearly 400 years old that makes it so charming? Don't know. Don't care! All I know is I really enjoyed coming here for lunch one of the days I was in Salzburg this past September. Nothing on the inside is likely original to the grand opening of this restaurant sometime in the 1600s, but it is still really quaint and I'm sure in the evenings, this is a great pub to come to. Service was pretty good. I was tempted to break out my German but got really shy and ended up speaking English the whole time which was fine. I got a noodle dish that was absolutely amazing and my colleague got a dish with lots o' meat and he was really excited about it. It seemed like most of the people there weren't tourists unless they were all from Germany, but only one other table had people speaking English, everyone else was German so maybe... maybe... this isn't totally a tourist trap.
