In Salzburg on a day trip from Munich; stopped for a late lunch. Delicious food, quiet and charming setting before what I'm sure will be a busy evening. Friendly service. We had the stuffed schnitzel, pork schnitzel and goulash. We all loved our food. Goulash was delicious.

Amazing to think this establishment has been in operation since 1663! They serve traditional Austrian cuisine in a nice historic building. Wait staff was attentive and prompt. Food was amazing. I would recommend the sausage and potatoes with a side of delicious sauerkraut. We made reservations in advance to make sure we could get a table for 6. They had a full house on the day of our visit.

Having just arrived in Salzburg, we were hungry and looking for an authentic Austrian restaurant. Found Barenwirt about 15 minutes walk from our hotel. It is a hidden gem , one of the oldest and authentic Austrian place with delicious food and great selection of beers. It has been around since the 1600s !!!! Local favourite and does not fail to impress. The fried chicken was quite unique, delicious and very tasty, Austrian potato salad was delectable. Staff are friendly and welcoming.

Barenwirt was so good! Food was very authentic, they are known for being the "best" fried chicken. The breading was perfect, not too oily. The cranberry sauce for the schnitzel was delicious! The patio view was so pretty. The service was great, always accommodating to speak English. Do be aware about the smell of the restaurant. They fry a lot of their food so the smell is very strong if you sit inside - that's my only but! Thankfully we were able to sit outside.

One can only eat so much schnitzel! I decided to try something new from the seasonal menu and ordered the deer stew. Scary! Considering I've never had deer. There's a first time for everything, am I right?! The stew itself was pretty flavorful. The deer taste is similar to beef but with a drier texture, similar to how turkey compares to chicken??? The brussels sprout and potato croquette were absolutely delicious. I also had the liver dumpling soup. The liver dumplings were more pungent than expected but still very good. I highly recommend making a reservation because it does get busy. We were lucky to get a table and ended up sharing it with another couple.

Make a reservation and make it easier on you :) Got the goulash, schnitzel and the fried chicken, which is what they are known for. The dumpling that came with goulash was huge, but under seasoned, chewy and dense. The schnitzel was decent and the fried chicken was good - both used the same batter. The chicken was popular as all other tables were ordering them, some table had 3 orders lol, but definitely gotta try it once. Overall, the food was decent. The interior was nice, we sat outside, but it was very windy when we visited, so it was a bit of a challenge. The service was great, the staff member was awesome, ensured we were doing well.

This is the kind of food that puts you to sleep. The cozy interior along with the hearty food made me feel right away at home in Salzburg. The food was impeccable of course -- the portion sizes is something else indeed. The seasoning was perfect, and the meat was beyond tender. The strudel stole the show though. You cannot skip it!

Indoor table service. Highly recommend reservations as they are popular most nights. Fresh beer on tap with traditional Austrian dishes. Good fried chicken (backhendl), sausages, schnitzels, geröstete semmelknödel. Multi-lingual menus.

The atmosphere, ambience and service was so friendly. They spoke in English fluently and I didn't have to be so intimidated with having to use my Google translate lol I had their famous fried chicken which was juicy and coated with their schnitzel coating/batter. We also ordered the bratwurst with cold potato salad. German style potato salad wow so good the bratwurst was herby but it's not like the brats in US so think consistency of bologna but bratwurst flavored. All in all it is what a neighborhood place should be.

A really fun experience. Good food we had with goulash with a huge dumpling that was delicious. Very savory beet flavors. Rich and lovely. Also having boiled beef with some great horseradish and potatoes. Both were very authentic dishes.

Bratwurst + stein of beer = classic Austrian vibes

I wandered in without a reservation and was seated at my only option: a little two top that was perfect for a solo diner. A stein of Augustiner märzenbier to wash down my plate of bratwurst, roasted potato and sauerkraut made for a lovely treat after a casual walk across the river. The food is a bit hearty for summer weather but as the day was on the cooler side I somehow muddled through. It was probably the beer.

Excellent dinner! We had fried chicken and beef goulash--both were great choices! Service and view were equally perfect!

A delicious spot for Austrian food close to many of the tourist spots! You may need to make a reservation because when we went, they only had side tables left for guests unless you had reserved a table ahead of time. The menu here is quite large and features a lot of traditional Austrian foods. I ordered the frothed beer soup, Wiener schnitzel, and kasespatzel - all of which were absolutely delicious. The frothed beer soup tasted a bit like a better and lighter cream of mushroom soup. The Wiener schnitzel is quite a large portion and came with parsley potatoes and cranberry sauce. The kasespatzel is like small gnocchi topped with cheese sauce and fried onions, so it's a bit heavy but still worth a try.

I would still order the schnitzel over the fried chicken but the potato salad was pretty damn good.

Yelpers so…read morerecommended this place that we tried to go our first night in town, and were advised that it might be a 30 minute wait -- but the staff *also* told the 7 parties ahead of us that it might be a 30 minute wait for them, too. So we went elsewhere. We went back the next night at an off-hour and while the food was fine, I would have been highly disappointed had we waited in line for 30 minutes, let alone 2 or more hours. This restaurant has a prime location and a strong online reputation. And perhaps our experience was impacted by the fact that we went at an off-hour. Still, there are much better options, with equal character, available across the city. Consider branching out -- and check my other Salzburg reviews for other alternatives.

We came in around 5pm for an early dinner before our train back to Munich and was able to grab a table for 4. We got incredibly lucky because the restaurant really filled up and by the time we left, there was a long line down the block. Of course we had to have their Original Wiener Schnitzel, which was so crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. We also had a Salzburger Nockerl, which is a classic Austrian soufflé dessert that is considered a culinary symbol of Salzburg. You do have to order this about 20 minutes in advance, so we ordered it when we made our entree orders. This was really good and honestly, more than enough for our group of 4. I also highly recommend their house beer, which was one of the best beers I had during our 10 day trip.

The schnitzel was almost perfect, the chicken was well cooked, and we had a great salad as well. The bottle of local wine was also excellent. Our server was fast and efficient if a little thin on interaction. He was also very busy, so that's likely a part of it. The interior is nice, although we only saw a bit of it. We ordered a couple of appetizers to share. One that stood out was their trio dip and I particularly liked the pork belly crackling dip that was served with sourdough bread. It definitely is not the most healthy as it was greasy, but super flavorful with great texture from the cracklings. Another one I enjoyed was their Regensburger Wurstsalat. The sausages were thinly sliced paired with a crispy, tangy vinaigrette which was refreshing especially in a hot summer day. The scallions and red onions added another level of flavor and texture. For main, I ordered their braised pork belly and was pleasantly surprised. Th meat was tender, skin was still crispy and the sauce was hearty yet not too salty. My kids tried their schnitzel and they enjoyed it. However, my husband ordered one of their beef dish and I was told it was dry and salty. I honestly would recommended to just stick with pork when in Germany/Austria and stay away from beef because ever beef dishes we've tried were not good. Overall, this is your typical Biergarten with plenty of outdoor seating and tv's available to watch any sports. Our servers were all very friendly and relatively quick Austrian standard. The only thing is some tv's streamed ahead of others so the people who's watching the slower tv were a little upset as they would've heard the reaction of others before they can see the actions.
